Weekend Rock List: Best Ballad Ever

2/2/07, 5:34 pm EST

Meat Loaf

You know the ones. These are songs that make you mushy and invigorated all at once. You’ve slow danced to them, you’ve made out while they play on shitty car stereos in the rain (or at least it seems like you have,) you think about all your exes every time you hear them. Here are our picks for the best ballad ever. What would you choose?

  • “Stairway to Heaven” – Led Zeppelin
  • “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)” – Meat Loaf
  • “Patience” – Guns N’ Roses
  • “Wild Horses” – Rolling Stones
  • “Nothing Compares To You” – Sinead O’ Connor

tommy saeng | 2/2/2007, 8:09 pm EST

for me, “wild horses” is, and always will be, the greatest ballad every written/performed. only song I’ve ever heard that moved me, literally, to tears.

but if I had to pick some that weren’t mentioned by rolling stone employees, I’d got with “shelter from the storm,” bob dylan, and “no expectations,” the rolling stones, and “dream on” by aerosmith, and “hasten down the wind,” warren zevon, and “my my, hey hey,” neil young.

jayrod | 2/2/2007, 11:52 pm EST

What about “Oh Sweet Nuthin’” by The Velvet Underground. It is great and it doesn’t need correct spelling to prove it.

Two Words: Bonnie Tyler

“Total Eclipse of the Heart”

Enough said…

Erik E Erik | 2/3/2007, 12:43 am EST

There’s a debate about this? I just thought it was commonly accepted that the best ballad was “I Love You” by Vanilla Ice: “You’re so fine/let’s wine and dine/I’m so happy/that you are mine.” Is there really a debate?

Some of you, particulary the RS people, need to think outside the box a little more. Many these choices are pathetic, really, when looking at the overall history of the ballad in popular American music. Think of all the great soul and early country ballads that have been completley neglected here.
Kudos to whoever said No Expectations, though.

Here’s a few that rattle off my head.

“Trouble”-The Jayhawks
“Descending”-The Black Crowes
“She”-Gram Parsons
“It Makes No Difference”-The Band (my choice for the greatest ballad of all time. if this song don’t make you weep, something’s gravely wrong)
“Razor Love”-Neil Young
“When the Knot Comes Loose”-My Morning Jacket
“Come Away With Me”-Norah Jones
“Willin”-Little Feat
“Behind that Locked Door”-George Harrison
“Moonlight”-Bob Dylan
“I Threw it All Away”-Dylan
“Send it On”-D’Angelo
“My Heart is Broken”-Ryan Adams
“Corrina, Corrina”-Traditional
“Lovin In My Baby’s Eyes”-Taj Mahal
“Wishful Thinking”-Wilco
“Rose in My Heart”-Johnny Cash
“Falling off the Face of the Earth”-Neil Young
“Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”-Willie Nelson
any ballad by Otis Redding (RIP)

Daughter – PJ

slim harpo | 2/3/2007, 8:18 pm EST

Dark End of the Street is another excellent choice–particulary the Flying Buritto Brother’s version.

I love Dylan’s Sara, too. Can you imagine what his wife was thinking when she first heard that?

But all these GNR and Zeppelin choices are a bit much.

personally, I think Zeppelin’s two best ballads are “Tangerine” and “That’s the Way” from “III.”

Meatloaf? Are you kidding me Rolling Stone. i don’t know why I bother checking out this site anymore if that’s the best you can offer up.

PJ Sparks | 2/4/2007, 10:39 am EST

A lot of cats are writing in U2’s “With or Without You”, but man, from my nights at bars/high school dances, and the whole last dance thing, gimme “All I Want is You” over “WOWY” everytime.
And I am biased, but “Yellow Ledbetter” by Pearl Jam.

Glycerine-Bush
Kiss from a Rose-Seal
With Arms Wide Open-Creed
Don’t Speak-No Doubt

I feel these songs are solid examples of what a ballad is supposed to be.I know these are all songs from the ninties, but what can I say? -that’s what I grew up on. Remember, the def. of a ballad is a soaring love song of some kind. The majority of these songs, many are great classics but they are not ballads. Too many examples to name.”Everlong” by Foofighters is not a ballad.”Hey you” by Pinkfloyd is not a ballad.”The End” by the Doors is not a ballad. Great songs but not ballads.”Champagne Supernova” by Oasis is far from a ballad. I could go on all day. I love all these songs, but they just are not ballads.

alright, all the bon jovi-bryan adams-guns’n roses leather midlife crisis pants bands chill out for a second…

the ballad we are all looking for is definitely not to find in this kind of “taste”.

it could be from neil, pink floyd, beatles, stones, zeppelin, dylan, springsteen, queen, clapton etc.

see what i am saying?
