Joe Hunter, Former Spinner Billy Henderson Both Dead, Rick Rubin’s New Gig? And More

  • It’s a dark time for soul stars. Grammy Award winning pianist Joe Hunter (of the Funk Brothers), who played with Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Martha and the Vandella, and Marvin Gaye, was found dead in his apartment in Detroit on Friday. He was 79. Billy Henderson, co-founding member of the Spinners has also died, due to complications from diabetes. He was 67.
  • As if Rick Rubin doesn’t have enough going on, producing Metallica, U2, and Linkin Park and pissing off Scott Weiland, now he’s reportedly been offered the job of co-chairman of Columbia Records. In order to take the gig, Warner Brothers has to let him out of his deal with them, but, according to the New York Times, it looks like that might happen.
  • The Arctic Monkeys have announced the title of their forthcoming second album. The record will be called Favorite Worst Nightmare, and will reportedly come out on April 23rd. Full track list after the jump.
  • If Justin Timberlake’s New Year’s resolution was to cement his position as the traveling guest performer of the year, he’s on his way. We know he’s on Timbaland’s upcoming album, and now Billboard is reporting that Timberlake will appear, along with Will.i.am – the master of guest stardom – on Macy Gray’s forthcoming new album.

Arctic Monkeys Favorite Worst Nightmare:

1. Brianstorm

2. Teddy Picker

3. D Is For Dangerous

4. Balaclava

5. Fluorescent Adolescent

6. Only Ones Who Know

7. Do Me A Favour

8. This House Is a Circus

9. If You Were There, Beware

10. The Bad Thing

11. Old Yellow Bricks

12. 505

you idiots have the wrong picture posted…that’s Ivory Joe Hunter, recorded for Atlantic, NOT Motown’s Joe Hunter of the Funk Brothers fame. Quit worrying so much about what Paris Hilton is doing and learn something about music…you’re disgusting to everyone.

Typical big label move w/ Rick Rubin — he’s got great ears for production so let’s make him an executive! Always trying to strategize by looking back. Sad. And expensive, no doubt.

P.S. – That Timberland Macy Gray story is months old. What’s interesting is that director James Cameron (Titanic, Terminator) is directing the new Timbaland single “Give It to Me” in 3-D…

DetroitMidget is my hero for knowing the difference between Joe Hunter and Ivory Joe Hunter…and Rolling Stone should be ashamed for not knowing the difference

You sound surprised by the ignorance. BTW, where’s our girl Lizzy? Is even she ashamed to put her name at the bottom of this feature of late? It’s OK, I’m sure they’ll have some “totally awesome” and credible writer they found in a model search–I mean “I’m With ROlling Stone”–handling this feature in the near future.
