Will Atlanta DJ Busts Bust a Cap in the Record Industry?

1/18/07, 5:56 pm EST

Yesterday we watched remarkably inept Fox 5 News reporter Stacey Elgin navigate her way through a wind-tunnel while describing a raid ordered by RIAA anti-piracy agents on Gangsta Grillz studio in Atlanta. Venerable mixtape DJs Drama and Don Cannon were arrested for “making and selling ‘illegal CDs.’” All their merchandise was seized. The report characterized the well-known DJs as “pirates engaged in the production of illegal material.” They were also painted with a rather broad and dirty brush. “In this case, we didn’t find weapons…but it’s not uncommon to find other kinds of contraband when exercising a search warrant,” said one interviewed Fulton County Sheriff’s Office rep. Both DJs have been released on $100,000 bond.

Mixtape production has unofficially been a part of the hip-hop promotion process for years, and though it sometimes involves the use of copyrighted material, it has been accepted industry practice. Coach K, the manager of another Atlanta artist, Young Jeezy, employed the mixtape process to build his artist’s street cred and turn him into a hit-maker. Without mixtape DJs, record labels (the entities this seizure supposedly protects) will have to do a lot more promotional work for fledgling artists. “What the industry doesn’t understand is that artists go to these guys to make their music,” K explains. “Labels these days, don’t really spend marketing money on the grass roots thing, so you go through these mixtapes to get the music into the streets.”

What do you think? Has the RIAA shot itself in the foot with this vicious attack against DJs Drama and Don Cannon? How will this effect the way young rappers enter the industry?

jordan | 1/19/2007, 11:13 pm EST

if the riaa has the blind idiocy to go after mixtapes why not crack down on bands covering songs at their shows??? people like it, a good cover or a good mixtape can get somebody into an artist?

the riaa needs to pick their battles and think of the rammifications of being assholes.

they want to boost cd sales and stop piracy but they wont take the effort to make sure the shit they are releasing isnt one ok, catchy but forgettable song and a slew of garbage tracks surrounding it.

Rap sucks these days but damn that boy is hot in the pirate get-up.
mmm. wish he was a gay rapper.
he’d be all mine. yum!

Luke | 1/19/2007, 3:46 pm EST

First off, all of you simply ranting about how rap sucks: shut up. Sure rap has its crew of terrible rappers, and sure that list is probably longer than the list of good ones, but to say that all rap is bad is ignorant. I can very well say rock is terrible because whiny emo bands seem to pop-up like some terrible Egyptian plague.
Have any of you actually listened to the album which this piece is talking about? For those of you who don’t know its called the Dedication II and ‘Lil Wayne and DJ Drama collaborated on it.
In my opinion it is a fantastic album, I enjoy it so much more than any of his studio albums. The rapping is stellar, and ‘Lil Wayne’s talent as a lyricist is noticeable from the first track…as is his cocky attitude.

Anyway, I think the RIAA is being, well for lack of a better word, retarded. Like i said, this album is better than his studio ones, and had i not heard this album, i doubt I would have been interested in ‘Lil Wayne at all. If the RIAA keeps this stupidity up, they will have to face the wrath of not only upset consumers, but also, hopefully, the record labels will see just how bad the RIAA is screwing things up for everyone.

We are in a new age, the RIAA lives to protect yesterday.

Whether you love or hate rap, the fact of the matter is artists pushing mixtapes as a form of “grassroots” promotion is nothing new. DJs in nearly every genre of music (Rock, Jam, Go-Go, etc.) sling mixtapes on a regular basis in order to promote up and coming musicians and while on paper this may not be legal, it’s simply a necessary evil that record companies have accepted because in the end it’s sheer grassroots publicity-and any label can safely agree that the worst publicity is no publicity.

This is simply another case of the RIAA stepping on toes in an effort to make a name for themselves, much like the DEA in its early years. Unfortunately, when all’s said in done, the will accomplish nothing because for every DJ who’s house gets raided (for music, not drugs or weapons) there will be 5 more who pop up in his place. It’s up to the music industry now…do they want to raid houses of “underground PR people” and kill the very publicity that generates buzz about new artists, or do they want to cease and let the natural order of things transpire. Afterall, when all is said and done, it’s music…a freedom of expression that should not be government regulated.

Only good rap is the Beastie Boys, Rakim, Tribe, and the Roots, that is about it.

MMW | 1/19/2007, 10:54 am EST

the only rap worth a shit is public enemy. everything else is toilet sounds with some idiot attempting to spout the next TRL catchphrase. rap needs to die. it took a turn for the worse when jay-z come to promience around 96. he is the one who started the whole check out my bling/rims/cristal/fat assed chick rap that no one cares about because we know rappers these days are glorified crack dealers (TI) or a studio gangsta pussy who does love films (5o). Bottom line- they all need thier ass kicked.

Ryan | 1/19/2007, 9:42 am EST

The RIAA is wrong on this one, but if this raid got any “rappers” off the streets, then fine. My dog’s farts are more musical.

ruggs | 1/19/2007, 9:24 am EST

if hip-hop “artists” were still making “art” maybe I’d give a shit. if I see one more “lil” somebody I’m going to puke. will somebody please play these people some black sheep or run-dmc to remind them of (or introduce them to) a great musical tradition that they’re ruining?

I agree with the writer of this story, that the artist’s and the RIAA, really needs pirates, no matter if it’s rap or rock, or some lame ass country or jazz album. Programs like WinMX, ares, morphius, limewire, and even Napster need mixed tapes, and the internet to reach the publin in such a demand that it highers there street credit, and shows that there worthy of making that #1 spot in the popularity charts (Billboard), with out any kind o0f pirating, we tend to spend alot of money, on a movie, book, magazine and music album, that isn’t worth the money that we spend. The ones here who piss on the rap gate, i agree quit hating, and stop limiting your intrest’s, the ones who think pirating should be finalized in our world and nation, i hope you have the money to buy stuff that isn’t worth the fourteen dollors you spent on it. Some say critics can prevent that from happening, but not all people have the same taste’s, what might be a thumbs up for enie and bert, don’t mean that it’s gonna be a thumbs up for Elmo and Kermit…..so stop pretending you don’t download, or buy some kind of illigal stuff, movies or music, or if your real dull, them boring e-books. You all have a great day, peace!

I don’t want to sound like I’m defending Birdman, Jr. here, but someone has to present an intelligent defense of hip-hop. Sampling, mixing, and DJing is hardly unoriginal. Whether a producer is creating original beats, or a DJ samples music from another genre and turns it into an ill beat, it’s all legit. The best music is very often based on shit that has already been writen or experimented with. Take folk music or the blues. It’s based on scales, and is often just different progression of the same notes. The same goes for punk, rock, etc. It all comes from somewhere. It’s only assholes like Vanilla Ice that jack beats and claim them to be original that taint the whole thing. If you doubt me, then you obviously have never listen to the Tribe…

vusi mdhluli | 1/19/2007, 2:40 am EST

ReadySet | 1/18/2007, 11:10 pm EST

If half the people who comment on this hate rap and Lil Wayne anyways, why do you goths, emos, and such even care to read it in the first place.

IMightBeWrong | 1/18/2007, 10:16 pm EST

Whether or not you like rap and the artists involved is irrelevant. The real issue here is why should more bullshit be brought down on the little guy? I’m sick and tired of these goddamned record labels claiming to “protect” these artists. Thankfully though, some are becoming the wiser - just look at Pearl Jam’s last record, why sign another stupid contract with an idiotic label when you can just release it yourself… but obviously that takes a lot of money - money that most of these acts have very little of. It’s quite sad really, regardless of the bands/artists involved in the proceedings.

Birdman Jr. | 1/18/2007, 10:00 pm EST

Yep its sure to be the end of rap as we know it. Could you possibly sound more ignorant? GO listen to some trendy Indie rock that you only like because it got good reviews from this magazine.

Lil Wayne is DA Best. YOU GOT DAT SHIT? Dr. Dog is 2nd best. YA HEARD ME!

likroper.com | 1/18/2007, 8:35 pm EST

they also try to say that sending out promotional cds (something led zep originated) is a form of payola, but other than free mp3s (which i do not involve myself with yet) that is the only way to promote cds on college radio, so what are small labels supposed to do?…payola limts should really only apply to huge labels who can dump tons of money into their products and outshadow little labels, or something…

MADFERIT | 1/18/2007, 8:22 pm EST

Who gives a shit???? RAP SUCKS!

big g | 1/18/2007, 8:06 pm EST

I think that if the artist whom the copyrighted material belong to don’t have a problem with the way that there music is bieng used then why all the fuss. There is still way too much money in the music industry to be made why cry over a few pennies

DJ mixtapes are original music.

Anon- you’re almost ignorant enough to work for the RIAA. Almost.

Anonymous | 1/18/2007, 6:51 pm EST

Just make some original music and then try to making a living off of that. Its a truley novel idea

Garp | 1/18/2007, 6:41 pm EST

The RIAA, fascist corpo capital pigs tho they may be, will drop the suit…The outrage among hip hop artists/promoters, etc. will be uncontainable. Remember the Takeover…Hova runs this sh** and won’t stand for it.

Over at allhiphop.com, they’re promoting a petition to get the charges drop.

Jimmy Pasta | 1/18/2007, 6:12 pm EST

THE RIAA has already shot itself in the foot so many times already the feet are blown off and they now shoot themselves in the kneecap.
