Playlist of the Day: Oil’s Cheaper — Gas, Not So Much

1/19/07, 8:00 am EST

Oil, crude, barrelCrude dropped below $50 a barrel for the first time since May 2005, yet gas is still $2.20 a gallon. We’re not saying it’s corporate greed…but our stereo is.

  • “Black Gold” — Soul Asylum
  • “Running on Empty” — Jackson Browne
  • “Out of Gas” — Modest Mouse
  • “Tiger in your Tank” — Muddy Waters
  • “Profiteers” — Midnight Oil

We meed to stop bitching about what we pay for gas…Europe pays at least double! The sooner we get off gas the better…we could have the whole country converted to ethanol in 5 years just by using the corn waste we already have.

Instead of oil companies and terrorist funding maniacs getting rich, America’s farmers could be the ones. Come on America!! Ethanol, call your congressman now!!!

The Booky | 1/19/2007, 11:59 am EST

I bought gas last night for $1.89. That is the cheapest I have seen it in Indiana for a long time, hopefully it will continue to go down. Its sad that we have to celebrate when it is still so expensive, but I wont complain about it.

I agree, we get off easy on gas prices compared to Europe — Norway this summer was over $6 a gallon, and they’re a massive oil producer — but their high taxes go to support universal social programs. We pay more so more money can go into corporate fatcat pockets. How can the fact that people can barely afford to commute to work anymore while oil company CEOs smile and publicize record-breaking profits not be downright criminal? String ‘em up!

Europe pays more for gas because THEY DON’T PRODUCE ANY. For as much oil as the US produces we should be paying 10 freaking cents a gallon. But that would make some CEOs a little less rich.

Gas is like 2.55 here in Seattle (and that is in the burbs) it is like 2.75 in downtown

Blinked | 1/19/2007, 5:48 pm EST

Either the U.S. should start using its own oil supply or develop another energy source that is practical and affordable to the American taxpayer. Either way, this gas thing is so sad and pathetic. Here’s the play list.

typical 1 sided liberal arguement. Gas here is ~$2/gal … almost exactly what it was in May ‘05

Bizaro Glen F | 1/19/2007, 6:10 pm EST

Hey Glen, quit letting facts get in the way of a good story

B | 1/19/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Europe is at the mercy of the middle east, russia, and in part US. We on the other hand are not.

Crude oil is at the same price it was when gas was $1.59 a gallon here in Nevada. Are we saying that gas has gotten that much more expensive to produce in the last four years. Not even technology affords that kind of inflation.

BTW, to ‘Glen F’, I’m glad you’re still supporting partisanship, because that has worked, hasn’t it? Oh, and the $2 you’re paying, how much lower do you think that’d be if ExxonMobil wasn’t purposely overcharging everyone else to raise their profits? Capitalism cheats you by people cheating it.
