UPDATED: Mamas and the Papas Singer Dead at 66

1/19/07, 5:42 pm EST

Mamas and the PapasDenny Doherty, an original member of 1960’s sunshine pop group The Mama’s & The Papa’s who sang lead on a number of the band’s hits, died of an aneurysm in his abdomen January 19th at his home in Mississuaga Ontario. He was sixty-six. “He was one of the greatest tenors in rock and roll,” says his former bandmate Michelle Phillips.

In 1963 Doherty met Cass Elliott, who was so impressed by his soaring voice she hired him to sing in her group The Big Three. That group also soon folded, but both Elliott and Doherty were quickly hired to sing in John and Michelle Phillips’ new band The Magic Circle — which changed its name to The Mama’s & The Papa’s when it signed to Dunhill Records in September 1965. The group went to Number Four on the Billboard Hot 100 with their first single “California Dreamin” and instantly established group as one of the premier vocal bands of the mid 1960s.

Successful singles such as “Monday, Monday,” “Creeque Alley,” and “Dream A Little Dream” soon followed. Almost immediately, however, the group was plagued by internal problems. In 1965 Doherty had an affair with Michelle, who was married to bandleader John Phillips. Michelle was briefly replaced. When she returned both to the group and to John, Doherty began drinking heavily. The group limped on — and in the summer of 1967 played The Monterey International Pop Festival, which they helped organize — but they broke up soon after.

Later, Doherty tried his hand at acting, appearing on Broadway in the 1974 play “The Man In The Moon.” In 1982 he and John Phillips formed a new Mama’s and Papa’s with John’s daughter Mackenzie Phillips and toured off and on throughout the decade. In 2001, he premiered the acclaimed musical “Dream A Little Dream” in Toronto in which he recounted his life story and performed from the Mamas and Papas catalog.

Doherty had suffered from an undisclosed illness — from which family and friends had expected him to make a full recovery — just before his death. “He was probably the least known member of the Mamas and Papas, who sang most of the hits,” Michelle Phillips says. “All I can say is I had the great fortune to have been able to sing with him and call him my friend.”

part of my past and my future has left with denny’s voice. how does someone of my generation get on when the lists of voices silenced gets longer than there is time to greive.

OZZY SIEKIER | 2/1/2007, 10:59 pm EST

I played keyboards in the Denny Doherty Band that was in Connecticut in 1975. Denny was the finest singer Ive ever known and worked with and was one of the funniest persons that ever walked this planet. Im still shocked and very sad that hes gone. I will miss him. Pictures of the Denny Doherty Band can be sent from my email: ozmotopper777@yahoo.com

Before anyone gets my spelling mistakes twisted, promptly blame the library computers(smiles).

charliemapleton | 1/22/2007, 2:54 pm EST

Not to say he was an inspiration to me,but peace, harmony, and equality were the manin themes in their music.I know there were some trying times for or brothas and sistas back in the ’60’s Leroy, but that was a low blow-especially for someone that recently passed.

charliemapleton | 1/22/2007, 12:21 pm EST

WHAT?!He seemed to be inspirational, more so giving fans and listeners that ultra, mellow AM rock satisfaction. How so,Leroy?

Leroy | 1/22/2007, 12:12 pm EST

He was a racist honky cracker.

charliemapleton | 1/22/2007, 11:35 am EST

One of the founders of one of the most catchy, righteously spiritual groups of all time-may God rest his soul.

ADRIENNE PATIERNO | 1/22/2007, 9:33 am EST

NOT ONLY COULD HE SING, BUT HE WAS VERY FUNNY, ESPECIALLY WHEN TALKING OF THE DAYS OF THE MAMAS AND PAPAS.

I COULD SEE WHY MAMMA CASS WAS IN LOVE WITH HIM AND MAMMA MICHELLE WAS IN LUST WITH HIM.

GIVE A BIG HALO TO DENNY UP THERE IN THE CLOUDS.

Cherylle | 1/21/2007, 7:27 pm EST

It was sad to hear this…I met Denny many years ago when he was in a band with one of my friends in Milford, CT. They played in a few clubs in Conn. and we had some really great times with Denny. And yes they did sing all the Mama and Papas’ songs at every gig. It was great and he will be sadly missed. Rest in peace, Denny!!!

George Myers | 1/21/2007, 6:39 pm EST

Many younger people will miss him as the “Harbor-master” on the PBS show and his euphonium he seemed to about play. Mississauga is also a very dangerous snake.

Wayne | 1/21/2007, 2:55 pm EST

I was in the midst of the ’60s scene. When I listen to their music the nostalgia for a simpler time floods my memories. We lived during a time of social transformation and anti war (Viet Nam) … it was a time like none other for our generation.

Gramatt | 1/21/2007, 2:30 pm EST

I remember being in the Fosters Freeze in Mtn. View, Ca. listenig to Ca. dreaming for the 1st. time. I was in the 4th grade. I was cool-I knew all the words. m&ps put Ca.on the map. rip

jimmy barron | 1/21/2007, 12:53 pm EST

I think that the Mamas and Papas album brings back so many memories, and that I along with my friends probably wore the grooves out listening so many times to their wonderful harmonies and great rhythm section that backed them up. I have this album on my ipod. rest in peace Denny.

I would like to add that Denny also contributed to children’s television as the “Harbour Master” on “Theadore Tug Boat”. He was a great story teller as well as a great singer, and was able to make an impression on my young children that lasts to this day. I was sad to hear of his passing and hope that he rests in peace.

K36 | 1/21/2007, 2:49 am EST

I wasn’t born when The Mamas and the Papas first came on the music scene back in the 1960’s but I do like their music and I was sad to hear of Denny’s passing and what’s sad is that almost every one of them has passed on.God Bless You Denny. We’ll miss you.

Leslie | 1/20/2007, 11:47 pm EST

The Mamas and The Papas were one of the first bands I ever got into when I was younger; they really made me love music. They’re still one of my favorite groups.

Denny had the most beautiful voice, he really made their songs special.

It is truely sad that one of the icons of the psychedelic sixties is gone.

RIP Denny

bryan burchfield | 1/20/2007, 9:10 pm EST

Sixie | 1/20/2007, 8:20 pm EST

Being ONLY 42 years of age puts me in the middle of agentic people of the rolling stone editors and my most herendic readers of twenty- five and under who don’t have a clue what the chord A or C or even G is… Duhhhhhh But they are given access to write or presumptially donate a review of rock music? Sorry… Denny was a class act in vocal music and has been missed for a long ,long time… God Bless you Denny and your family. Sixie

RIP Denny, thanks for the music.

JD | 1/20/2007, 12:22 am EST

And then there was one, Mama Michelle. They were incredible singers, and if you want a great collection of their numerous best ofs, try “All the Leaves are Brown” which compiles their first four albums. All the hits are here.

JLI | 1/20/2007, 12:00 am EST

One of my earliest memories of music is hearing an 8 track my parents played when I was little. It was of the Mamas and Papas. Good start. Great harmonies, great singing, and great vibes. Thanks Denny!!

Claudio Casselli | 1/19/2007, 11:04 pm EST

Denny,we are going to miss you.

Joe | 1/19/2007, 10:48 pm EST

I was waiting to see people complain that there weren’t enough fluff pieces in RS, why are you covering music?

Thank you RS. You got it right on this one and James Brown.

IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!!

Liz | 1/19/2007, 10:36 pm EST

Nasty comments. Now I know why I turned my back on contemporary music 20 years ago. The whole attitude has turned into a bad stink. Say nothing if you can’t be a good person. The Mamas & Papas meant a great deal to millions of people, including me.

Thomaz Antônio de Freitas | 1/19/2007, 9:32 pm EST

Vá em paz Papa Denny. Com aqueles vocais dos anjos, certamente o céu está mais musical hoje!!!

Joe Puma | 1/19/2007, 9:07 pm EST

Denny Doherty was one of the great voices of rock music, and I put him up there with Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys as one of the most”unsung”heroes of 1960’s popular music.Always seemingly overshadowed by the charisma of his bandmates in the Mamas and the Papas,Denny’s beautiful tenor lent a certain magic and power to their music.Rest in peace,Mr.Doherty.I didn’t know ya but I love ya just the same.

ChasInBox | 1/19/2007, 8:12 pm EST

R.I.P. and all due respect, everyone screams about what a “soaring tenor” Doherty had. I disagree. When I was a kid and I heard the lead vocal to “Monday Monday”, I thought he sounded like he belonged singing jingles. The guy was pretty white bread, no grit, not much soul, didn’t write any songs, looked constipated when he sang. and drank his health away like so many once-amazing-now-pathetic 60s legends.

Pooneil | 1/19/2007, 7:56 pm EST

One of the great all-time vocal groups whose music contributed a lot to the soundtrack of my childhood. I never saw them in their original form but did catch the ’80s version, and it was almost eerie. Denny could still sing like an angel, and his considerable contribution to pop music history is much appreciated.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 1/19/2007, 7:16 pm EST

Denny Doherty’s gorgeous tenor was featured so magnificently on “Monday, Monday” - “I Saw Her Again Last Night” - California Dreamin’”, and their classic original, “You Baby”, to name just a few Mamas & Papas hit songs he sand lead on. He’s one of the most recognised greatest voices in Pop-Rock History and known by name mostly to some of the 60’s & 70’s generations. I’m blessed to own all their vinyl Lps, some 45’s and most of their Cds catalogue, plus their import box set “Anthology”. Denny’s great smile will forever be cherished on the group’s Dvd-video performances output. We’re all blessed to have been showered with a lot of happiness through the Mamas & Papas timeless music! Cass, John, Denny, Michelle - a HUGE Thank You!

TheRealCrystal | 1/19/2007, 6:59 pm EST

He will be missed.

Jimmy Pasta | 1/19/2007, 6:55 pm EST

I’m surprised to read about this in Rolling Stone, I didn’t know they still covered music.

likroper.com | 1/19/2007, 6:48 pm EST

i love that song california dreamin’…one of my faves…RIP papa denny!…

theworldsforgottenboy | 1/19/2007, 6:47 pm EST

Good One Jason…. Just wait till Art( I haven’t mattered for 35 years ) Garfunkel dies… RS will dedicate 3 entire issues…. Rs used to be great .. now it induces narcolepsy….

Jason | 1/19/2007, 6:34 pm EST

That was quick…it took you guys two days to acknowledge that James Brown had died.

Betta Recognize | 1/19/2007, 6:24 pm EST
