R.I.P. TRL??

1/16/07, 11:17 am EST

TRL, MTVRumors are rampant that MTV’s marquee mid-day countdown show Total Request Live is totally over after nearly a decade. Viewer numbers are at an all-time low and the network is scrambling for a way to “re-brand the program” (translation: find something else to put in the slot that people will actually watch). This means that one of the last vestiges of music programming on the “Music Television” channel (yes, folks, that’s what it stands for!) could go the way of the buffalo. We’re already preparing the class-action lawsuit for false advertising.

The fact is, MTV has long ago ceased to be a place for music fans to actually watch their favorite artists or bands. The channel that initiated the onslaught of reality programming with the launch of The Real World way back in 1992 has become a music wasteland. (Yes, we recognize the irony of pointing this out, what with Rolling Stone’s own MTV reality show.) To be fair, the network had its share of music-centric reality programs, many of which were responsible for re-launching fading artists’ careers (The Osbournes, Newlyweds). But even those types of shows with the subtlest music tie-ins are becoming obsolete in favor of dating shows that aim for maximum humiliation and docudramas about over-indulged and over-exposed teenagers (Laguna Beach, My Super Sweet Sixteen).

None of which is to say that MTV isn’t giving viewers exactly what they’re asking for. The network was only catering to America’s voyeuristic impulses that currently dominate our culture (and let’s be honest, human nature). And now that any and all music content can be found online with the click of a mouse, forces seem to have colluded against the former mainstream music behemoth. As ever, MTV seems to be a mirror of pop culture.

Dearest readers, do you still see MTV as a relevant music source? Do you think it ought to just admit that it ain’t about music anymore and simply change its name? And who among you is willing to take poor Vanessa Minnillo in when she gets her pink slip?

I’m just glad that there are more music channels on now like Fuse and IMF, they actually show music videos.

Even worse—-VH1 stands for Video Hits One. None of those things apply to that channel

MTV is McTV: Mind Control Television

Jon | 1/17/2007, 12:06 pm EST

Thank you, “Mr. Dart.” You said it all pretty well for everyone.

Mr. Dart | 1/17/2007, 9:04 am EST

MTV has been a vapid, mind-numbingly stupid excuse for a network for a very long time. Instead of playing music videos (old or new) they emphasize the importance having having a pimped-out ride. They’ve replaced cutting edge shows like Headbanger’s Ball with shit like My Super Sweet Sixteen, a morally reprehensible show that makes me wish harsher eating disorders on more spoiled brats than I probably should.

Notwithstanding, “I Want My MTV” was a battle cry for the counterculture of the mid 80’s. Upon seeing where MTV has gone, I changed my mind. I don’t want it anymore… you can have it back.

K36 | 1/17/2007, 3:42 am EST

You mean MTV actually still shows music videos?…That’s right-this is 2007 and not 1987.MTV should change its name to RTV-Reality Television because all they show is Real World and Road Rules,The Best Of Real World,Road Rules Greatest and The Real World VS. Road Rules.Thank God for MTV2 and VH1.I haven’t watched MTV in ages because all they have shown are Real World and crap like that. The last time I watched MTV was when they had Beavis & Butthead….Damn,I miss the days when MTV counted for something…

jim | 1/17/2007, 3:25 am EST

“Music Television” is long dead. MTV is nothing more than a sinister and yet decrepit medium that feeds off the masses that assume they are getting entertainment. What the viewers dont know is they are staring down their own parasite, who in return spews the vile scum of which it has sucked dry from its host (being the most disturbing side of human nature played out in shitty not-so-reality TV). Thanks to MTV, the line drawn between reality and “Reality TV” has has further blurred. screw MTV.

JD | 1/17/2007, 2:00 am EST

The eighties were the golden age of music video. How I miss those days. At least Canada’s Muchmusic has Ed the Sock.

Josh | 1/17/2007, 1:54 am EST

Mtv should not be called Mtv. It just makes no sense. Mtv stands for “Music television”. There is NOTHING on mtv that can validate the name anymore (As far as i know since i never watch it ever). The tube and Vh1 classic are the only music channels worth watching since they are in fact music channels. Just call Mtv something like “Shit for 12-18 year old girls Tv” that would be far more appropriate. I still remember being 12,13,14 when Mtv was actually a music station. It’s really pathetic and sad that this is what “Music television” is now. And Rolling Stone can really cut the bullshit. Don’t knock the network when you’re on it….Pathetic..and sad. Just like Mtv.

Geoff | 1/17/2007, 1:43 am EST

You people that bash Rolling Stone for having no relevance to music have no idea what you are talking about. Did you ever see issues from the 70’s and 80’s? Guarantee you they did the same thing they’re doing now, following cultural trends in order to gain more readership. But hey, here’s a newsflash: every fucking magazine does this. Even newspapers do it. Get a clue. Rolling Stone might push a lot of stupid crap in their magazine, but if you look through it, the core of the magazine still remains music. I think their last issue is a pretty good testament to this, with extensive coverage of James Brown and Ahmet Ertegun.

There have been a ton of great articles I have read in Rolling Stone in the last two years. Articles about Jimi Hendrix, Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones (again), just to name a few that come to the top of my head. I found the article they recently printed about Paul Nelson was incredibly fascinating and well written. And I always find myself taking something from the magazine. And to those of you who say Rolling Stone never had any musical relevance, I come back to you with these names: Greil Marcus, David Fricke, Paul Nelson, Kurt Loder, Rob Sheffield, among others. These guys are tremendous writers and authorities of music.

MTV, on the other hand, bears no relevance with music. Even the shit they play is terrible. Showing nothing but “Emo” bands like Panic! at the Disco and My Chemical Romance, gimmick rappers like Lil’ John, and complete no talents like Paris Hilton are no way to try to show that the M still exists in MTV. This station wouldn’t be caught dead with someone like Bob Dylan or Eric Clapton on it. Someone said it earlier and I agree completely, MTV had their chance to reclaim some of their past glory when Live 8 came around, and they royally fucked it up. The thing that has killed MTV, more than anything, is Digital Cable and Satelitte. Back when there could only be 48 stations on a cable system, MTV was a great concept. Now it has no reason not to become just like every basic cable station that exists out there.

I’m not trying sound like a complete Rolling Stone diehard, but some of the criticizm they receive is pretty damn unfair, to be honest.

Catlin | 1/17/2007, 12:34 am EST

Thank goodness for Vh1 Classic. That channel shows what good music sounded like. No reality shows, no overproduced award shows just music. I love it.

TecunX & Night Tracks | 1/17/2007, 12:19 am EST

Maybe MTV was a calculated business at its birth, maybe it remained so until the mid ’90s, but that was not apparent. MTV were darn good at remaining at the cusp of cool.
Watching MTV now feels calculated, down to the last penny. It is so shamelessly targeting the 12- 16 demographic market, that it becomes insulting to watch.
MTV is no longer relevant as a music source, It has become a cruel lifestyle dictator.
How many minutes a week do I watch MTV now? probably the TV commercials for 4 or 5.
Apparently,to them, all the amazing videos have been shot, and all the memorable songs sung.
But as mentioned in the other posts, it is a business, and like a business it is being run.
At least there is Youtube for the music fans.

alex | 1/16/2007, 11:49 pm EST

Now that music is packaged for those with even the shortest attention spans (i.e. Ipod, Itunes), it’s not surprising that MTV has basically jumped ship on the “M” part in their name. This faux-reality tv is bullshit and has well worn out its welcome, especially on networks that are supposed to show us music. It’s sad but the current state of the union makes me nostalgic for the Madonna and Backstreet Boys videos of 1998. It’s really better to burn out than fade away, and MTV is an empty shell of what it used to be. not MY generation, no way

mike | 1/16/2007, 10:47 pm EST

If TRL ended Id be a happy man.

If MTV as a whole just faded away Id be a happier one.

cheesecrop | 1/16/2007, 10:11 pm EST

Perhaps the saddest thing about this whole situation is that MTV once really did matter. I can recall the early years and I am not exaggerating when I say that it felt like you and your friends could have been the station programmers ( well most of the time). MTV did have a run from 82-83 till about 97-98 where it was the place to go, but the internet age has pretty much swallowed it up.

Jorod | 1/16/2007, 9:30 pm EST

I have hated MTV for almost 20 years because they developed a broadcasting version of Alzheimer’s; they forgot what they were and how to do it. Unplugged, Yo! MTV Raps, Headbangers Ball were its core. The Real world is as far from reality as possible. Show me a program where 5 kids have to get real jobs and barely afford a burned out crack house for a season. not 5 untalented cute people living in a house P Diddy can’t afford.
Anyway, I gave up on MTV when I discovered MuchMusic, then my heart was broken upon its demise (at least that channel offered history, and access to the music scene) or rebirth as FUSE.
Either way, I get my music from the real music channels these days: the mom and pop stores where the clerks are in the know, not the hype.

nurserock1 | 1/16/2007, 8:58 pm EST

I keep wondering why bands even bother to put out Videos anymore. They’re obsolete in everyway. No one has the attention span to watch them….and MTV/VH1 don’t play them….so whats the point. It is an advertising medium that no one ever sees

Victoria | 1/16/2007, 7:47 pm EST

MTV really sucks becuase they don’t play music anymore. It’s nice though to see how rich and fabulous the spoiled brats are on My Super Sweet Sixteen right? TRL is the only music the channel has and they play 45 second clips of the song. I’m a teenager and I find it unbearable and I’m part of the demographic they’re appealing to.

dyer | 1/16/2007, 6:16 pm EST

Fuck MTV, VH1, and Fuse! The only interesting way to watch music videos is on IMF.
Rolling Stone is only marginally important…..

hey joe | 1/16/2007, 5:39 pm EST

Any music that you happen to hear on MTV is cut short for commercials anyway.
It really should change its name.

Scream | 1/16/2007, 5:31 pm EST

Watching MTV makes me want to rip my eyes out. It’s terrible, just like most of the American music culture right now.

If I want real music Ill watch VH1 (which kinda sucks too, but is slightly less horrifying than MTV), or Fuse. Damn my cable company for not putting VH1 Classic on its basic plan, or Id be watching that instead.

jill hives | 1/16/2007, 4:48 pm EST

i stopped watching mtv right around the same time i sold my television set.

Ivan | 1/16/2007, 4:47 pm EST

Mtc needs to change its medium. It needs to offer more in-depth inerview, more documentary style programing, and more videos and less cameo’s. Host suck on MTV. And You Tube, replaced mtv. So mtv needs to change the format of its show in order to distinguish itself from sites like myspace and youtube.

elfshu- | 1/16/2007, 4:34 pm EST

MTV needs to play some elfshu or experience punishment

sam | 1/16/2007, 4:23 pm EST

MTV might just be one of the worst channels on t.v. They never play music!

Betty | 1/16/2007, 4:16 pm EST

MTV sucks, it was ok in the 80s but it began sucking more and more.THe only thing that ever was good is when they used to do Headbanger’s Ball.

Brent | 1/16/2007, 4:13 pm EST

MTV still uses music quite a bit… how many times do people hear others talk about “that song I heard on [insert MTV show]” during segways and background music. That doesn’t make MTV still an authority, but it does make it somewhat relevant (as MTV can still help shift music trend by what they play in the background).

Then again, is ROLLING STONE still relevant as a music authority? Maybe, maybe, pop culture, but most of our institutions on music authority have disipated into irrelevancy.

rightinthenuts | 1/16/2007, 4:04 pm EST

Video KILLED the radio star, MTV killed the video star…

MTV has not been relevant in many years, it has lost it’s focus and identity, and like many great things is dying a slow death.. The Real World give me a break. Thank God I don’t work in the music business anymore…R.I.P

Chuck | 1/16/2007, 3:47 pm EST

MTV is trying to appeal to 12-16 year-olds. Of course you people don’t like it. It’s like asking if Seventeen Magazine has fallen off the radar. What needs to be understood here is that if MTV played videos all the time, it would’t get ratings, and would no longer exist (at least not on basic cable). People can watch videos on the internet. Why would they sit through 5 videos they don’t like to see one they do like?

ken vail jr. | 1/16/2007, 3:34 pm EST

I remember seeing MTV for the first time in the spring of 1982. It was so incredibly cool and entertaining. In recent years it is literally PAINFUL to sit and watch. I tried watching that reality show about the ROLLING STONE interns and that seemed very calculated to me. Even VH1 has gone down the shithole, though VH1 CLASSIC has a lot of great stuff on it for the music lover and afficiando like myself. Enough fucking ROAD RULES and THE REAL WORLD already!!!!!

B-Rett | 1/16/2007, 3:33 pm EST

MTV BLOWZ.
It was cool back in the 80’s and Nirvana was was the last good “MTV” band.

likroper.com | 1/16/2007, 3:28 pm EST

RS = GOOD

it is difficult to put out a new issue every two weeks for twenty years and even stay half-way relevant, but i think RS has…

RS is a little bit gossip; a little bit politics; a little bit environmental activism; a little bit new music review; and a little bit zany, which is good if you ask me…

and let’s face it; RS is a magazine which ultimately supports freedom by letting us all say whatever we damn well please on this blog, and i like that…

Mezzanine | 1/16/2007, 3:19 pm EST

Mtv sucks! Their award shows suck, as a matter of fact all of their shows suck. Where’s the music? And, most important, Where’s the good music? How much J-lo and Cristina Aguilera can they feed us?

likroper.com | 1/16/2007, 3:11 pm EST

i’ve got it; perhaps they should start a new channel called vh2, then transfer all the present non-music related mtv/vh1 programming into it - or just keep vh1 for all non-music related programming, and mtv for all music related programming or something…it’s not that all the shows are bad, they are just on the wrong channels…

either way; mtv and vh1 both have been in a constant state of flux since the beginning of their existence, and this will likely not change anytime soon…

Gibson | 1/16/2007, 3:11 pm EST

MTV has never been relivent, they just play whats in the now and leave it as quick as they started to play it

GG | 1/16/2007, 3:07 pm EST

Agreed. This really isn’t news or news-worthy. Who cares about TRL? They haven’t showed videos on the regular on MTV for some time now. Yeah, they show some in the mornings but that’s about it. So videos are really a joke…it’s cool that bands still make them, but what does it matter if they aren’t played much. MTV hasn’t been in the game for some time. They certainly have turned their backs on rock music– yeah, before someone jumps on that statement, if you have MTV2 you might see some between Sucker Free videos or whatever…still rock videos are just hard to find. Rolling Stone too shouldn’t talk (although the article admitted this), their stupid reality show, with people who obviously aren’t worthy to interview any real musicians is taking up as much time as any other reality show on MTV that allows for less music videos to be shown.

RSMAG SUCKS | 1/16/2007, 3:03 pm EST

You are right f-face. Rolling Stone has always sucked. However, you don’t think that it is worse now. Pop music culture is worse now because they’ve had 50 years to get their propaganda down to a science. Instead of progressing with art, they are progressing with marketing. Rolling Stone is just capitalizing on ignorant teenie boppers and morons.

RushFan | 1/16/2007, 2:55 pm EST

This is news? MTV has not been relevant in about 15 years.

f-face | 1/16/2007, 2:39 pm EST

c dub ya 71 | 1/16/2007, 2:09 pm EST

This whole story is a joke. RS - for the most part is a joke. There are a ton of other pubs that get it, and provide better resources for music. I see you tried to smooth over the fact you have a reality show on said network, again, you are a joke, joke, joke. MTV has not been MTV since they cancelled 120 Minutes, Yo MTV Raps and Headbangers Ball. Those shows, were about music, showed music videos and interviewed artists who weren’t always there to pimp out their latest fashion line or Movie appearance. MYV has added to reason music has become more disposable. I weap for the future.

bluemooon | 1/16/2007, 2:06 pm EST

This write up is not only a statement of the obvious, but hilariously hypocritical. Rolling Stone a revelant music source? I have to giggle when I even give this thought a moment of my time. I lost the small drop of respect that I had left for your magazine in 2002. Your Women In Rock issue featured Britney Spears and Shakira on the front cover. Absent from the cover of your magazine were most of the true female “musicians” of today. I fail to see how Britney Spears brings anything beneficial to rock music or has any merit as a female musician. Had your issue been called “Best Selling Female Artists” or “Pop Stars On Regular MTV Rotation”, I may have been more forgiving of the issue. I remain flabbergasted by the fact that so many truly talented female musicians were either ignored or only given brief mention (ie- Tori Amos, Ani Difranco). That’s right.. You picked your cover models straight from the graveyard known as MTV. Between your pages we find former mouseketeers and hipster BS. I guess I have one thing nice thing to say: Sufjan Stevens was giving a page in your mag recently. Bravo…

goop | 1/16/2007, 2:00 pm EST

You’re wrong, Lauren. MTV switched to reality TV because Nielsen ratings couldn’t come up with a ratings system that would gauge viewers minute-by-minute viewing habits. Everyone USED to watch MTV but switch stations for vidis they didn’t like, artificially deflating MTV’s ratings…1/2 hour shows were MTV’s solution to this problem, and “reality” TV is so cheap that it was the best bet…

In addition, there’s nothing real about “reality” tv (RS’ crappy show included), so its no more voyeurisitc a platform than the game show…with its artificially-induced scenarios for exhibitionists to embarace themselves in front of millions…

BTW, do you think RS’ best writers, David Frick and Rob Sheffield would’ve ever had a shot to write, were they vetted through television? Both look like rock critics, which is to say, not very photogenic…and, yet, they’re better at what they do than most anybody else…just wondering…

jason | 1/16/2007, 1:58 pm EST

I agree with the article. MTV is a reflection of pop culture. A bunch of masterbating teens. Then again, what’s with this reality show? Conforming to what you stand against??? Doesn’t make sense to me. I enjoy reading RS, but stop putting these no talent ass clowns on the cover. If you have someone that writes your songs for you, and choreographs your dance moves, this crap should be buried on pg. 72. Where are the Rock Stars when we need them?

Yes I am old but didn’t TRL come from a previous show in the 80’s called Dial MTV?

Most of the requested bands then were hair metal bands. They dominated the request lines. At least they played the entire song/video.

I watch VH1 classic for the older bands no matter what genre and just get my new band info off of www.nme.com

MTV sucks!

BR | 1/16/2007, 1:49 pm EST

MTV has not been relevant for years. Everytime I turn to MTV2 or Fuse, I see the same trendy horrible emo band. Commerical rock radio plays the same 10 songs over and over. Satellite radio and Pandora is where it’s at for new music.

Is this NEW to anyone? Mtv has not been about music for at least 10 years. Still, like the article says, Mtv just mirrors pop culture. It’s only pumping out what the people want to see. It’s a downward spiral, American culture is sliding, and Mtv is adjusting, therefore the culture keeps on sliding along. Oh well…Mtv is not where I get my music fix.

RSMAG SUCKS | 1/16/2007, 1:28 pm EST

You think because you pay the smallest attention to actual artists like Cat Power and Devendra Banhart, that you are somehow relevant. You treat real artists like their on the fringe, and spew crap all day about meaningless junk. It’s okay, everyone knows your magazine is hovering around the Jerry Springer level. I haven’t bought one of your stupid issues in years. I give my money to magazines with some substance…..LOSERS!!!

meaningofsoul | 1/16/2007, 1:10 pm EST

Rolling Stone, you are a joke. When was the last time YOU were relevant to music. Corporate trash.

charliemapleton | 1/16/2007, 1:07 pm EST

When you think about the history,TRL was a lofty, ultra cool show that beacame the most watched show because some of the pop groups at the time, were actually talented(don’t hate,I know some are laying low and are going solo today, but you KNEW they COULD sing),and Carson-as well-became an overnight success(or rather,an AFTERNOON success). It just came to the point where it got too sugary because there was(and still is)a new generation of kids tuning in.And if you catch a glimpse of TRL today, you notice-it’s just like I said-a new generation of MORE 15,18 year olds ranting and raving, just like some of us twentysomethings today were back when we tuned in.But it goes to show, things change.Just like Nickelodeon-all the great shows(Inspector Gadget,Count Duckula,Salute Your Shorts, among others)us twentysomethings used to watch are gone and the new shows have been ushered in(Spongebob,Fairly Oddparents, etc.)because not only there’s a new generation of kids tuning in but sure enough…THINGS CHANGE!As far as the other lackluster daytime shows on MTV,I guess-like you said rs.com-seemed to have overshadow TRL,whereas I thought TRL had more staying power than that.At least the 10 Spot has-not only but what I think-some of the best shows by far(Wild ‘N’ Out,Rob & Big,etc.).But if this is the end of an era,so be it.It would be fitting to play that Boyz II Men song we’re all truly familiar with.At least I will miss seeing LaLa,though(laughs).

GradStudent | 1/16/2007, 12:59 pm EST

As someone who rememebers when MTV first came out, it has indeed been disappointing to see it slide into irrelevance. But I think the sign that they were no longer willing to even try to be a music channel came during the Live 8 concerts last year. Rather than simply showing the performers during this important event, they chose to do “instant nostalgia” and just talk to celebrities and artists about how important it was. Thus, people watched it online; the old MTV would have been the place to watch it–now they can’t be bothered. It’s as if they can’t conceive that people get their music from other places.

Mike | 1/16/2007, 12:58 pm EST

“It’s” means “it is.” “Its” is the possessive, as in it owns something. You would think that “journalists” would know this and would correctly write that “To be fair, the network had its share ….”

LSLS | 1/16/2007, 12:53 pm EST

I think Rolling Stone has become even worse than MTV. You promote bubble gum B.S. and trendy crap that you know sucks. You don’t look for artists that take chances, and you know it.

Travis Schucker | 1/16/2007, 12:44 pm EST

I think TRL needs to be dropped. MTV is no longer a good music provider to the people and fans of music. They hardly ever play music videos and when they do, it always has a commercial after the video. There is never back to back and you have to watch two 10 second MTV advertisting videos. MTV should just change it RTV because they are more loyal television than music! TRL is a prime example. It plays videos that high schooler enjoy of pop music and only plays the video for a brief 30 seconds.

MTV has not been the major conduit for music on the television medium for years. It hasn’t needed to be. MTV is a business first and foremost. Thus, they are going to design programming that sells. The limited portion of MTV that still is devoted to music is more aptly described as the television’s version of the radio payola scandal. Only featuring those artists backed by large and rich record labels.

“were so hurt that people watch mtv more than they read our magazine”

You guys need to grow some hair on the kiwis

Wilco Boy | 1/16/2007, 12:20 pm EST

Jon B. | 1/16/2007, 12:20 pm EST

There are stupid people no matter where you go.

Freako | 1/16/2007, 12:18 pm EST

hey wilco do you have a problem with how hot people are because most people in america enjoy things like that and in case you havent noticed your probably the only person in the world that doesnt enjoy that kind of stuff

Jack | 1/16/2007, 12:17 pm EST

talking about rolling stone

Jack | 1/16/2007, 12:16 pm EST

you are a bunch of hypocrites

Johnny boy | 1/16/2007, 12:16 pm EST

Rollingstone,

next time your gonna criticize yourself you might want to realize it and like not criticize yourself. just a thought.

Wilco Boy | 1/16/2007, 12:14 pm EST

MTV,just as Rolling Stone, has killed what rock music is supposed to be about. That is quality songwriting and songs, not how “hot” you are. The death of MTV and Rolling Stone could not come any sooner.

Mindless | 1/16/2007, 12:13 pm EST

i disagree MTV does play music…..after every show during the credits

Jack | 1/16/2007, 12:13 pm EST

yeah the rolling stone show is wack

Janie | 1/16/2007, 12:11 pm EST

Yes MTV is now RTV. I usually watch videos online now. Yes they do show videos late at night or early in the morning, but that’s about it. I don’t blame them for selling out. Its all about the Benjamins baby. This what the people what and this is what they get.

Will | 1/16/2007, 12:11 pm EST

its on cbs where i live…….but whatever…….did you see that girl who dropped the f bomb on mtv………she was going to get fired anyway

DGG | 1/16/2007, 12:10 pm EST

Rolling Stone has always bashed MTV for the same reasons that Scientology bashes psychiatry; they’re both trying to neutralize what they recognize as a competitor.

But yeah, I thought that having a Rolling Stone reality show on MTV, besides being a big time capitulization, would have called for some kind of moratorium on the MTV bashing.

So right back at you, RS, is bashing MTV for programming too many reality TV shows now that yours is one of them “ironic” or just plain stupid?

Buster C | 1/16/2007, 12:07 pm EST

Thank God for Fuse and Youtube, nothing like a Classic Dio video to liven uo the weekend.

ryan | 1/16/2007, 12:06 pm EST

Jeopardy is on ABC, dumbass.

Dmouth | 1/16/2007, 12:05 pm EST

How ironic that Rolling Stone is talking about mtv not being a relevant music source. What a fucking joke. This magazine covers the likes of Justin Timberlake and wants to be credible? Give me a break.

Will | 1/16/2007, 12:02 pm EST

I kinda of like MTV now, than then. You gotta admit those shows are entertaining. If you want to watch Jeopardy watch CBS.

likroper.com | 1/16/2007, 12:00 pm EST

the universe is in constant change, but the only thing that never changes is that things will always be the same…

Derek Ayyyyyytch. | 1/16/2007, 11:57 am EST

To hell with mtv. Sorry mtv2, this means u as well. I’m a FUSE-MAN now. The DIVE=Grrrrrrreat :)

Brian | 1/16/2007, 11:57 am EST

MTV really just needs to give it up….

Paul...Where's Kansas? | 1/16/2007, 11:54 am EST

MTV is and should be dead in the eyes of those watching television for music and music videos. Many old school avids of Rolling Stone would argue that it has spread itself out too far as well. I still refer to it for album/movie reviews because of the almighty Travers.

See You at the Races | 1/16/2007, 11:54 am EST

I love it when people point out that MTV doesn’t show videos as though this were news. And also as though it were true. They don’t show many videos, but I watch them in the morning before work. There they are. Music videos. On MTV. Alert the media.

AIsForApathy | 1/16/2007, 11:45 am EST

Rolling Stone reality show is rather disgusting, but regardless Rolling Stone is where I go for music reviews and for plenty of information on music. MTV has not been for music for a long time, and it has been even longer that rock was a highlight of the network. MTV2 is probably the closest to Music Television, with the Headbanger’s Ball and such. Music has died for Music Television, it has been a long time since I have ever watched MTV for music.

Zachra | 1/16/2007, 11:40 am EST

MTV has not been a relevant music source since the last Buzz Bin video aired, and even then it was pushing it.

scs8 | 1/16/2007, 11:35 am EST

No…and neither is Rolling Stone
