M.I.A.’s Out for Blood With New Track

2/5/07, 1:19 pm EST

Whew. Sri Lankan hip-hop princess M.I.A. has been gone for so long we began to worry. The glamorous, politically conscious, icon-in-training released her debut album, Arular, to clamorous acclaim in March of 2005 but since then, nothing. It’s been hard. We have suffered, wondering if we’d lost her for good to the grimy dance halls of Tamil Nadu or Trinidad and Tobago where she was rumored to be recording her new album. But today M.I.A. has put all our concerns to rest via her new track “Bird Flu.”

The song is available on M.I.A.’s Myspace page, as is the video, which was apparently filmed in a fishing village on India’s south coast. Like “Rhythm Nation” in the jungle, “Bird Flu” sounds confident and defiant, while the video’s amalgamation of village life and impromptu, totally original dance sequences perfectly suits this tense, tribal romp. When asked why she chose “Bird Flu” as the song’s title, M.I.A. has responded, “Because this beat gon kill everyone!” We’re feeling blissfully slain already.

::Flai ls arms wildly::

I love love love her. Her first album was amazing.

I like how I type the word frails on that last post, and it turns it into “Flai ls”.

Hm.

The Rolling Stone webmaster OBVIOUSLY has a script in place to f**k up everybody’s posts so the editors come off as well-read by comparison, not like illiterate, trash-music-worshipping, hippopotomonstrosesquippe dalio phobic, small-minded, shallow cockmongers.

Just kidding – trash-music-worshipping, hippopotomonstrosesquippedalio phobic, small-minded and shallow maybe, but I honestly don’t know about cockmongers. I just wanted to use that word. Haha. Cockmongers.

See that? See that? I typed “Hippopotomonstrosesquippedali ophobic” and it misspelled it! It put a space where there shouldn’t be! They’re dumbing us down.

… on many many levels.

MIA is the shit and blowing away just about everything else in hiphop (mostly production wise).

I don't know | 2/5/2007, 7:33 pm EST

I liked the first album, but it was all so 2005. I saw her live and she was kind of pathetic.

I met her at the after party and was struck by how insecure she was. Her “tough as nails” image is totally contrived. She’s just another soft-spoken, self-conscious desi girl who likes to pretend she can party when her family isn’t watching. She’ll be getting married soon, and you’ll never hear from her again.

The ever mundo sympatico wunderkinds at RollingStone.com are blissing out to Sri Lankan Ain’t-I-So-Pretty-But-Real M.I.A.’s new music vid, “Bird Flu”? That’s right, a song about the international dance club scene’s favorite disease, avian influenza. Vid has: plenty of dancing poor folk; tribal funk beat, guys wearing bandanas like they run with the peace loving Tamil Liberation Tigers; and, some birds in case you whip yourself into a dervish and forget the social relevance. Potential CDC anthem?
