Bob Seger Stops By for Sandwiches, Life Lessons

1/26/07, 4:06 pm EST

Bob Seger

Legendary rocker and bona fide American icon Bob Seger stopped by earlier today for lunch. Over turkey sandwiches and pasta salad, Seger, who is in New York City on tour in support of his new album Face the Promise (his first since 1995’s It’s a Mystery) discussed everything from the hard times that characterized his early career, to the thrill of playing before huge crowds again. He also sat down with RollingStone.com for an exclusive one-on-one interview. We’ll have that video for you early next week, but in the meantime, check out our favorite quotes from today’s lunch.

  • On the thrill of being back on the road after a ten-year-plus absence: “We’re a sports team, we’re in season and every night we win.”
  • On the girl who inspired “Night Moves”: “She knows who she is. She was my first love.”
  • On the lean early years of his career, which were characterized by insane amounts of touring: “We called ourselves truck drivers moonlighting as musicians.”
  • On how he comes to the decision to release a new album: “When I have twelve great songs…or when they set a release date and I can’t change it.”
  • On how his family encouraged him to get back on the road: “The family wanted to tour. They wanted to see dad onstage — you know you’re supposed to be famous. Now they want to come out every night.”
  • On some of his favorite moments onstage: “‘Hollywood Nights’ becomes really wild, but at my age, sixty percent of the time I’m just trying to remember the lyrics.”

I saw the opening night of his tour in GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN-he was great. You could see his was a little nervous initially but it was a good show. He played 7 songs off his new lp ‘FACE THE PROMISE’ which a lot of people were moaning about-but you get your share of wannabe fans at these arena shows.

joe | 1/26/2007, 4:49 pm EST

I’m guessing this one was a “they set a release date and I can’t change it” album (see Kid Rock cameo).

Whalespoon | 1/27/2007, 9:57 am EST

Bob Seger is one of the most underrated singers/songwriters of the last 30 years and a solid performer. I am glad he is out on the road again and getting some of his due. If he comes close on tour, I’ll be there.

Brenda | 1/27/2007, 10:53 am EST

I first saw Bob Seger in 1976, at Martin Dragway in Martin, Michigan. He was unbelievable then. I saw him in Grand Rapids, MI Nov8(opening night) and Nov.12. I’ll tell you what, He is still unbelievable!! When he sang “Turn the Page”, You could hardly hear him because the whole arena was singing along. The energy At the Van Andel was explosive both nights and you could see that Bob Seger felt it too. Thanks Bob

Barrelhousin' | 1/27/2007, 11:37 am EST

I was at his Cleveland show, and I swear, it was the loudest concert I have ever been to.

Bob Seger is the man, and if you disagree, I will fight you.

Dave Dykhouse | 1/27/2007, 11:39 am EST

I inspired “You’re so Vain”

Lando | 1/27/2007, 3:30 pm EST

I also inspired Billy Joel’s “We didn’t start the fire”, coincidentally.

Toast f-er | 1/27/2007, 4:15 pm EST

I saw Seger at a Dead show in ‘89. I think he was on mescaline…

RJ | 1/27/2007, 7:08 pm EST

Ihave seen Seger many times, and I don’t care what any one says. He is living proof that you only get better the older you get. His style of music is untouchable!

Shaman | 1/28/2007, 12:27 am EST

Bob Seger could kick Jay-Z’s ass. Seriously. And he could probably put up a good fight against every member of Panic! At the Disco.

K | 1/28/2007, 6:12 am EST

turn the page is great!
i first heard him on metallica s garage.
the i heard the original one!
he s good.

howard | 1/28/2007, 9:12 am EST

Katmandu was origianally called catmanpoo

jungleland | 1/28/2007, 9:57 am EST

I saw Bob in 1986 and he did a fantastic show of all HUGE hits. He still could have played another 2 1/2 hours of hits afterward. He has so many great songs and they sound even better live. Sadly there is no classic rock station in Atlanta anymore 96 rick (rip)…The River plays about 25 songs a week and they are classic rock lite,so touring may be the best way to reach a generation that does not know about him.

bob g | 1/28/2007, 11:21 am EST

i was at the boston show last night.it was great.keep on rockin bob.

Samper & Mariah | 1/28/2007, 12:41 pm EST

I saw Rockin’ Robert in Deetroit on 12/28. There is NOTHING like a hometown crowd for that boy! We ALL rocked the house down and Bob must have felt euphoric to hear us back up singers doing such a great job! It must be really rewarding to have 17,000 fans, night after night, singing every note of your music. And we did so with VOLUME, POWER AND HEART. It just doesn’t get any better than Bob in Detroit.

ken vail jr. | 1/28/2007, 1:25 pm EST

glad to see such a positive blog here…respect to bob y’all.

Max Buzz | 1/28/2007, 3:00 pm EST

Never could understand the lasting appeal of Bob Seger, or why he was so popular in the first place. Can’t imagine a worse nightmare than a Bob Seger concert at this point…or am I thinking of Tom Petty?

jim | 1/28/2007, 4:27 pm EST

i saw the toronto show and was totally impressed with bob and the whole band.it was an experience that we will never forgetTHANKYOU VERY MUCH

BabaO'Really? | 1/28/2007, 4:47 pm EST

the thing that bounces my dried out old heart like a meatball at a tired dog, is that a LOT of American Seger Fans, and I know a wacky gal who named her son SEGER, ok..Hi,Patti…well they know BOB but not early Bob…other than that dose of FM Adrenaline “RamblinGamblinMan”…cause I was born lonely- down by the riverside”..if you buy BOB’s greatest hits at WallyWorld, Y’ALL, (wazzat?) you will not hear “2 + 2 = ?”…the hottest anti-war song of it’s era. Is he rockin that one guys? C’mon Bob, we know you are a great example of a really really nice guy who stuck to his guns and reap-city, folks.
Now the time has come for “2 + 2 (is on my mind)…peace.

Kaya Tribe | 1/28/2007, 5:01 pm EST

How can anyone deny Bob Seger’s music? Hes a great songwriter, with actual substance to his music. Keep rockin man.

segerrocks | 1/29/2007, 12:28 am EST

Saw Segerin 86 Like a rock tour
He was fantastic then and remains the same. He sold out the Q/Cleveland,Oh and me and the house was rocking. He is still the same Seger I saw in 86 and can’t wait to see himagain in C-bus 3/10/07. I am putting my dancing shoes on cause I am giong to rock again with that fantastic man. As he said on CBS Sunday Morning today ” I have always told the truth.” You hear it in every song he sings. I DIDN’T inspire him, “HE ALWAYS, INSPIRES ME.”

Peter H. (Tempe, Az) | 1/29/2007, 2:47 am EST

Bob Seger speaks to the midwestern soul that is in all of us. Thank goodness for artists like him that enrich our lives with such great music and lyrics. And from all reports, he is not bad as a human being either.

20 years?…where’d they go? i woke last night to the sound of thunder…..how far off i sat and wonder…started humming a song from 1972….aint it funny how the night moves?

it is an inspiration to see him touring again. i remember when his songs first came out while we sat in front of white lines…up all night….we had the fire down below…..

mike taylor | 2/9/2007, 12:40 am EST

bob seger is one of our greatest song writers he tells it how it is and his songs touch our very souls the younger generation could learn a lot from him

Noah Punch | 2/11/2007, 4:19 pm EST

Seger is not giving his all in concerts. I heard he’s shortening his songs.Maybe the ole fart needs to stop smoking and take some Geritol.Time to retire old man!!!

Noah Punch | 2/12/2007, 6:13 pm EST

Kathy | 3/14/2007, 1:25 pm EST

Went to see him in Omaha, it was awsome!I hope that he has a video come out

meglovesrs | 3/27/2007, 7:10 pm EST

Night Moves is amazing. It reminds me a lot of Don Hennley.

JoyfulC | 3/30/2007, 9:00 pm EST

I grew up in the A2/Ypsi/Detroit area, and to me, Bob Seger was just a standard offering of local clubs. It was only when I moved to Canada and married a Canadian that I began to realize how revered the musician/poet we’d taken for granted was. To this day, Bob Seger tunes are a part of our household.
