How’s about this for a double bill I caught in 1979 at a drive-in theater in Auburn, Washington: “Rock’n’ Roll High School” with The Ramones, and The Who documentary, “The Kids Are Alright.” Through huge ’70s speakers.

WOODSTOCK
I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
Almost Famous

But the best of all time is Eat The Document-the doc made on Dylan’s first electric tour with The Band, Pennebaker behind the lens. The first shot is Dylan doing a line off a grand piano and asking the waiter in the room, “Have you heard of me?”

CGEffect | 1/12/2007, 7:33 pm EST

“Rude Boy” featuring The Clash as themselves, but the funny part is they’re credited in the movie as just bandmembers and are referred to in the credits to what instrument they play and such. Love the movie, loved it!

Scott | 1/12/2007, 7:39 pm EST

How can you leave “The Last Waltz” off of this list?

Robbie K | 1/12/2007, 7:41 pm EST

I’m with Scott. You can’t hold the Neil Diamond cameo against them.

“Cocksucker Blues”, chronicling the Rolling Stones’ 1972 tour. Enough to scare any young kid away from ever wanting to be a rock star. Good luck getting your hands on it though.

Beltway Greg | 1/12/2007, 10:26 pm EST

Meet The Ruttles: Christ, when I saw this one, I was very stupid in the 70s, I thought it was the truth for the first 30 minutes or so.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains: A pic about a ficticious girl group starring Diane Lane.

GoTerps | 1/12/2007, 10:47 pm EST

Quadrophenia was an awesome movie–rich cinematography, great music of course, and Sting as the Ace Face! Here are my favorites:

1) The Kids Are Alright (The Who)
2) Quadrophenia (The Who)
3) Tommy (The Who)
4) Live at the Isle of Wight (The Who)
5) Rust Never Sleeps (Neil Young)
6) Rattle & Hum (U2)
7) Woodstock
8) The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus
9) No Nukes (particularly the Springsteen section)
10) The Concert for New York City

This is Spinal Tap!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KingLeer | 1/12/2007, 10:58 pm EST

You are all crazy. We all know that the “Last Waltz” is the finest of all rock films. The top five:

1) The Last Waltz
2) Gimme Shelter
3) Don’t Look Back
4) A Hard Day’s Night
5) This Is Spinal Tap

Spinal Tap is not actually a documentary (it’s a mockumentary rockumentary), but it needs to be included, given that it is the finest comedic film in the post-”Dr. Strangelove” era.

J-Roo | 1/12/2007, 11:00 pm EST

Still Crazy – excellent 90s brit comedy. Rent it.

Brett M | 1/13/2007, 12:13 am EST

“Gimme Shelter” and the practically unseen COCKSUCKER BLUES. But I like the list, though. “Tommy” sucked balls beyond belief.
The Last Waltz is also worthy of recommendation.

jill hives | 1/13/2007, 12:38 am EST

i was in a rush when i mentioned the kiss tv movie (which is really dreadful) – now that im drunk and have come to my senses, i must add “the electrifying conclusion” to the list – it is the dvd of guided by voices’ last ever show – they play for fours, it’s new year’s eve, and there’s a bar on stage. totally awesome.

yeah, hey RS editors remember that issue of Rolling Stone back like i think 3 years ago where you put Jessica Simpson on the cover (i know, dont worry i’ve got good news) and you came out with a list of the best rock movies/dvds ever? And this said list actually had good movies on it like The Last Waltz (my personal favorite rock movie), High Fidelity (close second), and– even though it was narcissism– Almost Famous?

All these movies as opposed to laughable, self-parodying, wreaking piles of shit like Purple Rain?

At least you didn’t put The Wall, or Tommy movie adaptations up there. I’ll give you bonus points for that

JackWhiteKY | 1/13/2007, 9:56 am EST

**The Last Waltz**

It’s only the best rock and roll movie ever made.
Big time Bill, big time…

Jerry Cramer | 1/13/2007, 10:19 am EST

A Hard Day’s Night
The Kids are Alright
Spinal Tap
Led Zeppelin (Not ‘Song Remains the Same’)
Rock and Roll High School

Troy Red | 1/13/2007, 12:19 pm EST

I never understood why “A Hard Day’s Night” is said to be so great. It’s good, for sure, but brilliant? No way. “Help” was funny, and had a real plot. “Yellow Submarine” is one of the quintessential psychodelic films, and once again, has a real plot. I could watch either Help or YS over and over again and still enjoy them. “A Hard Day’s Night” gets boring fast.

Mario | 1/13/2007, 12:39 pm EST

1. A Hard day’s night. It reflects 4 young guys that didn’t believe what was happening to them just being themselves.

2. U2 Rattle & Hum. I was 16 when I saw this, I get stunned.

3. Depeche Mode’s 101. The first reality show I saw.

4. Pink Floyd The Wall. I don’t like PF too much, but is a great movie.

5. Prince’s Purple Rain.

tibi928 | 1/13/2007, 12:42 pm EST

The Last Waltz

Visual: SLC PUNK- Perfect film in recording the dreariness of young adulthood, change Punk to Grunge and we’ve got a winner.
Acting: Coal Miners Daughter-Sissy Spacek was awesome and looked like Loretta Lynn, note to the filmmakers get someone that looks so similar to Cobain its creepy
Storylne: Almost Famous- Cameron Crowe finds the funny and highlights the films dramatic irony…. Best Line: THE NO MORE PLANES TOUR/ the band hates eachother but they still have to rock…kudos.

How in the hell is it that only one person has mentioned “The Filth and the Fury”? That is one of the most insightful and entertaining documentaries ever. Period!

And as far as straight up concert films go, U2’s Elevation tour is even better than the Zoo Tv tour DVD, which, was arguably the greatest rock tour ever.

“Horror at Party Beach,” circa 1964, is possibly one of the worst films of all time, but it features an awesome “everyman” band from that era. It belongs on the list since there’s only one decent music movie anyway (”The Last Waltz”), and this 1964 loser is better than any of the other films mentioned. “Don’t Look Back” ain’t a music movie! It’s a documentary in which Dylan shows our British brothers just how rude Americans can be.

Melissa | 1/15/2007, 12:51 pm EST

Ok, ok, You have the Documentary Rock Movie and You have the Kitchy Hollywood Rock Movie, and You have the Rock Biobic.

There are so many good Rock Documentaries and to really have appreciated them, you had to be there when they first came out, otherwise you may have lost the mood or flavor of the “moment”.
Who could ever forget the Open Eyed feeling of seeing “A Hard Days Night” in the mid sixties and the heady pre MTV film footage of the mop top four. There was screaming in the theater as pubescents across the globe hurried to copy thier Carnaby Street vibe and humor. Afterwards and after many drugs, hairgrowth, and patchwork bellbottems came Gimme Shelter and Woodstock. East Coast and West Coast rock nightmares immortalized in hellish detail for all to see. If you were actually “at” either one of these discusting Pop Fests you wish you didn’t have to remember it. “Monterey Pop” summer of love fest where we first saw Janis Joplin and Hendrix. Wow, even the Rolling Stones and Brian Jones were seen in the crowd. This was brought to us by The Mamas & Papas before they sunk into Hollywood Drug Drama. Who could could forget Mama Cass mouthing “Oh WOW” after Janis sang. Into the severnties we waltzed with “The Last Waltz” with the allstar cast of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, and Eric Clapton playing with Robbie Robertson and the rest of the gang. We all had questions about why there was a last waltz because the music was so good…. Why did it have to be “The Last”? The best of the best was “The Song remains the Same” because who were the most mystical of all Rock Gods? Led Zepplin of course… But as far as Bio Opics go…Oliver Stones “The Doors” really captures the mood of it all and the essence of The DOors, La, Psychidelia, and Jim Morrison. So yes, as far as Hollywood goes…you can shove Quadraphenia and Almost Famous up the preverbal place the sun don’t shine. What junk…Then of Course there is Purple Rain in its Fredericks of Hollywood Funk Glory…No one can argue with the music or the story which was good but who could believe people dressed like that in Minnesota of all plays but still it worked and goes in the top 10. Later we had U2 and Rattle and Hum…resonant, manly, silly, but black and white so Edges Guitar was as stark in the movies as in sound. Since then, I can’t think of any other good Rock Flicks.

DavidnLA | 1/15/2007, 12:58 pm EST

I agree with almost everyone here. the list is too short. Song remains the same even rock star was pretty darn good. I can’t beleive that rolling stone botched this list.

Scott | 1/15/2007, 1:01 pm EST

“The Kids are Alright” is tops. I’d leave in “This Is Spinal Tap,” but “Purple Rain”? I dunno, Prince is a great guitarist – the solo in “Purple Rain” still is great – but the film isn’t in the top 5. “The Last Waltz” would be in the top 5 for me, if it weren’t for all of the overdubs (only Levon Helm’s voice and drums, and the guests’ voices, truly are live) – and it wasn’t The Band’s “last” show. They carried on without Robbie Robertson, recruiting The Cate Brothers as replacements for one or two tours in the 1980s.
The Beatles’ “Let it Be” has to be in the top 5, too. The rooftop concert at the end is worth admission to the entire film.
“Gimme Shelter” is a good contender for the top 5, although I prefer Pink Floyd, The Who and The Beatles to The Stones (I do like Mick and the boys).

Peace
