Between some surprisingly less-than-shitty sketches featuring naturally comedic “It Boy” Jake Gyllenhaal, the Shins delivered two delicate but confident performances this weekend on Saturday Night Live.
The Portland-via-Albuquerque-based Sub Pop band played “Phantom Limb” (off the new record Wincing the Night Away, due next week) and the famously life-changing “New Slang” (from 2001’s Oh, Inverted World). The Shins’ SNL performance marked the first ever by a band from the twenty-eight-year-old Sub Pop label. Former Sub Pop artists have gone on to play the show (Nirvana being the most famous). But no Sub Pop band had played the show while still officially on the label. (Nirvana had moved on to Geffen by the time they rocked SNL.)
Consequently, this was a big night. And the band seemed to realize it. Bassist Dave Hernandez – clutching a much-emptied glass at the after-party – pointed out his mother mingling amidst SNL cast members like Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg and admitted that he got a little emotional towards the end of the show. “Afterwards, when we were doing that hugging thing,” Hernandez recalled, “it was like ‘Whoa, my mom is here. My mom let me stay up late to watch Elvis Costello on SNL when I was a kid and now she’s here.’”
As the band was preparing to play “New Slang,” legendary SNL producer Loren Michaels ordered them to “make it quick,” but the Shins didn’t hold this against him. Instead they later asked for a photo with him. Half the band tentatively traipsed from their booth to the cool kids’ table in the back of Dock’s restaurant/after-party headquarters where Gyllenhaal (in a trucker hat) and Michaels (in a suit) were chatting. Later Scarlett Johansson showed up and caused a restaurant filled with famous people to pretend not to notice her. For the band, the show was over, but the moment was etched in history.
