Tom Morello Speaks Out Re: Rage Reunion, Gary Glitter To Leave Vietnamese Prison? And More

2/2/07, 9:15 am EST

rage

  • Tom Morello has revealed the thinking behind the forthcoming Rage Against the Machine Reunion: The notoriously political band wants to get President Bush. “It occurred to all of us that the times were right to see if we can knock the Bush administration out in one fell swoop,” Morello reportedly said. “This is an administration that believes it’s beyond the laws of the land… One thing this president isn’t above is the laws of physics, and there is no action without reaction. And we’re part of that reaction.” One more reason for Bush to be shaking in his cowboy boots.
  • Former glam rock star Gary Glitter might get out! The rocker has been imprisoned in Vietnam since March, charged with child molestation after he was accused of fooling around with underage girls. Glitter’s lawyer says he expects his client to receive amnesty from the government and be set free.
  • Whitney Houston can’t get divorced from estranged husband Bobby Brown fast enough. The singer, who has been cleaning herself up and auctioning off her undergarments in quest of a new her, is asking the court to speed up her divorce proceedings.
  • We tried to help Diddy out with this problem once before. The rapper, who is not allowed to use the name Diddy in the UK since it has already been claimed by a dance DJ called Dearlove, is apparently still trying to be Diddy overseas. Puffy/Diddy/P Diddy aka Sean Combs is again being accused of not complying with orders to remove the name Diddy from his various UK-oriented Web sites.
  • Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler is the last individual on earth you’d ever foresee getting involved in a fight. But if Pete Wentz can go after security guards, so can Win, who is a big dude. Video of the incident, in which Butler attempts to set up an impromptu post-show sing-along in the foyer of the London venue in which the band had just played, appears here. Security got rough, but Butler persevered. [via NME]

At exactly what point did the security “get a little rough” in that Arcade Fire video?

Oddjob | 2/2/2007, 9:57 am EST

Tom Morello is an idiot. The time is right NOW, because you need to “get Bush”? For chrissake the guy has 2 years left in office and is facing a Democratic Congress. The time to “get” him and show there is a “reaction” would have been 2 years ago. They should have joined the Vote for Change tour or something. He should just tell the truth and quit acting like their band makes a difference in the world of politics: the reason for the reuinion is that the price was right.

Also, he ruins every Audioslave song with a totally inappropriate over-the-top solo that has nothing to do with the song. It osunds like he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

YER mom | 2/2/2007, 10:02 am EST

Good Job Tom Morello, way to wait until NOW when he is leaving office anyway in less than 2 years…

Ciara | 2/2/2007, 10:04 am EST

To reply to Oddjob’s comment, Audioslave isn’t that good!! C’mon, are you seriously going to side with Audioslave over Rage? Kudos to Rage for going after the Man!

Rage Against the Morello | 2/2/2007, 10:07 am EST

Morello…..Play yer gee-tar and shut up! Oddjob nailed it! Go make a Steve Vai album……….LAME!

Timo | 2/2/2007, 10:09 am EST

Thank you Oddjob.

Morhello | 2/2/2007, 10:15 am EST

Morello = blowhard!
Oh yea, your selfmasterbatory guitar playing is getting old. You have recycled that first Rage album for 14 years.

Josh W. | 2/2/2007, 10:34 am EST

If Tom Morello wants to change the world so bad why doesnt he stop complaining and do something about it??… Here’s an idea Tom why dont you stop playing music and become a politician???

That is apparently what he would like to do most anyways. Especially since everytime he opens his mouth, it seems, he chooses not to talk about what he does for a living (music) and decides to talk about his poliics. Besides maybe if he was a politician then he could get the people of this country to listen to more bullshit like we have to listen to everyday no matter who is president.

In my opinion its not the goverments problem the country is in the state its in. Its the peoples fault, especially the extreme right or left wing minded people. This is a democracy you know Tom and if there were really that many people who hated the government, president Bush or no president Bush, than we could and would change it by any means necessary. But unfortunately for you theres not. So please keep playing music (what your good at) and stop spouting off more political bullshit (what your not good at).

Mullet Man | 2/2/2007, 10:42 am EST

I agree with the Rage comments. Maybe they were waiting for Dems to get in because Bush and the Rep congress would’ve had them killed if they popped up, hence the mediocre crap they made with Cornell. So did the Dems promise protection if an right wing hit man was sent by Bush and co? Karl Rove is gone too…

Barry | 2/2/2007, 11:10 am EST

Wow, that security was rough. Shoo.

baba o riley | 2/2/2007, 11:13 am EST

yeah, i was hoping to see that indie nerd ;) get his ass kicked a little.

cool performance though, i would love to have been there for that.

Eric | 2/2/2007, 11:16 am EST

It’s never to late to “get” Bush.

O sammy Bin Ladin | 2/2/2007, 11:18 am EST

Oddjob, I could’nt have said it any better myself. Nobody gives a shit!

SoulMonkey | 2/2/2007, 11:42 am EST

First of all I’ve heard Morello intervied a few times. He seems like a very intelligent guy, and he is a interesting guitar player. That said, the fact that Morello thinks Rage is going to knock a “President” down is a joke. Sending a hit man? Are you fucking crazy? Let Rage rage on. I love their music, but I think their politics are insane. That is what makes this country great. I for one wish that Rolling Stone had the conviction to show both sides. Of course they don’t becasue they are biased and don’t believe in a balanced view.

Venezuelan Born | 2/2/2007, 11:48 am EST

Tom Morello…remember when he used to matter?

WHATEVER........... | 2/2/2007, 11:49 am EST

The Arcade Fire licks pouch

mikeky | 2/2/2007, 1:09 pm EST

i love tom morello, but he needs to pull his head out of his ass. i agree with him politically, but why does he think his band is so powerful that they can take down a president? since when in history has that been done? isn’t that incredibly arrogant on his part? i mean, come on.

Distinction | 2/2/2007, 1:55 pm EST

Does anyone really see Rage Against the Machine’s reunion as more than just an opportunity be nostalgic?

Tom Morello’s guitar playing hasn’t progressed..in fact, as some have already stated, he seems more and more out of place in Audioslave.

Don’t get me wrong I LOVED RATM…but the movement they helped create has lost a lot of steam.

Note to RATM: How bout you guys focus on making a great album, gain back some of the cred that you have clearly lost, and THEN talk about trying to change the world.

Joaquin Andujar | 2/2/2007, 2:06 pm EST

RE Gary Glitter: nice euphamism “fooling around with underage girls.” It’s called molestation, rape, etc. Does Rolling Stone suddenly become less liberal, less politically correct because this child molester was in the music industry? Or because his victims were just little Asian girls? Pathetic.

Matt | 2/2/2007, 2:15 pm EST

How do all these people commenting here think that Tom Morello seriously thinks they could knock out the administration with a concert? It’s called tongue in cheek. Hopefully this concert is just the beginning of a reunited Rage, because Audioslave is not cutting it.

madd dogg | 2/2/2007, 2:20 pm EST

Tom Morello come on man if
you had any cred left you wouldn’t
be making those god fuckin awful
Audioslave albums. So give it up
oldtimer cause anger is a young
mans game.

angus | 2/2/2007, 2:48 pm EST

Rage was a great band and I’m glad they’re reuniting, but Tom is about 6 years to late. This admin is going down in flames already and there’s really not much else he can do to further that along. If he really wanted to make an impact they should’ve reunited for the 04′ election or stayed together through the 00′ election.

ajc254 | 2/2/2007, 2:54 pm EST

Why would Morello care if any of you think he has cred? Seems like the posts on here care more about bitching than they do about music. Anger a young man’s game? What a moron

lik roper | 2/2/2007, 3:27 pm EST

i actually enjoy audioslave in a ‘commercial’ sense, they have some really heavy tunes – but i always had an underlying feeling that the band was born out of censorship, which sort of left a bad taste in my mouth…

lik roper | 2/2/2007, 3:29 pm EST

i’m not mad at rage as such, maybe just mad at society for letting them down…

Johnny B. Goode | 2/2/2007, 3:36 pm EST

Oddjob you’re a POS, Morello doens’t know what he’s doing on solos, I’d like to see your fat ass up there doing it, so what if he wants to start the reunion now, atleast he’s trying to make a change in the world unlike most of us, better late than never.

charliemapleton | 2/2/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Rage Against The Machine-one of the most defiant, groundbreaking bands of the last 15,16 years.Needless to say, rebels with a cause. When Zach talks, people listen.Whatever issues they tackle-from the Mumia-Abu Jamal incarceration to the Mexicans’ grueling, tyrannical times working in sweatshops-they conquer. There’s so much belief and swagger they have when they make a statement.Bob Marley,Public Enemy, and Che Guevara are big influences in their movement.Altogether, reality,re silence, and furious funk rock is what supports their vision and truths.Who’s going to stop them from moving the crowd?Nobody-the matter at hand is what’s important!
So let’s get it!

You dig,Bush?

gary gliitter is god! | 2/2/2007, 3:47 pm EST

go gary!

afrock | 2/2/2007, 4:37 pm EST

rage playing again is cool, but why now. They say it is to effect change, I don’t believe it. People say they quit because of censorship, BS! They should have taken it straight to the people. Instead they left it to hearsay and inuendo. I hope they are reuniting just for the chance to play their music in front of fans, then I will applaud them. Music is only worth something if it is played for fun, for yourself. If it is to effect change, forget about it. Money talks b@#$%%it walks. CHANGE WILL ONLY OCCUR WHEN IT IS FORCED ON US. Otherwise it is ig business as usual.

Ender | 2/2/2007, 5:12 pm EST

Rage has the ability to fill stadiums. I’ll agree one concert may not be enough to get the message out but think what could happen if they inspire 20,000 people a night to simply pay attention to politics and how policy is shaping our lives. Look at what happened in the mid term elections. People got tired of the current course, en masse, and changed it. Rage has the power to sell their message to alot of people and I believe they take that responsibility seriously, even if you may not agree with them.

Also, I remember an intellignet, well written piece Morello wrote in Rolling Stone against going to war in Iraq. Obviously the Bush Administration did not listen but he was right and few argue today that being in Iraq is a good idea. Therefore, while I may not always agree with Morello’s politics, he deserves to be heard as he has been right in the past on certain issues.

Jacob | 2/2/2007, 5:19 pm EST

more like BOROPHYLL

john | 2/2/2007, 7:11 pm EST

LMAO…yeah he is going to bring down the Bush Administration…give me a break…Bush is already done…it looks like Rage just wants to CASH IN on some anti-Bush message just like Green Day did…I love Rage..dont always agree with their politics…ill go see them on tour if they tour…but lets get real..i hardly think this has anything to do with Bush…most people dont even remember who Rage Against the Machine is…this is just a smart way of making money

matt | 2/3/2007, 1:14 am EST

Morello is a smart man. He has a political science degree at Harvard. Plus, he’s one of the best guitarists on the planet. It’s always refreshing to see a band willing to stick it to the man.

Rage Against the Machine was an intelligent band who was socially aware and played great music. Today’s industry could use more bands of their calibur. Hopefully they stay together for good.

john | 2/3/2007, 2:17 am EST

Rage should cover “Money” ….because that is all they are after

DemonDemocracy | 2/3/2007, 4:31 am EST

Cornell can’t carry Zack’s proverbial “jock” when it comes kicking out the jams. Chris is more of crooner at this point of his carry and would rather tackle romance than Grass Roots movements and rights activism.
So stoked RATM is back at least for one date and hey a tour would kicks ass. Quick name 5 bands you’d rather see live, right now????

Yeah, can’t really think of that many who can bring like Rage. So back off Morello, I mean seriously if I was going to “react” and follow somebody it would be Tom over Nancy Pelosi…

I Threw a Brick | 2/3/2007, 6:55 am EST

Tom Morello, you are completely full of shit. Remember the RATM video (I can’t remember which one it is) where you merged the faces of Gore and Bush in a profound statement that the two candidates were essentially the same? I got a question for you, Tommy boy:

DO YOU FEEL THAT WAY NOW?

Every single prophecy made about Bush’s deficiencies came true, mostly due to 9/11, but even in spite of 9/11. I’m not going to trust you to have any political opinions now, Tom, if you couldn’t see what everybody else saw with perfect 20/20 vision back then.

Tom, I wouldn’t trust you to represent me as garbage commissioner, and I’m about as large-L LIBERAL as it gets. You have the typical rich musician’s “I can feel that way because I don’t have to worry about paying the bills” hubris. Not a good quality for a rock star who feels he knows what’s best for America’s poor, working poor, and minorities.

Gore was the better choice in 2000 because he was the electable one who wasn’t George Bush, and a majority of voting Americans knew it. Hopefully, Gore’ll win the presidency again in 2008. Are you going to do another RATM video merging Gore’s, Hillary Clinton’s or Barack Obama’s face with John McCain’s? Of course you will. You make these sweeping, ignorant, celebrity platitudes without any knowledge of the sacrifices the average American worker has to make to get by. And if you ever did, you have chosen to ignore them, which would make you even worse.

In an given election most Americans should vote for a Dem or a Rep because those are the only parties who will run an electable and able-to-govern candidate. These nitwits who want Ralph Nader in the White House might as well join a rogue militia and volunteer to die in the next Civil War his policies would create. Both he and any other third-party, libertarian or independent candidate would be thousands of times more divisive than Bush, Tom, and you know that. But you can go on with your political bullshit because, like that independent libertarian Stephen Colbert, you can decide what is best for families that have to choose between heat and groceries from either your Malibu home or your Miami Beach home.

You’re a musician who believes you know what’s best for us, Tom, so I don’t expect you to live in the real world. But I’m asking you to nonetheless. Even Bono knows that to get his point across about his pet projects like African debt he has to meet with Bush and address him as an equal human being and live partially in the real world.

You’re a coward, Tom. 2003 was the time to go after Bush, but you didn’t. Now both you and the rest of RATM are crawling out of the woodwork because it’s safer for your ego. A Dem congress, an American public turning against the war, and the prospect of cashing in on the fashionable, safe, anti-Bush bandwagon: you just see dollar signs don’t you, Tom?

Being anti-Bush is eminently justified, and joining the bandwagon is justified for ordinary Americans who have suddenly realized they’ve been lied to. But YOU KNEW Bush was an imperialist despot in 2003, Tom, and you stuck your head in the sand because you feared a Fox News “Tom Morello is anti-American” smear job. Now, as you no doubt know, a Fox News smear job is practically a prerequisite to being accepted in the political elite in the current climate. Being in Audioslave with the introspective Chris Cornell, playing songs about suicidal feelings and gloom and doom, helped you keep a low profile in 2003, no doubt.

Where the fuck were you in 2003 when it mattered, Tom, and why is it so safe to bring the RATM machine out of mothballs so you can tell us all in profound interviews on MTV why this is a revolution and why some band represents what’s best for America, as long as we pay our Ticketmaster service charges for your concerts?

BECAUSE YOU AREN’T A RENEGADE NOW. YOU NEVER WERE.

By the way, Tom, the real revolution was the 2006 Dem takeover of congress, Tom, and YOU HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! Thank God.

matt | 2/3/2007, 1:00 pm EST

Rage isn’t doing this for the money. If they wanted money, they would have not bothered and focused on Audioslave.

Zach | 2/3/2007, 5:01 pm EST

Why didn’t anybody want to change the world a couple of years ago when ‘ole Georgie got into office? Everyone is just cashing in on the anti-Bush thing. It is now officially “cool” to hate Bush so every single star is going to nail him. Makes me sick.

gabe | 2/3/2007, 5:59 pm EST

john is stirring up the hornets nest… your average attached to society comment minus some intelligent thought and ignorance in understanding what RATM is all about. go listen to your brittney spears.

azio | 2/3/2007, 8:47 pm EST

how can you say getting rage back together no mention of zach de loroch no zack no rage

Anon | 2/3/2007, 9:13 pm EST

What happened to everyone’s sense of humour? If you think Morello was being serious, then perhaps you should stick to listening to Justin singing “I’m bringing sexy back” ;) .

Freidrich | 2/4/2007, 1:39 pm EST

All Tom is saying is that he and rage against the machine are simply a knee-jerk reaction to social conditions. Isn’t that true? And so what if that knee-jerk requires a rational account after the fact? He went to harvard, when he acts he rationalizes it so he can proceed with a good conscience. Please don’t take the second part too seriously.

john | 2/4/2007, 4:57 pm EST

hey gabe….all im saying its a little late for rage to go after bush because bush is done…and is it a coincidence that Audioslaves last record tanked…and zack hasnt done anything in 10 years? back to the well for rage….and ill be there if they go on tour…i like their music and SOME of their message….

KLiffee | 2/4/2007, 9:05 pm EST

We weren’t railing against bush 2 yrs ago? are you high? or did you just come out of a coma, zach?
more than half the US hated bush since day one and has been fighting to get rid of him and is fellow criminals.
