Lunchtime Poll: Tammy Wynette Is On Call

1/30/07, 12:02 pm EST

Tammy Wynette

Don’t ask us why, but earlier today we couldn’t stop singing the Hold Steady’s “Your Little Hoodrat Friend,” as if it were a classic country song. And you know what? It sounded really good. And we can’t even sing. So we got to thinking about other quintessential indie rock songs that might be stealth country hits. Here’s the situation: The First Lady of Country, Tammy Wynette, is back from the dead, ready to apply her rhinestone-encrusted magic to whatever obscure college rock tune she’s assigned. What do you have her sing and how does it sound?

how about bright eyes new single, “tourist trap”? or pretty much any bright eyes song…

cold criminals – pink mountain tops

“I Wanna Be Sedated” Ramones

Well, forget Tammy Wynette, but I’d love to hear Alison Krauss and Union Station do “Borderline” by Madonna.

Indie, though…

lets say… “The Letter” by PJ Harvey (for Loretta Lynn)

“Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground” by the White Stripes

Ouroboros | 1/30/2007, 12:47 pm EST

It’s not indie, but it would be interesting to hear her sing The Killers’ “Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll”.

Adam | 1/30/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Range Life by Pavement…and it sounds perfect

Ouroboros | 1/30/2007, 12:49 pm EST

… or maybe the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Maps”.

Jim | 1/30/2007, 12:51 pm EST

“Lost Cause” Beck

Lobsters | 1/30/2007, 12:51 pm EST

Hey, I go around singing “Your Little Hoodrat Friend”, too! Guess I’ll have to take a break from putting you down for a couple of days.

donhenleysnewleatherhandbag | 1/30/2007, 1:28 pm EST

anything my bright eyes, obviously

Jim | 1/30/2007, 1:49 pm EST

I’d pay money to hear Tammy cover the Smashing Pumpkins. The curtain goes up, she walks out in a sequined gown, hair is perfect, and purrs…”The world is a vampire…”

Joe | 1/30/2007, 1:49 pm EST

“Justified and Ancient”–The KLF

Lithium – Nirvana

Ouroboros | 1/30/2007, 2:22 pm EST

Joe, she actually sang that one.

How about “Staring at the Sun” by TV on the Radio…that would be pretty entertaining / confusing, for the audience and Tammy. I bet it would start to sound like an eerie gospel tune. I think I might have nightmares because of all this thinking about it.

Hulka | 1/30/2007, 3:31 pm EST

“More Adventurous” by Rilo Kiley, which practically already is a Tammy Wynette song.

“your mom”: Chris Thile from Nickel Creek has recorded a bluegrass version of “Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground.” I think there’s also a bluegrass White Stripes tribute album out there.

Moniker A | 1/30/2007, 3:43 pm EST

“Gone For Good” The Shins

The Norsemen | 1/30/2007, 4:05 pm EST

I’d say “I am Trying to Break your Heart” by Wilco.

jill hives | 1/30/2007, 5:14 pm EST

this is a hard question to me. i’d like to hear someone try a c/w take on “ever fallen in love” by buzzcocks – if only it mentioned alcohol somewhere it might pass for a hank williams lyric on paper, such is peter shelley’s lovelorn heart.

Joe | 1/30/2007, 5:30 pm EST

That was a joke, Ouroboros. I know, not funny.

Dare To Hear A Fool | 1/31/2007, 11:05 am EST

some of you don’t know what indie is… anyway, while it’s not indie, i’d go with Joe’s comment, that’d be great.

Dare To Hear A Fool | 1/31/2007, 11:06 am EST

oops, i meant Jim, not joe; the one about the pumpkins
