Ozzfest Becomes Freefest? For Real?

2/6/07, 6:04 pm EST

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne

Say what? According to a press release put out by Team Ozzfest, this year the legendary summer tour will be free to fans. “2007 will forever mark the year Ozzfest spiked the concert industry’s punch and gave every head-banging American kid a reason to strap on an air guitar with the historic announcement that tickets to the summer’s premiere touring concert festival won’t cost fans a dime.” We are so air guitaring RIGHT NOW.

Seriously, the plan seems to be that via a combination of extreme sponsorship and very generous bands, Ozzy and Sharon have found a way to fight against the ever-inflating cost of tickets. So which big-hearted acts are willing to play to throngs of sweaty non-paying kids? “We have bands committed,” Sharon Osbourne said, “but we’re hoping that after today’s announcement we’ll have a whole influx of artists who want to be a part of something this ground breaking.” Sharon explained that artists would be able to sell their merch, book other bill-paying dates while playing Ozzfest and would not have to sign on for the full run. Still, the whole securing ticket problem sounds ominous: “To gain entry into the event, fans will go to www.ozzfest.com or www.livenation.com to find links that will direct them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured,” the release reads. “More details regarding the process are forthcoming.”

What do you think about this? Is there fine print to be read or have Sharon and Ozzy done the impossible?

Is it going to be one of those things where you have to complete 10 offers than pick one of two premium offers??? I stil haven’t received my laptop or IPOD : (

Halv | 2/6/2007, 6:18 pm EST

Knowing Sharon I’m sure the fans or the other artists (Ozzy excluded of course)will get screwed somehow.

Great... | 2/6/2007, 6:23 pm EST

Well this is great. First, artists can’t make money selling cd’s, and now you wont be able to make any money playing live. Thanks rich fucking assholes! Go back to your heroin den and let the indie band earn some fucking money….

RustySyringes | 2/6/2007, 6:36 pm EST

I’d rather fill a fire extinguisher with habanero sauce and blast it up my ass than go to Ozzfest, even a free one.

Den | 2/6/2007, 6:43 pm EST

Viva la revolucion!

ice water | 2/6/2007, 6:52 pm EST

I think its an amazing idea…I haven’t been to a concert for a major band in 5+ years because nobody deserves that much of my money (except Radiohead…I broke down for Radiohead…).

Only problem being that I would totally go to a free concert like this one…even tho I probably won’t like but one band they announce. Metal kids, get ready for fogies with guts hanging out and sunblocked noses.

ralphie | 2/6/2007, 6:55 pm EST

FREE = GOOD

I hate Geoff Lutz... | 2/6/2007, 6:59 pm EST

I hate Geoff Lutz, and That’s all I have to say about that!

I agree | 2/6/2007, 7:01 pm EST

I completely agree man, Geoff Lutz sucks hardcore.

Geoff Lutz is a Sucker! | 2/6/2007, 7:02 pm EST

But obviously, Sonic is the Fastest thing alive!

Jim | 2/6/2007, 7:12 pm EST

It’s a great idea!! Now if they can just do something about the $20 parking, $10 beer, and $5 water.

justathought | 2/6/2007, 7:14 pm EST

i think probably the main “catch” will be that the bands will be a notch down from years past. It kind of makes sense right, I mean what mid to low level band isn’t going to jump at the chance to play Ozzfest with or without a paycheck behind it.

Anonymous | 2/6/2007, 7:21 pm EST

It’s like a Heavy Metal Happy Hour!!!

\m/

Josh | 2/6/2007, 7:25 pm EST

Free isn’t good enough. If they pay me $100/hour to go to Ozzfest, I might consider it.

Gavin Newsom | 2/6/2007, 7:26 pm EST

RustySyringes | 2/6/2007, 6:36 pm EST

I’d rather fill a fire extinguisher with habanero sauce and blast it up my ass than go to Ozzfest, even a free one.

Let me know if you need any assistance….

Bob | 2/6/2007, 7:51 pm EST

lame. they haven’t paid most of their bands since the beginning of ozzfest. Sharon gets paid out from a percentage of the bands merch sales. Always did.

sponsorship | 2/6/2007, 7:58 pm EST

you probably have to get drink pepsi painted onto each one of your eyelids before you are allowed inside. as for the bands? well in between each song they have to talk about how great it is to use gold-bond medicated powder on their ass

Mike | 2/6/2007, 8:03 pm EST

or they will hire the Hells Angels as security…

rooferman | 2/6/2007, 8:14 pm EST

I can’t have bubbles Sharon, I’m the f—— prince of darkness.
We might see bubbles

mr. levi | 2/6/2007, 8:41 pm EST

as long as they can book that nugent band from supergroup and hand out free earplugs

JR | 2/6/2007, 8:45 pm EST

Sharon is a crazy shrewed buisness tycoon using Ozzy as her product. Its pretty cool if you think about it.

Winston | 2/6/2007, 8:49 pm EST

See ya at Ozzfest

Metal | 2/6/2007, 9:19 pm EST

hmmm…. this is fuckin awsome news but im suspicious… theyll probily get you on the parking, food, drinks, ect. and theyll have mostly crappy bands, but hey, ill still go just to see ozzy. but still… mabye everyone will have to have advertisement logos on their stomach like that crazy woman on the news

Coxy | 2/6/2007, 9:21 pm EST

Must wear ..ozz t-shirt to get in the gate. RRP $65

With sponsors logos plaster all over it.

Muhhahah just like a Will Smith movie.

yeastaaaaaaan | 2/6/2007, 9:29 pm EST

great… a free concert with bands like Hinder and Sevendust. sounds like something I wouldn’t waste gas money on

CrazyTrain | 2/6/2007, 9:44 pm EST

Ozzy freakin RULES!!

Sharon as got the biggest balls of anyone in metal ,dudes included.

Free music = GOOD

Lisa | 2/6/2007, 9:45 pm EST

Well there’s no such thing as a free lunch, and if its too good to be true it usually is. So I think there is some major BS going on behind the scenes that we don’t know about…yet.

SOLAT | 2/6/2007, 10:21 pm EST

Sounds to me like somebody missed the snack time!

Anonymous | 2/6/2007, 10:29 pm EST

Sounds like a plan for disaster if you ask me. I dig Ozzy, but I’ll be staying far, far away from a show like that.

Skullfreak | 2/6/2007, 10:32 pm EST

Who cares? Who would go see Ozzy anyway? Most overrated singer/stage whore/’artist’ ever. They should pull a Saddam on him, and hang him at one of the concerts. Now THAT I would pay a grand to see…’til his neck be broke’

IommiTony | 2/6/2007, 10:34 pm EST

Skull, if I ever meet you, you’re a fu$king dead man.

Skullfreak | 2/6/2007, 10:36 pm EST

You two should get on your knees and take turns servicing me

Skullfreak | 2/6/2007, 10:57 pm EST

I’m so gay, and I’m proud of it. That’s why I actually love Ozzy, the problem is that he turned me down when I tried to lick between his legs. He’s so beautiful

jaco | 2/6/2007, 11:07 pm EST

Who will attend a free metal concert…all the losers who have nothing better to do than go a big free event and cause trouble.
I guarantee it.
I’m staying far away…

Hunter | 2/6/2007, 11:33 pm EST

They need to have Guns N’ Roses this year. I would go for that.

KoldSpot | 2/6/2007, 11:38 pm EST

No way ozzfest will be free. Ozzfest sucks now anyway, so I could care less. 10 bucks for flat beer, yeah right.

Ric | 2/6/2007, 11:47 pm EST

OzzFest 2007 * (sponsered by Bank of America) Bitchin Man!!!

The Stranger | 2/7/2007, 1:04 am EST

ten faceless metal bands you’ve never heard of…

even more ridiculous prices for food and water than last time…

thousands of people who got in free and don’t feel much responsibility to metal or the experience of their fellow concert goer…

pathetic and embaressing sponsorship further pissing on the legacy of a performer who revolutionized rock n’roll in black sabbath but has since lost all credibility.

Dave | 2/7/2007, 1:27 am EST

This is fantastic news. I always love going to shows where people go because it’s free. Makes for a great music experience 90% of the time. And the corporate sponsorship angle? More brilliance. Kind of like watching “free” videos on MTV, AOL, Clear Channel, etc. Maybe they’ll find a way to have commercials between each song and the bands will have to have corporate logos on their outfits and equipment. But hey, it’s “free” so that’s great, right?

Someone | 2/7/2007, 4:09 am EST

What they’re going to do is the same as the “Get a free Ipod” Or “radio xbox 360″ routines People have to jump through several sponsored hoops – including signing up for services and purchasing goods online – to get the tickets. and here’s the kicker – no one under 18 is allowed to participate in these sorts of promotions.

smirky | 2/7/2007, 6:00 am EST

better than ozzfest

Scott | 2/7/2007, 6:14 am EST

I’m wearing a sweater!

jungleland | 2/7/2007, 8:05 am EST

my guess is that there will be a commercial featuring Ozzy for some product and there will be tons of booths at the event (and banners) they won’t turn this into an informercial..and they will get tons of press and back-to-back sellout shows…and I will FINALLY get to see Ozzy and check him off the list(Prince, Radiohead, Neil Young, Brian Wilson and then I will have seen all of my heroes…took 25 years to do it)

Dong Lee | 2/7/2007, 9:09 am EST

oooh. i think i smelling something. oh yeah, it must be britney coochie. she has funky smell on her muff i think. yeah, she skank.

rockstar70 | 2/7/2007, 9:36 am EST

This means that all the fans money will go to band merch. which helps bands directly. Only Sharon Osbourne has the balls and the brains to pull this off!!!
OZZFEST 2007.

voodoo | 2/7/2007, 9:37 am EST

How the hell do we get tickets, dont just talk about it DO IT !!!!!

Boner | 2/7/2007, 10:28 am EST

Ryan T. | 2/7/2007, 11:11 am EST

Please let us have SABBATH.

Space Race | 2/7/2007, 11:36 am EST

Nice idea to get the dudes at Playstation, Trojan and Jaeger to pay even more $$ Sell more merch. and CD’s at the FYE tent and all is well.
But will all the sponosrs BITE? no. but most of the bands do! the only one worth a DAMN in 2006 was BLACK LABEL SOCIETY. Ozzy has lost his Fastball. PRINT IT

BrokeNeck Nathan | 2/7/2007, 12:30 pm EST

Why not go? As long as I dont have to fill out a bunch of bullshit online surveys then I am there, man.

And I Sevendust at OzzFest with TOOL and they were amazing(sure that was about 7-8 years ago, but still)…man, I am getting old.

vemrion | 2/7/2007, 12:46 pm EST

They pissed off too many Maiden fans two years ago with the egging incident and now they’re scrambling for ways to stay afloat.

You know, many of the second-stage bands have had to Pay to Play for years now anyway. They’re making money demanding that struggling bands pay for the privilege of playing versus the other way around. This whole thing smells like a marketing pit on the order of MySpace. ugh

Tyler | 2/7/2007, 1:30 pm EST

Damn, I can’t wait to get tickets

Ghost of Kurt | 2/7/2007, 2:54 pm EST

You’re all a bunch of freakin’ slaves…..

jay croghan | 2/7/2007, 4:18 pm EST

Osbournes full of shit? | 2/7/2007, 9:06 pm EST

I don’t know, I’m skeptical. Let’s see what they say after they sober up and realize they have to organize this thing. Remember “No More Tours”?

justanotherthought | 2/7/2007, 9:08 pm EST

Here’s something else to think about . . . it’s free, but you HAVE TO HAVE TICKETS. Good luck getting them.

I applaud the idea though.

Danny | 2/7/2007, 9:18 pm EST

Hey Shinerbockman, do the world a favor and put a gun in your mouth. That is all.

EX-FAN | 6/21/2007, 8:44 pm EST

Free my a$$! Last I checked you had to bid online to even get a fu@#%ng ticket! I would rather buy a ticke than put up with fake fans. PS: People who go to free concerts usually don’t have a whole lot of money, and probably won’t buy a whole lot of merchandise dipshits!
