Joss Stone Previews New Songs in Toronto

1/22/07, 5:10 pm EST

British soul singer Joss Stone previewed eleven songs from her forthcoming album, Introducing Joss Stone, at a last-minute concert Saturday night at Toronto’s The Docks. Stunning in a flowing dress and pink-streaked locks, the 19-year-old with the Aretha Franklin pipes hit the stage to give the audience a taste of her new material. Backing her up was an eleven-piece soul/funk band featuring Raphael Saadiq (who produced Stone’s upcoming album) on guitar, plus two of James Brown’s horn players and three back-up singers. For much of the set, Stone acted the part of charming, outspoken teenager, skipping around the stage barefoot, blowing glitter on the crowd, giggling and dropping the odd f-bomb. The music, then, stood in sharp contrast to the giddy, smiling girl onstage. Whether easing in to a slow, sultry number or guiding her band through a funk-infused groove, Stone’s music was, as always, a sophisticated — and very adult — throwback to Sixties soul. And if her between-song banter was any indication, the young singer is no music biz innocent. Recounting a story about her label telling her she “got no hits,” Stone introduced the spirited, percussive “Put Your Hands On Me” by saying, “The only reason why I wrote it was because they were doin’ my fuckin’ head in. So thank you Virgin Records!” The singer revealed that Lauryn Hill would be rapping on the album version of “Music” — a song about rediscovering her passion for her art — before launching into the track and tackling the rap duties herself. It was a flawed — if unavoidable — move: owing to her white-girl flow, the song took on the tone of a Fergie out-take. The first single, “Tell Me About It,” a sunny, up-tempo melody, might well have been the least impressive of the new songs. Highlights of hour-long show were the soul-baring ballad “What Were We Thinking,” and the poppy kiss-off song “I Wish” (in which Stone spews sassy lines like “You’re gonna go fuck with my head,” “I finally had enough of your shit” and “I shoulda left your ass a long time ago”). Introducing Joss Stone hits stores March 20th.

The lyrics featuring expletives is a real turn off for me. So much for her being a role model.

Beautiful and barefoot, nothing wrong with that or a few well placed f-bombs now and then. Especially when it’s coming out of those pipes.
