YouTube Phenom Mia Rose Has Her Thorns?

1/25/07, 5:07 pm EST

In the last few weeks, vlogs from Mia Rose, a disturbingly well-packaged 18-year-old singer-songwriter, have become some of the most-viewed videos on YouTube. Rose is a well-scrubbed but coy girl-next-door with decent guitar skills, a welcome-to-Hollywood worthy voice and a knack for bearing her midriff without seeming trashy (harder than it looks). She has posted a series of her own original tunes (the particularly cheesy “Husband to Be” is a fan favorite) plus karaoke-style covers on her YouTube channel and has quickly risen to the forefront of the next Lonelygirl15 list. Except Mia Rose might not be a fake.

As her popularity has soared, the expected collection of haters has appeared. Appropriately named YouTuber Lazy Dork wrote a reasonably clever satirical song (with the charming refrain “Shut the fuck up, Mia Rose” sung to the tune of Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”) that mocks Rose for being prepackaged and produced. And in this clip another YouTuber takes us through the various dummy accounts Rose (and presumably her handlers) may be using to boost her YouTube numbers. Meanwhile, Rose isn’t helping matters by recording self-satisfied vlogs about how she doesn’t have enough time for her many fans now that she’s traipsing around the world meeting with record-label reps.

Obviously this girl is manipulating the YouTube system for her own gain, but is there anything wrong with that? Has she violated some sort of social contract with the viewers? And what do you think of the tunes?

she doesn’t sound british…

Corey | 1/25/2007, 6:03 pm EST

She’s supposed to be British?? I thought she had a little country twang sometimes.

She sounds good, but she’s nothing new…

Kyle | 1/25/2007, 6:05 pm EST

She’s enough to make a record company some dough.

Hunter | 1/25/2007, 6:06 pm EST

The music industry is struggling with album sales… Its girls like Mia that explain why.

We don’t need to hear anymore girls like her, we’ve heard her sound a thousand times before – literally, it’s boring.

And Rolling Stone, you’re so retarded. Whenever I post ONE message it says I’m allowed to post only one message every 15 seconds & to “slow down cowboy” even when I didn’t post anything before.

Steve | 1/25/2007, 6:10 pm EST

I’d like to corrupt her.

rockstarsbaby678 | 1/25/2007, 6:20 pm EST

yeah she doesn’t sound across the pond. The guitar could be worse and at least she can hold a note. but she’s gonna be another Cheyenne Kimball. and it’s youtube, anyone can be on it. good though.

Devinoch | 1/25/2007, 6:26 pm EST

I am bored and unimpressed. We’ve had a bunch of this kind of music over the last five years. Give me something new.

wereallgonnadie | 1/25/2007, 6:36 pm EST

can’t sing, can’t write, plays guitar like her left hands webbed… yup. She’s gonna be a star…
pray for the truth and hope to achieve hyperbole…
*sigh*

!? | 1/25/2007, 8:02 pm EST

?! sadly this is the kind of person that could be the next big pop star…so sad

Bangers-n-mash | 1/25/2007, 8:11 pm EST

I’ve honestly heard better at the Coffee House I frequent. But maybe the record industry would pick up on her, so long as she’s willing to be in the sequal to High School Musical. I’m sure they’d love to package her the same way they have with mediocracy like this within the past decade.

Anonymous | 1/25/2007, 8:12 pm EST

no elizabeth, you haven’t violated any social contract with your viewers, you just piss me off sometimes, that’s all…

cheesecrop | 1/25/2007, 8:17 pm EST

Welcome to the future – by the end of the decade you’ll have a pile of bands pulling the same act as what we’ve got here.

likroper.com | 1/25/2007, 8:25 pm EST

nice voice, nice guitar playing, nice key changes, nice tits, nice girl – she seems genuine to me…the test of a truly good song is a cheap tape recorder, with little production or FX applied…

Anonymous | 1/25/2007, 8:33 pm EST

great voice, pretty good guitar playin, keep it up

jonmarck | 1/25/2007, 9:39 pm EST

there’s so much more to the music industry than…well…music. It’s the American Idol attitude of the public that latches onto these singers, turning them into celebrities way before they’re ready. Hitting it big is the worst thing that can happen to this girl.

the maninabluehouse | 1/25/2007, 10:56 pm EST

nothing special that record company couldn’t produce

the maninabluehouse | 1/25/2007, 10:59 pm EST

how could she do all that travelling and promoting when she is supposed to be this person that is a “rise to stardom” and have all the money.she must be daddy’s little girl!

david | 1/25/2007, 11:30 pm EST

shes a FAKE and we should all not listen to her .i don’t like being deceived and neither should anyone of you

david | 1/25/2007, 11:34 pm EST

shes a FAKE

Dave | 1/25/2007, 11:54 pm EST

Smart marketing. Some label will scoop her up. Teens will buy it after being sold on the foe-grass-roots growth, which of course will land her a guest spot on Oprah. Same old song and dance, but new spin. $$$ Cha-ching. Very smart. But hey were not talking about indie-style real art here are we?

The Grubby 1 | 1/26/2007, 12:01 am EST

Nothing special here. I should video all the others girl I know who have the exact same shtick. All 40303409309 of them. Only problem is they’re not as cute and innocent. Oh well, no record deal for them I suppose.

I seriously doubt she lives in England. She barely has the English accent. I think it is okay to self-promote yourself, but when you lie to your “fans” then that’s the real problem. If you read the terms of use of YouTube, you will see that her PR firms do violate the rule of using automative system (well that is if they really use a refresher to increase views and if a refresher counts as an automated system). “C. You agree not to use or launch any automated system, including without limitation, “robots,” “spiders,” “offline readers,”…”

MiaRose is a good singer, and with some good practice she can make it far on her own and with good people on her side.

none | 1/26/2007, 2:22 am EST

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…..

AIDSmonkey88 | 1/26/2007, 2:27 am EST

Shes overrated, her songs suck and her cheating pissed off a lot of people.

Ted | 1/26/2007, 4:07 am EST

I’m lost. “She may not be a fake” Elizabeth? What does that mean when it’s at home? Her singing is real, true. (It’s unexceptional and bland but it’s real.) Her popularity on the other hand is as fake as a Hollywood smile. The gushing comments are fake. The subscribers are fake. YouTube is a community of real vloggers are this kind of stunt infuriates them. It’s a huge miscalculation on the part of her managers. As far as YouTubers are concerned she’s about as real (and popular) as a post-busted Milli Vanilli.

Caldodd | 1/26/2007, 4:27 am EST

The cheats always get found out, so enjoy your 5mins of fame.

Travis | 1/26/2007, 4:28 am EST

She’s definitely not British, but might live in England.

I think it’s all a bit too polished and sudden for record contract talk to already be flying around, so when the story breaks of where exactly she lives we’ll find out more. Cause there has to be a local following before a record label would even think of signing.

BettyBedlam | 1/26/2007, 4:47 am EST

Elizabeth Goodman put down the crackpipe. Of course, MiaaRose is fake. Anyone with half a brain cell knows this. Are pr firms wrong for creating people like MiaaRose? Nope, we’ve seen millions of created “artists” boy/girl bands/singers (NKOTB,NSync, Spears etc) so it’s no different. The difference with new social media celebs is that corporations are cloaking themselves as the little guy next store/indy artist (again nothing new here). The reality is that MiaaRose is one of thousands of created personas on the net using the appeal of “diy” ethic–it’s the old guerilla marketing tactic from the 90’s for those of you who don’t know see the Blair Witch Project hysteria or pick any mainstream hip hop act that uses street creditials to appeal to the non-streetwise. It’s just a sales tactic. No there’s nothing wrong with this. However, we aren’t talking about the little guy promoting himself. We talking about corporations being dishonest. Just tell us up front this is a sponsored net celebrity.Okay. What is the harm in being honest? Even the “lonelygirl” team had to admit their tactic eventually. We aren’t as stupid as you might think.

Where’s Kurt Loder when you need him?

PARocks.com | 1/26/2007, 6:45 am EST

Well, I think she’s great. I’ve done official band websites for teenage female singers who have gone on to get signed to majors.

I’ll leave aside her singing, her guitar playing, her beauty. She’s likeable/loveable, and comes across extremely well on camera. If she’s acting, she’s extrememly good at it. She does seem sincere when she explains how sorry she is that she can’t answer everyones email.

About fake or not, it’s a good storyline. There might not have been a full story there without
you heidilow (at least not the lead story on the main page of rollingstone.com on her 19th birthday). So, they can thank you.

Here’s a question for you – if it was all “fake” and there is no real support for Mia, it it was that easy, wouldn’t the majors be doing it? Most video views this month #1 – Mia Rose #2 – My Chemical Romance. So, MyChem is doing fantastic, but not as well as Mia Rose. Where are the other major label acts? Is there some sort of mystical force keeping you tube adders out of the hands of major labels?

Majors should be embarrassed by being beaten so convincingly by an unsigned artist.

There are a lot of bands (I can think of 2 baby nationals who are currently working records) that
could benefit from the level of buzz that Mia’s getting.

Truth is, i think that Mia has the “Most Viewed Musicians (This Month)” Channel with 4.4 Million video views because she’s good. I found her on youtube on Jan 6, and I got goosebumps. I didn’t think “is this real, or is this packaged?” I did get goosebumps. That, I believe, is a subconscious response. It was immediately, viscerally compelling. Mia Rose is compelling.

She is one big LIE! She has lied so much and deceived so many that she should hang her head in shame, she has been deleted from LiveVideo.com and hopefully YouTube follows suite but I doubt that because they are always for sale…

Sarah | 1/26/2007, 7:29 am EST

am beginning to believe heidlow

Nick | 1/26/2007, 7:30 am EST

Wow….You can obviously tell shes gonna be great if shes already stirring up this much controversy!! I happen to be a big fan of Mia. I think thes beautiful, beautiful voice, beautiful personality. If she is faking it then she is one of the best actors I’ve ever seen and deserves an acting career anyways. I also pity those who are discouraging her and think shes “cheating” and doesnt have any talent. Thats clearly not true. And it wouldnt kill anyone to learn a few facts about her before they comment on her. For example where she lives, parents are from, and why her accent is the way it is. Or would that be to much to ask of you “critics?” P.S. I love her accent, whatever it is!!

RLHUNTER | 1/26/2007, 7:52 am EST

Mia ROCKS!!!!

RLHUNTER | 1/26/2007, 7:54 am EST

Mia is the best thing on YouTube and that just kills some Tubers!

Doug | 1/26/2007, 8:21 am EST

Wow. Feels like Mia’s PR people have followed the developing story and are engaged in a damage limitation exercise here. Her songs are forgettable, her singing wouldn’t get her through the first round auditions of Pop Idol/America Idol.

“Majors should be embarrassed by being beaten so convincingly by an unsigned artist.” This is the point at which you realize the PR people are at work. Mia hasn’t ‘beaten’ anybody and anyone with a grasp of the extent of the fake subscribers, fake comments, automated refresher software to inflate the number of views etc., etc. understands this.

If Mia was a rare talent and a ravishing beauty, why would she need to have her management company manipulate YouTube’s viewing and subscriber figures? Wouldn’t her talent simply create a fan base naturally?

Here’s an even crazier notion. How about Mia gigging locally, sending in demos to record labels. It’s slower but a lot more likely to establish credibility.

Her managers have set her up for the biggest of falls. She’s attracted anger on YouTube not seen since the ‘reveal’ of that other marketing confection, LonelyGirl15. She’s (or more correctly, her marketing team) been banned from LiveVideo.

Way to go guys. You’ll have her flipping burgers by Christmas.

llod206 | 1/26/2007, 8:26 am EST

In 1945, a young girl named Mia Rose came over to America on a flying red carpet from Africa. A mysterious PR Firm killed her career by cheating on youtube. The YouTube community completely owned this PR Firm and spray painted the words “RRRRRRR!” and “Durrr” everywhere this firm went in the digital world. Now that you have read this message, Mia Rose will come to your house on a full moon and steal your soul unless you follow these directions:
1. Retype this as a comment to 3 other videos

Tim | 1/26/2007, 8:58 am EST

I’m down with those of the opinion that her handlers did her a disservice with the overkill. Tera Naomi was seen by millions on YT just with straight up vids.
It works if you let it. Unfortunately, Mia’s promoters got into her pocket as well as her head and had to justify their existence. They probably conned her into believing it was a ‘partnership’.

Love cup | 1/26/2007, 9:04 am EST

She is the talent they need for American Idol. Honest, upfront, and a great voice with writing skills. Hopefully she gets the break she deserves.

jungleland | 1/26/2007, 9:11 am EST

Good for her and for her “handlers” for using You Tube to build an audience. Isn’t that what You Tube is for?

wereallgonnadie | 1/26/2007, 9:33 am EST

I’m starting to wonder if Mia Rose is actually Elizabeth Goodman? Hmmm.

Antiklaus | 1/26/2007, 9:53 am EST

I helped expose her – thanks to the initial revelations of heidlow – and here’s the truly sad part. The media strategists are actually touting miarose as a success in their blogs. They are not even hiding this. Rolling Stone could have done the 10 minutes of footwork required to do a google search and blown this wide open. The folks at PodTech talk about her like she’s a messianic figure – trumpeting the age of a new kind of promotional package, even though it’s clear “mia arose” and her collaborative con game has been done before.

This is the latest sad volley in manufactured consent… much like the audiences for Bush’s healthcare plan, bought and paid for, and televised as if they were actually a slice of america.

Tim | 1/26/2007, 10:06 am EST

Damn Antiklause. You guys just can’t leave Bush out of anything! You just blew your point, and your hostility for this young girl is a tad on the psycho side.

Doug | 1/26/2007, 10:26 am EST

You can almost hear the strategy meeting among Mia’s marketing team. “Uh well, the fictious subscribers and fake comments seem to be working.” “Huh huh, yeah. Sure a few people are p!ssed, but nothin’ we can’t handle.” “So what do we do about the Rolling Stone thing?” “Listen we’re on a roll with a winning strategy. More of the same. A few glowing reviews. Talk her up, blah blah blah…” “Hell ya. (pause) Shall we grab an early lunch?”

The sad part is that Rolling Stone and other supposedly media-savvy websites haven’t done a moment’s homework. Minus the fake subscribers, Mia wouldn’t register as a shiver on the Youtube Richter scale. Minus the auto-refresh software, the only people watching the vids would be her family. The only people posting comments are her PR people and those annoyed by the manipulation and machinations.

The only thing she’s going to be singing in six months time is “Do You Want Fries With That?”

Antiklaus | 1/26/2007, 11:27 am EST

why should I not be upset at this latest fabrication coming into the Youtube community? The creation of thousands of bogus accounts and refresher-bots has a definate degratory effect on a community I am helping to build. And the Bush consent reference was believe it or not, apolitical. I could easily have mentioned the Clinton press conference following his impeachment – a totally stacked audience with no hard questions. My point was that the idea of manufactured concent is not new, even in the mainstream. It’s sad that it creeps into places like Youtube communities, some of the last bastions of free speech left for the public, and we have to fend off these pre-packaged creations who ruin the community for all of us. Podtech should be ashamed for their role in promoting her, and Rolling Stone should be ashamed for not lifting a finger to do the work required to investigate this story – which would have meant nothing more than making a phone call to Podtech, or a simple Google search.

PARocks.com | 1/26/2007, 11:55 am EST

Ok Doug, you quoted me, so I’m gonna fire back.

================== ===== ===
Doug – Wow. Feels like Mia’s PR people have followed the developing story and are engaged in a damage limitation exercise here.

Me – That’s supposed to be me? You have proved to me that you’re full of it.

Doug – Her songs are forgettable, her singing wouldn’t get her through the first round auditions of Pop Idol/America Idol.

Me – I can’t argue with an opinion.
Simon would say “I think the audience would like you” It’s possible that someone could possibly use the word “pitchiness”
Paula might use the phrase “beautiful voice”. Definitely going to Hollywood though, but that’s my opinion.

Doug – “Majors should be embarrassed by being beaten so convincingly by an unsigned artist.” This is the point at which you realize the PR people are at work.

Me – This is where you lose the argument. And I invite anyone to test me on this. My name is Jim Lott, I live in Pennsylvania. I’ve owned PARocks.com since 1997, and webmusicvideo.com since 1998. Do a whois on it. I’ve never met Mia.
I’ve never received communication from Mia. Friend me on myspace. myspace.com/parocks. I’ll tell you all that. it’s interesting about the nature of proof, though. Anyway. I assure you that I’m not her PR person. I will say that I’m qualified for a job on the Mia team, if there is one. I like the band team I’m on now, we got a record coming out late spring, major distro. (it looks like), a novel label structure, etc., so, that’s gonna be exciting. It would be better if Mia was here though.

Doug – Mia hasn’t ‘beaten’ anybody

Me – Did Daughtry beat anybody? I’m
making the argument that the person at the #1 spot “beat” those below.
I’d have to think about it a while, but if Daughtry (re Daughtry – Le-O! Le-O! Le-O!) beat Dreamgirls, then Mia beat MyChem. Perhaps “beating” requires a structured, head-to-head competition, whatever.

Doug – and anyone with a grasp of the extent of the fake subscribers, fake comments, automated refresher software to inflate the number of views etc., etc. understands this.

Me – Ok, Mr software expert Doug please provide links to this software. I’m not saying it doesn’t exist. I have no idea if it exists.
You have no idea if she used it. But, I’d be interested in checking it out, as would probably a lot of youtubers. I looked at that mia exposed video, and fake subscribers and fake comments. I guess i didn’t watch it close enough. Maybe if you could just give me one link that definitively proves “fake” subscribers, I’d look at it differently. I mean, part of the argument was “these people have no videos, therefore, they’re fake”, well, some people just like to watch the videos, not put up their own videos. Maybe they, a newby checking out youtube for the first time from a website like, oh, rollingstone.com, hit a button that said, request a subscriber or something. Give me better proof than that. Lonelygirl15 was found out, I believe, because it was proved that emails were coming from (I think) CAA. Bingo, LonelyGirl15 was nailed. Many of you have a lot of time on your hands, especially you “haters”, go find real proof. Go and find out the real truth. Personally, I would like to know this whole story. Every single detail. I would very much like to read a book about this. This girl, Mia Rose (do we know shes a girl? perhaps she’s a cyborg? a shape-shifting reptilian? fake!), went from being completely unknown (more or less) to number 1 on youtube, with her smiling face on the homepage of the rolling stone in less than a month. How did it happen? Precisely. Every single detail. Who is on her team? What are they doing every single moment?
How is Mia feeling every single moment? And I want it to be 100% true.

Doug – If Mia was a rare talent and a ravishing beauty, why would she need to have her management company manipulate YouTube’s viewing and subscriber figures?

Me – Leaving aside the fact that you haven’t proven that that manipulation has taken place, let’s ask a related question – why would she want to have a lot of viewers and subscribers? and answer it below.

Doug – Wouldn’t her talent simply create a fan base naturally?

Me – You’re not in the music business are you Doug? Here’s a story which might give you a little bit of insight into the music business. Have you heard of Eliot Spitzer? He was NY’s Attorney General (now Governor). As Attorney General, he brought suit against major labels. Apparently,
major labels would pay money to third parties. Those third parties would give money to PDs/MDs/DJs, items of value to radio stations, trips and computers were popular gifts. This was apparently all illegal, and major labels had to pay millions of dollars. Why did I tell that story? Why were major labels apparently breaking laws in order to get played on the radio?
We’re getting close to the secret.
Here it is. The big secret. Major Labels are trying to make money by selling records. Part of their “make money by selling records” strategy involved the theory that, if a person heard the song on the radio, they might like the song, and want to spend money on an item, typically a CD, but in earlier days, cassettes and vinyl, that allowed them to listen to the song whenever they wanted. That money that the person spent to buy the CD, would go to the record company.
Ok. Got that? The theory in broader terms is this. 1) First, people hear something, then 2) they buy something. They can hear something on the radio, or, tying it back, on YouTube. You see, I suspect that what Mia Rose wants is to be signed, and to help a Major Label make $. Many people have heard Mia Rose’s songs, and now, they want to spend money on a CD.
Ok, you get the point. Note that I didn’t mention talent.

Doug – Here’s an even crazier notion. How about Mia gigging locally, sending in demos to record labels. It’s slower but a lot more likely to establish credibility.

Me – Ok, I’ll give credit where credit is due. You understand gigging and demos. Bands do that.
19 year old pop girls typically don’t, but, yes, I’m not going to dis gigging and demos. But, major labels (I think) will be interested in whether or not the product will sell. Being number 1 on youtube tends to indicate that the product will sell. An aside, I could get Mia a gig around here right now, it would be very easy now. A month ago, not so easy. So, if she wanted to tour right now, it’d be easy. And the YouTube video is kinda like a demo.

Doug – Her managers have set her up for the biggest of falls. She’s attracted anger on YouTube not seen since the ‘reveal’ of that other marketing confection, LonelyGirl15.

Me – Based on the available evidence, there does seem to be some anger, I grant you that.

Doug – She’s (or more correctly, her marketing team) been banned from LiveVideo.

Me – I heard that a few places. Proof?

Doug – Way to go guys. You’ll have her flipping burgers by Christmas.

Me – Unlikely. She’ll stay in school if it doesn’t work out. But it will work out.

PARocks… did you even look at a single comment I left?

This girl is being OPENLY DISCUSSED on a BLOG for PODTECH as a success of their “Social Media” program!

What more “evidence” do you need?

They are openly touting her as a success. The sad part is all this took was a single Google search to scrape up. It’s not like I have an inside angle on the industry… I’m just a schmuck who pays attention. People with the inside track should KNOW she is a creation. Especially if they deal with Podtech.

Antiklaus | 1/26/2007, 12:49 pm EST

As for the questions posed by the Rolling Stone Article – I answer thusly. She has not only violated the social contract, but her terms of service agreement she agreed to when she signed up with Youtube. Section 5C specifically, subsections iv and vi – i do believe.

As for her ‘talent’ – most of it lies squarely on her boobs. She is the perfect teenager wet dream material. Perfect to promote, despite a questionable talent and a poor sense of rhythm, and the creative skill of a 1st year guitar student.

Let’s see what the future holds and you haters will be WRONG!

Doug | 1/26/2007, 2:03 pm EST

Response to Jim – Part One

I genuinely thank you for you response Jim. I’ll answer a few of the issues you raise. Mia’s fame (such as it is) rests on her popularity gauged by the YouTube viewing and subscription figures. Mia went from zero to the 5th most subscribed channel in the history of YouTube in a month. One month. From day one, ’subscribers’ signed up in their thousands. I don’t care if you’re the new Joni Mitchell, you’d be lucky to get a hundred subscribers in your first week. A thousand on your first day? People became suspicious. It transpires that there are hundreds of accounts who have subscribed and never even seen a Mia video. Now why would anyone do that?

Now a good number of these phantom subscribers – who have never seen her videos and have never posted comments on any thread – are unsubscribing. Now why would they do that? Is the scam too obvious?Or are they terminally indecisive?

If you want proof, check out the heidilow (a poster on this thread) vids on YouTube. They take you through the mechanics and strategy of the scam.

And you’re right Jim, I don’t work in music. I work in advertising. I’m well aware of how to create hype.

You talk about the deals and scams involved throughout the music industry (you could have also added the record company people who’ve been caught buying their artists’ singles to push them up the chart). Marketing is manipulation. Hype is manipulation. That’s the record business. And advertising.

But YouTube isn’t the music business. It is – as Elizabeth put it – a social contract. More than that, it’s an act of trust. People with no more than a webcam and a point of view have the opportunity to speak to the world. Other people believe you are who you say you are and you break that trust at your peril. For example, Lonelygirl15 is fizzling out to a sad, tired and largely despised end. People believed in her. They believed in her humor, her lifestory, her dreams. Colossal naivety maybe, but they did. When one of the world’s largest talent agencies, CAA, turned out to be behind her, the backlash was vicious and huge. The only reason to go to a Lonelygirl15 vid now is to read the vitriol poured upon her and her production team’s head in the comments section. Some of it is a lot funnier than the scripts Jessica Rose is given to read.

Response to Jim – Part Two

Which brings us to Mia. (The stage name ‘Mia Rose’ was chosen by the way because it’s the name of a well-known porn star and a regularly searched-for name on YouTube. Check out miarosexxx.com) Whatever the merits and de-merits of ‘Mia’s’ abilities, she did not stand or fall on those abilities. Her management team heaped a mountain of expectation on her slim shoulders, and in doing so broke the base of faith upon which Youtube thrives. With the greatest respect Jim, you know a lot about the music business, but apparently little or nothing about YouTube.

It was YouTubers who outed Lonelygirl15/Jessica Rose. It was YouTubers who noticed the sudden and inexplicable rise of Mia Rose. To you – and apparently many media commentators – it was a smart marketing ploy. To the people who invest their time and own home-grown talents into the site, it was a slap in the face. Until Mia’s management team get their heads around the scale of the breach of trust they’ve caused they have no hope of retrieving the situation. Can it be retrieved? Well, yes. Dump the fake subscribers. Stop inflating the views. Delete the account and allow her to start again under her own name. If she’s good enough, she floats. If she’s not, she sinks. That’s pretty much what will happen out there in the ‘real world’ to her anyway.

A lot of media commentators (Rolling Stone included, no less) appear to think this is a marketing job well done. They don’t understand YouTube. There is huge anger at the fakes, the scam artists. Big business with its glossy movie trailers and slick music videos are positively welcomed. But to corrupt the system, by mispresentation and screwing with the measures of popularity is to break the trust and is unforgiveable. A Lonelygirl movie would be lucky to go straight-to-DVD before hitting the waste bin. A Mia Rose single would be lucky to make a top 100 Ringtones chart.

You see, unfortunately for Mia’s management, the people they’ve pissed off are the same people who buy the CDs and watch the movies. The artifice that is ‘Mia Rose’ is a busted flush. The affection for her is gone. The momentum is now moving against her.

It’s disappointing that some of us doing this authentically are buried under the hype. +MaryAnne

Antiklaus | 1/26/2007, 2:39 pm EST

Well-said, Doug. I agree with you totally. It’s sad that individuals, and not media, have to police things like this – which is why people have lost much faith in traditional media – and in part, describes why Youtube is so important to so many.

crxt | 1/26/2007, 3:23 pm EST

In 1945, a young girl named Mia Rose came over to America on a flying red carpet from Africa. A mysterious PR Firm killed her career by cheating on youtube. The YouTube community completely owned this PR Firm and spray painted the words “RRRRRRR!” and “Durrr” everywhere this firm went in the digital world. Now that you have read this message, Mia Rose will come to your house on a full moon and steal your soul unless you follow these directions:
1. Retype this as a comment to 3 other videos

PARocks.com | 1/26/2007, 3:38 pm EST

This is to Doug.
Good argument.
I have been honestly researching to try to determine the truth.
I found something that makes me unhappy. And would make you happy.
Now, before we go into that, I’d like to discuss what the word “fake” means.

Let’s discuss LonelyGirl15 (btw, I know little about YouTube, not nothing) from what i understand, lonelygirl15 was supposedly a real person with a real vlog about her life, right? but, it turned out that she was an actress reading a script. And that script was written by CAA, yes? To me there are 2 primary bad things about the lonelygirl15 scenario.

1) lonelygirl15 was not a real person. she was an actress.
she, lonelygirl15 was by definition fake.

2) lonelygirl15 was created by CAA.
I’m guessing that if, let’s say, she created this whole fictional persona herself, or her high school buddy cooked up this scheme, it wouldn’t have hurt as much. Because YouTube is seen as a refuge from the relentless persuasion techniques, mass marketing, the fact that it was done by the same very people who create the hollywood hype blockbusters, it hurt more, it was worse, it was doubly bad.

Ok, now, how does Mia compare?

1) as to the fakeness level of Mia
Let’s just assume that you’re right for the sake of argument. Let’s assume that Mia’s stats were built in part through the use of technology that may or may not violate YouTubes terms of service. Let’s assume that fictional accounts were set up. What, then, is fake? Does that make Mia fake?
You and many others say yes. Does that make Mias apparent massive popularity fake? Um, it does appear so, unfortunately. But, since I will admit that I do love her (I think it’s the eyes), I do want to defend her. She is a human, not a robot, we can assume. She claims to be a girl. We haven’t seen her genitalia, but I’m gonna go with yes. She does appear to be singing.
We can analyze every statement she has made either in writing or on video. Is it true or false? If she can be caught making untrue statements, that might help someones argument that she, herself, is fake. About the porno name. Yes, I caught that right away. Jan 6 or 7. I don’t think we can say with complete certainty that it was intentional. And, 1) she links to her myspace from her YouTube and 2) she says her real name is Maria there. So, if she admits that Mia Rose is a stage name, I don’t see the problem. Madonna. Cher. Jon Stewart. Countless others. Stage names are not uncommon. Ok, I’m not sure you’ll agree, but I think I’ve made a fairly convincing argument that although Mia’s massive popularity might be fake, Mia herself is what she appears to be, a girl singing, with a first name of Maria who goes by her nickname Mia. At least we don’t have evidence otherwise. Also, I may add, you don’t have the evidence to convince me that her massive popularity is fake, I found it (I think). I think that if you changed the word fake, you might make a better argument. LonelyGirl15 was fake, and I think that many of you are analyzing this Mia thing through that prism, grid, paradigm, whatever. Perhaps you should change the word “fake” to “cheating”. The word fake goes to identity, while cheating goes to processes. Since processes are whats being questioned, the word better suits your argument.

2) As to who did it. With LonelyGirl15, it was CAA. The “bad guys”. You are assuming that a big PR firm and/or a management team had something to do with this. Big $, same ol bs, you know what I mean. But, what if it was a Portugese geeky teenage computer nerd who misses them?

Doug, my question is this: In the sentence above, there is one wrong word. One word that reveals the proof. What is it?

Paul | 1/26/2007, 8:56 pm EST

Last week I witness this girl get 800 subscribers in 4 hours. Not even YouTube queen Lonelygirl got anywhere close that amount in a similar time period (usually 100-200). Miaarose was blatantly and obviously cheating the system and youtube should kick her off for it, and her little (fake) subscribers too!

Stan | 1/26/2007, 9:54 pm EST

Ysabellabrave (see above) doth protest too much. She is just as guilty of manipulating the system, if not much more subtle. She won’t allow anyone to criticize her in any way. Go ahead — try to say something less than flattering on her YouTube vids and they never get approved. She then bans you on top of that!

Censoring comments with a vengeance makes it look like the whole world loves you when in fact there are many who might find you annoying or mediocre.

If Ysabella is that thin-skinned about even minor criticism then she has zero chance of making it in the world outside of YouTube.

Dave | 1/26/2007, 10:45 pm EST

What’s the big deal?
What’s the difference between miaarose and CBS putting up all their promotional crap!

Seems like Your videos are a bit of self-promotion too, heidilow! Good for you! You have 12,926 channel views as of now.

OH, and why don’t you put your face on the video and TALK! Your video gave me a headache trying to read all of that nonsense.

Quit whining and go to LIveVideo if you don’t like YT.

Antiklaus | 1/26/2007, 11:06 pm EST

The difference between CBS and miarose is simple. CBS doesn’t claim to be something other than what they are, and they don’t use bogus accounts and auto-refresher bots to bump up their ratings.

Both of those latter actions degrade the performance of the YT community, and the fact that she’s faking her way to the top bumps out other legitimate users who might otherwise get noteriety. There are much better performers who are being ignored, and it’s not fair for some PR machine to dictate to us what we should like.

By the way, Rolling Stone, if you are looking for a freelance journalist who actually does their homework (aka can research a story) – message me on Youtube. =)

kazumii2006 | 1/26/2007, 11:14 pm EST

I think she should have done it the honest way, but whoever she is, wherever she lives, she’s a good singer. It’s just too bad she was naive enough to let any PR or anybody else for that matter; blow her chances of starting out in the honest way.

Just my two cents. Nothing special.

kazumii2006 | 1/26/2007, 11:17 pm EST

Plus, ever hear the saying; “there’s no such thing as bad pr”?. Now because of all this fake or not-fake stuff, she’s now here on Rolling Stone, only to become even more noticed, searched, and popular.

Ryan | 1/27/2007, 4:06 am EST

She was born in Wimbledon, England according to one of her video blogs on YouTube and went to an American school in Portugal where she picked up the accent. Her mom is Portugese and dad is English.

I think she is great and should be at the top of the most subscribed list on YouTube, have you seen the other “YouTube Stars” at the top of the list? Its just a bunch of nomarks talking about their boring lives. Look out for a guy named WilliamSledd (YouTubes gay hero) who last time I looked was ahead of MiaaRose on the most subscribed list.

Jorge (dUbHitZ) | 1/27/2007, 5:57 am EST

Mia Rose is Katharine McPhee!?!!?!!?

Graham | 1/27/2007, 7:15 am EST

I would cum all across them titties.

Tricia | 1/27/2007, 12:31 pm EST

She’s a mediocre singer who doesn’t sound any different from people who try out for Pop Idol/American Idol and don’t make it. She’ll never make it. EsmeeDenters on the other hand…WILL make it. Peace.

i know her. | 1/27/2007, 4:52 pm EST

I know Maria Rosa personally, or at least i did as she went to my school. She is a liar. Do not believe anything she says. She never went to an american school, she went to St.Julians which is an “international school” that actually is more british than anything else. She used to have the thickest english accent but slowly dropped it as “american” accents are more “in”.

She is very spoilt and her parents will do anything for her to be happy, even fly her to places like switzerland where they spend bucket loads of money to rent a studio for her to play in.

She was never liked at school because of her lying ways. She puts on a front and acts like she will rule the world one day. This girl has no contract with any label, she is just very sad and probably thought she would raise to fame by sticking her videos on any site she can find (Hence you all think she is one big pre-packaged fake who’s reps are behind her). This is wrong. She does not. Any dummy accounts you believe she has, well she most probably did that herself.

Through articles like this one here, Maria is becoming more popular by the minute which is very lame. No one has heard her live…how can anyone believe she can sing?

If you do not believe me then do your own research. last i heard she was still in portugal where her parents own a restaurant called “Al Fresco”. It is situated in Estoril right by the famous Casino.

blah.. | 1/27/2007, 7:49 pm EST

hey
i’ve heard mia. from what it looks like she appears to be singing..or its just AMAZING lip-syncing, but i think she can sing and she has the BEST VOICE I HAVE EVER HEARD!!and the songs she writes!!amazing!!and ive tried taking guitar lessons..and i gave up..its hard..so making the music yourself too!tht makes her even better..and mia is just her nickname for gods sake people!the other mia rose is some stupid porn star!who cares?!?mia rose is a great name..n i would have chosen it even if it was a porn stars name..
and who cares about where shes from and her accent and all..really!?
either u ppl are just jealous OR/AND just want to get attention OR/AND are friends with or ARE her competitors.

and i really dont want to argue with you about this whole thing until mia becomes famous(which she will)and you’ll see for yourself.

n btw..lonely girl 15 sucks..i dont mean her..shes an actress..but the stuff she says..its not even funny!or interesting…i mean..come on!some stupid writers!its all the same stuff as every other show!how abt something different..?

on the other hand, mia rose/maria can actually sing, write her own songs, and is really…herself!which is amazing…because its hard to be yourself completely in front of millions of ppl!most ppl pretend to be cool a little bit..even i tend to..soo..
my conclusion..
MIA ROCKS!!
P.S. and NO im not mia(so dont even think of saying tht) and dont know mia or have seen her or anything..just a viewer like every1 else!!

Rek | 1/28/2007, 4:01 am EST

Shes so sexy ..

Doug | 1/28/2007, 3:11 pm EST

Perhaps you’re right Jim – ‘cheat’ is a more appropriate word than ‘fake’ to describe Mia Rose’s sudden and briefly inexplicable rise. After all, that’s *her* voice, *her* guitar playing. But fake is a totally appropriate word to describe what’s been happening around her. Fake subscribers. Fake comments. Fictional flights to see record company executives (see her latest vid) while all that’s been happening in reality is her management team has been in conclave to determine the next move after the views and subscription rigging was blown.

Whether someone see this as simply smart marketing or not seems to me to depend on one thing. Their attitude to YouTube. YouTube is more than a ’social contract’. It’s an act of faith. The ‘web phenom’ isn’t Mia Rose, it’s YouTube. And it’s almost completely driven by its subscribers. Literally hundreds of thousands of people upload videos; millions more watch. Yes, it’s awash with dross – but it’s real dross from genuinely untalented people. It’s *their* dross. A democracy of dross if you like.

And within this democracy, people rise and fall on merit. When someone screws with the subscription and viewing figures, they elevate mediocrity. And that, it seems to me, is what’s happened here.

Of course if you view YouTubers as geeks, loners and weirdoes, it matters not a jot. Why get all bent out of shape? Because it matters to the subscribers, the posters and the viewers. It particularly matters to – for example – the thousands of musicians who compose their songs, make their vids and upload them. Every subscriber they have is fairly earned and hard-won.

I feel genuinely sorry for Maria. She almost certainly didn’t ask for all this. She’s a beautiful girl with a bright future, though not necessarily in music. But the people around her have done her a huge disservice. There’s anger at what was done on YouTube. She’s been banned from LiveVideo. Her entry has been taken down on Wikipedia.

Pissing off the people you want to buy your records by cheating is not smart marketing. It’s a sham and people see through it all too quickly.

Ted | 1/28/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Eloquently put Doug. Put what bothers me is that you are so strong in your conviction that she is fake/cheating.
To me it seems that you have passed by the chance, all too quickly, that she could genuinely be just a teen girl posting videos and somehow the circumstances (her looks maybe) bringing her a load of views. I admit she is endearing, and am hardly surprised. The “fake subscribers” do not necessarily mean that they have come from her. There are a lot of weird fanboys out there.
If you go to her YouTube channel she states that she has not been involved with any form of cheating, and neither have her managers, etc. If you watch her earlier videos she certainly just seems as if she is at home just nonchalantly making videos for her amusement.
Is it really that hard to believe that an innocent girl has had some possible fake subsribers (not necessarily made by her or her team, or any PR firm), and is now being overly criticized? Many of the other subscribers are legit, and she deserves this popularity anyways (maybe more for her looks than a singer; she should be an actress in my opinion). Is genuineness that rare these days?

Sascha | 1/28/2007, 7:48 pm EST

So everyone is wondering if Mia Rose cheated her way onto becoming YouTube’s most popular singer… Some people are even starting to think she isn’t real, and that she sings from hotel rooms because of the lack of decoration in her room. Well, since I know her, because she used to go to my school, I will tell you all that yes, it is she who sings all those songs, it is her own house from where she sings those songs (I know this because I’ve been at her house), and she isn’t an actress. She’s just posting her own songs on YouTube to be seen, like everyone else who posts videos on YouTube. True, I’ve seen loads of better singers than her, and I also believe most if not all of the attention given to her is because of her looks, but she just happened to be lucky and became YouTube famous. What annoys me though isn’t the fact that she became popular and that she is “cheating” her way through with “fake” subscribers. What annoys me is the fact that nobody truly knows how she really is as a person. The way she portrays herself on the videos is surprisingly well acted out to appear innocent and very naive and pure. But Mia Rose is a rich spoilt little girl, who lived in Portugal and studied in an International School and couldn’t get along with anyone there because of her arrogance and two-faced nature. But I wont be another one of those haters posting hate notes about Mia Rose, because it is just pointless. Nobody really cares what kind of person she really is, right? As long as she is “blandly pretty” and can entertain, all is good. So in the end, I hope I managed to clear anything up. But I also must ask, why is this girl getting so much attention instead of other girls who are much more original and can sing much better? Obviously, it’s how you sell yourself…

Doug | 1/28/2007, 8:32 pm EST

Good questions Ted. But first, let’s just say that genuineness isn’t that great a rarity. The thousands of other musicians on YouTube (although they’re nowhere near as pretty as Maria) are genuine. Their subscriber bases and views are genuine. Their talents (or lack of them) are genuine.

The Lone Gunman/Crazed Fan theory has been raised a few times. One YouTuber called it, rather pithily and intelligently, ‘plausible deniability.’ What makes me so convinced that this isn’t some besotted youth?

1. Immediacy. Within a few hours of posting, the subscribers started pouring in. What you’re asking me to believe is that, amongst the thousands of videos uploaded that day, someone spotted Mia’s, became enamored and then set about a sustained campaign to elevate the video and channel to the status of YouTube legend. They did all that within hours? Well, it’s the kind of thing people do isn’t it?

2. Sophistication. Said besotted youth wasn’t apparently just besotted, he was a techie god. Auto-refresh programs, a ready-made inventory of different user-names and hundreds of different e-mail addresses to avoid having multiple user names from the same address. Perhaps he had them just lying around for such a moment. Perhaps he’d been waiting for this moment all of his life (oh lord) as Phil Collins once said.

And he was marketing savvy too. He knew two things: (a) that simply auto-refreshing would inflate the number of views, but would be blatantly obvious if the number of subscribers was just a handful. He understood you had to have one to justify the other. (b) He also understood that the channels represented the best vehicle for developing a relationship with a potential fan base. A one-off highly-viewed video might be pleasing, but to keep interest piqued subscribers to the channel were vital. Showing huge growth in channel subscribers brings in other (now real) subscribers who don’t want to miss out. An ordinary geek would have just inflated the number of views. This one apparently also has an extraordinary grasp of internet marketing and the way YouTube operates for marketers.

3. Persistence. Having gotten the ball rolling, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the besotted Lone Geek would sit back and congratulate himself on a job well done. But no, he’s persisted for weeks. It’s almost like, well a *job* to him. He paused briefly to post a glowing report on Wikipedia (which was then pulled down by the site’s admin), and then followed Mia Rose and her team across to LiveVideo where he pursued the same tactics and promptly got her banned.

So what we have is a lone fan, who instantaneously created hundreds – no, thousands – of accounts, subscribed en masse, set the bots onto auto-refresh. All this from a sole geek with a hard on? Eh, I’ll file that one under ‘highly unlikely’.

The shame of it is Maria’s talent cannot sustain the hype. Her singing is karaoke, her guitar playing is basic and with little rhythm, her songs forgettable. What she has is beauty. Breathtaking looks. What her handlers have done is set the stage for the mother of all backlashes. Ask Jessica Rose and the CAA boys about the YouTube backlash.

I’ve seen it asked a few times if “it’s so easy, why aren’t more marketing people working the YouTube system to their advantage?” The answer is that YouTube has its own built-in bullshit detector – its subscribers. A genuinely intelligent marketer will know that sooner or later, a faker, a cheater, call them what you like, will get found out. And when they do they lose the very thing that YouTube offers in the first place – the appearance of a genuine groundswell of popularity.

I’ll say it again because it holds true no matter who you believe originated the Mia Rose scam: Close down the account. Start up afresh under the name Maria Rosa. Sing the songs.

If there’s genuine excitement and interest the channel will thrive. Maria, as a young singer-songwriter, doubtless sees herself as An Artist. Isn’t in her interest as an artist to re-establish her credibility? If herself or her managers were blameless of any views and subscriptions rigging, isn’t starting anew the first thing they’d want to do?

Unless they started in the first place of course.

Ted | 1/28/2007, 10:38 pm EST

It is annoying how some people say that they are from her school or know her personally. It is impossible to tell if you just comment. With no evidence, it would be futile except there are even dumber people who would believe what they read even though they know anybody can write anything about anybody. I can refute what Sascha just said by saying “No, she actually has a nice personality because she is my cousin’s friend”.

Larz | 1/29/2007, 3:42 am EST

I agree with those who say YouTube phenoms like Mia Rose and MaryAnn/ysabellabrave are phony baloney and have to cheat their way to internet stardom, but HELLO, everyone knows the web is full of this kind of deception. Lonelygirl15 was a wakeup call for YouTube goers — or should have been.

I also agree that mediocrity is elevated by this easily manipulated system. Thank God no singer born of YouTube has been taken seriously by the music industry. When that happens we’re all in trouble.

Sascha | 1/29/2007, 6:13 am EST

To TED:

I can see she’s fooled you too. That’s why I said it’s futile to try to show to other people how arrogant she is. And on the other hand, why would you care anyways? It’s not like she flirted and hit on your boyfriend, and it’s not like she didn’t dismiss you for not sucking up to her like it happened with most of the people who saw right through her. If you really want me to prove it to you, just gimme ur email and I’ll send all the pictures of Mia Rose’s house, school, friends, best friends, boyfriends, exs (well, most of them are exs because from what I heard, none her boyfriends could stand her due to the fact that she’s a daddy’s girl and that if she didn’t get what she wanted, she’d have a fit), any pictures you want. But like I said, why would you care? As long as she can entertain… the way I see it, she’s our next Britney Spears… in other words, pop industrialized rubbish.

Larz | 1/29/2007, 6:51 am EST

Sascha,

Save all your pictures of Mia Rose’s house, school, friends, best friends, boyfriends, etc.

That stuff only matters when she’s under contract. That day may never come since gatekeepers to musical success are onto this sort of crap.

Don’t give Mia Rose and her ilk any further cred by making it seem like they’re important enough to care about one way or the other.

Doug | 1/29/2007, 11:24 am EST

There are now some strange things going on. YouTube themselves have disabled the function that allows you to see when a subscriber has joined a channel but never watched it. In effect, it makes it impossible now to ascertain whether a subscriber is genuine or not. It actually makes it much *easier* to pull another Mia Rose scam. Why would they do that?

And now it also appears that a YouTube administrator/employee is also representing Mia Rose in advance of any future recording contracts. Could it be that the management of YouTube see Mia as their ‘breakout act’?

I can’t help but feel with a sinking heart that the new owners of YouTube (in common with some Rolling Stone posters) don’t understand what YouTube is about. Its founders, Chad Hurley and Steven Chen understood that the integrity of the site was the basis of its success. You can holler ‘helllooooo…the web’s all fake’ as long and loudly as you like, but YouTube sunscribers actually trust each other. Crazy I know. This being the case, you undermine that trust at your peril.

The new manaegment appear to be blundering around, trying to drum up the viewing figures by every means possible. Lonelygirl stayed in the ‘People’ section, long after it was apparent that ‘Bree’ wasn’t even a real person. ‘Mia Rose’ still sits proudly at the peak of the ‘new subscribers’ section even though it’s apparent that nearly all of her subscribers are fictional. Worse than that, they appear now to be driving the phonies to pre-eminence and creating the controversy themselves.

All this on a site that grew to be a monster out of the sheer numbers of ordinary, unremarkable people having their say. By allowing, encouraging and courting controversy, they’re starting a rot that will eat away at the essence of YouTube itself. God help YouTube. God help Mia Rose.

Antiklaus | 1/29/2007, 1:16 pm EST

It seems to be true. Youtube, through their acts with the website, not only seem to condone, but ENDORSE the cheaters. They have received THOUSANDS of complaints about the cheaters, and their response is to hide the evidence of cheating.

And worse still, their mouthpieces (the users they pay for content) appear to be telling us all (via Renetto and YouTubeNEWS) that Youtube is going to become a corporate comptetition where it’s going to be all about how well you can cheat – and you will be paid for your successes.

I’m a computer savvy guy. I could easily play this game, cheat my way to the top, and get paid to post mediocre videos. But then I’d be crapping all over the community that Youtube was supposed to be.

heidilow | 1/29/2007, 8:23 pm EST

Because of my IV Mia Rose EXPOSE video called, “Mia Rose / YouTube Payola Conspiracy?”

http://www.you tube.com/watch?v=zt6qChouIyM

YouTube has relunctly turned back on the “Videos Watched” feature. Also, after EXPOSING that YourTubeNEWS is Mia Rose’s promoter and representative, YouTube has failed to comment at this time.

Antiklaus | 1/30/2007, 1:27 am EST

All damage control. But sadly, not a solution to the problems they are creating – and those problems that through apathy or negligence or deliberate interference, promoting.

They must have invested VERY heavily in our young miaarose… because they seem to want to hold desperately onto the idea that she is completely legitimate, even if they have to harm the community, and ruin their failing reputation.

Sascha | 1/30/2007, 1:16 pm EST

doesnt matter anymore how she manipulated youtube. the fact is, she finally got what she wanted, a record deal with Atlantic Records in new york, as it says in Sun newspaper from britain. oh well, yet another lily allen.

sutnerit | 1/30/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Jury is out. I guess maybe some people with have to eat crow on the Miaarose comments. Maybe heidilow and antiklaus the investigative reporters?

Antiklaus | 1/30/2007, 2:44 pm EST

what’s to eat crow over? She’s a cheat, and her PR firm pushed it through, with the help of Youtube itself.

Wow, with all of those things going for her, how could she fail?

Doug | 1/30/2007, 3:44 pm EST

I assume that those who pointed out that Mia Rose’s management pushed her to prominence by rigging YouTube will have to eat crow because she now has a record deal. Well whoopee woo. Integrity pays.

I’m quite pleased. Without systematic cheating, she’ll have to do something she’s never managed before. Stand or fall on her own abilities. I have no ill will towards Maria herself – after all it was the grown ups who decided to fake all the accounts – but let’s be blunt. She’s achingly, achingly mediocre.

And I assume that the ‘thousands’ of keen Mia fans who have so nobly supported her will be going out to buy her CDs. Can fictional people actually buy CDs?

Insight. | 1/31/2007, 5:37 am EST

Ok, you’re a bit blind here. First of all, the girl isn’t British, and you can see that from her name and website. Secondly, she’s been doing what she’s doing for the past 10 years or so. She’s as fake or as real as every other teenager with a semi decent voice and a guitar.

ST.Jul's. Yr.13 2007 | 1/31/2007, 6:09 am EST

Sascha you are as ridiculous as Maria Rosa! We love you both…NOT!

Sascha | 1/31/2007, 11:36 am EST

tell me i’m ridiculous… you’re the one who comes from her own school… you must be just like her: rich, spoilt and a skanky arrogant little person. call me ridiculous, at least i’m clever enough to know that putting all those hate posts about mia, wont take me anywhere. might as well just admit that she got to where she wanted and wait until she shows who she really is and let everyone see that she is as fake as that british accent she put on whilst being interviewed by bbc radio. she’s probably be the next marjorie estiano (who the hell is marjorie estiano??? EXACTLY)

and just for the record, at least i dont have to carry the burden of coming from the same unethical school as she came from (st julians)… so for the record:

Last year, the backers and promoters of a Scottish performer, Sandi Thom, fabricated an audience for Thom’s webcasts which enabled them to gain mainstream media hype. Sound familiar?

This year, the game has simply moved to YouTube – where it’s dead simple to rig the number of viewers.

Mia Rose is a transparent promotion, and that’s what makes todays recording industry go ’round.

It’s a shame to think that YouTube will become a playground for these sort of schemes, but, new forums will always emerge for real online communities. And, once these are discovered as potential profit centres, they’ll become corrupted, and the cycle will continue…

lolla | 2/1/2007, 6:30 pm EST

mia Rose is nothing special. She often sing out of tune. There are alot more talented singers out there. She just looks cute and that what sells.

Thom | 2/1/2007, 9:14 pm EST

She is the hottest piece of ass out there! And cute, beautiful, sexy all rolled into one!

heidilow | 2/1/2007, 10:36 pm EST

It looks like Doug is the one eating crow because he claimed Mia Rose has been signed on with Atlantic Records…BUT Atlantic Records said NO!

———-

Mia Rose: YouTube’s biggest hit or just another PR stunt?
January 30, 2007

However, a spokeswoman for Atlantic Records in London said she was unaware of any deal but added: “It could be something that’s being dealt with by the States.”

Video-sharing website YouTube has been deluged by claims of a ‘fix’.

The correspondents point out that Mia Rose is represented by Australian ‘media manager’ Damien Estreich, who runs YouTube news channel, YourTubeNews.

They suggest Mia Rose’s video blog has become artificially inflated with allegedly fake comments being repeatedly posted to make it appear viewed on the site the most.

Hey, heidilow, would you handle my PR from now on? Thanks to you Mia’s ten times as famous as she was a month ago. When her CD finally comes out, look for your name on the thank-you list. I hope you dedicate your efforts to “expose” all te projects I’m involved with, so I can then get all this “exposure” Same goes to you, Doug!

I have to agree that lazy journalism is the story here.

But the ease with which Youtube figures can be inflated also has implications for its proposals to pay content providers. What advertiser would pay to post on the site of a provider who inflates their viewing figures?

Youtube needs to invest in some fraud detection to safeguard its future.

Lugann | 2/20/2007, 8:53 pm EST

I believe her father is a very well to do and about the globe Brit. Her mother is Portuguese (explains Mia’s cute/hot factor…sorry, but most blondes are boring) and is also of privileged circumstances. This girl will never want of anything and is (right now) having the time of her life. No need for some of you to get bent out of shape here. If she has what it takes…great. If not…fuck it.

flick | 2/24/2007, 7:13 am EST

the scary thing about this world, is that becoming famous isn’t really based on talent anymore, although I’ll admit she has it.

It’s all about marketing a product.

and shes a marketable product.

Sally180405 | 2/28/2007, 6:19 am EST

Until today i didnt hear anything about Mia…but then I youtubed Belly Furtados lates song that mia covered as well and i was stunned…as a result i spent the last hour listening to various of her songs…i think she has an amazing voice..she is a natural talent and seems sweet too..i do agree with flick that she is a marketlable product..but isnt that smart the way she did it??and im sure when she put her first song on youtube that wasnt her intention…

Ringadingding | 3/1/2007, 9:38 pm EST

Today I was introduced to Mia with her “still the one” clip. Is it really just me or is she regularly out of tune and unable to keep in rythm of the music? Argh, the pain…

can't tell who i am | 3/6/2007, 8:33 am EST

i’ve got pictures of mia rose (the actual innocent looking singer) naked… who ever wants them just say something…. she would take a lot of them…..

anon | 3/7/2007, 7:06 pm EST

I went to school with her (in Portugal) and I would just like to clarify that SHE IS NOT ENGLISH/BRITISH but speaks with a ‘fake’ english accent and likes to think she is.

anonymous | 3/7/2007, 7:13 pm EST

I would just like to clarify that she is NOT BRITISH. I know this because i was at school with her for a number of years before she left

Liz | 3/9/2007, 2:32 pm EST

Why is she thought of as having a great voice? After listening to her videos it seems to me that she often sings out of tune, cant keep rythm, and is unable to sustain notes. I dont call that a great singing voice….

Isn’t it funny how everyone who professes that she is “great”, a “wonderful singer” and the like also all say she’s “beautiful” too? Nope. No bias here… nosiree. I also find it odd how there were so many accounts made on YouTube in one hour and all of them subscribed/favourited solely to Mia’s videos. Nope, no odd goings on here. Not at all.

The amazing thing is that the “official” recording industry does it with Madonna it was alright.
Here it is somenow not ok.
Whether it is a marketing hype or an innocent girl doing it by herself on YouTube the marketing message is the same.
The recording industry and its fat cats had better realize that times have changed.
Better get on the technology bandwagon insted of using RIAA gestapo tactics.
The official recording industry has to some ( or a great degree) been made replaceable by simply available technology.
Either get on the bandwagon, stop charging a fortune for one song on a cd and use technology to all of our advantages or get lost.

Are you aware that no matter how much you try to bring Mia down, and cause people to no longer like her only makes her even more popular? Just by commenting you’re helping this article bump up on google, and make it easier for people to find more anything on Mia.

She’s got a good voice, plus good looks and a strong personality, so sue her. While you’re hating on her, trying to make her look like a bad person, and not taking a step back, one good look at yourself, and not realizing how much you need to fix about yourself and stop worrying about what others are doing, she’s rising to fame, going to events, meeting people, living a good life.

Hmm, I wonder who wins at life?

Michelle | 7/2/2007, 7:08 pm EST

I always wondered how she got so many subscribers etc when she really isn’t that great or anything different. I’ve watched soo many singers on there that could blow her away if they got more recognition. One girl I watch is Shianne Phillips , she really is amazing at only 16.

ViCtoria~ | 7/12/2007, 2:27 pm EST

So she has an excess of charisma and many people love her due to that and her unbelievable body and looks… Is that a crime? I don’t think so. The haters just make people want to hear more from her, and reveal their ignorance :) Peace!*

Nate | 10/28/2007, 3:27 pm EST

She’s definitely got the voice to go places! It may not be as polished or developed as maybe it could be, and I think she tries too hard at vibrato sometimes, but overall it’s a still pleasure to listen to. The potential is certainly there, and that’s what counts.

As to the question of whether she’s “fake” or not, only time will tell. She seems real enough to me. And is there a such thing as “cheating” on YouTube? Say you have a few rabid fans that cheat for you–is that your fault? Artificial promotion might have gotten her noticed, but it doesn’t explain her sustained popularity.

Jack Lahentini | 10/30/2007, 7:20 pm EST

She is crap and one big scam! She can sing a little but if I walk a karoake bar inside I will find much more singers who are better then this average overrated karoake talent… she will NEVER make it because the people dont like her attitude & voice… very simple… to much negative publicity around her…
sorry to say but A&R with 20 yrs experience, I have seen thousands of this little talents see coming and go… same for that Ysabella thing… same case…
sad thing of this all is that REAL ARTISTS on YouTube get no change anymore to showcase there own work, thanks to people like Mia Rose ( or whatever is her name) and Ysabelle (aka Mary Ann). A real artist put just her name on it without doing difficult… they just put there work online to test the public out… if you think you can make it with YouuTube, then you really defently a wannabee…
I am afraid she will be not the last creep…

Sarah. | 10/31/2007, 7:05 pm EST

Tbh, I couldn’t care less if she had made ‘dummy accounts’ or not, because I still think she can sing, and damn she is hot.

HERES A INTERVIEW WITH MIA WHERE SHE ANSWERS BACK TO THE PEOPLE WHO STARTED THE RUMOR!

An interview with Mia Rose
09/27/2007
ugcDb: There were some rumors earlier on that maybe you were a “lonelygirl15″ type of person – how did you handle those kind of comments?

Mia Rose: It was definitely tough at the beginning because I wasn’t used to having people who didn’t know me judge me and criticize me – let alone formulate a preposterous theory around my rise! I understood their probable reasoning behind it but it was unfair and unjust. I guess I was just lucky and people actually enjoyed listening to me singing!! The reason why I had quite a few subscribers which had no videos watched was because YouTube has a thing where when you join for the first time you have to chose 2 or 3 (I don’t really know) channels that you can immediately subscribe to and at one point mine was one! So you see? all one big conspiracy! lol

madsss | 11/7/2007, 1:05 pm EST

she's nothing new | 5/27/2008, 6:53 pm EST

I think she’s not artist material, she’s just known because of youtube..I’ve heard better voices out there even on youtube.. this loser just got the attention from other losers that don’t do anything else but go on youtube..lets face it she’s just gonna get her 5 minutes of fame so to speak and that’s it…where is she now? she’s stuck on youtube for sure lol..Oh and it’s not jealousy because she’s no sharon stone or a christina aguilera people!! now that’s talent and beauty.

Brian | 7/31/2008, 2:10 pm EST

Does anyone still really believe this? She was born and raised in Wimbledon England, yet she speaks with a New York accent. She was “signed” to a record label almost 18 months ago yet no CD has come out. She stopped even talking about a cd almost a year ago. She doesn’t list any live shows on any of her “websites” some pictures from media events, but if she’s such a serious musician, why is her exposure limited to youtube? why isn’t she out at the clubs playing live?

Personally I like her voice and her music, whoever she is, but I’m not buying the whole “mia rose” persona any more.

Hilary | 8/3/2008, 1:31 pm EST

Mia Rose is a wonderful, talented, sweet young songwriter! Just because she was born somewhere doesn’t mean she’ll automatically have the accent. I was born in VA, and I don’t have a Southern accent. Her family’s also from Portugal, and she herself lives in New York. She doesn’t have a distinctive accent, and I think that is refreshing.

Stop bashing her, because she is making an effort, which is a lot more than many people do who have great talent.

So what is she’s “Pre-packaged”? That’s another word for “prepared” as in “ready for whatever comes her way”. You wouldn’t go to a college or job interview completely unprepared, and she didn’t get on YouTube completely unprepared–she was ready!

Plus, her website details that while there have been delays, she hopes to release her CD by the end of this month.

Things take time, and many things never make it off the cutting room floor, so have patience and be nice!

Confused | 8/28/2008, 10:40 pm EST

I will admit I am not familiar with this”lonleygirl” scandal on the all important Utube.
But let us presume that her persona is a prefabricated hoax to promote this singer. What do the handlers gain by saying she was an English nobody? Did any of you music industry experts that have time to view utube all day ever consider that if she is truly not from the UK, she can be a nobody from anywhere on the planet. The appeal would be the regular girl becomes a star through Utube videos from her house. So why the fuk would any, “so called” PR people lie about it?Just so Extra can easily investigate her background later over a lie that could just as easily been Mia from USA blew up overnight from Utube videos and shes cute and can sing! Its amazing a nobody got a record deal from her home camera!!
Who gives a shit whether or not thats true. The point is it would be pointless to lie about something that has no relevance to the so called”charade”.But IM no expert like you Utube vlogers that have been so violated by this evil child and her band of Taliban Music company employees!

Guys stop saying that she is talented. she has a very average voice, a very average guitar playing skills and her songs are not even catchy!she may look cute but come on, nothing special!
also: she is supposed to live in the UK or come from england but her accent is much more american than British!!!she doesn’t sound like one that has been to the UK more than 1month…

goby24 | 10/11/2008, 6:59 pm EST

she might not be the most talented girl i’ve ever seen but she has a pretty good voice, she’s charismatic and she’s gorgeous. i don’t know why anyone would care that much to hate her. it is kind of weird that she has a long island accent when she’s from portugal and england. anyways, i think she’s talented and has a good shot of making it.. maybe with some company like disney doing high school musical 7 (or whatever number they’re up to). but i do think that ana free is a lot more talented. she has a better voice and can jam on the guitar.

I think most people could care less about her persoanl history – whether she’s from NY or Portugal or some other place doesn’t change that I like the way she sings. If she entertains us, what does any of that matter? Brittany and Mariah Carey and Keith Richards may be total wackos with bizarre personal stories, but they make great music and it overshadows whatever kind of people they really are. Enjoy this girl’s music if you like it, change the channel if you don’t. Her true identity is unimportant.

I think that there are soo many mean people around the world, and everybody thinks that everyone is mean, is cheating..
And that´s just soo unfair!
When good people, that just want to follow their dreams or to have fun doing what they like, people say it´s false, that person cheats, that person this, that person that..
Let they be happy!
If she´ll be famous or not, time will say.
Not anyone of us.
So, be nice.
From a girl who defends what´s right,
G.

Hmmm. Ever since she found fame on YouTube with her dubious subscriber list, young Mia has done very little.

No promotion, no CD album or single, and perhaps most tellingly for a musician, not a single gig anywhere. Now assuming that Rolling Stone is in the business of covering actual artists, why run an entire feature on someone who has done no more than tens of thousands of YouTubers? She’s made videos of herself singing in her bedroom. That’s it.

Stick a fork in her. She’s done.

Mia’s background story certainly checks out. She was born in Wimbledon in 1988. Her parents married in London in 1986, and she must have lived there for at least a few years, because she has a younger brother born in the same place. (Source: UK gov-online public-domain B/M/D records)

I went to school with her in Portugal, it was an English speaking school, and so she is real and her story is true. How talented she is, is another story. But at least she isn’t a fake. I know.

I am an american gypsie,I think she is also gypsie, and does not want anyone to know it due to negative thinks people say about us.

rosie | 1/16/2009, 6:10 pm EST

Pipe down, seriously. She was in a band with ana free, I live in portugal and they always play her song ‘in my place’ on the radio here. As for the accent, i think she was born in england, but she def went to an international school in portugal. I was born in england and went to an international school overseas, and thus have the strange americanised accent too. So yes, not as far-fetched as you all may think.

Pipe down, seriously. She was in a band with ana free, i live in portugal and they always play her song on the radio here. Who cares if she’s self promoting, if you don’t like don’t watch, simple as. As for the accent she went to an international school in portugal. I was born in england and went to an international school overseas, and thus have the same americanised accent. Not so far-fetched as you may think.

Pathetic, pathetic and the most pathetic one of them all, this Doug Character. (he seems to be on a mission) This is such a non Issue its funny, the girls is pretty and she can sing. You can like or not like her music, but who is the idiot thats actually thinks she is lying because she doesnt speak with the British Accent. This is sad and very unbecoming article for Rolling Stones, this reporter should be working for Star Magazine. and Doug get over yourself.

no | 1/23/2009, 11:35 pm EST

I think Doug is just changing is name and reposting is venon over and over

Rahul | 1/27/2009, 7:19 pm EST

She is Atleast better than any other singer like brittney.

For real | 2/12/2009, 10:13 am EST

self-satisfied? Wake up, that’s just reality. Some people do not sit in front of their screen and surf the net all day like, for example let’s say news article writers on rollingstone.com. Those people have regular non-computer-access jobs in the daytime and it’s impossible for them to answer too many inquiries.

Dean-O | 2/12/2009, 10:15 am EST
