“The Sweet Escape”: Music to Your Eyes

1/11/07, 1:31 pm EST

You have to give it to Gwen Stefani. She rushed out a half-baked, disappointing second solo disk, last month, which is struggling to go platinum (read Rob Sheffield’s review of The Sweet Escape here). But the girl DOES know how to put together a cool video. This clip, for Gwen’s new single (also titled “The Sweet Escape”) is a swirl of gold plated, over-the-top awesomeness. Gwen strikes a series of poses (pin-up girl, vixen, tomboy) while palling around in a glinting SUV with Akon. The tune—despite an absurdly catchy baseline—initially sounded flat and uninspired compared to Gwen’s LAMB work. Now it’s starting to grow on us. Maybe it’s the clothes. How many sartorial ensembles can Gwen possible put together out of one roll of stretchy jail-bird striped jersey. Watch and learn.

What do you think of this video? Is it possible for a video to change (for the better or worse) the way you hear a song?

gwen stefani has totally lost touch with good music. “No doubt” had some good tunes. She has become her own Yoko Ono.

Her career as a legitimate musician is over. She should stick to fashion and bleaching her eyebrows…

I give a rat’s ass.

Akon’s “Woo-hoo’s” are annoying. Otherwise, the music is fair. The bassline is similar to Madonna. Does Gwen have anything original or does she just like to rip off of other artists? The video itself does nothing for the song. Gwen being cute, but diva-like. Yeah, the world needs another friggin’ diva.

Oh. My. God.
How in the hell is this the same girl who sang, “Sorry I’m not home right now/I’m walking in my spider web?” Leave a message, honey.

I like it, but I the rest of the album kinda sucks. I miss the old Gwen. She was so cool and her voice was unique. Now she seems to have a big head.

I miss the old Gwen too, she seemed alot more laid back and down to earth. Now she takes herself way too seriously.
