Brian Eno Takes On Coldplay, B.B. King Had The Flu, The Shins Keep Us Up All Night

1/29/07, 9:00 am EST

brian eno

  • Brian Eno has apparently been busy turning Coldplay into a less mass-market, weirder, cooler band. The mad scientists of rock has revealed he’s been working on Coldplay’s new album, and calls the band’s new material “very original and very different from what they’ve done before.”
  • Whew. The culprit behind B.B. King’s recent hospitalization was the flu, not something more serious. The much-worshiped 81-year-old bluesman was released from the hospital in Galveston, Texas on Saturday after being treated for a high, flu-related fever. Lots of fluids, Mr. King.
  • Modest Marr’s first album will be titled We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank and will be released March 20th. This will be Modest Mouse’s 753rd (5th, actually) album, but their first with eternally cool Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr.
  • Last week’s release of the Shins’ Wincing the Night Away brought many record stores back to the heady days of midnight releases. In spite of the fact that the album leaked online waaaay before its release date, the fans were clamoring for the old-school, stay-up-all-Monday-night-listening-to-it experience. As a result, many indie record stores are considering re-implementing the midnight release practice. Nice.
  • Apparently Arcade Fire’s new album Neon Bible has leaked. Let the first round of backlash begin.

One of these days a band will figure out how to leak a fake album….

whutt!! | 1/29/2007, 10:39 am EST

who gives a flying fuiuuuuuuuu(*^@#^$ if albums leak. It has to be done on purpose by the band. Publicity STUNT. In short: fuck you, record industry, who have shrunk 20% in 6 years, killing off real talent and driving sales down with the crap that gets put out.

There’s this little storefront off the Main and St. Denis, go inside and there are wonderful pinball games from the mid 70’s; in the corner is a gorgeous fire place where musicians gather. Could it be this is where the idea for the name came from? Je me souviens, mai oui mon amis, mai oui

Joe | 1/29/2007, 11:08 am EST

It’s already happened, jungleland.

In 2003, Madonna’s people leaked a fake version of her “American Life” album onto file sharing sites hoping to do an end run around any possible album leak. The “tracks” were simply a recording of Madge saying “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” followed by silence.

It didn’t work. An angry file-sharer crashed her website soon after, defacing it with a response: “This is what the fuck I think I’m doing” and posting the actual “American Life” album along with various Madge remixes. It took Madonna, Inc. fifteen hours to salvage the website and remove the actual album unexpectedly leaked through their own homepage.

Donald | 1/29/2007, 11:17 am EST

Didn’t Madonna already figure out how to leak a fake album?

I remember people downloading one of her latter-day albums, only to hear her preach about the violations of downloading.

I really dig Coldplay’s music, including X&Y, but it definitely leaned toward facelessness. I hope Eno can get creative juices flowing.

blueshades | 1/29/2007, 11:24 am EST

Wow. Is it just me or is Coldplay trying really hard to be U2?

Venezuelan Born | 1/29/2007, 11:41 am EST

It’s official: ColdPlay will now change its name to:

Poorman’s U2.

(Semi-good uplifting music, without the star power of Bono and Edge).

Hey Mr. Paltrow, you will never be as good as the lads from Ireland, try getting your own sound.

Kev | 1/29/2007, 11:51 am EST

I like Coldplay but X&Y wasn’t taht spectacular compared to the first 2. I thought Oasis’s ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ was a much better record. People that like Coldplay should really check out the band Travis (especially the albums ‘Good Feeling’ & ‘The Man Who’)

ljs with love... | 1/29/2007, 12:08 pm EST

mad scientist of rock, not mad scientists–unless i missed the “how to: plurals” day in 5th grade. c’mon liz, i’m pulling for you but… and oh yeah, coldplay sucks.

Brian | 1/29/2007, 12:09 pm EST

I am interested to see what Eno can do with Coldplay. I think musically X&Y was a decent album, but the lyrics were just dreadful. then I would like to see them go in a more creative direction.

Someone was right when they said “Don’t Believe The Truth” was a better album. If what Noel said a couple weeks ago is true, I am really anticipating the new Oasis album

Patrick Cotter | 1/29/2007, 12:17 pm EST

In exactly what universe is it even remotely important what Coldplay do, when one of the greatest axe-men ever and certainly the greatest finger picker of the last 25 years, has made an album with the Mighty Modest Mouse

kyle | 1/29/2007, 12:53 pm EST

just listened to bloc party’s a weekend in the city, amazing!!!! it will be the album of the year!!!!!!!!!!!

Ben Fong-Torres | 1/29/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Coldplay – The sterile offspring of a U2 and an REM.

Brock Landers | 1/29/2007, 1:54 pm EST

I think it’s great that Eno is working with Coldplay on new mateial. I like the fact that they going for a less mass market and different sound. Also, stoked on the new Modest Mouse album. But is it just me or do people always come and go in modest Mouse? I think their is only 2 original members of the band but don’t quote me on that.

J | 1/29/2007, 2:00 pm EST

This is the best thing Coldplay could have done.

Jon B. | 1/29/2007, 2:29 pm EST

I am a huge huge huge Eno fan.
I really hate Coldplay, primarily because they bore and play it safe on every mother fucking song.
But regardless, I will buy the album.
Because of Eno.
So basically, theyre trying to steal the money/time of Eno fans who don’t give a fuck about them.
Whatever. I’m about the music. Coldplay is not.

playin' cold | 1/29/2007, 3:02 pm EST

It’s not the 1st time Eno has worked with Coldplay.. read the linernotes from X&Y… after hearing what Eno did with Paul Simons ’surprise”, i’ll bet the next Coldplay is thier best yet.

bowieno | 1/29/2007, 4:46 pm EST

I wish Eno would spend his time better. Coldplay are a big Yawn.

Everbody needs a check i guess

hope they prove me wrong, but…

tom wieler | 1/29/2007, 6:02 pm EST

i think the best way to improve coldplay’s sound would be to remove all of the members of the band and start over. so what…Brian Eno’s going to discover new ways to rip off radiohead?

CurtMayfield | 1/29/2007, 6:57 pm EST

Sounds like Enos on a roll, maybe when hes done working whith other artists he’ll give us another solo.

hello! my name is. . . | 1/29/2007, 7:24 pm EST

I think Coldplay is stealing their sound from U2 and I feel it is starting to become apparent.
They should just stop while they’re..umm ahead or where ever they are at the current moment.
Its bands like Coldplay and Panic! At The Disco that degrades music from what it was.

Brad | 1/29/2007, 7:49 pm EST

I’m sad for Coldplay that its been all downhill since the first two songs on their first CD. Shit, its been all downhill since the first song on their first cd. does anything even come close to don’t panic? I defended coldplay until X & Y which really was not a good cd on any level. All that talk about being better than the beatles by chris martin? Insert foot in mouth, bitch.

Rachel | 1/29/2007, 8:12 pm EST

Hey! lay off of coldplay for a little. They are on of the better bands in the industry right now and they are still young in the market. Who ever says that you CANT get influenced by U2? Listen to x and y, then listen to atomic bomb. Lots of difference there. They are still learning their sound. Remember U2 and that dance rock era in the 9o’s? blah!

lehcar | 1/29/2007, 8:22 pm EST

Hopefully, we will hear some new fresh stuff from chris and the boys. I think the only thing thats letting coldplay get by is chris’s vocals. They need to step it up a notch on the guitar chords and especially the lyrics. They need to get some more grammys in their pocket! by the way, panic at the disco sucks. they are just like fall out boy, out to make super uber awesome music videos and forget about the music part.

ernesto | 1/29/2007, 8:40 pm EST

coldplay have a huge influence in music today even more than u2 every band now sounds like coldplay can’t wait for the new album

Lobsters | 1/29/2007, 10:03 pm EST

Eno is going to turn Coldplay into “a less mass market” band? Like those two Underground bands U2 and Talking Heads? What a Hipster!

Christine | 1/29/2007, 10:16 pm EST

U2 in the 90’s hmmm how about they were different?
Trying something new and daring.
Yeah shoot them.

Leslie | 1/30/2007, 11:58 am EST

Modest Mouse (meh) + Johnny Marr (ohmygodilovehim) = me having a minor heart attack.

Wonderful wonderful news.

ed | 1/31/2007, 11:44 pm EST

Coldplay is an amazing band, (#3 on my list behind Radiohead and The White Stripes) though X&Y was a good album, it did sound overproduced. I can’t wait to hear what impact Eno is gonna have on their sound.

Dragging Brian Eno into the (how can we be unique) quest for fame and of course fortune. What’s next George Martin!….Oh…Already done with Duran,Duran

school of rock | 2/9/2008, 3:43 am EST

Trying too hard to be U2 is better than trying too hard to be Radiohead I guess. Stadium rock whore is a much better option for Coldplay.
