The Shins Make Sub Pop History on SNL

1/16/07, 1:31 pm EST

Shins
Between some surprisingly less-than-shitty sketches featuring naturally comedic “It Boy” Jake Gyllenhaal, the Shins delivered two delicate but confident performances this weekend on Saturday Night Live.

The Portland-via-Albuquerque-based Sub Pop band played “Phantom Limb” (off the new record Wincing the Night Away, due next week) and the famously life-changing “New Slang” (from 2001’s Oh, Inverted World). The Shins’ SNL performance marked the first ever by a band from the twenty-eight-year-old Sub Pop label. Former Sub Pop artists have gone on to play the show (Nirvana being the most famous). But no Sub Pop band had played the show while still officially on the label. (Nirvana had moved on to Geffen by the time they rocked SNL.)

Consequently, this was a big night. And the band seemed to realize it. Bassist Dave Hernandez – clutching a much-emptied glass at the after-party – pointed out his mother mingling amidst SNL cast members like Amy Poehler and Andy Samberg and admitted that he got a little emotional towards the end of the show. “Afterwards, when we were doing that hugging thing,” Hernandez recalled, “it was like ‘Whoa, my mom is here. My mom let me stay up late to watch Elvis Costello on SNL when I was a kid and now she’s here.’”

As the band was preparing to play “New Slang,” legendary SNL producer Loren Michaels ordered them to “make it quick,” but the Shins didn’t hold this against him. Instead they later asked for a photo with him. Half the band tentatively traipsed from their booth to the cool kids’ table in the back of Dock’s restaurant/after-party headquarters where Gyllenhaal (in a trucker hat) and Michaels (in a suit) were chatting. Later Scarlett Johansson showed up and caused a restaurant filled with famous people to pretend not to notice her. For the band, the show was over, but the moment was etched in history.

Grant | 1/16/2007, 2:13 pm EST

it’ll probably be on youtube.

goop | 1/16/2007, 2:22 pm EST

Actually, Nirvana was still on Sub Pop when they played (notice the little Sub Pop insignia on the back of yr Nevermind, In Utero, etc…

kinger2 | 1/16/2007, 2:43 pm EST

Wow, must hunt down the performance on the internets. Wincing away will blow people away, its truly their Magnum Opus.

lala | 1/16/2007, 2:45 pm EST

i loved there performance. it was sooo good like all there performances. they are my favorite band and they totaly rocked it

Guy816 | 1/16/2007, 2:46 pm EST

Actually Nirvana wasn’t still on Sub Pop. Sub Pop negotiated with Geffen to put their logo on every release when the band changed labels.

Gotta say I did not see what Rolling Stone sees in The Shins. They had no presence, they played one chord per song with no electricity at all. I could barely hear the singer, who was off mic and camera shy. If this had been a band playing a local gig I would have gone for a beer until the headliner was on. I could see the singer as a solo artist, maybe, at a coffee shop.I got 2/3 through each song and hit fast-forward.

Indie Ninja | 1/16/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Who was the backup singer with the Shins? She’s got talent.

Oddjob | 1/16/2007, 3:20 pm EST

Are you talking about some other Shins performance on SNL? I saw the one this weekend and it proved definitively that the Shins are a band NOT worth investigating further. Their songs are so boring on record that it seems impossible they could be lamer when played live, but sure enough…

EG, I know you love the Shins but “the moment was etched in history”? Let’s not go overboard

The Guy | 1/16/2007, 3:24 pm EST

I missed “Phantom Limb,” but New Slang was very well done.

Indie Ninja, that was Anita Robinson from Viva Voce backing them up. They are touring together right now.

Michele | 1/16/2007, 4:55 pm EST

The Shins were amazing. Youtube videos, anybody? My kid is gonna kill me cos I forgot to tape them.

Nirvanna wasn’t the first band to perform twice on the same SNL episode. The Rolling Stones performed two songs for one 1978 episode at the time of “Some Girls,” and Queen, making their only U.S. TV appearance on SNL, played “Under Pressure” and “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” in 1982. I’m also pretty sure that Paul Simon did two (or three) songs when he appeared on SNL in 1975/76.

Peace

Bizarro Pat Boone | 1/16/2007, 5:43 pm EST

Yeah, I don’t know what the hype is all about. This band should still be in the garage practicing before their night shift at starbucks.

Mike S | 1/16/2007, 5:48 pm EST

Rolling Stone probably has the laziest journalism in the business, it’s sad how far they’ve fallen, nme is the new rolling stone

Steve | 1/16/2007, 5:59 pm EST

“nme is the new rolling stone”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! ! Ouch! Hurt my side…

Is this the “Gomez/Sparklehorse/Oasis/Libe rtines are the next Beatles” NME?

Brian | 1/16/2007, 7:12 pm EST

that was anita from viva voce? I just got into viva voce so i didn’t recognize her, that’s a good band. Anyway, the shins killed it on saturday as usual. But, if you do want to see them live and in top form see them in a small to medium sized venue, at festivals, they’re good but not as good as a small or average sized place. Simply put, the shins are an astounding band and should be reckoned as such.Oh, and SNL is getting better, the writing and sketches are funny again.

singlefinlove | 1/16/2007, 7:24 pm EST

I’m not sure I know what people are talking about when they say the shins suck (in other words obviously). No band really sounds perfect, or performs perfectly, live.

I’ve had the privilege to preview their new CD this past week (about 7 times through) and the band is so musically gifted. It’s a shame that not all of you can see that.

Indie Ninja | 1/16/2007, 9:36 pm EST

Thanks, The Guy. The Shins rule. Also, Oddjob should shut his or her fucking mouth.

J | 1/16/2007, 11:17 pm EST

It didn’t sound as good on TV or something because I thought they sucked. I know they are better than what they gave. I think nerves got the best of them.

notme | 1/17/2007, 8:31 am EST

i dont know about for you guys but new slang never changed my life! Who’s life are they talking about? Not anyone i know

indie queen | 1/18/2007, 4:43 pm EST

the shins are an amazing band, although snl was mediorcre. i was really disappointed with “new slang.” they should have played something from the new album sinstead, say “austrailia.” and for anyone who thinks new slang isnt life changing, you’re insane. i hold tht song closer than anything in the world. i admit, i wouldnt be interested in them soley based on snl, but anyone with good taste likes the shins.

Shamus McCarthy | 1/31/2007, 2:51 pm EST

Watching that performance was about as interesting as staring at a carpet for 9 hours. It was just as ‘historic’ as the dump I took last tuesday.

Awayne | 2/4/2007, 1:22 am EST

I’m 54, I still listen to everything…everything. I am an expert…period. Without considering their who body of works, The Shins have a fresh set of colors. Enough to capture the attention of young folks hungry for something that isn’t ‘quite’ the same old stuff. Four songs together hint at the whole potential (Turn On Me, Gone for Good, Phantom Limb and New Slang) It’s up to them to keep up this pace, and if they’re very lucky, get even better. The point?…A band/artist with a good song or two cannot be dismissed. However, the young and stupid can be. Those of you who have careful, cultured and mature ears…have their validation… from ‘The Expert’ -Awayne

To anyone who found the preformnace below par- you are crazy! and if new slang didnt change your life, its because you have a shallow taste in music, the beauty of the sonf lies within the LYRICS. Just because you don’t have the abili

Shinsfan | 9/3/2009, 1:05 am EST

Anyone who thinks the shins preformance was sub-par is crazy! The shins are a band to rival classics, and if new slang didnt change your life, its because you are to shallow to understand the lyrics.
