Rage Against the Retraction

2/5/07, 11:02 am EST

Rage Against the MachineLast Thursday night MTV News posted an exclusive interview with Tom Morello about the Rage Against the Machine reunion, but hours later it disappeared like Zack De Le Rocha. Is Chris Cornell pissed that he’s blamed for Audioslave’s hiatus? Is the Bush administration putting the kibosh on the whole thing, fearing Rage will turn a new generation of kids into socialists? More likely, MTV accidentally violated some agreement with Rage about when the piece could run. Regardless, Rage is the last band you’d think would promote censorship. In the spirit of open access, here’s the full article as copied to an Audioslave message board.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
I want both bands (Audioslave and RATM) to coexist.

yeastaaaaaaan | 2/5/2007, 12:27 pm EST

Audioslave is the most bland, boring, run-of-the-mill band i’ve ever heard…. I hope they break up, RATM gets back together, and it then convinced At the Drive-in to get back together.

Hunter | 2/5/2007, 12:31 pm EST

I also hope Audioslave break up & RATM get back together – Frankly, Audioslave sucks.

Lisa | 2/5/2007, 12:41 pm EST

RATM is awesome. I hope they do more than just one show. It’d be great to have em back again.

Oddjob | 2/5/2007, 12:45 pm EST

Morello is the biggest idiot even, I’m sure the article was pulled because ZDLR felt it made the band look like clowns. Tom Morello may be the most deluded character in rock history. Does he really think our country is in “right-wing purgatory” because Rage Against the Machine broke up? Does he really think they can “knock out” Bush with one reunion show? Does he really think the “time is right” now, and not two years ago? Does he mean all this, or is he saying it to justify the reunion in order to jibe with the current RATM brand name? Or is he simply being sarcastic?

kenton5150 | 2/5/2007, 1:08 pm EST

I’m as glad as anyone to see these guys back together, but c’mon, “knock out the Bush administration”? This is the most lame duck administration in recent memory. RATM should’ve stepped up in 2003 when this whole mess in Iraq started… or in 2001 after 9/11. It’s a little late to jump on the antiwar bandwagon, and still get credit for any change that might occur.

Redrum | 2/5/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Hahahaha At the Drive-in back together, please. The Mars Volta is much more mature and quality band… c’mon

Oh boy. Rage. ZZZZZZzzzzzz. Gotta give them some respect, but at some point it has to come down to the relevance of the music.

Rage is back to save this shit you people call rock music. This is a band with a purpose. Not like your bubble gum bands like Fallout Boy, My chemical Romance, or Panic at the Disco.

RushFan | 2/5/2007, 2:04 pm EST

Will someone please tell me what is so bad about Audioslave?

Oddjob | 2/5/2007, 2:05 pm EST

Answer: they’re not as good as Rush

RushFan | 2/5/2007, 2:09 pm EST

No, they are not as good as Rush…are you being a smart-ass?

Everybody SHADDUP! | 2/5/2007, 2:26 pm EST

awesome! I am SO glad they’re back!

wank | 2/5/2007, 2:36 pm EST

Most overrated guitarist ever. Completely lifeless, uninspired, boring guitar solos.

Oddjob | 2/5/2007, 2:38 pm EST

Being serious. i love Rush!

KC | 2/5/2007, 3:28 pm EST

First, I think Rage provided the entry point for bands to feel comfortable making a serious stand. I don’t think bands would be quite as willing to take on the administration without a band like Rage, who was on the frontlines from day one. Whether they can topple them, that’s a pretty bold statement. But I am sure they can breate more life into a group of younger people that can be pretty darn apathetic at times.
Musically, Audioslave plays some very solid music, and is a top notch band for the past few years. Let’s face it, more bands than not these days are underwhelming. Audioslave made enjoyable music.
However, Rage is an iconic group. They set trends, they challenged the powers that be and made music that is just as listenable today as it was 12 years ago.
As a fan I would be eager to see Rage back together and taking on new challenges. De La Rocha is amazing vocally and I think not producing music is a gigantic waste of talent.
And Morello continues to push innovations with his guitar and continues to sound unlike any guitarist before him. Is there any other musician in the past 15 years you can say that about?
Even with all of this, one must prepare for the worst. That egos wont let them actually get back together for a show, and especially not to record and tour. I’d certainly be ready to snatch up new music if they did, but these things always have a hard time coming together.

Bottom line: you KNOW Rage is getting paid an A$$LOAD of money to play this show. If you were Tom Morello, your job at this point would be to promote your product. He’s not delusional or anything, he graduated from Harvard, he’s a smart cat. He just has a job to do now.

Every band says “We’re about to do our most important work!” right before a big show or album release… it’s marketing. Even artists have to be businessmen.

“F*** YOU I WON’T DO WHATCHA TELL ME! F*** YOU I WON’T DO… ooh, $2,000,000??? Yes sir.”

Dude | 2/5/2007, 4:15 pm EST

Tom Morello has absolutely no grip on reality. Or he thinks we’re all just saps. Either way, that interview made me just lose a ton of respect for him. Unless it was fake, which may be why mtv.com took it down.

Jon B. | 2/5/2007, 4:27 pm EST

And who even cares if Tom is for the money? Zach is saying great things. I wish I could be there, because that band means A-LOT to me.

wank | 2/5/2007, 4:36 pm EST

KC, if you expand your horizons a bit, you’ll find that T.M. has done nothing innovative. It’s all been done before and much better.

Eric | 2/5/2007, 5:16 pm EST

dude its sarcasm. Yes, hes marketing them. I love Rage and the fact that they stand up for their beliefs, but they obviously cannot topple the white house with one show. Its obviously a joke. Like saying fucking New York has crime problems because Batman has been gone.

Lets just say that its cool that a great band that is much better than its spin-off is back and hopefully back to stay for a bit.

Canadian Boy | 2/5/2007, 5:47 pm EST

Money + Ego + Rage Against The Machine = delusions of grandeur

Stupid Is As Stupid Says | 2/5/2007, 6:01 pm EST

I guess noone knows the meaning of the term “Tongue In Cheek Remark” Tom Morello takes MTV about as serious as watching someone get kicked in the nuts

BA | 2/5/2007, 8:22 pm EST

This has happened before with this band. About 6 months before Battle of LA came out Morello did an interview talking about the album and everything he said was completelly wrong and totally hilarious. Song titles he mentioned were “Proud Proud Proud to be apart of the Pepsi Generation” and things of that nature. THe magazine published it (i wont mention which music mag believe is obvious fake info) So people should probably calm down a bit. I know its been awhile but its typical Morello fashion.

A man called HeLL | 2/5/2007, 8:38 pm EST

I find it funny that no one has touched upon the biggest issue of all: Rage Against The Machine is, pure and simple, a shitty band. Even in it’s isotope form with Chris Cornell singing, there’s nothing worth crying about. The fact that you idiots have invested yourselves so heavily into Morello’s jive-assed trash talk is proof that all of you have way bigger issues than not getting to see one of the most over-rated bands in history reunite. Go buy a Mission of Burma record or something and shut the hell up.

mikeky | 2/6/2007, 11:26 am EST

zack sounds and looks like a squirrel. i’m sorry. i can’t support squirrels in music.

surforia | 2/6/2007, 11:31 am EST

if you’re a guy and you don’t like Rage, you should rip your dick off and throw it in the river b/c you’re a huge pussy.

Jacob | 2/6/2007, 3:03 pm EST

audioslaves first record fecking KILLED. I still love that album. Unfortunately, everything they have put out since is pretty horrible. The original Fire is a pretty cool 70’s style rock song, though…..I do like that one.

Clare O'Brien | 2/7/2007, 4:23 am EST

Audioslave are musically and artistically streets ahead of anything RATM managed to do. If they implode in favour of a money-making nostalgia-reunion-tour-and-DVD circus, it will be a crying shame. Chris Cornell’s forthcoming solo album looks far more interesting than this nostalgia trip.

Jules | 2/7/2007, 1:20 pm EST

Rage had it’s hay day. Always good music to have a good workout to, but that is all it ever did for me. Feels more like a “remember when we were in high school” type nastalgia party seeing them reunite. Kind of sad. Cornell will rise out of whatever happens. He was the shine on Audioslave anyway. He will stand the test of time and is a rock god as it is now. “heaven send hell away no one sings like (that) anymore!”

A man called HELL | 2/7/2007, 4:26 pm EST

“if you’re a guy and you don’t like Rage, you should rip your dick off and throw it in the river b/c you’re a huge pussy.”

Are you fucking kidding me?! Rage is the biggest bunch of pussies I’ve ever seen! Easily the WORST live show I’ve ever witnessed, and what’s more, it’s not like these guys earned their way into the spotlight. Their rich and spoiled trust fund brats, nothing more, nothing less. Morello is a fairly interesting player, but the luke warm drums and bass mixed with Zach DLR’s poorly written, nonsense lyrics makes for a shitty overall product. No, Surforia, I am almost certain that you are the pussy here. Bad taste not withstanding, you should go kill yourself before you finally give in to those urges and start molesting little boys.

Apathetic fan | 2/7/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Is it a coincidence that RATM reunite at the same time Tom Morello is ready to release a solo album? I think not. Timing is everything. Right time to promote an album, wrong time to deliver a knockout punch to Bush. That time was 3-4 years ago. Right time to take it to the bank instead of the streets?

tru | 2/8/2007, 2:05 am EST

Rage Against The Machine is such an awlful band in every way possible. They always preached justice and unity, but all they managed to achieve was bigotry, hatred and malice in their fans. Judging by the attitudes most “Rage” fans showed towards Audioslave (one of the greatest bands to emerge in the past decade) was shameful. And Zach makes me want to vomit!
