The 25 Best Super Bowl Commercials Ever

2/2/07, 6:06 pm EST

super bowl commercials
Blame the relentless media hype, the rampant commercialism or the mind-numbingly dull Seattle Seahawks all you want: Super Bowl commercials have become a bigger entertainment draw than the game itself. The average thirty-second spot this year cost a whopping $2.6 million — that’s $86,666 per second of ad time (compared with a bargain $42,000 for a full thirty seconds during the first Super Bowl forty years ago). But with 58 perecent of viewers claiming they pay more attention to the commercials than the game itself, barring a Peyton Manning wardrobe malfunction, chances are good your office Monday morning will be talking about one of the 60 different ads rather than anything that actually happened on the field.

Luckily, the other side of that coin is that because everyone’s watching, the Super Bowl is traditionally a showcase for the best and brightest the ad world has to offer. This week we’re counting down the 25 greatest Super Bowl ads of all time. Will a 2007 ad force its way into the top spot? We’ll have to wait until Sunday night to find out.

25. Mmm…Magical Beer (2005)
24. Who Are You Again? (2000)
23. Sucked In (1995)
22. Immaculate Reproduction (1974)
21. Supreme Court (1993)
20. Dream On (2007)
19. Gratuity Included (2005)
18. Night at the Museum (1996)
17. A Mint In Your Pillow (2000)
16. Broadway Joe Gets Creamed (1972)
15. The Original Party Animal (1987)
14. It’s a Miracle! (2000)
13. Ship of Fools (2006)
12. From Suck to Blow (1998)
11. Can You Hear Me Now? (2004)
10. The Ultimate Waste of Money (1999)
9. Beer Nuts (2004)
8. The Kids Are Alright (1999)
7. Doctor Death (2006)
6. We’re Not Gonna Take it (1984)
5. The First Family of Comedy (2004)
4. Violence in the Workplace (2003)
3. Heart of Gold (1980)

I want to make a suggestion that will make alll of the creaters of this sight WAY happier. Delete this and become a doctor or a lawyer.

Ali Landy Doritos | 1/27/2008, 2:10 pm EST

The Ali Landry Doritos were pretty good. Then there was a Yasminee Bleeth one at a insurance company. Also two 1993 Chevy Chase Doritos commercials were funny. Plus Michael Jordan and Larry Bird did a 1991 commercial for McDonalds then the next year they did it again with Charles Barkley. Also 1992 Cindy Crawford Pepsi was classic and in 2000 she did a new one with a her child.

the Budweiser commercial during the 2001 super bowl where the clydesdales trott through several american towns up to the (fallen) twin towers and kneel down in sorrow and respect.

By far the most poignant commercial I have ever seen.

BigSingh | 2/28/2007, 1:48 pm EST

Also from one past: Nissan, when the pigeons met like they were in a war room making plans to taret the Nissan truck while “Top Gun” played.

BigSingh | 2/28/2007, 1:46 pm EST

This year’s ads for CareerBuilder.com had me rolling on the floor laughing because sometimes it feels like where I work it is like that. Points go to the Chinese food delivery guy in the gladiator’s ring when then one guy said, “You’re the delivery guy. You don’t even work here.”

The Frito-Lay group of companies made a tear come to my eye with the significance of the Super Bowl have two Black coaches for the first time.

Help a sista out | 2/22/2007, 4:26 pm EST

Does anybody know who the artist is playing the jazzy piano solo on that Black History Month Coca-Cola Commercial this year?

ecuaman | 2/5/2007, 7:54 pm EST

you missed the e-trade monkey add
“we just wasted 2 million dollars, what are you doing with your money”

Donomite | 2/5/2007, 6:45 pm EST

That 1984 commercial sucks anyways

Shaun Alexander | 2/5/2007, 10:35 am EST

The Apple 1984 ad is #6 on their list, brainiac.

josh | 2/4/2007, 4:48 pm EST

the jimi hendrix pepsi vs coke/guitar vs accordian

kbRevelator | 2/4/2007, 2:15 pm EST

if you guys never make a list of anything again I’ll be happy.

I love how you admit the miserable failures of certain ads like the computer.com one and still put it on the freakin list. And any superbowl ad list without Apple’s 1984 can’t be taken seriously.

Eric | 2/4/2007, 9:17 am EST

How about the Nissan “GI Joe steals Barbie” from the 90’s? Van Halen blasting in the background! THAT should be on a Rolling Stone list!

TigerPants | 2/3/2007, 11:54 pm EST

Budweiser horses bowing to the remains of the Trade Center. Damn, it still gets me.

jordan | 2/3/2007, 7:46 pm EST

what about the american express ads with jerry seinfeld?

Dan | 2/3/2007, 5:33 pm EST

you guys totally blew it…what about the birds that took went to the batroom on all the cars?

bk | 2/3/2007, 9:25 am EST

1984 is the best ad ever made by many opinions in the ad industry. It should have made it in the list.

rone | 2/2/2007, 10:52 pm EST

totally right, how could Wasabi not make the list. give me a break?

and how could Spuds make it, come on those ads were lame the 1st time around.

and give me a break with the f-ball fan chest beating. ‘your’ team is just a spreadsheet. it could be anywhere in any town and owes you fans nothing.

well other than you watch the commercials and buy the products. “hey, let’s spin a SUV’s wheels in the dust, they always sucker for that move….”, they say. and you follow.

socalguy111 | 2/2/2007, 10:47 pm EST

A little disappointed in your “top 25″ of all time…
Who determined these anyway???
You missed quite a few good ones such as the “Pepsi Bears”, “Miss America and the Doritos”, “Wasabi” and those are just a few that come to mind right off hand… I can name a lot more that should have made your cut if I really thought about it…
It’s too bad you don’t let your readers vote. I bet more than half of the chosen won’t even make the cut…

Bewilderbeast | 2/2/2007, 2:01 pm EST

Seriously. The Sehawks: Not that awesome. And I’m FROM Seattle. Get over it, people.

Alex | 2/2/2007, 1:06 pm EST

What data is that count down based on?

dpr | 2/2/2007, 11:14 am EST

I don’t understand the random anti-Seahawks thing. What exactly makes them so dull? Is it cause they aren’t from New York or Boston? Heaven forbid. They’ve had a top offense for the last few yeaars. Want a dull team? Try the Houston Texans or Oakland Raiders.

Anyhow, sure hope the Terry Tate: Office Linebacker commercial lands in the top five. If not, check it out on YouTube yourself.

23fan | 2/1/2007, 10:10 pm EST

Thanks for bashing the Seahawks. That really makes us feel good over here.

You’re toeing the line, RS.

Grout_Trout | 2/1/2007, 6:13 pm EST

Ditto the last comment. This is a “MUSIC” magazine, right?

And as far as this comment goes: the mind-numbingly dull Seattle Seahawks” and the cocksucker that wrote this? Go fuck yourself you shiteating fucktowel.

BohemianRevenge | 1/31/2007, 9:02 pm EST

That is SO what KFed is going to be doing for the rest of his life.

Mandela | 1/31/2007, 6:58 pm EST

everyone already knows the number one commercial will be the 1984 apple commercail, we all know it shall prevail.

saad | 1/31/2007, 12:16 pm EST

that federline one is pretty funny…who knew the guy had a sense of humor….

Ken Heini | 1/30/2007, 7:07 pm EST

You’d better include Heiniken’s “Premature Pour” in the topp listing. I laugh about to this day.

mike | 1/30/2007, 7:00 pm EST

Dude let it go. Im from seattle to, and by now you should be used to Anyone who resides on the east coast insulting the Seahawks for no reason. Rollingstone a Music magazine is just another bandwagoner of Pacific Northwest haters, theres a new one every day.

Matt | 1/30/2007, 12:34 pm EST

I’m not sure if this was a superbowl add, but does anybody remember the three or four different reebok commercials featuring office linebacker “Terrible” Terry Tate?

*huge tackle* WOOOOOO!! BREAK WAS OVER, 15 MINUTES AGO, B*TCH!!

*huge tackle* WOOO!! YOU CAN’T BRING THAT WEAK-ASS STUFF UP IN THIS HUMPY-BUMPY!! YOU KILL THE JO, YOU MAKE SOME MO!! YOU KNOW THAT BABY!!

MegaSudz | 1/30/2007, 11:54 am EST

I always think of the MAC/1984 commercial as the SuperBowl add of adds. I do miss the Masterlock add where they would shoot the lock, as well as the entire media budget for the year!

Boner | 1/30/2007, 10:27 am EST

Seahawks and Steelers both suck ass.

twodopeboysinacadillac | 1/30/2007, 9:06 am EST

yo, ya’ll is trick ass bustas, ya hear. fuck free world

Shaun Alexander | 1/30/2007, 9:03 am EST

How dare they talk about the Seahawks like that? Did you not watch the Super Bowl last year? Worst ever, by far, and the Seahawks complete inability to do ANYTHING right was the main reason. The Steelers practicaly handed them the game half a dozen time, and Hasselbaeck and Co. said “no thanks.”

the truth | 1/30/2007, 3:05 am EST

fall out bot is for tools

influx16 | 1/30/2007, 1:02 am EST

how dare you talk about the Seahawks like that man. I have lost respect for what I once thought was a pretty dope magazine. I’ll tell you what’s mind numbingly dull, 3 and 1/2 stars for fall out boy? What’s with this emo crap that you guys give credibility to? Shame on you RS.

BushCrimeFamily | 1/29/2007, 11:33 pm EST

The Super Bowl is like a national holiday. Enjoy it.

jill hives | 1/29/2007, 7:50 pm EST

i usually don’t gripe, but this really does seem like it belongs on some meathead sports website rather than a meathead music website. weak! a/w, the only football spot i remember is the talking frogs budweiser one - was that even a super bowl ad?

Dare To Hear A Fool | 1/29/2007, 6:32 pm EST

the mt. dew/queen add better be on the list. “i see a little silhouetteo of a can, mt. dew, mt. dew…” THE best superbowl add EVER!

bat chain puller | 1/29/2007, 6:03 pm EST

You guys don’t have anything better to ponder, sad for a “music” magazine.
