Paul Weller Invades New York City

1/30/07, 12:43 pm EST

Paul Weller

Yesterday marked the beginning of what might unofficially be called Paul Weller week here in New York City. The legendary Jam and Style Council frontman (and bona fide personal hero/role model to many) began his three-day invasion of the City via an absurdly anticipated performance last night at Irving Plaza. Outside, tickets were apparently changing hands for $300-$400 and inside a collection of rowdy British expats and thuggish Jerseyites in ill-fitting leather jackets lost their collective minds as Weller played one Jam hit after another. During “That’s Entertainment” we came very close to witnessing a room full of drunk, grown men sobbing.

Tonight Weller will reportedly change the set list to focus more on Style Council material, and Wednesday he will perform rock from his entire career. That final show will most likely reflect the feel of Weller’s new album Hit Parade, which features a well-balanced sampling of the Modfather’s best material. Classic Jam anthems like “Town Called Malice” and “Going Underground” sound as magnificent and brave as ever next to the elegant, clever piano and string pop of Weller’s Style Council years. And then there’s the solo stuff. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the solo inclusions from Hit Parade sound as good as they do. Weller has long been perceived as more than the frontman for one of the most important rock bands ever (as if that weren’t enough) but also as a formidable solo artist and songwriter, and on Hit Parade he reminds us why he’s so worshiped. Tracks like “The Changing Man” and the explosive, confrontational “Come On/Let’s Go,” sound vital and prescient, like he’s a free, wise sage and we’re the lucky disciples.

as a teenager in california, i only found out about paul weller after reading interviews of noel gallagher and other ‘britpop’ musicians. after listening to his stuff it was easy to see why he’s so influential to so many groups . great songwriter, deserved resurgence. (wish i could’ve seen the show!)

Skeetch | 1/30/2007, 2:25 pm EST

On your knees, you teenage bastards. Respect must be given.

It’s one of those deals where no one in the UK has barely heard or not at all of the lokes of John Mayer, Steve Miller Band etc.

Paul Weller is almost synonomous with the late 70’s early 80’s mod rebirth (mod from the early 60’s in UK).

If this concert was not in NYC I doubt anyone would have been there.

He does influence a lot of Noel Gallagher’s sung B-Sides for Oasis.

someone here doesn’t know weller..i feel sorry for you. he’s one of the greatest alive. go listen to the jam’s ‘greatest hits’ or his new boxset ‘HIT PARADE’…it saddens me how so many music lovers are totally unaware of someone like him.

I don’t know if I’ve ever hated New York more than I do at this moment. I would’ve killed to see that show.

Lobsters | 1/30/2007, 7:12 pm EST

The joke was at the expense of Green Day fans. I was buying Jam albums when you kids were . . . God, I’m old! I’M SO FUCKING OLD!!

lilet | 1/31/2007, 11:44 pm EST

Paul Weller is the most prolific songwriter of his time. He’s a musical genius ! Lucky are the people who’ve witnessed his performances, he’s dynamite !

Lets stop the Generation bashing. Like Townsend passed the torch to Weller so does Weller pass it on… By the way the Tuesday night show was a Religious experience.

Lou | 2/1/2007, 3:48 am EST

Paul Weller is a legend! Long live the Modfather!

jamie | 2/1/2007, 5:27 am EST

Paul Weller is a legend,, The Jam were one of the most important influential bands, the style council pushed musical boundaries,, and his solo work has been prolific and amazing. Most importantly he has written some of the greatest songs of the last 30 years. And great clothes too,,,,

anon | 2/1/2007, 8:52 am EST

paul weller is one of the most influential british songwriters ever.
putting it in a different light. Paul Weller split up his punk band The Jam after massive success when he was 22 years old. most of us at 22 are still trying to figure out what the hell we want to do with our lives.
listen to ‘this is the modern world’ or ‘in the city’ every band in some way has Paul Weller to thank for his music.

mrs.weller | 2/1/2007, 10:50 am EST

Tuesday night’s show was f*&^% brilliant! I’ve been a major fan since the Jam days. Even my four year old loves Weller! The modern day so called “alterna” bands would be nothing without him.

Jimmy | 2/1/2007, 12:07 pm EST

I’m just amazed that Rolling Stone actually have printed this, they usually totally ignore him,, eg no review of his brilliant last album as is now.

This man is an total legend,, and one of the all time great songwriters!!

lilet | 2/2/2007, 12:28 am EST

will someone write a review of the Tuesday show !!! We’ll be watching the LA gig and we’ve missed the thematic nights in NY. He was amazing at Late Night w/ Conan, don’t you all think ?

Theresa | 2/2/2007, 8:14 pm EST

“rowdy british ex-pats”. You obviously don’t know what you are talking about. Most of the concert goers had flown in from Britian especially to see Mr. Weller perform old Jam hits that they hadn’t heard live for nigh on 25 years. Yes, there were alot of ex-pats present (including myself), I personally did not meet any thuggish guys from NJ with bad fitting leather jackets.
I’m sure if you had asked around you may have been surprised to find hundreds of professional people present. I know at least one judge, several lawyers, a few doctors, including surgeons, stock brokers/traders, nurses, detectives, a couple of top chefs, several well known musicians, and a couple of designers in attendance. If you think that concert was rowdy, it must be your first Weller gig!
Tickets for mondays concert were going for approximately $750 – $1000.
Mr Weller did not play Jam songs alnight, I believe it was 8 songs, the rest were from the other 25 years. It was a great show. I feel that it was misrepresented by his record company. The show was advertised as Jam night – it wasn’t, less than half of the show was Jam. Luckily, because Paul Weller is such a musical genious, none of us minded.
Did you understand the words of “That’s Entertainment”? If you had grown up when, and where, most of us Brits had – maybe it would be your lifes theme tune too. Not a good write up on your part, and no wonder Weller doesn’t get more space in Rolling stone – if it’s this sort of stuff that we’d have to read.

okay | 2/3/2007, 9:24 am EST

hmmm. boys and girls. the first two days were horrible. you ask why? because they announced something that didn’t happen: a few jam songs here and few style council songs there. sorry, but even if the record company did something wrong with the ads someone had to communicate that false promise in advance. c’mon i love paul weller but flying couple of hours just to get a set with a few more the jam songs than usual is not a good deal.

Bimmer | 2/3/2007, 9:41 am EST

The TSC show was what I expected, some new, old ones and gold ones.
The legend on stage had his higher octane energy rolling out the tunes one after the other.
It took Paul an hour+ before he slowed the tempo.

Tickets were available at the theatre day of (promoters/press layaways not taken)

Missed catching names of the cute girl(s) by my side in the crowd Tuesday eve – Music was too good!

g fae rothesay | 2/4/2007, 1:36 pm EST

Can anyone tell me the name of the next to last tune Paul played at the last NYC show (Wed nite)…It was f–kin a rockin tune and it sounded like a cover tune, but not sure. It was in the encore just before he closed the show with Malice. Would appreciate it.

monday show was just fantastic, travelled from uk and worth every penny!!! paul still rules

HB MOD | 2/9/2007, 5:26 pm EST

The 2nd to last song on Monday night was Sunflower. It’s from Wild Wood, Paul’s 2nd solo album. And yes, it was a great show. He didn’t just play “a few extra jam tunes”. The first 40 minutes were all Jam, with more sprinlkled in later. BTW the LA shows were great as well!!!
