Why Willie Nelson Is Awesome

2/7/07, 5:17 pm EST

Willie Nelson Jessica Simpson Mariah Carey

Willie Nelson is awesome. This is a fact we were reminded of when we learned that the certified American icon would be collaborating with Mariah Carey on an as-of-yet undisclosed song/film combo. Being Mariah Carey is something she can’t help, but those who choose to work with her are just asking to be mocked. And yet…somehow we can imagine Nelson pulling this off. It must be his consummate irreverence, or the fact that he’s always stoned, but something about that guy just makes it seem like literally everything he does is cool.

Here’s our list of five reasons why Willie Nelson is a badass. What would you add?

To All The Girls... | 2/11/2007, 5:22 pm EST

Willie has had a career of dueting with diverse artist like Julio Inglesis to Bob Dylan. Even though, I think Mariah Carey deserves the scorn she receives. I don’t think she is losing any sleep from it. In fact, borrowing a line from “The Critic”, she is sleeping on a big pile of money everynight. My issue with Mariah is that she is a good singer who don’t put any heart and soul in the songs she sings. The fact that most of the songs she does are just plain horrible doesn’t help her likability either.

I don’t think the collaboration would be a low light in Willie’s career. I think the worst people he had collaborated with is the shameless jingoism-pandering Toby Keith and (Let’s face it!)completely talentless Jessica Simpson.

curefreak | 2/10/2007, 1:10 pm EST

It’s kinda sad that Mariah “fans” come on here and say out of date words like “hateraide” makes you look pathetic and sad.
willie nelson is godlike but he really needs to stop collaberating with anyone that comes near him i call it elton john fever- the only way an old fogey can get any media attention nowadays is to work with someone relatively younger, hipper, prettier.
its sad and pathetic dont lower youreself willie !

I AM THE EYE IN THE SKY!

Working with Mariah would be a dream for many and saying otherwise is nonsense. Making fun of Mariah Carey was cool like 6 years ago, get a life.

Moses Cotton | 2/8/2007, 1:03 pm EST

Firstly, I want to say: I love Mariah and I love Willie. Mariah is prettier. Willie oozes coolness.
Lastly, I want to add that I would love to be mocked for collaborating with Mariah. In fact, I would like to extend this opportunity to Mariah right now. Mariah, get in touch.

Most Sincerely,
M. Cotton

Calm down Mariah fans.. Them boys and girls working at Rolling Stones can’t afford NOT to mock Ms. Carey. They are just trying to fit in with the I’m-obsessed-with-being-cool crowd. Obviously, things would be different if Mariah was an anorexic, chain-smoking girl with a drug problem and an awful voice..

Scott | 2/8/2007, 10:36 am EST

Wow, good job slagging the most influential artist of the past 15 years. I’ve never seen Rolling Stone be more out of touch.

A piece of an interview given to Star Telegram by the Great Icon Willie Nelson.

Meanwhile, he said he’s working with pop star Mariah Carey on a song and a film. “These things come up,” he said, laughing, “and I just say, ‘What a hell of a deal’.”

Man this reporter is guzzling down the “Haterade.” How in the hell is working with Mariah asking to get mocked? Is working with the most successful female artist of all time, one of the most acclaimed voices, an artist who takes the time to write almost all her material from lyric to melody, a survivor in the music industry with over 17 years of experience, really all that bad? Ask Boys2Men, Jeramaine Dupri, Brian McKnight, Whitney Houston, Puff Daddy, Prince, Usher, Nelly, Pharrel Williams, ODB, Wu Tang Klan, Busta Rhymes, Carol King and all the many other artists who have collaborated with her and they will tell this idiot of a reporter how sadly wrong he or she is. I will never understand why people are so hateful towards this woman.

Willie for Pres. | 2/8/2007, 8:51 am EST

Willie has been kickin ass for 40 years. Whiskey river take me home……….

Will | 2/8/2007, 7:57 am EST

“Considers 1.5 pounds of marijuana and 0.2 pounds of shrooms adequate supply for the day. ”

… I really can’t top that reason, even if I wanted to.

Quack | 2/8/2007, 3:27 am EST

I’m looking forward to that collaboration. BTW, does anybody else smell envy?

slave4supernewty | 2/8/2007, 2:36 am EST

And surprisingly, Mariah has worked with alot of artist in different fields of music: Carol King, ODB, C&C Music Factory, Babyface, Jermaine Dupri, Boyz II Men, Diane Warren, Russell Freeman (Jazz artist), Kanye West, Rick James, Bone Thugs, Puff Daddy, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, David Morales. Pop, dance, jazz, dance, hip hop, soul, R&B/funk, country had to be next…

Bryant | 2/8/2007, 2:31 am EST

Mariah is one of the most important divas of the past 20 yrs., she has sold more records and had more hits than Willie himself. If they write the right song together, I don’t see how it couldn’t work, not to mention with the acception of “Glitter” more has received accolades from her peers for not being a manufactured puppet diva (er..Whitney, Celine, Britney).

slave4supernewty | 2/8/2007, 2:30 am EST

I also can’t wait for this, I’m glad Mariah is going out of her R&B/hip hop comfort zone she’s been in for the past decade and really experimenting (aside from Glitter). Come on, Willie worked with Jessica Simpson and at least Mariah is a true talent in every sense of the word. It’s not like she’s some fake artist who just goes in the studio and sings what is given to her. She sings, writes, arranges, and produces. Willie is a great musician. This could be ok…

Neo | 2/8/2007, 2:11 am EST

what’s up with the hate. Mariah is the most successful female singer/song writer/producer of our time. How is working with Willie going to be a mockery? Look at all her previous collaborations, one of them is the most successful #1 single on the billboard chart. Lets not forget she made the biggest come back in music history when people like you wrote her off and went on to release 2005 biggest selling CD.

andy | 2/8/2007, 12:10 am EST

wow nice relevant article
u jus had to discredit mariah any chance u have right?
this is ridiculious!
how the hell in the world is mariah carey a mockery!?!?!
she shld be respected for all her amazing talents and achievements!

Jake | 2/7/2007, 11:08 pm EST

Is this article for real? I feel like collaboarating with the biggest female singer in the history of music will bring Willie more praise than it will mockery. Mariah is an icon–she’s changed the face of music as we see it today. In the words of Jadakiss, “You know you’ve made it as a rapper when Mariah Carey asks to work with you…that has been the ultimate honor for me as a musician.”

Willie doesn’t know how lucky he is to be working with such a versatile and successful musician.

Mike | 2/7/2007, 11:04 pm EST

It’s nice to see that people don’t fall so easily for the hate-mongering this reporter is attempting to fuel…shame on you man!…or woman! Like what have you contributed to the music industry to give you such a distinct privelege of disrepecting Miss Mariah Carey?! I mean, please….diva yes, mockery? Hell no. And just think about it for one second….the LIST of performers (as so cleverly outlined by Cal) that she has collaborated with. Dude, you can shove this article you know where. Get your hate on with someone else loser.

lik roper | 2/7/2007, 10:53 pm EST

Angela | 2/7/2007, 10:35 pm EST

Mariah DOESN’T need to work with Willie Nelson really, and that song with Jessica… ugh… whoever wrote this topic is surely a hater.

missmeanie | 2/7/2007, 9:04 pm EST

a quote from willie nelson “when these things come around, i just say what a helluva deal”.

no shit. willie is great and should be honored to be working with the biggest-selling female artist of all time.

BDB | 2/7/2007, 8:35 pm EST

Its a bit surprising to think of two such extremely different artists working together, but I’d say its intriguing at worst and potentially phenomenal at best. I, for one, am really looking forward to what these two icons can do together.
Good for Willie Nelson for not being “too big” to work with another superstar - even a dramatically different one.
Can’t wait….

Winston | 2/7/2007, 8:17 pm EST

Willie is the man. Mariah on the other hand….eh.

cal | 2/7/2007, 8:06 pm EST

Its funny that the reporter begins to discuss how great wilie is then try to bash the talent of my girl Mariah….

Since when did people who have collaborated with her become cause for joke..

there was

her and whitney with the prince of egypt which the song won an oscar

one sweet day with boyz to men which became the longest running single to date on the Billboard Hot 100..

there is her and jermaine dupri, bryan micheal cox, snoop, jay-z,baby face, carol king, ODB( with which i remind became the catalyst with propeled the merge of pop and hiphop to this day.. and the list goes on

Now tell me when one of these collaborations was mocked.. Ill tell u NONE!!!

If anything they were praised and highly regarded.. So, please lets stop trying to hate the music that mariah makes because to have a 17 year career and still going strong, and to be the sixth richest woman in entertainment by Forbes magazine…Mariah is laughing all the way to the bank..and no one is mocking that!!

brendan | 2/7/2007, 8:01 pm EST

he should be honoured. great artist working with another great artist.

aramisx | 2/7/2007, 7:02 pm EST

Littleg - you said it. What’s with all the Mariah hate? I would hardly consider her the epitome of musical mockery with all her success - the very thing that prompts people to work with her. Some people can just be stupid morons, like this jacka$$ of a “reporter”.

littleg | 2/7/2007, 6:50 pm EST

Everything Willie Nelson does is cool and revelant. Also, those that chose to work with Mariah Carey are not mocked. She has been in the business for 17 plus years, has 17 number 1 singles, sold over 100 million albums and counting, plus had the biggest radio hit ever in 2005. I’m sure those who chose to work with Mariah Carey, or those who have worked with her in the past, enjoyed the financial rewards.

DrJ | 2/7/2007, 6:17 pm EST

You really can’t beat smoking a joint on the White House roof (with an unnamed presidential aide during the Carter administration–as described by Willie in his autobiography).

white | 2/7/2007, 5:56 pm EST

he is good people. lets not forget that he was in the greatest country super group EVER, “The Highwaymen”

jill hives | 2/7/2007, 5:44 pm EST

helping to start farm aid was pretty cool, and also that he paid the irs back all that money he owed them by selling his albums on tv. he’s good people.

lik roper | 2/7/2007, 5:29 pm EST

willie nelson is playing at the catalyst in santa cruz soon -

Nice to know that Willie becomes relevant only when discussed with Mariah or Jessica. Sad, folks, pitiful really.
