Lunchtime Poll: Banish That Song

1/22/07, 11:52 am EST

Quad City DJ's
You are in charge of the airwaves. In addition to putting Howard Stern back in every American household and nixing all car dealership ads, you’re doing some playlist editing. One wave of your editorial wand and no one will ever have to hear Quad City DJ’s “C’mon N Ride It (The Train)” ever again. What song would you have permanently erased from the radio?

[Thanks to Jim for inspiring this Lunchtime Poll]

So many choices… I won’t shoot ducks in a barrel and say anything by Nickelback, I’ll instead go with “Shiny Happy People” by REM.

booggit | 1/22/2007, 12:10 pm EST

“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”…gad, and it even won a Grammy for Song of the Year!

girl at work | 1/22/2007, 12:14 pm EST

I’d get rid of crossover country – it should stay on the country stations where it belongs.

jandek | 1/22/2007, 12:19 pm EST

all old dinosaur rock…such as led zepplin….so sick of zepplin. get them off the radio…also get rid of 99% of all eagles songs. rush, yes, and crappy prog bands like such. keep the gap bands drop a bomb on me…that song is awesomely bad….and of course play more frank stallones far from over and nick drake

jill hives | 1/22/2007, 12:24 pm EST

what kinda jack-oaf still listens to the radio to begin with?

david h | 1/22/2007, 12:25 pm EST

brown eyed girl in any carnation

Jon | 1/22/2007, 12:32 pm EST

I will shoot ducks in a barrel. Nickelback and Staind would be banished.

And way to go, RS, for still thinking that Howard Stern is awesome. Nice to see you dating yourself so severely.

Sanchez | 1/22/2007, 12:37 pm EST

Bryan Adams….Gone

likroper.com | 1/22/2007, 1:04 pm EST

the song ‘renegade’ by styx – i’m sick sick sick of it…beyond sick…

Betty | 1/22/2007, 1:08 pm EST

anything from 106.1 long island radio station, i can’t stand it anymore. They play the SAME songs every single hour, there are soooooo many more songs out there that are totally better.

Jim | 1/22/2007, 1:12 pm EST

I NEVER want to hear:
“Old Time Rock N Roll” by Bob Seger
“Taking Care of Business” by BTO, or on commercials
“Centerfield” by John Fogerty, everytime a news show talks about baseball season
“Money For Nothing” Dire Straits (had an ass full of this song)

T-Crash | 1/22/2007, 1:37 pm EST

“Iron Man” by Black Sabbath. Is there a reason it is played six times every damn hour on classic rock radio? Not necessarily Sabbath’s fault…as it IS a good song…but if I hear “I am Iron Man!”…one more time…

Hadrian | 1/22/2007, 1:40 pm EST

Anything by James Blunt or Mika, but especially Blunt.

Kari | 1/22/2007, 1:41 pm EST

Anything by Ted Nugent….oh, and Lips Of An Angel by Hinder or anything by Hinder, really.

? | 1/22/2007, 1:44 pm EST

Beautiful Day by U2. I hate everything about it. Bono cannot sing.

bilo | 1/22/2007, 1:55 pm EST

money – Pink Floyd

J-Roo | 1/22/2007, 1:57 pm EST

Stairway to Heaven… duh.

Much like Jingle Bells, it’s lost all meaning at this point.

jacob i | 1/22/2007, 2:00 pm EST

Anything from AC/DC. I agree, “Beautiful Day” should go as well

Heidi the Mountaingirl | 1/22/2007, 2:01 pm EST

Anything by Phil Collins… Every Girlpop rubbish,
Lily fucking Allen should be banned and executed for brainpollution

bike lock | 1/22/2007, 2:23 pm EST

first off, if you get rid of come n ride this train now, I will wave a wand to bring it back.

Then I am going to destroy that song “I call that a bargaaaaaain, the best I’ve ever had…” If ever get my hands around the throat of the little weasel who shoved that infuriating number into a truck commercial, his eyes will bulge, he’ll never breathe again. I’ll tear his house to shreds and punch his neighbors arbitrarily.

jetaspirin | 1/22/2007, 2:27 pm EST

any bob seger song…ban him.
get rid of journey too…i don’t know how they’ve made a resurgence in the last year…

Jerry Cramer | 1/22/2007, 2:28 pm EST

anything by Journey!

Ouroboros | 1/22/2007, 2:32 pm EST

I would erase reggaeton not only from radio, but from the memory of all human beings. For those of you lucky enough not to know what’s reggaeton, it’s Daddy Yankee and all that crap. Can’t wait for it to die.

BB | 1/22/2007, 2:43 pm EST

“Morning Train” by Sheena Easton
“I’m crazy mad for him and he’s crazy mad for me” UhGGG!!!! If I EVER hear it again it will be too soon.

Your Lord and Audioslave | 1/22/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Top Ten:
1) Smells Like Teen Spirit
2) We Didn’t Start the Fire
3) Go for a Soda (Kim Mitchell – the welfare bum of Can-con rules)
4) YMCA
5) that Robin Hood soundtrack song by Bryan Adams, Sting and Rod Stewart
6) Under Pressure
7) Tom Sawyer (Rush)
8) Come Together/Imagine tie (ever notice that no one who worships Lennon actually LISTENS to Lennon? Beatles-loving baby-boomers are all a bunch of republican-voting establishment robot hypocrites who could give two shits about world peace as long as they got their mid-life crisis sportscars, RSPs and retirement properties paid up. Hippies on the outside, Reaganites on the inside!)
9) My Immortal
10) In a Gadda Da Vida (is this even played on the radio? Even if not, I’d still like to erase it from existence altogether.)

I don’t listen to terrestrial commercial rock stations (and yes, I am better than you because of that.) I get my audio culture from satellite radio, CBC Radio Two, my iPod and podcasts.

Melissa | 1/22/2007, 2:52 pm EST

I know everyone loves the Rolling Stones and at one time I adored Jumpin Jack Flash, Satifaction, and Brown Sugar but to tell you the truth I am sick sick sick of the old Rolling Stones Songs and Riffs. I do love them BUT – how much can a person take….40 years of ” I can’t get no ” has left me disatisfied for sure. I have been listening to the same old same old…for WAY too long. I would ban Rolling Stones for at least 5 years. And while I was at it, I’d get rid of anything by REO Speedwagon, Rush, Styx, Pink Floyd, Linda Ronstadt, and The WHO. I am super sick of The Who, how many “LAST” tours have those idiots had…My Generation and Tommy are so overplayed and ridiculous that if I never heard it again, I’d be happy. BTW – I am never sick of The Beatles, the Doors, or Jimi Hendrix.

Coyt | 1/22/2007, 3:11 pm EST

Put all the Coldplay in a vault, along with all their mopey fans, and lock it up.

likroper.com | 1/22/2007, 3:11 pm EST

hey melissa, are you the melissa i’m thinking of?…

... | 1/22/2007, 3:24 pm EST

Anything by Nickelback, all their songs are basically the same tune (kinda country-ish) and just different lyrics, that annoys me sooooo bad. And all over-played hair metal crap music, Im sick of hearing that played on all of my rock stations avalible to me.

Bob | 1/22/2007, 3:29 pm EST

Sorry to go off topic, but nobody cares about your reality show. Please stop shoving it down peoples throats. Have you actually ever thought about the demographic of your readers? Trust me… they don’t watch MTV reality shows. Look at the ads in your magazine- Do you think they’re targeted to 14 year olds watching bland MTV reality shows? We know Jan Wenner is a narcisit and loves publicity of any kind, but please- just drop the online coverage.

jandek | 1/22/2007, 3:36 pm EST

yea get rid of the doors as well….my friend said it best steve perry is the true american poet NOT jim morrisson

FG | 1/22/2007, 3:41 pm EST

Any performer/group that has costume changes during live performances should be banned from radio – except Madonna.

myspace.com/15keys | 1/22/2007, 3:45 pm EST

Anything by Nickelback, my good they make my ears bleed, You also have to stop all ear rape by banning Fergie and the Pussycat dolls. Are they good to look at DAMN STRAIGHT but ill be damned if i let them fill my eardrums any more.

Jay | 1/22/2007, 4:09 pm EST

I live in milwaukee, and the rock radio plays 12 total songs, over and over. You all know the list: Enter Sandman, Smells like Teen Spirit, Black Dog, Rock N Roll, Back in Black, Alive, Jeremy, Black Hole Sun, Everything Zen, Won’t Get Fooled Again, Baba O Reilly, Shook me all night long (or whatever the title is). The radio stations here will occasionally play the songs in a different order, but they never change. I wish all of those songs would go away. Since that wont happen, I will not listen to the radio in Milwaukee, the worst town for radio in america.

shelly | 1/22/2007, 4:12 pm EST

gonna go with benny and the jets by elton
its a great song that got so overplayed i no longer like it

yo | 1/22/2007, 4:17 pm EST

how about lips of an agel and by the way i love shiny happy people by rem so go away and stop talking.

r from r | 1/22/2007, 4:18 pm EST

I second the votes for banning Styx, Journey, and REO, and let’s add Foreigner to that group. Did they ever write a song within Lou Gramm’s vocal range? Or perhaps he doesn’t have one…

P.S. The poster who trashed Lennon couldn’t be farther off-base. What reality is he/she/it living in?

Melissa | 1/22/2007, 4:20 pm EST

I don’t think I am the same Melissa – I don’t recognize you

jungleland | 1/22/2007, 4:30 pm EST

kill Fergie…please! (and how about the rest of those damn Peas!)

Radio | 1/22/2007, 5:26 pm EST

Just turn off your radio and smash it! Fire up your I-Pod or what ever you have, that will play the music you like.

I Am The Walrus | 1/22/2007, 5:34 pm EST

A little off topic, but we need to get that God-awful John Mellencamp song off TV. It makes my ears and my eyes bleed. Seriously, people. Get it off the air.

cobracommander | 1/22/2007, 6:10 pm EST

anything by mellancamp….in fact, Everything EXCEPT for Journey, Styx, REO, and Rush. THAT’s What I’m talkin’ BOUT!!!

musicJUNKIE | 1/22/2007, 6:45 pm EST

Andrew | 1/22/2007, 10:50 pm EST

Fall out Boy, Panic at the Disco, and Nickelback. All of them put out basically the same damm song every month in the same cookie cutter format. Targeting 14 year old girls will only get you so far..

bud wiser | 1/22/2007, 10:53 pm EST

dude looks like a lady by aerosmith – that band has SO MANY other great songs…

darkmansaad | 1/22/2007, 11:08 pm EST

Nickelback NICKELBACK………the worst band ever, EVER. There is a site out there where they play 2 nickelback songs in stereo one through your left one through your right speaker. Put on your headphones THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME!!!!

jesse | 1/22/2007, 11:33 pm EST

i agree with beautiful day, and am not a huge fan of u2, but sayin that bono can’t sing? are u outta your mind? his voice might not be what it used to be, but the man can still take down any of the young bands out there today

Gofrito | 1/22/2007, 11:40 pm EST

How to Save a Life, The Fray. How can asong that rhymes “right” with “right” and “hear you” with “hear you” not be subject to one of those V for Vendetta purges? Also Chains Hang Low, which will be the joke song of our generation complete with VH1 program.

Oh, and motherfucking Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

JD | 1/23/2007, 2:34 am EST

Anything by Nickelback, or like artists including the Calling, Default and Theory of a Dead Man.

Songs that should be banned now: Believe- Cher; The Reason- Hoobanstink; She’s So High- Tal Bachman; Clocks- Coldplay; Smooth- Santana and Rob Thomas; actually Lonely No More and Unwell too. Sick of all those songs.

Anonymous2 | 1/23/2007, 7:30 am EST

Anything with Gwen Stefani, she’s just fashion (not music). And bad fashion.

jebby | 1/23/2007, 8:29 am EST

Banish all rap (music?) to third world countries. Take that Afghanistan!!!

BOOFIE | 1/23/2007, 8:52 am EST

SORRY TO SAY THIS BUT BANISH ANY MUSIC FROM 1980 TILL NOW…. IT IS ALL CRAP

oh yeah | 1/23/2007, 9:09 am EST

I don’t know if it’s played on the radio but that song in those car commercials that goes:”I like to live on the edge-a.” That song just makes me want to rip out my ear drums.

Taltos1667 | 1/23/2007, 10:31 am EST

Ban Top 40 Classic Rock radio and bring back Classic AOR radio, album tracks that weren’t hits but actually pushed the music envelope.

Buster C | 1/23/2007, 12:00 pm EST

Any song written by some one who would ban some one elses music, my God you people are stuffy!

dee | 1/23/2007, 12:44 pm EST

All Phil Collins especially the remakes of songs he does… and all Kelly Clarkson..Im so sick of the fact that shes afraid to cross the street already! Also Lips of an Angel..Im sick of that cheating bastard…anyone who knocks Bono ought to get a friggin clue

dee | 1/23/2007, 12:46 pm EST

Also just take the whole crapping playlist of Miami’s own Big 105.9 in fact ALL clear Channel crap stations!! Its always the same song 24 hrs a day!!

Shady Hoboken | 1/23/2007, 12:55 pm EST

99% of all Eagles songs is a good call. Also, 99% of Doors and Pink Floyd songs.

yehaw | 1/23/2007, 4:16 pm EST

As much as I love Skynyrd, i cannot stand to hear sweet home alabame

also that shitastic third single by p!atd, it the most perverted song ever

BTW- they made a country song off of lips of an angel, it made me puke shit

Lobsters | 1/23/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Everything by The Eagles must GO! And no more Pink Floyd, Thank You. And once he finishes his farewell tour, Bob Seger is over! Tom Petty – Forget his dead ass. Billy Joel? Either stop playing his records or kill him (I wouldn’t mind having to put up with his records, if you know what I mean). And, worst of all – Anything from Bruce Springsteen’s fuckin’ “Born In The USA”. What a load of shit!

geoff | 1/23/2007, 5:53 pm EST

all who said ban zeppelin(jandek it has a e in it) screw u. ban that emo shit

16 clumsy + shy | 1/23/2007, 6:34 pm EST

God, so many…..London Bridge is what comes to mind first…. probably THE worst song I’ve ever heard in my life. And Daniel Powter should just get a tumor in his fucking THROAT. Oh, and Lips of an Angel? I think I’m gonna cry.
I’m fine with emo. But country and pop? ALL OF IT!! BE GONE!!!!!

cheesecrop | 1/23/2007, 7:29 pm EST

Leave most of GNR’s stuff alone, but ban all the 10 minute “November Rain” type stuff off the Illusion albums.

As for the rest of it, I don’t think I would want to ban, so much as curtail it. Add at least three songs every hour on radio from artists who are either non-mainstream or else commercial artist album cuts. This might cause less pain on tired ears. Despite what you hear radio can still be saved.

Carmine O'Dell | 1/25/2007, 1:50 am EST

Anything by Celine Dion, , Styx, Air Supply, Barry Manilow, Rod Stewart, Wayne Newton, Tom Jones, solo Gwen Stefani, Black Eyed Peas, N’Sync, Backstreet Boys, Vanilla Ice, Mc Hammer, Ton Loc, Nick Lachey, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears….anything on Top 40 Urban today or Top 40 Pop radio in the last 20 years basically. The Grease Soundtrack. Also any music on a soundtrack of a movie starring Patrick Swayze, Corey Feldman, Erik Estrada or Ralph Macchio.

Alfred | 1/25/2007, 12:13 pm EST

Any song by the floolwing bands should be purged from radios playlists-

Creed
Nickleback
H inder
Fergie
CCR
BTO
Bob Seger

GordonW | 1/25/2007, 6:02 pm EST

“Turn Me Loose,” Loverboy. I hadn’t heard it in years, until yesterday, on a Vancouver, B.C. classic rock station. The military probably could use it, at high volume, to force suspects out of houses.

sassy2180 | 1/27/2007, 4:39 pm EST

AC/DC- ALL
Queen- ALL
EVERY remake! except Cure Love Song redone by 311

miccc | 1/31/2007, 8:06 pm EST

Styxx, Foreigner, Nickelback, Rush, Journey, REO Speedwagon, and so many more. Play more of Zeppelin’s lesser known songs and give some of the others time to breathe. Zep.are one of the very few bands that keep me listening to radio at all.

Will H. | 2/6/2007, 10:16 pm EST

James Blunt sucks. Styx is a joke. Rush (lets all have a moment of laughter).. any of the newer punk and rap is awful.. just ban mtv and we’ll be all set

D.C. | 6/14/2007, 11:04 pm EST

KILL NELLY FURTADO!!!!
