Motor City: Help One of Your Own

Question Mark

Question Mark, the frontman for the 1960s Mexican-American one-hit heroes, Question Mark and the Mysterians, undoubtedly shed more than “96 Tears” when a fire decimated his Flint, Michigan, home of forty years.

The singer, who was not covered by homeowner’s insurance (fire coverage is so not rock & roll), lost a lifetime of precious memorabilia including a gold record and an organ that apparently once belonged to Pink Floyd. Sadly, his pets—four Yorkshire terriers and a cockatoo—perished in the blaze. The devastated rocker has had his spirits lifted by talk of a superstar-studded benefit concert. The Mark has mentioned several Michigan-area artists like Bob Seger, Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker and Eminem plus the Mysterians (of course) as potential headliners. “The phone’s been ringing off the hook,” Question Mark told The Flint Journal.

The Mysterians topped the charts in 1966 with “96 Tears” (the missing gold record) and are believed to be the first band to be described as “punk rock.” They are also the first Latino rock group to have a mainstream pop hit. Question Mark’s actual name is believed to be Rudy Martinez but had it changed to ? decades ago and claims that he is actually a Martian who once lived with dinosaurs.

Clearly this is a man who needs a little help. If you have any ideas about how to replace some of his lost treasures, we’d love to hear them. You can also contact him directly at: Question Mark and the Mysterians, P.O. Box 96, Clio, MI 48420, on his MySpace page…or by using a standard issue Martian communicator.

w0nderwall | 1/18/2007, 3:15 pm EST

Angel, what you said to Paul shows your true ultra ignorance. There is a problem in this country right now in giving people who come here illegally (and no that is not limited to Mexicans) everything they want. Automatic citizenship and all the other political BS that goes with it. My parents, not some long-time-ago ancestors, but my parents came to the U.S. “legally” not knowing a word of English, yet they worked hard and made their way up, GOT EDUCATED and you know why? Because they didn’t hold signs to protest and demand shit. They worked hard at it no matter who stood in their way. So I don’t feel sorry for “illegal” immigrants because the last time I checked, it is a crime to come into the U.S. without proper documentation. People want to throw the racist card at people who hold this opinion, but it’s not an opinion, it’s a fact of how things are set up in this country. If people want to come from all over the world and make their lives in America, great, but if they come in illegally, breaking the law from the get-go, then no, it’s unacceptable. If our government grants automatic citizenship to whatever number of illegals, it is a slap to the face to those who came here legally and worked their asses off to be successful. How come the media doesn’t talk about this? I’ll tell you why, the mainstream media in America is run by extreme left-wing vermin, which of course is why liberalism is a mental disorder. I’m not saying extreme right-wing bias is better, because it’s not. But anyone saying that illegals should be allowed to stay are traitors to the American people, whether they are African-American, Hispanic, Asian, white, Native American, etc. Deport those who are here illegally, and those who have been convicted of crimes should remain in prison until they rot since they decided to leave their country and break another country’s laws. The country is no longer as big as it once, where propaganda said free land for all. Those days are over. There are over 300 million people here, and idiots want to say those who come illegally should stay and have equal rights. Fuck off!

As for this guy who lost his house, well that really sucks, and hopefully he’ll be alright. It’s not cool to see anyone lose their house no matter how rich or poor they are. Hopefully some cool bands like Metallica or Red Hot Chili Peppers will help out at this gig.

wrecksracer | 1/18/2007, 3:43 pm EST

I saw ? and the Mysterians a couple of years ago here in Chicago……those guys rock!
….and why are people bashing Latino rockers? These guys are from Flint, Michigan anyway(that’s here in the United States)

wOnderwall | 1/18/2007, 4:12 pm EST

Oasis and these guys should tour together! Oasis is so cool and not overrated at all. Also, I’m not a condesending wanker who’s full of himself.

ljs with love... | 1/18/2007, 5:05 pm EST

wow, wOnderwall, i think you’re the ignorant assfuck, not angel. “give us your poor, your tired, your huddled masses longing to be free…” last time i checked, america was the land of opportunity. yeah, congratulations to your parents for coming here legally and whatnot, (do you want a gold star, or maybe a cookie?) but the fact still remains: this country was (the united states as we know it today) was founded on the stolen land of the native americans that were killed and raped etc. also, the slaves that were brought into this country against their will in order to work the land of this country… i would go on, but it’s redundant. the fact that we as a country are now deciding who can and can’t come and live in this (sometimes) great country is absolutely hypocritical. if you don’t realize this, you’re an idiot. (p.s. i would hope that if for some reason your parents couldn’t have come here legally, they would have come by any means necessary, if only to give your superiority-complexed ass the opportunity at a better life.)

wOnderwall: nice fucking work! tell it how it is, even if these douchebags don’t want to hear it!

and also, I hope ? gets back on his feet, I love that song.

w0nderwall | 1/18/2007, 7:41 pm EST

ljs with love,

So basically you’re saying that it’s ok that complete strangers should be allowed to come to your house, eat your food, sleep in your bed, use up your utilities and belongings, and all at your expense. Hey, you know what, then why don’t you open your door and let them all in? Uh, you won’t, of course not. Why would you? You don’t want someone using up your stuff, not since you paid for it of course. It was your money. As a taxpayer, I do have an opinion about how my taxes are used, including on how it is used on illegal immigration. And I am aware of our history, however good or bad it is. But guess what, you and I were not alive during that period of time, but we live in the times we live in NOW. So don’t cry about something that you weren’t even alive for. Be a little more mature about this, and realize what the money you work for goes to. So what about the homeless, the drug addicts, abandoned animals, why don’t you help them out, people who are already suffering on our own streets. Why don’t you help them instead of worry about people who come in illegally? It’s like Bush saying he wants to help the Iraqi people, but why doesn’t he make a priority to help Americans here? Hmm, it seems like you and Bush have a lot in common. Take for your own house first before you help someone else.

likroper.com | 1/18/2007, 9:01 pm EST

hopefully question mark can soon be a happy camper once again with new puppies and a new house…

ljs with love... | 1/18/2007, 10:18 pm EST

wOnderwall,

this is exciting. whew! i am excited. i have a playmate. yeay! well, anyway, i am all for helping the homeless, drug addicts, and of course, the animals (they’re just soooo cute), but i am also for helping others who want the same opportunities for their loved ones that i have. just because i was born in america doesn’t make me any more deserving than someone who was born in a country that has a subpar government that can’t care for its people. the reality is that yes, this country cannot support an infinite amount of people, but how to regulate it? it’s impossible. should we build a fence? ha! should we ship them all out? double ha! is that what you want your tax money spent on? the truth is that there is no good idea concerning illegal immigrants and how to deal with that. just because there isn’t a good idea doesn’t mean any idea should be employed. when that happens, shit hits the fan.
and i quote: “But guess what, you and I were not alive during that period of time, but we live in the times we live in NOW. So don’t cry about something that you weren’t even alive for.” if we ignore the history of this nation, we will repeat the same mistakes again. just look at vietn…i mean iraq.
hey, if you are ever in the wisconsin area, feel free to visit me at my home–3462 n. newhall st. milwaukee, wi 53211–any time you wish. oh, and bring friends.
also, please never compare me to george w. that’s just plain insulting–i am much more handsome than he is.

“96 Tears is the best Rock ‘n Roll song ever” – John Lennon

The Dude | 1/19/2007, 12:29 am EST

Uncle Cracker should sing “96 Tears” over and over again, because he is only capable of singing non-original music.

Kyle | 1/19/2007, 9:36 am EST
