You have to give it to Gwen Stefani. She rushed out a half-baked, disappointing second solo disk, last month, which is struggling to go platinum (read Rob Sheffield’s review of The Sweet Escape here). But the girl DOES know how to put together a cool video. This clip, for Gwen’s new single (also titled “The Sweet Escape”) is a swirl of gold plated, over-the-top awesomeness. Gwen strikes a series of poses (pin-up girl, vixen, tomboy) while palling around in a glinting SUV with Akon. The tune—despite an absurdly catchy baseline—initially sounded flat and uninspired compared to Gwen’s LAMB work. Now it’s starting to grow on us. Maybe it’s the clothes. How many sartorial ensembles can Gwen possible put together out of one roll of stretchy jail-bird striped jersey. Watch and learn.
What do you think of this video? Is it possible for a video to change (for the better or worse) the way you hear a song?
