Coldplay Jump the Gun

1/31/07, 5:43 pm EST

Considering our love for the above clip — in which Chris Martin shamelessly promotes a fake “Best of Coldplay” — you can imagine our surprise when today, news arrived that that Coldplay will in fact be releasing something called The Singles 1999-2006, a collection that gathers the band’s well-known singles, B-sides, and their debut EP The Blue Room. To make matters more confusing, this set will be released ONLY on 7″ vinyl. We assumed this kind of move was reserved for much-cooler indie bands. Evidently, working with Brian Eno has put high-brow ideas in Chris Martin’s head. We may be wrong, but do any Coldplay fans even own a record player? Doubtful.

So before you go rummaging through your parents’ attic looking for one of these contraptions, we ask another question: Is it appropriate for Coldplay, with only three albums under their belt, to be releasing a “Best-Of”? It was only seven years ago that we thought their debut hit “Yellow” was the new single by fellow fragile U.K. rockers Travis. Bands like Radiohead and the White Stripes, who have larger catalogues, have held off releasing greatest hits compilations. Is it too little, too soon for a Coldplay collection? Or are you pumped?

oHHRO5 U cool ))

lexie | 8/13/2007, 1:25 am EST

Not only does Coldplay have excellent instrumentals and vocals, they also promote worthwhile causes that no other bands or artists do. Everyone has their own personal taste in music–I personally love Coldplay–and if you don’t appreciate Coldplay’s style, then don’t buy the upcoming collection. It may or may not be a ’statement’ but in reality it doesn’t really matter–LET THE MUSIC PLAY!

jamie | 3/3/2007, 5:43 pm EST

Coldplay are so goddamn awful. What the hell is the world coming to where crap like this passes as music?

Anonymous | 2/2/2007, 5:20 pm EST

So you’re admitting to liking the Bee Gees. And Coldplay fans are gay? I don’t claim to be a fan of either but it seems to me that people are making too big of a deal out of a singles release from a popular band. And EMO. I don’t think Coldplay sings about how everything is black nor do they cut themselves. I guess a few power chords and a scream every now and then in their songs would catapult them into your liking.

nyyfan178 | 2/1/2007, 11:36 pm EST

Yeah, Panic at the Disco sucks ass.

go to youtube and check out their shitty live cover of Karma Police. at least coldplay has enough respect for radiohead to never ruin a great song like that

anonymous | 2/1/2007, 11:23 pm EST

you people have nothing better to do then talk about how much coldplay sucks? they are releasing their b-sides with their singles….big f***ing deal…let’s talk about my chemical romance, or the bee gees, or these sad bands that try to hang around for 40 years that are making roller coasters and commercials. rollingstone just put Panic! at the Disco on their cover…come on…we’re worried about Coldplay?

Samantha B. | 2/1/2007, 9:44 pm EST

Tuohy, what a ridiculous statement. I think you meant to say 35-year-old soccer moms.

Tuohy | 2/1/2007, 9:00 pm EST

Coldplay sucks more than any other band ever. Not only do they not deserve a greatest hits album, they don’t deserve a record deal. This may sound outrageous to all of the 40 year old moms out there, but it’s true.
Noel Gallagher forever.

Erin | 2/1/2007, 8:03 pm EST

What I don’t understand is that first you RS guys complain about a band putting out a “best of” cd that isn’t actually anything of the sort, then you take your worthless argument to suggest that people who listen to Coldplay are in some way not real music listeners because they don’t have record players (which you can only speculate on). It seems the only thing you have left to claim credibility with is the issue that coldplay isn’t “cool.” Gee, I thought people who wrote about music actually talked about music. But I’m sorry, maybe I’m missing the point that it’s really your job to labeling what’s “cool.” Are you still in high school?

Tenninety | 2/1/2007, 7:46 pm EST

Prediction, in about five years being a fan of Coldplay will be about as lame as being a fan of Toto or Journey.

Chuck | 2/1/2007, 7:31 pm EST

I love Coldplay, and one day a greatest hits would be great, but right now I don’t picture it was very necessary. A b-sides collection, maybe, but it’s a bit much to already release the singles. Maybe they got some sort of contract deal that says they have to? I dunno…silverchair had to do that after 3 albums against their will, as they switched labels and got raped by their former label into making a best of. Anyways…

someone | 2/1/2007, 7:25 pm EST

You people get on my nerves. No one complains about the Dave Matthews Band putting out more live albums than studio albums. This isn’t even a “Best of…” It’s singles from their first 3 albums along with the b-sides all in one package…oh Wiser…Kraftwerk gave Coldplay permission to use that riff in Talk. Ouch.

Mary | 2/1/2007, 6:58 pm EST

It’s not a best of CD or it would have been called a best of. I think the guy who wrote this news bit for RS should learn how to read instead of being eager to launch yet another insipid argument against coldplay. Come up with actual argument for why you believe this band sucks instead of being upset that you aren’t as famous and can’t sleep with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Hoyle | 2/1/2007, 6:10 pm EST

Coldplay is a great band but come on guys…only 3 full-length studio albums? Geez! Oasis just put out a “best of” after 12 years! Coldplay should be busy planning another studio album, not a greatest hits…for Christ sake they already have a live album out.

Sure...... | 2/1/2007, 6:00 pm EST

Coldplay licks pouch.

steph | 2/1/2007, 5:26 pm EST

I have been a coldplay fan for 6 years and believe it is not time for a “Best Of” album. They were popular with me years beford Ms. Paltrow stepped into the scene. I would love the vinyl collection though. I am 28 years old and have owned several record players in my lifetime.

Nmar | 2/1/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Technically, they already released a greatest hits cd. The 2003 Live CD practically is a greatest hits. Buuuut, being a Coldplay fan, I gotta insist on waiting until 2010 to release a greatest hits. Not enough material yet. They a good band, but just haven’t been around enough yet to do a Greatest Hits

RyLow | 2/1/2007, 4:46 pm EST

Any band with as many international hits off 3 albums as Coldplay will get a greatest hits package nowadays.

Just Deal With It.

Everybody SHADDUP! | 2/1/2007, 4:42 pm EST

The Wiser | 2/1/2007, 4:20 pm EST

Coldplay = Background music for a Starbucks. I have never seen a band so undeserving of popularity and attention. I think their popularity springs from their connection to Gwyneth Paltrow. Coldgay’s music is incredibly dull and lame. Their “hit” songs would never have been hits in any other decade; unfortunately the planet is devoid of good music these days. They are musically uninteresting and lyrically awful. I have listened to their music with an open mind, but I just don’t see the appeal. Most of it is fruity as hell. I guess if you’re overly effeminate you might find something to like about them. How anyone can stand Chris Martin’s irritating, whiny voice is beyond me. Oh, and by the way their song Talk is a rip-off of a Kraftwerk song called Computer Love. Stealing from Kraftwerk, how embarrassing. Ouch, that’s gotta hurt.

jill hives | 2/1/2007, 3:09 pm EST

this story appeared on pitchfork yesterday - rs always seems about a day behind. anyway, as someone else said, this is a special singles collection, not a best-of or greatest hits, obviously for hardcore fans of the group. and it’s a good way to market extra songs that didn’t make it onto studio albums. i am not a coldplay fan, but it sounds like an attractive set and if their numerous fans are into it, then screw everyone else, myself included.

Dude | 2/1/2007, 3:03 pm EST

Indie bands are made up of dorks and losers that nobody likes. That’s why they’re indie and not famous.

waz416 | 2/1/2007, 2:52 pm EST

Im ure its the record lable’s idea…..bands input or not…the label will go ahead….!!!….so the band thoguth they might make it interesting makin it a record or wahtever…!!..anywayz…label s have a habit of makin money oof of artist they have signed u know…..remember Hillary Duff greatest hits after 2 albums..??…!!…PEAC EOUT

rockstar70 | 2/1/2007, 2:43 pm EST

Coldplay doesn’t deserve a Record deal much less a Greatist hits. Tell the band to stop wasting their time and money on crap and give their fans(NOT ME) what they really want…….a NEW album!!

Tom | 2/1/2007, 1:51 pm EST

Too early for a greatest hits. I remember the old days when a group didn’t release a greatest hits LP until they had split or at least released 6-8 major albums.

p.s. Coldplay, please change up your set list next time your on tour. If I go see two shows in a row I would like it if I didn’t hear the same songs in the exact same slot. Thanks

yeaaaaaaastan | 2/1/2007, 12:54 pm EST

if chris martin can go on extras and look like such a oduche bag, i’d say he deserves a greatest hits album.

The best line was “can we have the starving children holding copies of the album?”

jungleland | 2/1/2007, 12:17 pm EST

Why not just a b-sides CD? That would make more sense.

mato | 2/1/2007, 11:21 am EST

3 albums and a greatest hits vinyl? what a joke… it just means their bank accounts are emptying faster than they were expecting.

AC/DC are still running around (more or less) and haven’t done anything of the sort…

Rob | 2/1/2007, 10:49 am EST

more bands should release vinyl.

Josh W. | 2/1/2007, 10:30 am EST

Um… How long did it take the Beatles to put out a greatest hits??? And how many number 1’s did they have???… Not that I am comparing the two in any way shape or form. The Beatles are obviously far and above anything that coldplay will ever reach. But I can only see the validity in putting out a greatest hits if you are in fact great… Coldplay is good but not great. And when bands put out greatest hits its either because they are about to break up, already broken up, dead, or have been around the block for at least 20 years. They are basically signing their own death warrant by putting out a greatest hits way to soon.

bilo | 2/1/2007, 10:18 am EST

this is not a best of… its a singles box set…. Oasis released one for each of there first cd’s… i like records too.

NY Nate | 2/1/2007, 10:14 am EST

My question is how are they gonna put all that material onto a 7″? A seven inch holds two tunes. So will it be a collection of seven or eight 7-inches? I’m into the idea, though. I try to get as much music as I can on vinyl. I guess I’m one of those few Americans who have a record player. What up, e-bay?

loveexplosion | 2/1/2007, 10:14 am EST

jimi hendrix smash hits, enough said. You think that was too early

Bigwreck | 2/1/2007, 10:04 am EST

They already have a greatest hits album don’t they? It’s called Parachutes? Cause everything else after that has totally honked. Get off your high horse Chris, you freal, and stop calling your kids stupid names!

Lame Limey's | 2/1/2007, 10:03 am EST

You know how i know you are gay? You Like COLDPLAY

peter lacount | 2/1/2007, 9:57 am EST

you guys are all retarded. this video is hilarious, coldplays is really not my bag, but in the modern age of record sales sagging, they need to do this greatest hits album to make the monies.

Kev | 2/1/2007, 9:39 am EST

Chris-so wrong.
Oasis’ ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ was soooo much better than X&Y.
Plus Oasis B-Sides crush Coldplay. Travis is better than Coldplay.

CurtMayfield | 2/1/2007, 9:36 am EST

I think they have 12 hits already, although I would like them to perhaps make one more first, but I guess they could make one if they felt necessary and/ or in the contract. I think Dave Matthews has a good model of Greatest Hits albums, don’t do it unless your contractually obligated and/ or until you’ve got 7 L.P.s under your belt. Coldplay should definitly wait for this one, at least until they make a crappy album.

Will | 2/1/2007, 9:03 am EST

(this is Will #1 by the way)

A thought: The Eagles released three full studio albums before their first Greatest Hits collection. That said, I’m not saying one band is better than the other (Eagles vs. Coldplay), nor am I saying that I still believe Coldplay is releasing a ‘Greatest Hits’ collection. What I’m saying is if a band who’s now in the Hall of Fame can release a collection of previously released songs after only three albums, why can’t a current band who’s had more than moderate success do the same?

The vinyl idea is still stupid, though,… if you’re going to do that, you’d best make it a UK release only since barely anyone here in the US has a working record player…

drew | 2/1/2007, 8:51 am EST

i dont really care either way, because its only a product, and im not forced to buy it.

and considering the singles set only comes on vinyl, sounds more like a gift for really hardcore fans of coldplay, so god bless.

i used to be crazy for a band like alice in chains, i wouldnt have cared what the fuck they called but if they had released an expensive box set, with only three full albums under their belt, i would have ran out to get it in a heart beat…

oh they did? oh yeah, and i already bought it!

WHO CARES!!!

as long as britney doesn’t put out a ‘best-of’ then what are we really talking about… ???

:)

matthew6666767 | 2/1/2007, 8:34 am EST

10 albums and then a greatest hits LP. Also at least 3 Live LP.

Adam | 2/1/2007, 8:25 am EST

Coldplay sucks…

The Vault | 2/1/2007, 8:15 am EST

Coldplay already has four greatest hits albums released… 3 studio, and 1 live.

matt4p | 2/1/2007, 7:15 am EST

minimum 5 albums or 10 years. Really should only have the singles on. no new tracks as that just rips off fans who want those tracks only. no b-sides as they are not actually GH’s.

chris | 2/1/2007, 6:52 am EST

fact of the matter is all you doubters! coldplays b sides are far better than the fony pop bands out today.. infact the early b sides are where the band should have stayed direction wise a little longer.aslong as they dnt get nominated for best uk band (oasis who cant even string a new album together worth hearing) at the nme awards for the release im fine with the new records..

Me | 2/1/2007, 6:42 am EST

Do you need great hits for a greatest hits album? Not possible for a crap band like Coldplay.

Who names their child Apple for f’s sake? What is the next one to be called Star Fruit?

KEITHMOON | 2/1/2007, 5:48 am EST

Just think how many “greatest hits” collections MY old band has…

Kris Holiday | 2/1/2007, 5:15 am EST

way too soon! in my opinion 6 albums then ur allowed a greatest hits. 6!!!

shane | 2/1/2007, 4:53 am EST

I think the problem is the length of discs.

When Elton John released his first greatest hits an album was only 10 tracks long.

By that standard:
Yellow, Trouble, In My Place, The Scientist, Clocks, God Put a Smile, Speed of Sound, Talk, Fix You and one new song seems like an excellent hits package.

however, with the expectation that everyone must use every available minute on a disc it’s way too early.

Jon | 2/1/2007, 4:37 am EST

already have coldplay’s greatest hits it’s called an ipod

Hunter | 2/1/2007, 4:17 am EST

that clip just got a lot more respect for coldplay out of me.

ljs with love... | 2/1/2007, 1:58 am EST

if you think the people who hate coldplay can’t spell, you should check out the posts on the pages relating to panic! of fall out whatever… now that’s funny.

sharon | 2/1/2007, 1:36 am EST

before these people trash Coldplay they should learn how to spell………. love, Sharon

sharon | 2/1/2007, 1:32 am EST

I think its a great idea– yes, i have a turntable — and Zachery Newman should learn to keep his ugly mind focused on something other than Coldplay killing themselves——- what a fucked thing to say- my son did. and noone wants to hear your vicious seedy little thoughts online.. I saw Coldplay and to hear their b sides would be delicious…..

Sam | 2/1/2007, 1:32 am EST

Is it suprising? No. Anyone with two eyes open the past year and a half could figure out that a “hiatus” was coming for coldplay. What happens when huge selling pop bands do this? They release something to remind people that their still there. If the album exceeds 10 tracks, then perhaps it is a little excessive. But still, as long as they’re not releasing X & Y again, I’m happy.

Phil | 2/1/2007, 1:24 am EST

But this clip is hilarious. It was perfect parody of self important rock stars.

ljs with love... | 2/1/2007, 1:20 am EST

coldplay sucks but vinyl is awesome…what a conundrum. so does that mean putting coldplay’s songs on vinyl will make them sound better? hmm…

me of course | 2/1/2007, 12:39 am EST

if it was going on just vinyl i would say no, but in this case i think its a cool move

Christine | 2/1/2007, 12:11 am EST

Oh, okay then I apologize. I missunderstood, sorry. But I still think they should wait a little.

weed is bad | 1/31/2007, 11:39 pm EST

coldpay sucks they deserve jack shit so fuck off all coldplay fans and lay of the weed thats all there music is good for people to space out to while listening to it just like pink floyd drug junkie bands god straight edge is the way to go weed is gay just like coldplay and pink flyod

nyyfan178 | 1/31/2007, 11:33 pm EST

This is NOT a best-of collection. Would anyone consider songs like “Careful Where You Stand,” “Murder,” “Crest Of Waves,” and “Help Is Around The Corner” to be among Coldplay’s greatest? Absolutely not. Most people have probably never even heard of them. This box set is merely a collectors item - something to hold us over before the next album.

By the way, I’m a Coldplay fan, I’m 18, and I also own a record player.

cam | 1/31/2007, 11:15 pm EST

ok maybe i didnt make a mistake haha. i thought greg was criticizing me when i was saying what he was saying, but i didnt catch it that he corrected himself.

oh and bryan, coldplays b sides are actually quite amazing. they sometimes even rival the songs on the albums.

k, im done now.

cam | 1/31/2007, 11:11 pm EST

ok ill admit i made a mistake lol.

i thought christine said it is all on one cd, but she was referring to my post, which maybe was poorly worded. i meant that it would be a best of were it all on one cd. i was making the case that the coldplay collection is not on one cd, therefore it is not a best of. sorry about that mixup.

Bryan | 1/31/2007, 11:00 pm EST

All these bands are coming out with “best of” albums way too soon (cough) coldplay, atreyu. not to mention does anyone really want to listen to coldplay’s b-sides which even they thought were not good enough to make the albums in the first place? answer me that

Greg | 1/31/2007, 10:57 pm EST

i’m a retard. cam.

Greg | 1/31/2007, 10:56 pm EST

i meant christine, not cam

Greg | 1/31/2007, 10:55 pm EST

As much as I hate the idea of this collection, cam is right: it doesn’t really sound like a greatest hits album. The b-sides and the debut ep make it a collection of rarities. Its release on vinyl - though very pretentious - limits the audience to the hardcore Coldplay fans. This is not your average cut-the-fat hits CD, like U2’s recent singles album. I would compare it to the Smashing Pumpkins box set, The Aeroplane Flies High, which also compiled singles with their b-sides.

cam | 1/31/2007, 10:55 pm EST

maybe u need to read it again…its a box set where each single is on a SEPARATE vinyl. its not on one album, its a box set.

Christine | 1/31/2007, 10:14 pm EST

Um a cd with all singles on it. Maybe you don’t get it. That is a Best Of..album. Are you a dunce?

And yes I think its to late.

cam | 1/31/2007, 10:01 pm EST

i dont think you guys get it. its not a best of or a greatest hits, its just them releasing all of their singles in one set. if it were a best of, then none of the b sides would be on there nor would the blue room ep be on there. And it would all be on one disc (were it released on cd).

cheesecrop | 1/31/2007, 9:57 pm EST

I think Coldplay is jumping the gun a bit, but not because of a lack of time but a lack of material. They are a great band, but one more album might be necessary before a hits set comes out. I’d add onto what Bangers and Mash said about Creed only having three albums out by saying that in the past bands tended to record more songs in a shorter period of time. If Coldplay had been recording from 1969-1976 they would already have done at least five full albums by this point, and there would be no real argument here.

Rock Fan | 1/31/2007, 9:54 pm EST

Hello RS, Its Not A Greatests Hits… its Just A Bunch Of 7 inch Singles put into one box, a greatest hits would be all of them on one cd or one vinyl, get it right!!!

jay | 1/31/2007, 9:47 pm EST

I like Coldplay…but a “Greatest Hits” album? I think these types of albums should be reserved for bands/artists who have been around for more the 15 years. The band/artist should meet the requirement of being “antique” at least. In my opinion 7 years of “togetherness” does not qualify as having any “great hits”. Just sayin’.

Zachary A. Newman | 1/31/2007, 9:45 pm EST

hey, kaya Tribe, vinyl sounds better than anything else so go listen to your compressed mp3s and shut up.
also coldplay sucks a fat dick. they wish they were radiohead but lack the talent and all of their songs sound the same. i could cut my hands off and write better music than them. why are they famous i hope they all kill themselves real, real soon.

BohemianRevenge | 1/31/2007, 9:30 pm EST

I like Coldplay, but I don’t think they’ve thought on this one enough…

Bangers-n-mash | 1/31/2007, 8:46 pm EST

Does anyone remember when Creed released a Greatest Hits album? After having milked their last album(Weathered) for most every song on the album prior to that? They only had 3 albums. And I would go out on a limb and say that at least Coldplay is better than Creed… right?
BTW… I See this as no different than what Oasis did with ‘The Masterplan’ album, as it was issued on CD, and as a 7″ singles set. Can we also remember that Coldplay is an English band and they still believe in something called the single and EP over there, AS WELL AS vinyl?

Ryan | 1/31/2007, 8:42 pm EST

Coldplay is a great band. Sure, they may not be as groundbreaking as “Radiohead” or “The White Songs”, but I do like many of their songs. Though I do agree, they shouldnt release a greatest hits album quite yet.

Toejam Football | 1/31/2007, 8:33 pm EST

The record company will sell anything as long as fans will spend their money on it.

Will | 1/31/2007, 8:17 pm EST

Ahh it seems there are two Wills. Hi Will #1.
Ahh I am a coldplay fan without a record player. for real. so no to geratest hits without putting it on a cd.
Also, no greatest hits period. Yet. B-sides however are VERY WELCOME.
Cheers

Anonymous | 1/31/2007, 8:14 pm EST

coldplay needs to die. that’s it and nothing else.

ernesto | 1/31/2007, 8:11 pm EST

by the way coldplay rules

ernesto | 1/31/2007, 8:10 pm EST

its not a best of

twelve | 1/31/2007, 8:01 pm EST

Records are far better than cds and no they should not have a best of because there was nothing worthy enough to classify as best or even good

Anonymous | 1/31/2007, 8:00 pm EST

Not yet.

Anon | 1/31/2007, 7:54 pm EST

I am going to write a mature, well thought out post about why I don’t like Coldplay….Fuck that and fuck Coldplay. Anglo-saxon poofter rock should die, along with the people that listen to it :D .

cam | 1/31/2007, 7:48 pm EST

this isnt a best of anyway, its a singles box set. get back to reporting the right way dammit

Aaron | 1/31/2007, 7:43 pm EST

It’s not a “Best Of” like a greatest hits Cd. Its not like they are taking all of the singles from the radio and putting them all on one cd. They are taking all the singles that they released on Cds and putting them in one box set of vinyls. I don’t like the idea of vinyls, but I think that the author of this article is way off.

Will | 1/31/2007, 7:39 pm EST

I would give it one more album… if I were to imagine a possible “best of” w/b-sides track listing, it would only include:

Don’t Panic (maybe…)
Yellow
Trouble
See You Soon
In My Place
Clocks
The Scientist
God Put A Smile On Your Face
Life Is For Living (album or live track)
One I Love
Speed Of Sound
Fix You
Talk
Pour Me (live track)

14 tracks… ok, maybe it’s conceivable, ha. Either way, it would still be refreshing to hear at least three newer songs, even if they were exclusively recorded for said Best Of album.

Kaya Tribe | 1/31/2007, 7:35 pm EST

In addition, to the poster named “jon” below. “but anything anybody does to kill CD and bring back vinyl wins my vote.” first of all, VINYL is never coming back. Why? Because it sounds like ass. Cds are also on their way out but not because of VINYL’s triumphant return. Digital media is knocking everything off the map. Have fun with your record player.

Kaya Tribe | 1/31/2007, 7:31 pm EST

Who the hell listens to VINYL anymore, jeasus. This idea is only out stupefied by the idea coldplay is ready to release a greatest hits cd. garbage.

bp | 1/31/2007, 7:26 pm EST

I remember when this magazine gave Parachutes a glowing 4 star review, and hinted strongly that they might be the future of (British) rock. Now they mostly act like they think Coldplay are cheesy, because that’s the ‘hip’ thing to do now: hate on Coldplay. That, along with this magazine’s misguided efforts to be a political rag, are why I cancelled my subscription and only check the website now and then to read the messages like the one I am wasting my time posting now.

Anonymous | 1/31/2007, 7:24 pm EST

Well, the only album of theirs that I like so far is A Rush of Blood to the Head, so it all seems a little…premature.

Sounds like they’re trying to cash in on the rabid Coldplay collectors market. *chuckles*

Who do they think they are? Duran Duran?

Graham | 1/31/2007, 7:24 pm EST

Why is dated technology considered so cool? CD’s are cheaper and sound better than records, so why the hell should I buy a music format that’s as dead as my grandfather? I don’t get it.

Also, Chris Martin is lame. I can’t stand when rock stars try to act like they are in any way qualified to talk about geo-politics. Did the guy even go to college? He’s about as politically credible as Bill O’Reilly. At least Bono doesn’t try to tell people what to think, but rather uses his celebrity to promote a cause that he believes in. Chris needs to get his head out of his ass and figure out a way to make a good album again after Coldplay’s recent piece-of-shit release.

Merrr | 1/31/2007, 7:17 pm EST

Honestly, I don’t really see this new release as a “Best of…” more like a collector’s edition. And in that case, can you name 10 DVDs that don’t have a collector’s edition version these days. Maybe this move Coldplay is making isn’t “too little, too soon” but a new, innovative way to grab attention and buyers. Who can blame them with all of the leaks lately. I mean, good luck uploading that vinyl onto a sharing site.

hey rollingstone, i own a record player, and i would love to hear I.36 and I bloom baum on LP. God knows its going to be priced too much, but anything anybody does to kill CD and bring back vinyl wins my vote. I just want to point out that RS also loves Brittany Spears and Courtney Love beyond all measure, but can’t stand Coldplay or Grey’s Anatomy? A.) with that kind of taste, why are you tastemakers? I love the fact that y’all have a constantly updating blog, that’s great for music heads, but that’s where it stops, and B.) Brittany kinda sucks, and Coldplay sucks way less. At least they had more than one good song, unlike Brit’s one (toxic).

y’all are way too brown-nosed to have your feet jammed so far up your butt.

Their is no rlues when it comes to music, but why on earth would Coldplay want to put out a “Best Of” collection on vinyl. They only have three albums, and that is so rediclous if you ask me. i am all for them working with Eno, but this is a bit much. Even though this might not be a mighty massive realse, it is still not needed. Looking forward to album number 4 though!

It was either this or the remix album or maybe the extended version with 5 unreleased songs that are unreleased for a fairly good reason. They suck. How about they re-record their first 3 albums?

They are probably using this album to help meet the number of required albums in their contract.

The question is how many albums do they have left with Capitol?

I would bet this was a business decision that they had very little to do with. It’s become old hat for the labels’ to pimp these albums during bands down time.

“best of” albums always make me wonder if it’s a signal that a band is thinking about calling it quits soon. I know they have a new album in the works but it wouldn’t surprise me if it was their last. There aren’t a set of written rules on when you can release a “best of” but it seems extremely tacky to do it after only three decent albums. It’s not like these guys have made some sort of lasting impact on any genre. I agree that it’s odd that it’s only being released on vinyl but to each their own.

I think bands like radiohead and white stripes are much better than coldplay. I am glad they aren’t releasing best of’s. But I don’t think a box set full of 7″ singles count as a best of.

I say one more relatively successful album, then wait a couple of years, then Coldplay Greatest Hits!

Yabba Dabba Do!! Best of records are for knobs anyway…so who cares!

Edric | 1/31/2007, 6:22 pm EST

i’m a huge coldplay fan, and i do in fact own a record player.

I say give them a break. Its damn if you do damn if you don’t when Rolling Stone talks about Coldplay. Its almost like they can’t stand the fact that a talented band(one of the few talented bands of the current “Top 40″ rock bands in the world) has gotten so big. I remember when Rolling Stone judged music for music and bands for bands. Now they are doing something that I think is sinful. DO NOT compare bands to other bands, or judge new albums again old albums. Bands evolve, they change, they improve, they debase. Those are the things that make music intesting and that makes it great. Stop with the over analyzation of records. Stop comparing new albums to old albums. Please.

im fuckin sick of all you little “mucic” savants complaining about the authenticity, or relevancy of rolling stone…you’re here, you’re reading the bloody article…
its a question, answer it, or dont

but, i do think that its too soon…it was too soon for DMB too, forget coldplay

rube | 1/31/2007, 5:51 pm EST

the more I read articles like this the more I realize how rolling stone writers are too out of it. since when are there any rules for a band of any sort? it’s ONLY mucic.
