If You Look at This Picture, You Owe Us $32,500

Robert Johnson

Up until today, conventional wisdom had it that there are only two known-to-be authentic photos of legendary Mississippi blues musician and songwriter Robert Johnson in the whole world. Johnson died in 1938 at the age of twenty-seven, seemingly without leaving behind a photo scrapbook, but if you act now some dude called “sdphan” will sell you a totally unauthenticated third picture for the bargain price of $795,000. Even better? If you apply for an eBay credit card you don’t even have to start making payments for three months. If you’re interested, we also have some great Enron stock for you to take a look at.

Seriously, it’s not as if these images don’t have some obvious similarities, but this supposedly long-lost third shot looks like the dude selected the “aged parchment” backdrop on Photoshop and cut-and-pasted a 1930s vintage shot of a young black dude with intense eyes. We thought this auction frenzy was getting crazy when the whole Velvet Underground fake bid scandal went down a few weeks ago, but at least in that instance the product was real (or so we think). Is the appetite for collectible rock artifacts this powerful? Are we sick of auctions yet?

thats an impressive fake, even witht he cliche backdrop, the nose the eyes and eyebrows, and even the ears have very close similarities, i dont know maybe its just excitment for discovery, but that man has a close resemblance to the legend

it’s not real-upon closer inspection anyone can see the differences in facial features between the two-but some schmuck will end up owning it and then we’ll see it again, thanks to some people’s greed

if it’s real, he should got to a specialist and see if its verified, then have sotheby’s buy it or something.
ebay is NOT a good medium for this trade.

Wow, an old photo of a black dude; buy me a life.

Ha ha.

I hate e-Bay. It’s taken all the skill out of buying shit, and fucked used record store.

The auction is now closed and no one bid the minimum. If someone had bought this photo for the starting price of $795,000, it would have displaced Robert Mapplethorpe’s portrait of Andy Warhol as the 6th most expensive photo of all time.
