I guess this would be a bad time to ask Al Gore for an interview on Global Warming, huh? Just another example of why liberalism is a mental disorder. Not everything is in our control, and not everything is our fault Al Gore! Yes, you were the rightful winner of the 2000 Election, but you’re wrong about Global Warming. Doesn’t matter because by mid-July, Al Gore’s fat ass will be brainwashing the liberal morons who don’t have a brain. However, let’s party!

He is talking about a complete shift in weather – climates changing all over the world – for example frozen fruit in California and a canadian winter that is comparable to a winter in maryland. I live in toronto and it has been gorgeous here. It is the most mild of winters i have ever seen in my life. Something is seriously wrong.

Denis | 1/17/2007, 9:29 am EST

Your’re right, maybe Al Gore was wrong. Wrong for thinking that intelligent, fact-based discussion could be conducted in the public realm.

back to reality | 1/17/2007, 9:45 am EST

all we really know is that throughout geological history there have been periods of high intensity and low intensity of heating and cooling. There have been ice ages and there have been periods of extreme warmth in which arkansas was beach front.

rebecca | 1/17/2007, 9:46 am EST

If you have actually watched An Inconvenient Truth, you would see that Gore spoke about the effects of Global Warming and that it works on both ends. Things will get too hot and cause droughts, and things will get too cold and cause a freeze. He explained it very thoroughly.

It’s a very interesting film. When you get a chance, watch it.

Stewie | 1/17/2007, 10:05 am EST

Global warming made me pee the bed.

Robert | 1/17/2007, 10:07 am EST

God forbid we actually considered the sun as the probable cause of temperature affecting our weather. Significant sun storms are being reported constantly and the mental midgets still insist its the UNited States pollution causing it. If people travelled a bit and exposed themseleves to the world, they would see that the U.S. is prsitine compared to the filth in other “civilized” countries. Example, the rivers of Europe are absolutely filthy. I would drink Hudson River water any day before even sticking my toe in the Tiber. Never mind the Middle East where their is no regard for environment or cleanliness. For instance in the Middle East, they just dump their garbage randomly outside the city walls, not even in a dump.

But Al Gore blames us. What an idiot!!!

fixtheglitch | 1/17/2007, 10:10 am EST

All of the previous geological and environmental changes occurred naturally. We have dumped untold tons of emissions and waste into the environment which is affecting things on an artificial level. Global warming is a fact; get used to it.

Z | 1/17/2007, 10:21 am EST

Global warming works both ways, as does El Nino. You may be cold out west, but we haven’t seen any snow in Maryland, and normally there’s been a bad storm or two by now. It’s been so warm the cherry trees here & DC are blooming 3 months early.

David F | 1/17/2007, 11:26 am EST

I don’t suppose anyone has seen the study that shows bovine flatulence is a larger cause of global warming than any man-made pollution. Not to mention that the Earth has a history of global climate change that was brought on by natural causes. Any idiot understands that man-made pollution is not good for the environment and should be kept to a minimum, but I don’t think the situation is as dire as ol’ Al Gore makes it out to be.

Robbie | 1/17/2007, 11:40 am EST

Dan | 1/17/2007, 12:23 pm EST

Having inhabited this planet shortly over two decades gives me a limited range, but I can still remember a dramatically different winter when I was a child. Trying to say that this is still the receding of the ice age is ludicrous, a 20,000 year cycle that never varies world temps more than 12 degrees. Unless we have finished the last 10,000 years of this cycle in the past 15 years, there is obviously another culprit. I can’t understand why some of you would rather ignore the obvious than accept any sliver of blame, no matter how small.

Just go drive that SUV to work, and everything will be fine.

RCA of the band STD | 1/17/2007, 12:56 pm EST

Whoever allowed this to be published should be fired along with the idiot that hired those morons from “I’m with Rollingstone”. Don’t you think it is odd that places like San Antonio are freezing over? I am in Chicago and our winter has been the warmest in recent memory. Gore’s whole evidence relies on weather being drastically different in places where it has been constant in years. Hmmm very warm in chicago, freezing in Texas…..

Lobsters | 1/17/2007, 1:01 pm EST

Global Warming is definitely happening. But anybody who claims that it is caused by anything people are doing is an authoritarian asshole who wants to order everybody around and force us to live the way they want us to live. Fuckin’ kill those cocksuckers.

AOA | 1/17/2007, 1:27 pm EST

They were kidding, morons. Clearly it’s sarcasm. Try to keep up. No one at Rolling Stone thinks global warming isn’t real.

james | 1/17/2007, 1:36 pm EST

It is one thing to say you do not believe in The Greenhouse Effect. But can someone please explain to me why these arguments are laced with words like ‘morons, and idiots’? I have never heard an intelligent person make an effective argument by speaking trash. If you don’t believe in the Effect, say why. When you resort to hillbilly language it sounds like you have no confidence in what you are saying – and are resorting to bullying and putdowns as a desperate way of getting people to agree with you.

Truth Be Told | 1/17/2007, 1:41 pm EST

To Cooter,

You sound extremely sheep like, Open your eyes and expand your view. Global Warming is real and happening before our very eyes. For your own good take some anger management classes! Peace be with you…

Mitch | 1/17/2007, 1:43 pm EST

Having recently read Michael Chrichton’s novel, “State of Fear”, I have reconsidered my position on global warming. I have followed up on Crichton’s many citations of scientific documents and journals and found them to be mainstream and credible. Although a great many politicos and scientists support the notion of a human component to climate change, there are certainly many who do not find the evidence for the theory compelling in the least. Also, there are many who are convinced that the evidence is being manipulated for geo-political reasons rather than out of genuine environmental concerns.

I won’t try to lay out the evidence in this brief forum, but will suggest that if you are going to view Mr. Gore’s film, you might want to check “State of Fear” out of the library in order to get another perspective.

Music? How about Fathead’s, “Two Sides to Every Story”?

Eric | 1/17/2007, 3:05 pm EST

pretty sure this is not simply evidence to throw it away as a conspiracy as it is believed that global warming does not just bring a generalized warmer avg global temp., but more dramatic climate changes as well.

SoWhat451 | 1/17/2007, 3:09 pm EST

Well, global warming is actually a misnomer- climat change would be a better phrase. As the earth warms up, we’re seeing more extreme weather- not necessarily warmer. Hence events like Hurrican Katrina, snow in Texas and snow-less slopes in the Alps.

bordstiff | 1/17/2007, 3:20 pm EST

global warming and al gore did I get misdirected to boring quasi-political bullshit dot com, I thought I was on the rolling stone website? What about the new Block Party Album NME is all over it, Huh…Huh?

Beaufighter | 1/17/2007, 3:49 pm EST

Michael Crichton’s a hack. Crichton also doesn’t believe that bacteria causes disease. Like his brilliant work on global warming, his research into the matter consist completely of expressing his doubts as to the scientific method. But he also believes in ghosts, too; no scientific evidence exists to prove the existence of ghosts, but somehow that’s not important, since he believes….see a pattern?

“State of Fear” is a work of fiction that dishonestly distorts and flat-out misrepresents actual hard scientififc research. It’s been debunked time and time again, yet it keeps getting brought up as “proof” that global warming is false. His “authoritative opinion” amounts to little more than an op-ed column. If Crichton stands by his theories, why the need to churlishly name child molesters in his fiction after his critics?

There’s no two sides to a debate if one side’s full of crap.

andy | 1/17/2007, 3:50 pm EST

“state of fear” is a fiction book. if you think that discredits 98% of scientists then you sir, are out of yoru mind

Let Them Eat Cake | 1/17/2007, 3:52 pm EST

Global Warming is all about Extremes in weather, and for our area in California, we have experienced the hottest summer in years and, now the coldest winter-we have ice and snow in places we have seldom experienced the phenomenon!

It seems to be the case all over the country/the world…

And people can make a difference-Science supports that fact-we and the weather, the land are interlinked…

Hey, whiny Californians, why not take a trip out to the other coast where New England is having unseasonable warmth that is causing complications in all sorts of our industries. Hm, strange… Coast to coast abnormal weather patterns? Sounds like a global weather problem to me.

I enjoy young black wang.

BSUfan | 1/17/2007, 4:20 pm EST

It is impossible to have a really logical discussion on global warning on this forum because people are so passionate for either side of the argument. It is possible to make the facts look like they support either side of the argument because so little is known about the earth’s weather system over thousands of years. You can’t tell me that scientists supported by the right won’t make it look like the facts don’t support global warning just as those supported by the left make the opposite claim based on the same info. Personally I won’t watch a movie made by Al Gore on this topic just as I wouldn’t watch one made by Bush. They both have an aggenda to push.

Crichton vs. GW | 1/17/2007, 4:46 pm EST

Crichton does make one good point. Where is the science? There are good theories out there, but none as strong as say…the theory of evolution. People are making bigger claims than the science can back up, as of now. It doesn’t mean that Global Warming isn’t a fact. It’s just that people are making huge claims before the studies have been done.

jim | 1/17/2007, 4:50 pm EST

I have a genious plan to stop global warming from destroying our planet. “What is it?” you ask. Let’s beat the fucker to the punch. thats right, lets destroy the world before it destroys itself. first we topple the gov’t, then punch all the babies. after that every person in the world will be forced to join either the red or blue army, then a war consisting only of fireworks will ensue for the remainder of humanity’s horrid last days. Sure, may sound awful, but i think we’d all agree it’s a hella lot better than Feezing to death(ice age), burning to death(global warming), really burning to death (atomic war), or any other freaky ass doomsday forecast laid out in recent years.

Why do you got to copy my name asshole? You are an impostor, but I shouldn’t be surprised, really, when I am sure you believe in Global Warming, a fiction-lesson in so-called extreme climate changes taught by a loser like Al Gore. So instead of presenting any real opinion or knowledge about anything, let alone posting a play list like the post says, you steal my name. What a turd. It’s ok though, your lack of imagination is an example of your ultra ignorance and the willingness to believe anything you hear or read. In the 1970s, studies indicated the world was getting colder. Are temperatures weird and out of place today, sure, I’ll acknowledge that, especially here in southern California. But what will ultra ignorant assholes such as yourself say when 20 or 30 more years go by and the argument becomes the world is getting colder again. This is why liberalism is a mental disorder. It is a disorder because it is rationalizing and thought-processing without logic or any level of common sense. Enjoy life, and stop reading into ridiculous paranoia. And if it is true, guess what? You won’t be able to do anything about it.

This Machine Destroys TV. | 1/17/2007, 7:04 pm EST

Global warming is another scare tactic. However hot or cold the planet gets, man will adapt – just as we have been doing throughout history.

rocknrollis4idiotsandcrybabies | 1/17/2007, 9:13 pm EST

Poor Al Gore. In a few years time his so called “heroic enviromental activism” will turn him into a leftist laughing stock. Thank God. All we needed was one more sorry idiot to prove the sheer, utter stupidity of liberalism. Saving the environment is great and all, but blaming a solar flare and temperatures a few degrees above normal on the evil of mankind? Please. It’s amusing how gullible some people really are. Yeah, polar ice caps are melting, temperatures are rising, but hey, did Al ever stop to mention that on the other side of the globe, water levels are getting lower? And how about that recent solar activity? Don’t tell me driving a hummer has any effect on how hot the sun gets evey couple of thousand years. Why do leftists feel the need to hate on the human race so much? Am I really such a monster for turning on the heat in the dead of winter? Somebody please explain to me the liberal pysche.

Mike27 | 1/17/2007, 10:29 pm EST

People who are laughing at al gore and his global warming ideas are the same kind of people who laughed ages ago when someone suggested that the world was not flat.

w0nderwall | 1/17/2007, 10:35 pm EST

People who believe Al Gore and his fable of Global Warming, let alone selling out to buy his DVD, are suffering from a mental disorder known as liberalism. These morons, no, willing retards of the human race probably saw The Day After Tomorrow one too many times after taking too much Prozac and getting high. Liberals always want to point their ugly little fingers towards human beings for every little thing, from temperature climate changes to apples falling off trees or flowers being stepped on. What a bunch of pussies!

do you really take it that personally?

–”collectively, we’re probably causing the problem.”
–”well, your mother is a whore”
–”im just saying that global warming may be a huge threat”
–”yeah, most communists think that”

i dont see why you refuse to believe that there are any big problems in the world. The worst part is that the problems could be solved with just a little open-mindedness. and you dont even have to give up your right wing beliefs to do it. its simple just let go of the fact that you hate liberals and just acknowledge and help solve the problem. honestly…

gastonphipps | 1/17/2007, 11:09 pm EST

There are two questions people seem to forget to ask or consider when they debate the points of global warming(among other things). The questions are- what does each side have to gain from their respective points of view? And what harm is to come from proceeding in which ever direction you support? To me the answer comes in the form of other questions- If the right is correct, then what harm can come from driving an electric cars? or if the left is correct, then what’s wrong with swimming down Madison Avenue?

Mitch | 1/17/2007, 11:14 pm EST

The flat earth analogy is interesting, only, then the majority held that the earth was flat and had trouble being convinced otherwise. Today, the majority hold that global warming is a brute fact and a small group with a different view are having trouble getting past the insults and personal attacks to even be allowed to present a convincing argument.

One other thing… The people who claim to know about climate can’t even adequately predict what the weather will be like in a week’s time. How can they possible be better at forcasting years, decades, even centuries into the future?

w0nderwall | 1/17/2007, 11:21 pm EST

Global Warming is not a right-wing or left-wing belief, it’s pure retardation. Who can truly believe this nut case? I know having the 2000 Election stolen can drive anyone to the edge, but this man needs medical help, or at least someone serious enough to tell him to just knock it off. Everything is going to be ok. As for the Earth is flat argument, wow, how dumb was that? Back then, mainstream ideals were that the Earth indeed was flat but of course that all changed. This whole Global Warming thing is nothing new. There have been arguments about the changing of the planet since mankind existed. The Ice Age. The Stone Age. Dinosaurs. Humans. Liberals. You name it. Props to whoever said man will simply adapt, because that’s the truest argument. This Global Warming thing will blow over 10 to 20 yrs, tops. Get the fuck off the Prozac.

Arthur Corningwaddle | 1/17/2007, 11:28 pm EST

Ladies and gentlemen, the whole “Playlist of the Day” thing is for you to think of songs that relate to the topic, not call each other morons and scream at your computers over it. This is ROLLING FREAKING STONE not a political website. Be nice if people could be civil for a change. Hawking just recently said that climate change is a concern. My understanding is that there’s plenty of consensus out there that global warming is happening. CO2 traps in heat…we’re putting CO2 into the air. I mean, it doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots.

ikondave | 1/19/2007, 1:42 pm EST

I’ve been spending my summers in Nova Scotia for the last 20 years. When I first started going there nobody, no hotel, no public building had air conditioning. There was no need. Every night you had to wear a jacket when you went outside, had to burn a little wood in the stove and slept under a blanket. Most folks had their
windows painted shut to keep in the heat. The daytime high temperature rarely passed 72 degrees.

Today many homes have central air, as do public buildings. Most motels and hotels have a/c, too. You almost never need warm clothing ( last summer I only needed a jacket when it rained ). We had many days when the temperature was in the lower 80’s and brutally humid. For the last five or so years we have days when he air quality is so poor that people with health problems are advised to stay indoors. The haze is thick enough that we can hardly see across Saint Mary’s Bay. This filthy air comes from the American Midwest and Southern Ontario.

The Province is experiencing winters that are particularly snowy. When I talk with locals who have lived there for their entire 80 plus years, they all agree that they have never seen weather patterns like this. As retired fishermen, they are keenly aware of what is happening in the environment.

People who doubt the reality of global warming are idiots.

JUSTIN AJAYI | 1/19/2007, 1:47 pm EST

It is interesting the way our scientists want to play God and pretend they know everything. As recently as last year we were told there is no more planet called Pluto. Can we for once let nature take its course and we just be Humans.Global warming or not , I know that nature has a way of balancing itself out. While I dont beleive in the bashing of our respected Vice President Al Gore,I do not beleive in the “doomsday philosophy” either, which brings fear and panic into the heartS of men.Can we all go about our business and let God take care of his Universe? We did not Know how he did it in the first place, except for what we were told by Moses.
Justin Ajayi
Florida.USA

RockJesus | 1/19/2007, 1:56 pm EST

Saying “let nature take its course” is like burying your head in the ground. Ignoring problems don’t make them go away. I’m sorry, but God isn’t going to sweep down and suck out all the CO2 from atmosphere. We created this problem and it’s ours to fix.

No one is claiming scientists know everything, but it’s equally ridiculous to suggest that they know nothing about global warming.

utopian007 | 1/19/2007, 2:12 pm EST

I am surprised with all of the conservative responses for a couple of reasons. The first is that you read Rolling Stone in the first place and second that you can read at all considering the sad state of our educational system under Dubya.

Scientific facts that in 2005 the average temperature was the hottest on record and the breaking up of ice shelves mean it is getting a little hotter. Sounds like a simple concept to get your head around. And the monster hurricanes can only flourish when there are warm waters. Living in Orlando, I cannot imagine too many times in history where three hurricanes went through the same area in a year, the same year that had a record number of named storms. But I guess that is just my liberal imagination.

Matt | 1/19/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Global warming is supposed to cause fluctuations between extreme hot and extreme cold. In fact, rising ocean temperatures ensure large cold fronts. It has to do with proportional distribution of heat, which is a pretty easy concept to comprehend unless you consciously refuse to understand.
Anybody who claims that a period of cold weather falsifies the theory of human-caused global warming is an idiot, and should not be allowed access to a keyboard for fear of choking on it.
It’s not a crime to to be unable to comprehend science, but it is certainly folly to ignorantly criticize decent people who are trying to keep our planet habitable in the future. Planning ahead and foresight might seem ridiculous to some, but that doesn’t make it any less logical an endeavor.

I find it interesting that the people who wanted to make a joke of the idea of global warming immediately turned to insulting liberalism instead of trying to post a credible alternative to what could be causing the current trends in weather the world round. All i can say is, first of all, looking around you now and saying “its hot out. its cold out.” won’t tell you anything. or not much. When you’re looking at a “global” phenomenon, you have to look at hundreds and hundreds, even thousands of years of records in order to determine a trend. Global warming does in fact seem to be occuring. It will make some places hot, others very cold. Dry in some, wet in others. The point is, it will be much more extreme than it used to be. As someone mentioned a long time ago, its all about the partitioning of heat around the Earth. If you refuse to try to grasp that, or drop yourselves down to insulting each others political affiliations instead of trying to add anything to a conversation, wonderful. It just says plenty about who you as a person are. Frankly, most of you frighten me.

are you kidding? for most of December and the beginning of January, it was really warm (60s, 70s, getting up to the 80s, I think) in the Baltimore area (where I live when I don’t go to school). winter break at home was very warm. sure it’s cold now (and not just because I’m back in PA), but it wasn’t before.

Sorry, but I’m old enough to remember the 70’s, when decreasing global temperatures led my professors to declare we were headed for a new “Ice Age”.

Whatever.

Are we educated here…you all are fools, FOOLS if you do not realize how much Co2 is stuck, yes STUCK in out atmosphere….go to the hayden planetarium or any for that matter of fact and ask someone…Jesus! It didn’t even snow until two days ago in NY and its two months from spring….fine, ignore the issue and then when tsunamis hit San Fran and NY floods, yeah then you’ll care.

“I don’t suppose anyone has seen the study that shows bovine flatulence is a larger cause of global warming than any man-made pollution.”

That is man-made pollution! You think it’s natural that there are 1.4 billion cows on the planet? There are so many cows because we raise them for food and clothing.

it’s global climate change. not everywhere gets warm.

“I am surprised with all of the conservative responses for a couple of reasons. The first is that you read Rolling Stone in the first place and second that you can read at all considering the sad state of our educational system under Dubya”

Oh I see, so conservatives do not read RS? And I guess that liberals don’t watch South Park?
I’ve read RS for years and their politics have always been slanted, biased and just plain hysterical. But their music coverage has usually been spot on, you just have to get through articles on idiots like Al Gore who peddle propaganda, and articles on fools like Bill “domestic abuse brawler” Maher.

How many billions of people now alive will have decades stripped from their life because they do not have clean drinking water, or adequate and sanitary food. That number dwarfs the number that will die as a result of a 1 to 5 degree F increase in average global temperature. Perhaps the gazillions of dollars worth of effort to transform our energy to carbon free sources would be better spent on water treatment and food distribution/preservation. The human body and our society can withstand wide variation in temperature. (Where I live in Colorado, I annually see temps from -25 F to 100 F-if it changes to -20 F to 105 F, big deal.) Global warming is far down on the list of hobgoblins that threaten both individuals and society as a whole. The seeming consensus regarding the need to decrease CO2 emissions is morally bankrupt as well as patently unscientific. Wouldn’t it be a shame to declare the moral equivalent of war on CO2, and in a few decades realize that maybe land use/land cover, aerosols, and ocean circulation and other forcings and feedbacks have a lot more to do with the problem (or even tend to buffer the problem) than we now understand.

Somehow.. some people will get confuse (or dilusified by politics or possible threat to their job) with global warming and el nino, just like they confuse to diferentiate climate and weather.
Hard to say folks, but all of them are true and happening these days.
