Kelly Clarkson Gets With NASCAR, Neil Young Shares Wealth, Fall Out Boy Play on Jock’s Turf

1/19/07, 2:07 pm EST

Kelly Clarkson

  • Kelly Clarkson’s long-time crush on NASCAR is finally being reciprocated. The pop-punk princess has just signed the biggest NASCAR endorsement deal ever by a musician, and she’s totally psyched. “Anyone who knows me knows I love NASCAR,” the singer said. “I look forward to hanging out with the fans, drivers and the entire NASCAR community.” A rep for the NASCAR company said they felt sure Clarkson and NASCAR would enjoy an “unparalleled relationship.” Creepy.
  • Hardcore Garbage fans (all four of you), be psyched: The band is reportedly busy recording new songs to be released as part of a best-of package.
  • Neil Young is giving up the goods in terms of archived releases. This fall the rocker will put out a box set of previously unreleased live and studio material, but before the boxset comes out Young will release Live at Massey Hall, which includes songs that were later released on Harvest.
  • Robbie Williams’ video for “She’s Madonna” is freaking hysterical. We have no desire to see this dude naked onstage at MSG, but we like him in drag.
  • We love Fall Out Boy. And on Sunday we are going to be loving them from the comfort of our own home while we watch them rock the halftime show at the Bears vs. Saints game played on Soldier Field in FOB’s hometown of Chicago. Sixteen-year-olds may be hoping for a well-designed wardrobe malfunction but we’ll be satisfied by the sight and sound of emo-pop infiltrating American football culture.
  • Legendary punks Bad Religion have a busy year ahead of them. They will apparently be releasing a new album in July, headlining the 2007 Vans Warped tour (dates here), and frontman Greg Graffin will be teaching “Life Science 1: Evolution and Biodiversity” at UCLA. Seriously.

So you take a cheap shot at Garbage, but you are reverent to Fall Out Boy, Robbie Williams, Kelly Clarkson and Neil Young? What is wrong with the world?

…And everybody who cares already knows Greg Graffin is a professor of evolutionary biology. He’s been for over a decade.

SATAN | 1/19/2007, 2:49 pm EST

I care and I did not know that

1of4 | 1/19/2007, 3:18 pm EST

What’s up whth the Garbage hate? Shirley Manson rocks hard! Long live Butch Vig!

As for the Robbie video…I was as bored as the drag queens.

Zachra | 1/19/2007, 3:23 pm EST

Since when is Kelly Clarkson considered a “pop-punk princess”? If that was sarcasm you need to emphasize it somehow, because it makes you look foolish.

nigger | 1/19/2007, 3:24 pm EST

um…i’ve always wanted to bang shirly manson.

and another thing, Goodman. You always talk shit about fall out boy and now all of a sudden you “love fall out boy”. it would be nice to see some consistency in this column

baba o riley | 1/19/2007, 3:24 pm EST

meh, she’s right. no one gives a crap about about garbage… except, let’s see, one, no two of you here. looks like elizabeth was being generous.

... | 1/19/2007, 3:24 pm EST

“We love Fall Out Boy.” What the crap is this magazine coming to? Wasnt it just about two issues ago when you were bashing on them and now you want it get with the crowd? Its just like the many of times where you guys resent a band because their popular and then start liking them because they are. Their music is shit, open your freaking ears. Oh and calling Kelly whatever her name is pop-punk, pft, thats like calling Back Street Boys metal.

Brian | 1/19/2007, 3:25 pm EST

God Damnit, I can’t even watch the Bears move on to the Super Bowl without seeing that fucking band…

What’s funny is I came here because I was going to post, whatever the top story was, that wasn’t it about time Rolling STone give us our daily Fall Out Boy update. You would think they think we fucking care about this band

Zachra | 1/19/2007, 3:25 pm EST

“We” love Fall Out Boy? That better be the royal “we”, the editorial “we” that you speak of.

Jimmy Jazz | 1/19/2007, 3:31 pm EST

Personally, I’m sickened by the idea of Fall Out Boy at a Football game. But I suppose it couldn’t be worse than that fucking John Mellencamp Chevy commercial that airs at least 20 times every game. Or Prince doing the Super Bowl. Seriously, did the NFL make a rule saying that any artist that headlines at the Super Bowl has to be at least 20 years past relevance?

Wanker | 1/19/2007, 3:48 pm EST

The Pumpkins are from Chicago, why not have them play? I don’t think Bears and Saints fans are very interested in music geared toward 12 yr old girls.

Thee | 1/19/2007, 4:01 pm EST

This must be a joke. I refuse to believe this is Rolling Stone. Does Elizabeth Goodman actually exist? Is this you Jann? You’re playing a cruel joke on us, aren’t you? If I wasn’t so bored at work, I’d stop visiting this webpage.

Kunty | 1/19/2007, 4:08 pm EST

A teacher in a “punk” band. That’s funny.

A-Dawg | 1/19/2007, 4:17 pm EST

What kills me is Rolling Stone is hating on so many bands, but you will see half of them on a cover before long…Panic! At The Disco, anyone?

Lotta punks | 1/19/2007, 4:22 pm EST

Teaching is like the official career choice of many present and former Punks. It’s the best job in the world for warping minds, creating the future and slacking off.

likroper.com | 1/19/2007, 4:41 pm EST

you’ll notice that both lauren gitlin and elizabeth goodman know exactly what ‘creepy’ is…

well,it is my belief that all women have built-in weird-o-meters and/or creep-o-meters which allow them to sense what is weird and/or creepy, but they always fail to realize that they are just selfishly projecting their own personal perspective in the process or rooting out the weird creepiness…

the people who think everything is creepy ~ are usually the creepiest ones of all…

why do i visit this site | 1/19/2007, 4:44 pm EST

Thee, you hit the nail right on the head. Now if only someone would hit a nail right on top of Elizabeth goodman’s head.

And does anyone else think kelly looks an awful lot like scott stapp in that pic? I’ll never look at her the same again…

Chuck | 1/19/2007, 4:48 pm EST

as Zachra said….Kelly Clarkson a “pop-punk princess”?

wtf is punk about Kelly Clarkson?

oh, I forgot, punk isn’t even punk anymore.

leanie | 1/19/2007, 5:17 pm EST

goodman=idiot

cobracommander | 1/19/2007, 5:18 pm EST

Fall out boy and the NFL go together like pizza and cat piss!
“Thee” is absolutely right. If I wasnt being paid hourly for this dogshit I’d never visit this site!

likroper.com | 1/19/2007, 6:06 pm EST

i’m full of theories, and conspiracy theories are my favorite because they are difficult if not impossible to prove…

likroper.com | 1/19/2007, 6:07 pm EST

(by the way; kelly C looks pretty cute in that photo)

Bodi | 1/19/2007, 7:02 pm EST

Fall Out Boy will get booed. Halftime at a football game aint TRL. It probably wont be as obvious as when Ashley Simpson was booed at the college national championship game. It will probably be similar to when Ja Rule got booed to shit in Philadelphia during the last game at Veteran’s stadium.

Rich | 1/20/2007, 1:05 pm EST

Kelly Clarkson can sing (period).

rockandrollgirl | 1/20/2007, 8:23 pm EST

RS loves FOB! Whatever! While they piss all over bands such as the Killers and the Strokes….whatever! As for Kelly Clarkson and the punk thing, I read about it on AOL awhile ago, if they consider My Chemical, and bands like them to be punk, then I’m not suprised that this merging of sounds doens’t seem odd to some. Meanwhile, Syd is rolling over as I write….

rockandrollgirl | 1/20/2007, 8:26 pm EST

Oh…and one more thing, as for Elizabeth Goodman, I think people are way too hard on her. I don’t agree with what she writes but I don’t think people here should be as rude and misguided in thier comments as she is in her reviews. It’s really not necessary. Also, I think that all the writers seem to have their own opinions of certain music and bands, even if ‘we’ is put before certain comments– I think it’s just a way of trying to prove that the magazine is supportive of their writers…I don’t know….otherwise, none of it makes sense.

YOU Killed Rock and Roll | 1/21/2007, 9:07 am EST

im tired of american idol… if stupid talentless kelly clarkson was really anything special, she wouldnt have needed american whatever-the-fuck to succeed. p.s., thanks for all the shitty production-line music american idol, youre making a circus out of what used to be an artform

YOU Killed Rock and Roll | 1/21/2007, 9:11 am EST

oh yea, fall out boy deserve to be assassinated because the are one of the worst fucking “bands” ive ever heard… yea, i said it… not that i have to worry about any of those pussies huntin me down. someone bring me back to the 1960s-70s when music was actually good.

case in point: Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Doors, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones.

YOU Killed Rock Music | 1/21/2007, 9:29 am EST

I’m fed up with this piss-poor excuse for a magazine. Thanks to you jack-asses, the music industry has turned in to a bunch of bullshit because your magazine praised the production-line “music” that came from one-hit wonders like the backstreet boys, kelly clarkshit, good charlotte and other shit like that. Have any of you that work at this damn magazine ever even listened to an album before? Does anyone even remember when an album was more than just one good song, one tolerable song, and 8 or 9 bullshit filler songs? I remember the days, and a great band called Led Zeppelin. Oh yeah, I forgot.., your bullshit magazine bashed pretty much every album Zeppelin ever made… oh how you all wish you could turn back time. But, its much to late. Your magazine has been a serious load of shit since Mendelsohn’s critique of Zeppelin’s second LP way back in 1969. When will you come to your senses and hire people that know more about music than whos the best looking or who wears the most jewlery. GET BENT ROLLING STONE… YOU KILLED ROCK MUSIC

Graham | 1/21/2007, 8:31 pm EST

I have a huge guilty crush on Kelly Clarkson, but NASCAR? Geezy fucking Pete. She’s better than that. I guess that she is from Texas though. Also, Fall Out Boy blows, but at least RS is respecting Robbie Williams’s music video genius.

Sara | 1/22/2007, 1:13 am EST

Garbage has become irrelevant, she’s right. Get over it. And Kelly rocks, go see her live and you’ll know!

Chuck | 1/23/2007, 10:37 am EST

“Garbage has become irrelevant, she’s right. Get over it. And Kelly rocks, go see her.”

*sighs* jeeze, saying Shirley Manson is irrelevant than saying Kelly Clarkson rocks…..*shakes head*
