Playlist of the Day: We’re Rubber, Barbaro’s Glue?

1/30/07, 8:31 am EST

After eight months and untold thousands spent on surgeries and rehab (not to mention relentless media coverage of a leg injury to a horse), Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was put down yesterday. In his honor, we offer a humble tribute…

  • “Wild Horses” — The Rolling Stones
  • “Back in the Saddle” — Aerosmith
  • “Dead Horse” — Guns n’ Roses
  • “No More Running” — Al Campbell
  • “Push th’ Little Daisies” — Ween

I live in Louisville, Kentucky, where Barbaro ran (and won). I am sorry to have learned of his being put down, but, in the horse’s best interest, I think it was the humane thing to do.

Why does Rolling Stone make light of this sad story? Don’t be a horse’s ass and get back to covering music. You know, Like you did 35 years ago.

Why does every Rolling Stone writer think that being needlessly sarcastic about everything in their briefs and blogs is the cool thing to do?

Jake Burns | 1/30/2007, 12:45 pm EST

It was a horse, for gosh sake! Who really cares? Why don’t people get more concerned with….PEOPLE!!!!

Susan | 1/30/2007, 12:49 pm EST

baba oreily, that was great

Lobsters | 1/30/2007, 12:56 pm EST

Aw, he was a good horse. I like horses. They’re like dogs, only you can get some fuckin’ work out of em.

zyzzyb | 1/30/2007, 1:01 pm EST

Wow. You guys are so cool and edgy that you make light of a dying animal. I just remembered why I almost never visit your site or read your crappy magazine.

DJ Dave | 1/30/2007, 1:07 pm EST

Hahahah this is hilarious. Keep it coming!!

Anyone who hates on RS for this is a LOSER, straight up. Seriously, leave these message boards now. This is a “sad” story? A god damn HORSE dying?!? How about the marine that just returned from Iraq to find out all he’s left with is a ridiculous debt to pay off, a girlfriend that has been cheating on him for 2 years, nightmares of his comrades dying before him and the wheelchair he’s bound to for the rest of his life? Is that equally as sad? Should that be a top story too?!?

The only thing that’s “sad” about this incident is that yesterday it was top story on every single news website out there. There’s endless corruption in our government, genocide in Sudan, war in Iraq, a potential war in Iran, and the list goes on forever.

Yet the powers that be realize that more Americans will care about a dead horse than anything else important going on. This is hilarious and should be satirized to the fullest extent. I love animals as much as the next guy, but cmon, give me a f’ing break already.

Elvis | 1/30/2007, 1:09 pm EST

It is possible to care about people AND animals at the same time. Not really a stretch.

jill hives | 1/30/2007, 1:16 pm EST

all the tired horses – bob dylan(dedicated to rs & everybody else here)

chez | 1/30/2007, 1:17 pm EST

Rollingstone just isn’t funny.

Hobie Baker | 1/30/2007, 1:28 pm EST

Amen, DJ Dave! Nothing has infuriated me more in the past 24 hours than the news media obsessing over the death of an overblown FARM ANIMAL. Yes, I’m sad when my pet dies. But is that national news? No. The media tries to pass this off as something all of America is mourning, and that’s just not true. As Dave points out, yesterday more Americans (and Iraqis we don’t even bother to count, of course) died in Iraq. Human beings, dying for no reason. This morning, Barbaro was the lead story on CNN, while Senators visiting New Orleans to see the devastation first-hand because we STILL can’t be bothered to help our own damn people was story number FIVE (after Tyra Banks debating whether she’s a fatty or not, of course). But by all means, let’s get all eulogistic over a fucking horse. PRIORITIES! Bravo, RS, for poking a little bit of fun at the insanity of it all.

Dan | 1/30/2007, 1:33 pm EST

Damn DJ, how do you really feel? Of course, you are correct. In light of that (sorry, didn’t mean to make light of that):

Heavy Horses – Jethro Tull

Buster C | 1/30/2007, 1:37 pm EST

I agree with Jon, please dont be sarcastic about everything.

Shazam | 1/30/2007, 1:42 pm EST

That’s what he gets for joining The Marines :-P

lik roper | 1/30/2007, 1:45 pm EST

no one probably cares more about this horse than me, and that’s what makes me so fucking bad ass…

blinked | 1/30/2007, 2:56 pm EST

Who cares about dead horses? The little fucker was a waste of money anyways. Who gives a shit about horse-racing? No one, actually. And I think there are much more important stories out there than a dead fucking animal. For example, a corrupted war in Iraq, questions from 9/11, Bush Impeachment, and if there’s going to be another Star Wars movie, you see, important stories.

DJ Dave | 1/30/2007, 3:01 pm EST

Damn Shazam, that’s f’ed up!

Well said DJ and Hobie. I thought I was the only one who could care less about a horse and more about all the countless human beings that are mutilated and massacred on a daily basis without the slightest media coverage.

anonymous | 1/30/2007, 3:24 pm EST

Yes, why does every post on here have to be at least somewhat sarcastic? Anyway, Barbaro was an amazing horse and he deserves recognition, even if he is “just an animal”.
