Daughtry Scores Big on Pretty Lame Charts, Black Eyed Peas Whiff New Album Title and More

1/24/07, 2:46 pm EST

Chris Daughtry

  • Chris Daughtry sold another 65,398 records this week, which, depressingly, secured him the Number One spot on the charts. Daughtry’s debut album (called, um, Daughtry) is now the fastest-selling rock debut in Soundscan history, which is great and everything, but it doesn’t distract from the alarming fact that 65,000 records sold tops the charts.
  • Stevie Nicks will reportedly tour and release a greatest hits album later this spring. We believe this will rock.
  • Sienna Miller is getting a lot done during her stay at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. She’s denying reports that she hooked up with Josh Harnett while hanging with Diddy.
  • We’re hoping it’s just a rumor that the Black Eyed Peas’ next record will be called From Roots to Fruits, but this is a band who brought us “My Humps,” so anything’s possible.
  • These photos of John Mayer and Jessica Simpson boarding his tour bus reveal both that they are totally together, and that they both enjoy wearing gray T-shirts.
  • Another Backstreet Boys album? We have to get out of this news roundup immediately — because, between the Simpson/Mayer sartorial symmetry and the possibility of another year with dying boy bands last-gasping, we’re starting to feel gross.

Chris is AWESOME, the ALBUM is great and DAUGHTRY deserves to be at the top of the charts. This is the 9th week the CD is on the chart. #11 is the lowest it has dropped to. Way to go DAUGHTRY!!!

JBK (Surf City Sounds Plus) | 1/24/2007, 3:37 pm EST

Dismal album sales? Could it be there’s a lapse in big spending after the holidays? I’d prefer to think instead that the public is waiting for something better than the slop being pushed on the market these days…By the left coast waters, I spin at the link above a lot from the freeform genre archives…Stories, humor, melody, with a beat…Why not look into these concepts??? Hmmmm?

Dave | 1/24/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Anything to detract from the Daughtry success. Even at #1 it gets no respect. Can we say Cha-ching?

Cornelius T. Pepperpot | 1/24/2007, 3:46 pm EST

is John Mayer freakishly tall or is jessica Simpson just mini? Also is that an Ozzy tshirt she is wearing coz that seems wrong…

Lester Bangs | 1/24/2007, 3:48 pm EST

Daughtry, even though he seems like a good guy, his music licks huge monkey balls, it’s terrible. Hence the 65,000 copies, your family friend and church can only snap up so many. To bad for a seemingly nice guy. Hope your sophmore effort is better bud.

P.S. This is what the critics said R.S. so are we suprised, c’mon.

Ben | 1/24/2007, 3:48 pm EST

Huh, slop pushed in the market? No, that’s not the problem. A lot of products are solid, there’s The Beatles Love, Dreamgirls, Daughtry, Carly Simon, Mary J. Blige, Keith Urban, etc. etc. Lets face it, the industry is having problems because of free downloading and something is going to have to be done.

Cee | 1/24/2007, 3:53 pm EST

This is trite, but at least it’s about music. Well played, Ms. Goodman. Well played.

jill hives | 1/24/2007, 4:01 pm EST

wait ’til my new album drops – that’ll fix everything.

The Wiz | 1/24/2007, 4:03 pm EST

Daughtry! Congrats on #1 and the sale of an additional 65,000 copies. Yeah it’s only 65,000, but it’s more than I’ve sold.

The music is recycled from genre’s that no longer get radio play. And Chris daughtry sings every song the same way…..as a cheap but better (?) looking version of Chad Kroeger (NickleBack).

Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance/All-American Rejects)produces, but the album’s success lays firmly on the shoulders and the writing credit and contributions of daughtry himself. Not bad for a young bald dude with horrible sideburns.

baba o riley | 1/24/2007, 4:08 pm EST

in other, more important news, the ex-basist for social distortion was hit by a truck and killed on January 18th.

Thanks for nothing rolling stone.

Lester Bangs | 1/24/2007, 4:11 pm EST

To The Wiz,

your post was the single best post I have ever seen around here. Well done, please come back.

BUBBA | 1/24/2007, 4:21 pm EST

can this mornon sing without eyeliner?

Shelli | 1/24/2007, 4:46 pm EST

The Daughtry album is GREAT! Kudos to Chris for his writing ability and kick-ass vocals. They have gone PLATINUM and it is well deserved.

Stroke | 1/24/2007, 5:26 pm EST

Hey Lester Bangs. You’re a dumb ass. Daughtry sold 65K albums this week alone, not total. His album has been on the charts for 9 weeks and has probably sold over 2 million copies already. Moron.

pieceandluv60 | 1/24/2007, 6:35 pm EST

It just kills some people that Chris Daughtry is kicking ass. Dismal? How many records did you sell this week you freakin’ wannabe. I guess those who can’t write bitter columns for psuodo him ex-cool music magazines.

DAUGHTRY is hit and it’s just getting started. Number 1 video and record, not too shabby. Now go do something constructive today for craps sake.

pieceandluv60 | 1/24/2007, 6:39 pm EST

Yeah, there are mistakes in my last post…so sue me. You losers got the point.

cobracommander | 1/24/2007, 7:27 pm EST

I’ll bet that daughtry’s album is super sweet. I wouldn’t know though because I haven’t heard it. Hmm I wonder why on earth that is……..let’s seeeee……Oh yeah that’s right! HE’S FROM AMERICAN FUCCKKKINNGG IDDOLLL!!!!!! Please don’t patronize that fucking dogshit, please! It’s fucking wrong and will never be right…..ever.

Altrock4u | 1/24/2007, 8:01 pm EST

You naysayers are hysterical. Daughtry is the highest selling Rock debute since Soundscan began! If you opened your ears and shoved your preconceived notions where the sun doesn’t shine, you would find yourself pleasantly surprised. WHY?? Because the CD Rocks and there is not one lame song on the entire CD. But as most of the US is enjoying the CD and Daughtry is moving quickly towards double Platinum its all good. The few of you who do not want to “Get IT” its your loss.

DaughtryDays | 1/24/2007, 8:06 pm EST

Daughtry is the best CD to come out in years. It Rocks and every song is awesome.

Oh and I love the guyliner and sideburns. Smokin HOT HOT HOT that Chris Daughtry and an incredible singer and song writer. He sounds like no one else, looks like no one else and is better than everybody else.

Get USED TO seeing the Name and hearing him on the Charts and TV and EVERYWHERE

Lester Bangs | 1/24/2007, 8:32 pm EST

Hey Stroke, you stupid Fuck. NO SHIT you un-educated fuckin idiot. If you read my post you will understand. Fuck off and Die. I didn’t disrespect you “Daughtry” I simply stated that his sales are down. IT is not a great cd, it only has it’s idol demographic and maybe a few miwesterners. I didn’t dig at Chris at all. How do I know the CD in’t great? Well every critic from Rolling Stone to NME and revolver has panned it as a “regurgatated effort from a singer that sounds very much like a handful of others in todays rock”. Now go fuck yourself in a corner with your dunce cap on.

hahahahahaha | 1/24/2007, 8:34 pm EST

Hey Lester,

That was the best post I have ever read.

P.S.

Alway’s spell check when you post and are pissed

hahahah great post dude.

Jeff Frost | 1/24/2007, 8:49 pm EST

That uninspiring crap has topped the Billboard charts with sales of less than 70,000 the last three weeks in a row is neither depressing nor alarming.

It’s fucking awesome.

Clearly denial, lawsuits, and bland music are not viable strategies to win over the consumer. As one of your current articles points out, the days of the diva are probably going to be a thing of the past.

Record companies are going to have to get used to making less money and putting more rights in the hands of the artists as well as promoting truly innovative quality acts and embracing technology. The artists are going to have to be willing cut their egos down to size and put in more leg work if they want a career in music.

Terry McBride, CEO of Nettwork Records, has the right idea, check out this article from wired if you’d like to read about a record label man that *gasp* embraces technology and file sharing: http://www.wired.com/wire d/arc hive/14.09/nettwerk_pr.html

B URN BABY BURN.

DaughtryFan1 | 1/24/2007, 9:40 pm EST

The Daughtry CD is going to end up being an epic CD that goes down in History as one of the greats! One listen and you will all feel the same.

Gary Powell | 1/24/2007, 9:46 pm EST

If you think Daughtry is great, wait until you hear Sundance Head. He could easily be the best singer ever on American Idol.

zephyr | 1/24/2007, 9:46 pm EST

Wiz,Bubba and Lester what idiots you sound like. First of the Daughtry CD is Platinum. Because of your wee itty bitty brains this me a hell of a lot more than 65,000. As for the RS review, that ass didn’t listen and faked a review. Now he looks like a fool just like you three.

Next time listen to the CD, make valid comments so you are not so laughable.

Ender | 1/24/2007, 9:47 pm EST

DaughtryDays
“He sounds like no one else”

Is this the only CD you have ever heard in your life because the fact is he sounds like everyboby else? That is the problem.

Please, the guy was discoverd via a karaoke contest, has recycled generic hard rock sounds that are derivitive of Nickelback, Creed, and Fuel (bands already lacking in originality).

This guy is beyond unoriginal and only at a time when mainstream music is so bland would this rubbish rise to the top.

Do yourself a favor and try a little harder to find decent rock music.

zephyr | 1/24/2007, 9:49 pm EST

Gary Powell Oh yea sure just like Taylor Hicks was the winner. Sundance has a nice voice but who the hell really wants to hear that crappy style. Taylor Hicks is getting his ass kicked by Daughtry. America ROCKS!!!

zephyr | 1/24/2007, 9:52 pm EST

Endre Take the cotton out of your ears! Daughtry is in a similar style but he has a better tone, truer pitch and greater range than any of the bands you mention.

Get over how Chris was discovered and just be thankful he was.

While your at it go find some Absent Element.

Gosh you snots are so boring!

Ender | 1/24/2007, 10:21 pm EST

Zephyr that is just it, how he was discovered is the only way to explain a mediocre songwriter getting the type of exposure he is getting. I’ll grant the fact that he has a great voice but the music is just sub par at best.

This album sounds sterile; safe and predictable. Just the way an album would sound that was recorded by a guy with a good voice, written by a bunch of sub par songwriters with input from said artist, and a bunch of studio musicians.

Dolly Dagger | 1/24/2007, 11:04 pm EST

Chris Daughtry is the best rock singer since Paul Rodgers. Why don’t you get rid of your snobbish attitude about American Idol, and LISTEN to this guy? He is the real thing. Rolling Stone needs to get back to rock & roll instead of the pretentious boring subjects and people it now covers.I am disgusted with the people you choose to feature in your magazine. How dare you speak disrespectfully of Chris and his music when you put Britney Spears and Snoop Dogg on your cover? Open your mind and your ears.

Dolly Dagger | 1/24/2007, 11:09 pm EST

Chris Daughtry is the best rock singer since Paul Rodgers. Why don’t you drop your pretentious attitude about American Idol and LISTEN to this guy? He is the real thing. And I’d much rather see him on your cover than people like Britney Spears and Snoop Dogg, who have nothing do with rock & roll, which I thought was the basis for your now-boring magazine.

Dolly Dagger | 1/24/2007, 11:15 pm EST

Why don’t you drop your pretentious attitude towards American Idol and LISTEN to Chris Daughtry, who is the greatest rock singer I’ve heard in years. How dare you speak disrespectfully of him when you feature people like Britney Spears and Snoop Dogg on your covers? What do they have to do with rock & roll? Isn’t that what your magazine was originally based on? Chris will be around long after they’re gone.

Jen | 1/25/2007, 1:45 am EST

Yeah…. this Cd definitely sucks ass. That’s why the stores are having trouble keeping it in stock. That’s why the single is climbing the charts, the CD went platinum in record time and it’s kicking the hell out of everything else on the charts. Yep… definitely major suckage there. Someone call Dirt Devil and see if they wanna sponsor the tour… which, by the way, is also selling out within minutes. Yep… none of us have any taste whatsoever. We’re all just a bunch of sheep supporting whatever slop the Idol machine churns out. Baaaaaaaaaaaaaa Thanks Rolling Stone, you sure do have your finger on the pulse of American…. must be a big hand, cause your thumb is clearly up your ass.

zephyr | 1/25/2007, 7:13 am EST

Ender, I so disagree. The debute CD is probably less rocking than Chris would like because of the control Clive had over the project. In concert, all songs are kicked up a notch and ROCK HARD. Mr. Daughtry is a better than good song writer and if you go listen to Absent Element his prior band you will learn this.

There is nothing sterle about the CD. It is only those like yourself who want to stimgmtize Chris because of AI that are nasty. The CD is flying off the shevles and metalheads like myself are loving it. I do not watch AI and think Taylor Hicks is a joke. But Chris Daughtry is a rad singer. Wait till he can cut the strings with Clive and then listen to the 2nd cd.

Chris is a rocker in the Alternative vein and you will need to eat crow

Let’s review:

*DAUGHTRY debut/opening on Super Tuesday competed with Jay-Z, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, and others and did incredibly well.

* DAUGHTRY has the fastest selling Rock Debut in Soundscan History

* DAUGHTRY is #1 on The Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart

* DAUGHTRY is the first rock band release in nearly 20 years to hit the top spot after debuting below #1 in the Top 10

*DAUGHTRY #1 Debut on VH1

*DAUGHTRY is on their way to a sold out tour.

How I really miss the old Rolling Stone. You know, the one that wrote great commentaries instead of lowering themselves to snarky remarks.

ANYONE THAT BUYS ANYTHING CONNECTED WITH AMERICAN DOL IS AN IDIOT!

mike t | 1/25/2007, 8:47 am EST

Black Eyed Peas is in no way hip hop, it crappy kiddy-pop for retards. Their Bridging the Gap album is actually pretty good, blame Fergie for making them shit!

boo boo | 1/25/2007, 10:41 am EST

Now i know we are living in a Mad,Mad,Mad if this asshole is topping the charts!!!

Dave | 1/25/2007, 11:15 am EST

Jake – you learned to spell where?!

Carts | 1/25/2007, 11:37 am EST

Chris Daughtry can’t sing rock worth a shit. The best rock singer in the last 20 years is Chad Kroeger from Nickleback. They’re the best band too.

Lyoness | 1/25/2007, 11:39 am EST

Alpha where did the Old Rolling Stone go??? I have been wondering that for years? NO WONDER I NO LONGER SUBSCRIBE! It is garbage now. They should be writing articles about Daughtry championing his BREAKING the Idol mold and Rocking Hard.

But I guess I am not alone with not reading RS cause their snarkiness is not hurting Daughtry’s sales. LOL RS can not even get their facts correct. It is not 65,000 sold but 1,265,786 sold. The 65,000 was one week.

jake you poor limited soul, the best thing you could do would be pick up the CD. It is awesome but if you want to sit in a cornor and lament how Chris was discovered, enjoy the lonelyness.

crock rock | 1/25/2007, 11:42 am EST

OK…Here is what American Idol does, I would never have listened to this type of music had I not watched AI. AI has grown from just a pop contest into the new American variety show, much like the Ed Sullivan show was, exposing us to different styles of music. I walked into my local independent music store to purchase a copy of the Beatle’s LOVE on drop day and there was DAUGHTRY right next to it.I liked Chris on AI so I said what the hell and purchased both. Now is it the best example of this genre of music..Hell I don’t know, just know that after a few listens I was hooked, not one track I skip over. So thanks to AI for exposing me to music that I never would have given a chance before and hoping this year it might do the same.

Kerry1122 | 1/25/2007, 11:50 am EST

THE ALBUM IS AMAZING!!! DO NOT DISS OUR MAN! (MOSTLY IT’S JEALOUSY?) HEHE. WHOO AT NUM ONE!!!

Ender | 1/25/2007, 11:59 am EST

Zephyr, if you are right, I’ll be the first to admit it. Seriously. And I’ll concede the fact you could be right. The guy has enough sucess now to cut strings and do his own thing. If it is good, I’ll admit I was wrong.

The last thing I’ll say though is just because this guy is selling does not mean he is good. Spice Girls sold alot of records as did Limp Bizkit. Should we then assume they are the best to offer in each genre.

Enough said. My opinion should have no bearing on music others find enjoyable but I would be remiss if I did not express it.

Keela65 | 1/25/2007, 12:36 pm EST

This CD is absolutely amazing! I’m sorry if you at Rolling Stone have a problem with someone coming off of AI and doing so well. We, his fans, are thrilled. And apparently we aren’t the only ones. This debut album has already sold platinum. That’s over 1 MILLION copies (actually 1.3 or there abouts)and now they are at the top of not just one of the Billboard charts, but several. VH1 top 20…#1. Come on, give them a break and some recognition. I will
forever be a DAUGHTRY fan!!!

Jake Burns | 1/25/2007, 12:53 pm EST

Idol. I did misspell it. Whatever happened to the days when you played in smoky bars for years before you made it? American Idol blows. Clay Aiken? Rueben Stoddard? Paula Abdul? Randy Jackson? Simon Cowell? Kelly Clarkson? I’ll pass!

Admit I | 1/25/2007, 12:54 pm EST

Just because someone sells a lot of cds does not make them good.
AI is just another sad example of crap pushed on a brain dead public.

Jacob | 1/25/2007, 1:40 pm EST

I think most of you people have missed the point. the comments above do not say anything negative about chris daughtry. It’s just stating that it’s sad that the record indusrty is in such a slump, that the number one album on the charts only sold 65,000 this week. geez. quit being so sensitive people.

paul | 1/25/2007, 4:49 pm EST

If you think sales are bad now, imagine if music videos didn’t exist. No one would buy the crap that comes out now just oh hearing it. Half the stuff sold is for the sexy videos, not any music.

cobracommander | 1/25/2007, 5:59 pm EST

Daughtry being # 1 reaffirms my notion that chicks in general have a shitty taste in music. In fact our whole country in general has a shitty taste in music. The majority of America is quite fucked up. American Idol is the #1 rated show, Daughtry is #1 album, and George Dubya was voted our president. There’s a connection of shittyness there.

J.R. | 1/25/2007, 7:08 pm EST

I think Daughtry is bogus.

cara elizabeth | 1/25/2007, 8:00 pm EST

Chris Daughtry is crap.
So is the rest of American Idle.

BJOVI | 1/26/2007, 2:11 am EST

I think that Daughtry’s album is totally awesome! One of the great things about it is that there is not one bad song on the album, and everyone of them could easily be #1 hits. For those that are choosing to pre-judge the album simply because Chris was on American Idol, all I can is that you’re the one’s that are missing out, and if that’s what you choose to do then so be it, but you can expect to see and hear a lot more from Chris and his band cause they are not going away. This is the Year of Daughtry!!

Betty | 1/26/2007, 10:07 am EST

Crackheads.

nurses6969 | 1/26/2007, 4:05 pm EST

Well I for one LOVE the CD. It is so Chris. Shame that a vertain site has to invade rolling stone spouting thier negativity. Chris is the only album worth buying from AI. He is selling well bc many like his music. You think the Chris fans from AI are the only ones buying the cd? NO!!!!!. Get a grip get a life and move on to someone else to bash

nurses6969 | 1/26/2007, 4:10 pm EST

We should worry about what is said here why? After all wasnt snoop dogg on the cover a few weeks back. That is rock right?????Lamers

Jeff | 1/31/2007, 10:25 pm EST

I think daughtry is a great singer! I hope to see more by him

Yourmom | 2/5/2007, 2:34 pm EST

Jake.. you seem to know quite a bit about Idol, considering you hate it so bad.. you friggin douche bag.

Sheena | 2/8/2007, 3:15 pm EST

I listened and I pass, I think I will spend my money on the guy who could really sing with Masterclass talent.. Elliott Yamin .. He has a CD coming out March 20th.. Then I will definitely get my monies worth!

Drew | 2/23/2007, 2:14 pm EST

Listen to Chris’s previous band before he went on Idol…Absent Element. Same voice, harder rock. And yes he did play in small bars, and small venues back then before the national exposure. When Ed Sullivian, or Dick Clark had a “local” or “up-and-comer” on their show, sometimes they became big and sometimes they didn’t. It was up to the public to choose the quality of the music. The only difference now is that AI is a “competition” with eliminations. Otherwise, it is a national audience to get in front of for those with undiscovered talent. Had Chris come out before Nickleback, some of the comments would be reversed. He will be around for a long time.

Michele | 7/1/2008, 11:59 am EST

It’s cool to come back here after 1 1/2 years to report that DAUGHTRY has sold over 4 million :)

WR | 8/10/2008, 12:33 pm EST

let’s just slap nickelbac or puddle of mudd on the cover

boring
unfufilling
you haven’t heard real music
no imaginative lyrics
no original thought

nobody looks for music anymore
they turn on the TV or Radio
and accept what’s there

i despise this band and have to dread hearing it at work and on lame top 40 radio

numbers do lie
they are many people who buy better music and make better music

no soul in the popular culture
