Watch an Amateur Drummer Twitch Uncontrollably!

2/1/07, 12:20 pm EST

We have to endorse any competition that realizes heavy metal dreams. First, we loved the World Air Guitar Championships. Now we’re dealing with the World’s Fastest Drummer competition, an event that determines the world’s “Fastest Bare Hands” and that stages the “Battle of the Feet” with a torturous 15-minute kick-drum endurance marathon. Considering gladiators like Tim “Silver Feet” Waterson and Jotan “Shakin’ Vibration” Afanador, shouldn’t we be pumped?

The big story at last month’s WFD was Caitlin “Lead Foot” Kalafus, who at the age of fourteen was named World’s Fastest Female Drummer. But the ultimate WFD record holder remains Mike “Da Man” Mangini, who last year dropped an unprecedented 1,247 single beats in a 60-second span.

Right. But if Mangini’s in a band, we don’t know it. How would famous dudes like Dave Grohl fare in this competition? Lars Ulrich? Which drummer would you like to see slay the amateurs?

Lars Ulrich is a terrible fucking drummer. End of story.

mort3965 | 2/1/2007, 12:47 pm EST

Not very funky.

Urie | 2/1/2007, 12:50 pm EST

Keith Moon would kick their asses, as well as John Bonham

dan | 2/1/2007, 12:56 pm EST

mangini is actually a pretty accomplished drummer, not an amateur by any means. among other things, he was steve vai’s touring drummer for about 4 years.

B-Rett | 2/1/2007, 1:02 pm EST

Grohl would kick ass.

MegaSudz | 2/1/2007, 1:05 pm EST

If this is the Mike Mangini I am thinking of, he would wipe the floor with Lars Ulrich. He is by no means an amature. I do remeber him as a young kid playing in accomplished bands in the Boston music scene. Are you sure Rolling Stone is still a music magazine.

The Dude | 2/1/2007, 1:05 pm EST

It’s nice to see that the marching band nerds finally have something to aspire to. Keith Moon and John Bonham wouldn’t be able to win this kind of a pointless competition because they were amazing drum kit players who understond better than anyone how to rock. They never would have wasted their time and talent on something as unmusical as how many notes can you play in a certain amount of time and I guarantee you none of these guys could play a kit without sounding like a boring mathmatical robot.

vemrion | 2/1/2007, 1:08 pm EST

Lars would come in dead last. On the other hand, he might keep a beat you’d be interested in actually listening to.

Just hope he doesn’t start talking.

Boner | 2/1/2007, 1:11 pm EST

Joey Jordison is by far the best drummer ever in popular music. Moon and Bonham were innovators. Grohl and Lars were just average.

The Dude | 2/1/2007, 1:16 pm EST

Joey Jordison is undoubtably an awesome drummer who deserves a shitload of credit. “best drummer ever in popular music” sounds pretty damn ignorant though.

Skullfreak | 2/1/2007, 1:27 pm EST

Travis Barker would murder all of them

The Dude | 2/1/2007, 1:39 pm EST

Travis Barker!? That’s a joke right?

will | 2/1/2007, 1:41 pm EST

Lars Ulrich is a Cock Sucker I hate him, not much on Metallica either, but only he irritates me.

johnny | 2/1/2007, 1:41 pm EST

lars is awesome! end of story

will | 2/1/2007, 1:42 pm EST

What about Peter Chris now there is a drummer.

teef | 2/1/2007, 1:45 pm EST

grohl would obviously do well but Fab moretti from the strokes wouldn’t be too shabby

Rolling Stone is dumb | 2/1/2007, 1:46 pm EST

Do some research next time you write an article, its pretty sad that this is a music mag and the writers don’t know the facts. Mangini is a pro-drummer,also teaches at Berkely. I don’t think lars or grohl will be slaying anything. If you want to talk about style and having a distictive sound then you might get some cool opinions. Like Bonzo has his own sound and the same with Moon. Amateur? you’re crazy.

dumbass | 2/1/2007, 1:47 pm EST

meg white

Scott P | 2/1/2007, 1:50 pm EST

Glenn Kotche from Wilco would get my vote, the guy is astounding with what he can do live.

JamieZ | 2/1/2007, 2:05 pm EST

Neil Peart from Rush…

Sean T | 2/1/2007, 2:29 pm EST

I dont care how many times or for how long somebody can pound away on a double bass pedal…that requires no skill, just a lot of muscle training and endurance. Here are the guys that can hold some serious grooves… something this contest obviously doesn’t care about:

John Bonham
Ginger Baker
Stuart Copeland
Keith Moon
Mitch Mitchell
Carter Beauford
Neil Peart
Matt Abts
Chad Smith
…the list goes on and on…

PS – I’d take Ringo over Lars anyday

jigo | 2/1/2007, 3:14 pm EST

Animal from The Muppet Show beats them all.

Steve | 2/1/2007, 3:35 pm EST

If Rolling Stone had taken 10 seconds to search “Mike Mangini” on wikipedia, they would’ve found:

“Michael Mangini (born April 18, 1963 in Newton, Massachusetts, USA) is a celebrated drummer who has played for Annihilator, Extreme, Steve Vai, Tribe Of Judah, and more recently, James LaBrie.”

So while he may have evaded RS’s eye by not being in a band with Jack White, he hardly has a blank resume.

Dave Grohl is a great drummer for what he does, but I don’t think he’d fare well in a competition like this. Lars Ulrich can’t even keep the same tempo during a drum fill, I’m sure he’d get his ass handed to him by any of these amateurs.

watch mike perform, especially the last minute. it’s amazing!

no | 2/1/2007, 4:08 pm EST

what a stupid contest!

capitol alphabet | 2/1/2007, 4:40 pm EST

John Bonham

Marc | 2/1/2007, 6:02 pm EST

Tim Alexander for Primus would kick ass in a real drumming contest(not whatever the hell this is). But Ringo Starr or Meg White or that guy with one arm from Def Leppard have to be the greatest drummers ever.

joe | 2/1/2007, 6:07 pm EST

In tomorrow’s Rolling Stone Daily Blog

We’ve uncovered some old footage of what seems to be a pretty good bass player from the 70’s and 80’s. Watch this Jaco guy shred! We hear he passed away though (a car wreck or something)… had he stuck around longer he might someday have played as well as Flea.

ilovedouches | 2/1/2007, 8:06 pm EST

Lars Ulrich is my reason for living

miccc | 2/1/2007, 10:56 pm EST

John Henry Bonham! A distant second, Karen Carpenter of course.

DGG | 2/2/2007, 6:19 am EST

Mike Mangini played in the final Extreme album, 1995’s “Waiting for the punchline”.

ricky | 2/2/2007, 8:30 am EST

Mike Mangini play with Steve Vai is it a unknow name? I dont dont think so you must correct that!

Killer | 2/5/2007, 10:13 pm EST

WFD Rocks Ass! I have seen Mangini with vai, extreme and in clinic. Lars can’t even come close. Only dude alive may be Travis Barker.

lawrence | 2/5/2007, 10:13 pm EST

magini is the fastest!

pantera fan | 2/6/2007, 8:13 am EST

travis? you gotta be kiddin me, right? Vinnie Paul would kill travie.

Travis Fan | 2/6/2007, 3:19 pm EST

Travis is actually a very good drummer. Don’t judge by only his Blink stuff.

Clockwork Orange | 2/6/2007, 3:21 pm EST

From the official WFD site they say the big story is that Mike ‘Machine’ Mallais’s amazing foot speed enabled him to break 3 bass drum records! ‘Machine’ even beat Tim ‘Silver Feet’ Waterson’s 6 year old foot record! http://www.worldsfastestdru mmer. com

As for Mangini, there is none better. The guy has amazing speed, chops, and can groove his ass off. Check out any of his videos with Extreme and Tribe of Juhah on YouTube and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

And to Sean T, if you think it requires no skill or technique, why don’t you step up and try it?

Gangsta Eddie | 2/6/2007, 6:16 pm EST

Moon and Bonham wouldn’t have wasted their time and talent on something as unmusical as this. They’d rather waste their time choking to death on their own vomit.

susie | 2/6/2007, 6:58 pm EST

Neil Peart from Rush…
faster than dude from steve vai? i wouldn’t think so.

susie | 2/6/2007, 7:05 pm EST

hahaha! lol, that’s funny shit, sad but we may see it after this one.

slip666 | 2/6/2007, 9:58 pm EST

Joey Jordison can win it!

WFD(female feet)-Caitlin's Dad | 2/8/2007, 8:04 am EST

Why does it have to be one against another. All the drummers mentioned are great players…ALL of them. Caitlin entered the contest for fun and won the World’s Fastest Feet (Female Division) 799 single strokes in 60 seconds – but the best part was meeting a group of awesome people who were having fun with music. Thanks to everyone at “World’s Fastest Drummer” for a great competition and for being so nice to all the participants. Everybody else….lighten up….and go get a “drumometer” and see if you can do what these musicians did. Check out 14 year old Caitlin and see that she’s MORE THEN FAST FEET at http://www.caitlindrums.com

Peace, Caitlin’s Dad

RE: Caitlin's Dad | 2/8/2007, 11:39 am EST

Finally someone with the right attitude…

billycody9 | 5/11/2007, 12:23 pm EST

Every time you see a WFD related blog it’s always the same thing, with a bunch of noobs shooting off about how some other guy is faster, better etc. All the WFD guys are pros and world class set players, even the young guys. They even have a 17 year old named Matt Smith who’s almost as fast as Mangini. Jordison would be wiped out at one of these things. Slamming WFD guys is nothing but jealousy.
