The British recording industry is having a Jerry Maguire moment, and they’re taking it out on American pop stars. This according to an article published earlier this week in the Daily Express. The paper quotes industry insiders who say that, due to plummeting sales that have put a serious squeeze on industry professionals (some have even been seen eating bag lunches from home) pop stars are going to have to make some sacrifices too. “The days of record labels indulging artists are pretty much gone,” one such lunch-bringer reportedly said.
The idea that Madonna might soon be piloting her own tour bus makes us sad. This is America. We like our rock stars big. We like big concerts, big on-stage effects, big wardrobes, big hair. And all that comes with big entourages and big egos that need their Diptyque aromatherapy candles and fresh toilet seats, okay? Still, when Warner is shelling out £160,000 on Paris Hilton’s London hotel bill, only to watch her album tank with just 13,000 copies sold, change is clearly on its way.
What do you think? Is the cult of the diva worth preserving, or should everyone go DIY?
