Anyone without a healthy fear of Chrissie Hynde and Patti Smith is an idiot. These women are formidable rock icons who’ve built their lives on hard work, attitude and savvy. And if you’re a whiney would-be rockstar or a cleavage bearing pop tart we’d recommend going into hiding (or at least investing in one of those swank panic rooms) because you’ve pissed these women off and wherever you are you aren’t safe.
In an interview published last week, Patti Smith pondered the plight of today’s struggling bands, declaring that their problem is a lack of work ethic, and suggesting that free time is an artists’ worst enemy. “When people come up to me and say, ‘Patti, nobody wants to hear my CD and I don’t have enough money for equipment,’ I say, ‘Well, get a job,’ ” Smith explains. “You do babysitting jobs, you work in the factory, you work in the bookstore or become a pickpocket. Work is really good for an artist.” (Canadian indie rockers: That means no more year off from art school spent writing shitty poetry, wrangling a triangle-playing role in Arcade Fire and otherwise expanding your mind).
Meanwhile, veteran feminist punk rocker Chrissie Hynde is after today’s female stars, many of whom she sees as nothing but cheap provocateurs. “Remember you’re in a rock and roll band,” she commands. “It’s not fuck me; it’s fuck you!” (Totally).
Should these two teach a class or do you think they are out of line?
