What Is Prince Up To? Cool Covers Album We Plan to Hate, Beach Boys Drama

2/2/07, 3:09 pm EST

Prince

  • It’s Friday afternoon – we are all looking forward to the weekend, making plans to watch the Super Bowl (or rage against the fact that everyone else will be watching the Super Bowl). But what is Prince doing? How does Prince gear up for his halftime show performance? Is he meditating? Planning what to wear? Discussing lighting concepts with National Anthem singer Billy Joel? Who knows. To live in Prince-land must be a wonderful thing.
  • We plan to hate the forthcoming KCRW Sounds Eclectic: The Covers Project on principle alone (it’s being sold at Starbucks) but we have to admit the track listing sounds pretty cool. It includes special live versions of a bunch of cool covers, including, apparently, Paul Weller’s take on Rose Royce’s “Wishing on a Star,” The Flaming Lips’s version of Radiohead’s “Knives Out,” and R.E.M.’s cover of John Hartford’s “Gentle on My Mind.”
  • Robert Santangelo = our personal hero. This 16-year-old is currently being sued by five record companies who have accused him of online music piracy. Santangelo’s response? To file a countersuit accusing the recording industry of antitrust law violation, conspiracy to defraud the courts and extortion. Note: Santangelo has rebel blood — his mother is Patti Santangelo, the 42-year-old who was sued by the record companies in 2005, refused to settle out of court and eventually got the label’s to drop their suit.
  • This whole Beach Boys name dispute is getting crazy. Yesterday it inspired us to write Rolling Stone’s Rules for the Fair Use of Important Band Names, today we hear that the lawsuit brought by Mike Love against former bandmate Al Jardine will go to trial.
  • If this package of Madonna condoms isn’t a spoof then that means there’s a very old box of seemingly Madonna-endorsed condoms lying around. Thrilling news.
  • Dear God: Can we please stop speculating about which producers Britney is maybe, possible, potentially working with? The new rumor — that Brit has recruited Lukasz Gottwald to work on her new tunes — is the third this week! Britney is starting to seem like a producer slut.

Yeah, hating a compilation for a public radio station just because its sold through a multinational corporation makes sense. Just as much sense as getting paid by one multinational to diss on another, anyway…

RS – voice of the common people. That’s what I always say

I know one thing for sure.

It’s going to be cheesy.

jcjohnson63 | 2/2/2007, 4:26 pm EST

Chuck | 2/2/2007, 4:42 pm EST

Yeah, what’s with the “hate it cuz it’s Starbucks?” Are you afraid that saying “this Starbucks-comp looks good” defiles your cool? I’ve been to starbucks like 3 times in my life, but if some good tunes is gonna be sold there, I’d buy it.

Hal | 2/2/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Prince is fucking lame. I’ve never seen a more arrogant performer. He thinks he can play like Jimi Hendrix but he doesn’t have the depth or feeling to do so

jill hives | 2/2/2007, 5:06 pm EST

so do they now hate bob dylan on principle alone because he sold a cd solely through starbucks stores? and by such logic, is it safe to hate on any person or group on principle alone that appears on the cover of rs magazine? just curious. anyway, i do remember a time when prince was pretty cool, but…

There’s a very old box of Madonna’s laying around alright, and I ain’t talking about condoms.

All this talk about meaningless celebrities like Britney… especially when today marks the anniversary of one of the most interesting “celebrity” stories ever, one guaranteed to blow away anything the entire history of rock ever served up -

February 2, 2007 marks the 85th anniversary of the death of Hollywood director William Desmond Taylor, shot on 2/2/1922 in the Alvarado Court Apts. The Taylor case is absolutely insane with a cast of drug dealers, pervs, blackmailers, and miscreants ever. It also features a D.A. leading a manhunt for a suspect HE ALREADY KNOWS IS DEAD! Add groups of mystery soldiers and assorted freaks and you’ve got plot for a great movie…
Yet there has never, ever been either a movie or tv show made of it. The case is still open after 85 years.

Don | 2/2/2007, 7:29 pm EST

Well since Prince is not on drugs, I guess he really cannot play like Hendrix.

keir | 2/3/2007, 12:32 am EST

Yeah, cause that public radio, you know, is just for teh squares.

Bob Gknow | 2/3/2007, 9:04 am EST

Nice to know that the Super Bowl halftime show will, once again, trot out a stale, no longer relevant musical performer. Ho hum….

Max Buzz | 2/3/2007, 2:15 pm EST

Prince is the single most underrated guitar player in the history of rock and roll! He will rock the Super Bowl!

Wigga with no aptitude | 2/3/2007, 4:18 pm EST

Watch the Super-Bowl for the funny commercials and sometimes entertaining football game… everyone who loves music for what it is knows that real music isn’t the crap you hear on the radio, MTV, American Idol, the Super-Bowl or read about in Rolling Stone. If you want to be a slave to the corporate sound system go ahead, but your time is better spent perusing the independent music scene (not to be confused with “indie-music”, which is just the major labels’ crafty way of getting more of your money while subjecting you to sellouts who sell out for less $. Have a nice day

ken vail jr | 2/3/2007, 5:13 pm EST

prince is one of the most incredible musicians to walk the face of the earth….if anyone saw him do the song ‘FURY’ on SNL last year, you’ll see what an utterly brilliant guitarist he is.

Dave | 2/5/2007, 12:50 am EST

Prince was excellent for a SB half-time show — loved how he played Purple Rain…in the rain. Was thinking he was going to toast himself on some electrical cord…

And by the way this little guy is not gay! He was with a Latino babe. She was 6′0, he is 5′3, but if you are in bed together your the same size.
