Simon Sez: Dylan Is a Dud

1/10/07, 2:55 pm EST

Bob Dylan Simon CowellWe have always been in Simon Cowell’s corner. His expert evisceration of American Idol contestants is unequivocally entertaining. So we used to feel pretty confident that there was nothing he could do to truly offend or horrify us. After all that is his THING…and nobody does it better. But then he went and shit talked Bob Dylan.

According to the New York Post, Cowell recently indirectly refuted the long-standing (and patently ridiculous) rumor that the American troubadour might appear as a guest judge on a future American Idol by saying that he prefers Kelly Clarkson’s music to Bob Dylan’s. We’re presuming this was said without sarcasm…or drugs.

“I’ve never bought a Dylan record,” claims the Idol maker. “A singing poet? It just bores me to tears.” But he didn’t stop there. He goes on to say that a Dylan-inspired season of American Idol would suck. “I’ve got to tell you, if I had 10 Dylans in the final of American Idol, we would not be getting 30 million viewers a week. I don’t believe the Bob Dylans of this world would make American Idol a better show.”

We used to respect Simon as a savvy social scientist—someone who gets the most out of the lowest common denominator within our culture. But we though he actually KNEW what good music was…even if it wasn’t what he was selling. Evidently we were wrong and now we hate him.

But that’s us…how do YOU feel about Simon’s Bob bashing?

Well, I can tell by yr comments, RS, that y’all are just a few of the schmucks that make it possible for this vampire to make hundreds of millions of dollars off of his demeaning comments, cruel humor, callous records and slave-like record contracts.

Congrats! Every week you insure that Simon will die 100x more rich (and maybe more famous) than the Bob.

anon | 1/10/2007, 3:27 pm EST

hate him?
took you long enough…
his comments on dylan are
embarrassing and appropriately
revealing.

FrankBooth | 1/10/2007, 3:29 pm EST

In a world where nothing is sacred anymaore what can you expect? Is logic that they´re not trying to make a show looking for a Dylanesque musician, because if they do, people like me wolud be watching that stupid thing. And maybe then it wouldn´t be stupid, because the selection criteria… would have a CRITERIA… And yes, feeding monsters like Cowbell makes´em grow. Let´s not do that

MJM | 1/10/2007, 3:31 pm EST

Bob Dylan could have released his first two albums and disappeared and still be a thousand times more vital and important than every american idol singer/joke.

L | 1/10/2007, 3:34 pm EST

Bob Dylan is a genius and kelly clarkson sucks. I think we can all agree on that. That being said, the Dylan song on that ipod commercial IS really boring

elfshu supports Dylan | 1/10/2007, 3:35 pm EST

Little Oscar | 1/10/2007, 3:37 pm EST

The idiot isn’t worth commenting about. Amazing how Dylan didn’t need some pre-manufactured show to get him famous. That’s not to sell short another of my childhood faves, The Monkees!

Eddie Vedder's beard | 1/10/2007, 3:37 pm EST

Well, now we have proof that everyone associated with American Idol is a COMPLETE FUCKING IDIOT!!!!!!!

mk | 1/10/2007, 3:40 pm EST

now i’ve never actually watched american idol, so perhaps my opinion isn’t worth that much. but from what i know about the show, i am not the least bit surprised that simon cowell cannot appreciate the genius that is bob dylan.

jw | 1/10/2007, 3:45 pm EST

he is right, his ratings would suck. Not because Bob Dylan is not talented but because the general public is retarded. We live in a scociety where Clay Aiken sells millions of albums. All simon is guilty of is knowing his audiance.

Not everyone has to like Dylan, but know one can deny he is talented. Much more talented than Clarkson…but not more marketable.

ron | 1/10/2007, 3:47 pm EST

simon cowell has never been a legitimate source of music knowledge. he doesnt deserve one fraction of the attention he gets, but then again most celebrities dont. bob dylan is a genious and simon cowell doesnt even deserve the right to have an opinion about him.

wigga wit' no aptitiude | 1/10/2007, 3:48 pm EST

and this guys pedigree of musical expertise is what?… hey, anybody could rip on poor souls who find out on national TV that they are not as good as they think they are… Cowell adds insult to injury and we are to praise him for turning less talented musicians suicidal? or should we be grateful to him for giving us Kelly Clarkson or Clay Aiken?… really?!!! how is it at all surprising that this guy’s opinion of one of the greatest songwriters of all time is about as useful as a poopy flavored lolly-pop? let me know when he pisses on Johnny Cash’s grave though, so I can audition for A.I. and give him Cowell black eye…

WARHAND | 1/10/2007, 3:50 pm EST

Are we really discussing this. It is ridiculous.

PawPaw | 1/10/2007, 3:50 pm EST

Simon is right about Bob Dylan. The only musician worse than Dylan is Tom Waites.

jungleland | 1/10/2007, 3:52 pm EST

Of course a Dylan / American Idol colaboration would be a disaster. The kids who want to be an American Idol don’t know Dylan, would bot be able to sing the songs and the Dylan fans would turn away in droves.

Also, Dylan’s music is about writing songs, something that AI is not set up for.

Lastly, Dylan is a aquired taste and AI is about “The Masses” (or Lowest Common Denominator, style over substance, take your pick)

Do I care the Simon likes slick British music, easy listening love songs and broadway? Hell no!

Every season I say I am not going to watch this crap…and every year I watch anyway

Paddy | 1/10/2007, 3:53 pm EST

In all likelihood, Simon Cowell realizes that his comments were ludicrous. Afterall, Simon is vying for viewers in a social audience that watches dictatorial hangings, movies based on 70’s television shows and worst of all American Idol. Cowell most likely understands that he can’t provide us a new Bob Dylan, because firstly, his audience doesn’t want one and secondly the clarity of social concept provided Dylan’s work no longer exists so where would he find him were he even looking. So, of course Simon is going to bad-mouth Bob Dylan, he obviously has the ability to convince people that something unproven is quality, he might have the ability to convince people that something proven is less than quality. If the average American Idol fan was interested in Bob Dylan’s music and lyrics they would watch PBS instead of Fox and there would go the millions of weekly viewers. But, as Dylan said, “I used to care but…things have changed.”

Bob | 1/10/2007, 3:54 pm EST

Yes, I can see where ingesting too much Seacreast sperm might cloud up your limey mind and make you prefer an hour of Barry Manilow instead of “Just Like A Woman”, “Visions of Johanna” or “Tangled Up In Blue”….

Larry | 1/10/2007, 3:55 pm EST

Who cares about American Idol or Simon. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, mainstream American music is an atrocity. I don’t think this is what the Violent Femmes had in mind when they said, “I like American Music.”

Eulogy of Simon Cowell | 1/10/2007, 3:55 pm EST

Here lies a bitter, calloused soul. Don’t blame him for his temperment, blame his penis envy. Don’t blame him for his poor taste in music, blame the greedy music industry that enabled him… or better yet, don’t remember him at all because no one else will either.

Jacob | 1/10/2007, 3:58 pm EST

who does bob dylan think he is…the beatles?

max | 1/10/2007, 3:58 pm EST

dylan IS boring and buys into himself way too much, and cowell is especially correct in saying that dylan’s style would not work for american idol.

grissle | 1/10/2007, 4:00 pm EST

If it weren’t for Bob Dylan Simon wouldn’t have a job. All of music is in debt to Bob Dylan.

Bob probably wouldn’t get high ratings, but ratings do not equal relevancy.

I’d pay to see Bob give him a slug to that woman’s chest of his.

§hayla | 1/10/2007, 4:02 pm EST

All I have to say is

Boby D’s new album “modern times”
did better then taylor hicks what you call it?.

and “modern” day bob dylans
like conar of bright eyes
would make for a better show with drunken preformences and
soy bomb dancers. now thats something i would watch :)

Richard | 1/10/2007, 4:06 pm EST

Did we actually NEED this further proof that Simon Cowell is a ridiculous bufoon?

I didn’t.

This just notarizes that fact.

I’ve never watched more than 5 minutes of this stupid, embarassing show.

It’s an insult to great, talented artists everywhere, that did not have to be “manufactured” to sell records or make an artistic statement.

How fitting is it that the ‘winners’ on this show, are known more for their weight problems, illeteracy problems or sexual preferences than their actual talents? None have been able to make much of an impact as ’stars’ – and yet, a person that was actually KICKED OFF the show is on the verge of winning an Academy Award!

I’m intelligent enough to realize that Bob Dylan is not going to be a favorite for everyone (critics or music fans alike) – but the fact that he doesn’t appeal to an ingrate like Simon Cowell only makes me appreciate the greatness of Dylan even more.

LoveU2 | 1/10/2007, 4:07 pm EST

Okay… look where Dylan’s music has put him… AT THE TOP!!! He’s WAY better than any Pop singer like Kelly Clarkson…

Jeremy S. | 1/10/2007, 4:11 pm EST

I can’t believe that “we” are worried that simon doesn’t like Dylan. Who cares? The two are not alike, Idol and Dylan. 10 Dylan’s would NOT bring in 30 million viewers because 30 million viewers believe that pop music is great, something Dylan and Dylan fans want no part of. Are “we” upset that Dylan fans don’t watch simon’s show? NO! To care about this bubble gum, pop, watered down, lowest common denominator type of entertainment is ridiculous. Dylan doesn’t care, Dylan fans don’t care, simons doesn’t care, the American Idol flock don’t care…only “we” cares. Sounds like much ado about nuttin’.

Barry | 1/10/2007, 4:15 pm EST

Wow. A story about someone who doesn’t like Dylan?

Let me just say that I think Tom Waits is insanely overrated. People only like him because other people do.

I want to see this front page tomorrow. “Barry calls Waits a fake.”

J.S. Wildhack | 1/10/2007, 4:16 pm EST

I don’t give two shits about anything that Simon Cowell does or says, be it about Bob Dylan or anyone else. Truth is, like him or not, Bob Dylan is an artist, whereas Simon Cowell is just another industry fuckwad whose sole concern is to move units and collect a paycheck. The fact that anyone at RS ‘loved’ him to begin with…well, that speaks for itself.

FG | 1/10/2007, 4:18 pm EST

The only reason Cowell is even saying this is to create buzz for AIs new season. He knows that if he talks crap about Dylan it will make news. It’s all about marketing and selling of AI products (AI tv, CDs, lunchboxes, etc). Cowell could give a rat’s ass about Dylan or any other musician outside of AI.

Barneyh8er | 1/10/2007, 4:18 pm EST

Man, even blog comments about Dylan such as these are going to be above or out of reach of most American Idol viewers. Might as well be talkin’ ’bout life from different solar systems.

RedSG | 1/10/2007, 4:18 pm EST

Simon Cowell is just looking for attention. Who cares? He is right about the Dylan-inspired American Idol. I wouldn’t want to hear a bunch of tone-deafs butchering his music.

Moir | 1/10/2007, 4:18 pm EST

This is actually news. Fuck that, Simon Cowell is possibly one of the most useless public figures of our time. On a level with Miss Paris Hilton. And I am willing to bet that Paris also find’s Dylan boring. If she even know’s who the hell he is.

blarg | 1/10/2007, 4:20 pm EST

No kidding, omg, dylan has been called out in negative light.

Dylan has not made a good CD in over 20 years. His latest CD is only good in comparison to the shit he’s recorded in the last 2.5 decades.

Dylan’s RS interview consisted of him shitting on all music in the past 20 years and telling us how it’s worthless so it might aswell be pirated.

The guy by is a curmudgeon.

I went to his latest concert and it was terrible, he not only dissappointed the fans by playing new stuff (yea! his new cd is so great) but he also played all the old stuff in different keys so you couldn’t recognize it.

Dylan is boring. Watch him live.

Byron Moore | 1/10/2007, 4:20 pm EST

Bleedin,British,Boreing,Bastar d…………but…….RIGHT!

nwark | 1/10/2007, 4:22 pm EST

I like the fact that Simon Cowell has got the guts to speak his mind, especially when it is about Bob Dylan, who seem to be above criticism. He is just one of those person you can’t dislike without having a damn good explanation for it, which I think is absurd, just as bashing Cowell instead of considering his point of view is.

Note: I neither agree nor disagree with Cowell since I’m only familiar with very little of Bob Dylan’s works.

YOU killed rock music | 1/10/2007, 4:26 pm EST

I would join the debate but I’m not sure what American Idol is? Is it a new religion? Because I’m already down with the Jesus.

All I know is that Bob Dylan could probably give a fuck less about what critics think by now and is probably out on a 100 foot yacht drinking drinks and screwing about 300 girls simeultaneously while this Simon guy bitches and moans.

jay croghan | 1/10/2007, 4:27 pm EST

oh god who cares wat he said about bob dylan… jesus man this magazine needs to get over the old ppl… its 2006 time to move on

and yea simon sucks too

Deenyc | 1/10/2007, 4:29 pm EST

Simon will be famous as someone with no taste, an idiot, who somehow was able to make money from alot of fools watching AI. I sure Bob Dylan, (the greatest song writer alive or dead), cares!!
Peace out!!

Timo | 1/10/2007, 4:29 pm EST

I think Cowell is right. JW and Jungleland make good points. Dylan is and will always be relevant, but it amazes me how people can listen to his music over and over. I like some Dylan every now and then, but he does get boring. If nothing else due to sheer vocal limitations. He has to have one of the worst voices in pop/rock music ever. I doubt the same could be said for some of Dylan’s contemporaries… maybe AI should infuse some James Brown or Jimi Hendrix… that would be WAY MORE interesting than anything Dylan.

Geoff | 1/10/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Go back to Britain you fucking wank, call us when you have something important with your life, like Dylan not brought us so much, you brought us more pop shit music that won’t be worth shit in 10 years where as Dylans music will forever you limey cock wad!

nick | 1/10/2007, 4:32 pm EST

Tom Waits knows we hate our jobs

proud american | 1/10/2007, 4:33 pm EST

Well, you can’t really compare Kelly Clarkson to Bob Dylan.

I’ve always thought Dylan was a songwriter first, and a singer second. Clarkson is the exact opposite.

I suspect simple Simon is just trying to fan the embers of controversy on this one, bless his heart.

jeremyM | 1/10/2007, 4:34 pm EST

i think he is right. i mean, i love dylan, but i dont think songs like, the lonesome death of hattie carroll would exactly bring the votes in. besides dylan is way to good to have any thing to do with that whole scene. i think.

Deenyc | 1/10/2007, 4:36 pm EST

Additional comment- Dylan does not care,(correction to previous post), By the way when was the last time all of you so called fans listened to the entire Dylan collection from the ’60’s to current. Keep it coming Bob- Lets bore Simon to death.

mdb | 1/10/2007, 4:37 pm EST

simon cowell is the judge of american idol

why de we care what he has to say about dylan?

Kerry Stephenson | 1/10/2007, 4:38 pm EST

And who the Fuck is Simon Cowbell again?

Try listening to Modern Times ya poseurs.

VegasBaby | 1/10/2007, 4:40 pm EST

Simon critizing Bob Dylan is like Brittany Spears critizing Shakespeare. I don’t see how anyone could take this seriously. Dylan’s contributions speak for themselves. One of the best -ever -

sam | 1/10/2007, 4:43 pm EST

Simon Cowell sucks! Shut the t.v. off when he comes on! Not worth watching.

dylan fan | 1/10/2007, 4:47 pm EST

dylan was and still is the best around, no one comes close

Dr. Ralph | 1/10/2007, 4:48 pm EST

Well golly gee, Simon pissed in RS’s wheaties. Aren’t we offended? Give me a break… Simon Cowell has made himself famous by hurling insults at singers and he throws a spitball Dylan’s way and you hate him? Shamerican Idol is teeny-bopper heaven and if ‘ol Robert Zimmerman showed up today with his nasal offerings and harmonica intact he wouldn’t make it to Hollyweird. For this we can be thankful. Nothing like prostituting yourself out to the realityTVmusicindustry to make a quick buck and losing all your self-respect and credibility. The times they are a changin’… but not that much.

Ishmael | 1/10/2007, 4:48 pm EST

Rolling Stone once again tries to invent a story on a slow news day. I can’t even believe I’m responding to this (apparantly I have nothing better to do either). But that said, let’s see how many people from how many genres and walks of life take Kelly Clarkson covers to the top of the charts in the next thirty years.

Also, Dylan may not be a tradionally good singer, but he never intended to be. He is vocally confrontational so that you are forced to listen to the song and not be lulled into a pop-stupor by the music. He makes music to get your attention, unlike the Idol contestants, who generally make music so innocuous that you can’t remember anything about it without having it bludgeoned into your skull 50 times a day on crap radio stations.

Finally, Simon Cowell is a mean, self-satisfied bitchy diva and always has been. And you, Rolling Stone, were “in his corner” at some point? Have you lost what little intelligence or integrity you have left?

AlienDude | 1/10/2007, 4:48 pm EST

I guess he got his credentials sitting next toi that mussical genius Paula Abdull;)
Simon, fuck off!!

Graygoat | 1/10/2007, 4:49 pm EST

I’ve got 25 Dylan albums, and I’ve never watched American Idol…I’d rather watch Green Acres.

N | 1/10/2007, 4:53 pm EST

Why do you people bother with this shit. This is the reason people have begun to slag off your magazine. Who cares about Simon Cowell or American Idol? If that’s your readership I’m outa here!

john | 1/10/2007, 4:54 pm EST

American Idol sucks…but Dylan IS beyond boring…about time someone said it…can’t sing. cant play guitar, better off just being a poet….

BB | 1/10/2007, 4:55 pm EST

To me, American Idol adds more fuel to the crappy state of the music industry today.Manufacuted “artists”with mostly manufactured crap music. I wish this junk show would shrivel up and die.

john | 1/10/2007, 4:56 pm EST

and one more thing…rolling stone is the only publication that still thinks DYlan is relevant….if it werent for you guys there wouldnt be ANYBODY talking about him anymore…society has changed, and his lyrics are no longer relevant….

Bob Dylan | 1/10/2007, 4:58 pm EST

He’s right……..i am really boring…….i cant play guitar…….i cant sing…..im mean…….i proved that your voice can get even worse……..i mean have you heard my records……they friggi n suck man……geez what am i worth?

B-Rett | 1/10/2007, 4:59 pm EST

OK, I definitely gotta side with RS here. Bob Dylan’s the shit. Simon Cowell WAS the shit up until now. American Idol was NEVER the shit, but only minutely cool because Simon Cowell’s such a good asshole, putting people in thier place.
But you can’t go shit talking legends. You can’t win. Dylan will live on far after Cowell, without a doubt. Simon just screwed himself over blatantly by explaining “meaningful music is subservient to the populus & Being an idol is better than being legend” BULLSHIT.

And RS, you’re still cool, I wouldn’t here about this idiocy if not for you.
And “If Not For You” is one of my fav Dylan songs.

sb | 1/10/2007, 5:04 pm EST

i have to admit that i conpletely agree with Simon.
But Dylan has nothing to do with America Idol.
There’s no comparisons because their two different things

dyer | 1/10/2007, 5:06 pm EST

If it weren’t for Dylan, Cowell would not have a job. Dylan’s lyrics no longer relevent? Hmm, seems to me when he came along, Dylan took rock and roll back from the sweater vest wearing teeny boppers and made it dangerous. Gee, John, glad to see you are keeping American Idol alive and breathing….

ryan | 1/10/2007, 5:10 pm EST

fuck you simon cowell..i love dylan and i know his voice is different..but that makes him great. seriousely how many people can have a horrible voice, not even be a good guitarist, and kick complete ass! this is coming from someone whos making fake musicians in a gay scene. fuck you

B-Rett | 1/10/2007, 5:11 pm EST

OK, I posted earlier and just now read some more comments and no one seems to point out that Blood On The Tracks actually PROVES Dylan can sing. It may have only been a short burst of creativity in the mid-70’s, but he can fuckin sing and play better than anyone as a solo artist.
By the way, for you “Blood” fans, possibly the best song on the album isn’t even on it. “UP TO ME” is on Biograph (1985) as a deleted tune from “BOTT”. Check it out.

fighella | 1/10/2007, 5:12 pm EST

Who cares what Simon Cowell says about Bob Dylan really?

Bob Dylan isnt a singer. He’s a writer. I saw Bob Dylan in concert in 1998 and it was the worst show I have ever seen… He forgot his words… he didn’t give a shit about his audience.

Idol is about performing. Dylan is about writing. It’s like comparing Edgar Allen Poe to Danielle Steel… WASTE OF TIME.

But at least we clicked the link. Read the Article. Saw the Ads. And bought the T-Shirt.

“I sat through a Bob Dylan concert and all I got was this crappy American Idol DVD”

JonWithnal | 1/10/2007, 5:13 pm EST

Could rolling stone suck and more than it does? That might be a better topic.

Daniel L. | 1/10/2007, 5:15 pm EST

I want a 24 hour watch on Andy Greene. He should stay at least two states away from this Simon guy.

Bob Dylan's cat, S. Checkbooks | 1/10/2007, 5:18 pm EST

Dude! His ass smells worse than mine! He hasn’t changed my litter since “Blowin’ in the Wind”.. Forget about what Cowell said, can you tell this friggin guy that I ain’t workin’ and Bobby’s farm no more… I always thought he hated PUSSY..

Bruce Jennings | 1/10/2007, 5:22 pm EST

I am a lesbian.

paul doane | 1/10/2007, 5:24 pm EST

Dylan has never really had mass appeal, he’s kind of an acquired taste. But to not grasp the importance of one of the most fascinating and gifted artists America has ever produced is to admit to basic stupidity and ignorance.

seamus Donnelly | 1/10/2007, 5:30 pm EST

thats it, simon should go fuck himself

Boring | 1/10/2007, 5:31 pm EST

Hi, this is boring calling. I was wondering if I could have my Clay Aiken back.

JAMES | 1/10/2007, 5:33 pm EST

I agree that Bob Dylan should have nothing to do with American Idol. That said, Bob Dylan is one of the greates American musicians there ever was. In twenty years, when no one even knows the name Simon Cowell, Bob Dylan’s music will still be play

nico1138 | 1/10/2007, 5:33 pm EST

Well…in a way… he is right.
Amerian idol´s audiende would de really bored with Bob.

they wouldn´t get it.

Shitty music sells.
¿example?
nelly furtado´s Folkolore was great, but risky (and didn´t sell)
Now she is another plastic pop star (and very succesfull)

me not you | 1/10/2007, 5:34 pm EST

Simon is a fool. Oh well, look at what he does for a living–manufactures pop stars.

tom | 1/10/2007, 5:37 pm EST

Bob Dylan is COMPLETELY BORING. Rolling Stone, its time to move on. There is new and inventive music out there that deserves to be recognized. It sickens me that the only great reviews that Rolling Stones hands out are to aging musicians whose best work came out 25 years ago. This is 2007, there are new legends to be discovered!!! Stop wasting your pages on reviews of Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits!!!

Matty J | 1/10/2007, 5:42 pm EST

Simon doesn’t know anything and anybody who willingly judges people who sing that bull crap music and then disses Dylan, deserves anything that comes to him. American Idol music is what it is, lame, boring, untalented and useless. And Simon doesn’t even make stars or idols, he attempts to, but only one winner has done anything, Clarkson, and I have no idea why.

peter lacount | 1/10/2007, 5:42 pm EST

that blimey peice of shit better watch his lip. dylan is untouchable, trashing the man the myth the legend would be like shooting his dog. we just dont do it because its not right. he needs to appologize

Greg K | 1/10/2007, 5:45 pm EST

Simon spends his life tearing apart singers on his show…I could understand that because most of those performers are completely horrible, I never thought that he would stoop so low as to critize Bob Dylan though…alot of the performers on his show would probably cite bob dylan as an inspiration, Simon needs to think not just about the immediate music but the music from generations past that has influenced his performers and has made his show “interesting.”

Living in the past | 1/10/2007, 5:46 pm EST

Simon is a douche. plain and simple, ok, next subject. Rolling stones, you are douches also. Still lapping up Dylans cock? move on, i agree with the tom dude, there is better music out there than the shit you get paid to write about…er promote. Wake up, Rolling stone now epitomizes everythingthing mainstream and well….lame in music today. Take a survey, u’ll find out.

DFR | 1/10/2007, 5:50 pm EST

Who is Simon?
American What?

Clint | 1/10/2007, 5:55 pm EST

I agree with Simon…Bob Dylan is Soooo over-rated. His new album is dreadful!

Dante | 1/10/2007, 5:58 pm EST

Simon Cowell is absolutely right. Being a Bob Dylan fan myself, there is zero doubt that Robert Zimmerman woudn’t bring in 3 million viewers, let alone the 30+ million that American Idol brings in each week. All Simon was really saying is that Bob Dylan/his music would be boring on a glitzy show like American Idol and he’s absolutely correct in believing that. Dylan’s great to his fans, myself included, but to most of America he’s a boring old guy that can’t sing. Lighten up.

Moniker A | 1/10/2007, 6:01 pm EST

It’s been said, “no one has ever gone poor underestimating the taste of Americans.” Simon Cowell can appreciate this. But I could care less what he says, he’s an inconsequential twirp.

chris | 1/10/2007, 6:01 pm EST

He’s right. I love Bob Dylan, but Dylan could not reach American Idol’s market audience.

JR | 1/10/2007, 6:03 pm EST

He bashed Dylan?!

Oh no you di’nt!

Oh no you di’nt!

Alejandro | 1/10/2007, 6:06 pm EST

Of course Simon wouldnt reach 300 million viewers. People today dont know quality from crap. First off, they wouldnt even be tuhed by the lyrics, they just want the bling and the gossip…

no wonder America’s lost

gilithonel | 1/10/2007, 6:07 pm EST

Hey Blarg, you are a true idiot. Dylan’s new album kicks ass – it blew the roof off the charts. Has anything any loser on American Idol has done even come close to the minions who worship Dylan. Get a life!

john | 1/10/2007, 6:08 pm EST

HEy Dyer..i was not defending American Idol…I hate American Idol..i was just pointing out that Dylan is boring..just because American Idol blows doesnt mean Dylan sucks any less cock…They are both dreadful…

gilithonel | 1/10/2007, 6:21 pm EST

American Idiot – someone ought to take that light-in-the-loafers Brit and teach him a lesson.

professor rohlfie | 1/10/2007, 6:22 pm EST

gilithonel | 1/10/2007, 6:30 pm EST

Simon should be honored to have Dylan blow a wad in his face.

OK | 1/10/2007, 6:47 pm EST

Scr*w You Cowell. You don’t know sh*t bout music. I have watched him do his three different reality shows in the UK, then watched the US counterparts. Close analysis will show that almost everything this guy says is probably scripted –there are writers for these shows, this is not reality TV! Whatever opinion this guys expresses merely is made to make entertaining television. So we shouldn’t really be offended about the Dylan comment anyway, because Cowell IS the lowest common denominator–a money hungry fool (and shame on the system for rewarding this retard with 35 million dollars for a job that requires no effort! Does this dude give anything to charity?). Anyway, We do not care about his opinion at the end of the day. If the music is crap, its crap. Cowell was just lucky enough to find a way to make money out of this whole ridiculous genre – the talent show. Idol and all of its global spinoffs are nothing more than a starmaking platform for talent. These is no REAL spontaneity to any of it. Even though this rant would indicate otherwise –lets not warrant Cowell’s meaningless opinions with our attention. Cheers!

RLG | 1/10/2007, 6:49 pm EST

Bob has brought some of the greatest fuckin music of all time, what has simion brought some crappy fucking pop singers and a over rated country artist simion go fuck your self your show is Probably the worst thing that happen in music, before u start talking shit why want u give use something first other then some over rated tv show and the crappy artist that win

Mr.Kite | 1/10/2007, 6:49 pm EST

Dylan’s OK but he’s no Il Divo (insert eye roll here)

w0nderwall | 1/10/2007, 6:52 pm EST

Also, what’s up with Rolling Stone giving this filth and his group of talentless vermin group of retards doing on the cover this past year? I hope Rolling Stone takes a good look at this crap-pile of shit and realize putting them on the cover was a mistake of epic proportions. Now that he has made one of the ultimate fuck-up mistakes like talking down a living legend like Bob Dylan, this piece of crap-turd that won’t flush should be spat on. Who are the 30 million retards watching his show? Who? These numbers have to be wrong! They must! America is a lot smarter and better and above this joke of a TV show called American Idol! Absolute garbage! Who’s next on Simon’s shit-list? The Beatles? The Rolling Stones? Oasis?

Bangers-n-mash | 1/10/2007, 6:56 pm EST

Last time I checked I was on the Rolling Stone webpage.
Why should we even care if some Brit who is interested in product and not artistry wants to ‘insult’ an American artist that helped to mold the culture of several decades past? Point being: Rolling Stone please start covering stuff we should be caring about again.

George | 1/10/2007, 7:00 pm EST

First of, that Tom guy is a jackass, straight up (if you find it neccessary trash Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Tom Waits all in one sentence, then no one cares what you have to say, what you listen to, or who the hell you think you are).
Second, Simon is a jackass, and who the hell is he to say a damn thing about Bob Dylan. Ever heard of Simon singing, playing an instrument, or writing a song? If not, he obviously doesn’t have the talent or the balls to, and even if you have heard of him doing any of this, it probably blows.

Thirdly, there’s no way in hell even Simon has more money than Bob Dylan (he gets paid for every cover and, honestly, who hasnt covered a Dylan song?). Also, the man’s been on the road since 1988, making thousands and thousands of dollars a week. Bob Dylan’s got more money than Simon because Bob Dylan works for his money, as opposed to sitting around with his finger up a bunch of puppets assholes.

Fourthly, anyone who thinks that Bob Dylan is irrelevant or that Rolling Stone is the only magazine that still talks about him obviously reads mainly People and, well, other shit like that.

Fifthly (is that a word?), Bob Dylan live isn’t for everyone, and if you don’t get the show you’re probably just not ready for it (or a jackass as well).I mean, you don’t have to like Bob Dylan (though you probably should) but for Christ’s sake if you’re gonna bash him at least make some attempt to understand what he’s trying to accomplish, and if you don’t come to the completely logical conclusion that the man is doing things no one else in pop music has even touched on, you’re a jackass (the 80s albums don’t count).

I think that’s about it, Listen to Bob Dylan.

Trance | 1/10/2007, 7:16 pm EST

well. what do you expect the taste maker of 12 year old girls to say? bob dylan only suits people with fine taste in music.

MegaSudz | 1/10/2007, 7:17 pm EST

It is just TV show, Dylan is an ICON. Once they crown the winner, its over. The only thing you hear about any of them is that Clay Akin is a power bottom who fists strangers in a hotel room.

jubu | 1/10/2007, 7:29 pm EST

So what if his comments are ridiculous??? Music is subjective. And although I think his musical taste is garbage, he is 100% right in saying that nobody would watch his stupid little show if they filled it up with Dylans. America does not want to hear that kind of music. There’s really nothing offensive to what he said, so lighten up and stop being so high and mighty. Besides, haven’t you guys had the Backstreet Boys on your cover, and how many times have you put Justin Timberlake on the cover of your crappy magazine???

brain | 1/10/2007, 7:29 pm EST

Ok. Im normally just an observer on this page. I like to check in from time to time just to see whats being said. I feel for the most part that, arguing to defend my favorite band or singer ect… is just really pointless. Music is after all a personal experience and we all get different perceptions of different artist and were all entitled to love or hate someones music for different reasons. But when I read this comment about Bob Dylan… Simon sells a souless image and voice in order to make money off of them. Yes many of those people can sing and perform those manufactured songs very well, and thats great, i suppose there is a place for that. But I think he’s pumping to much of it into the culture so he can get rich. Sure maybe the public love these “idols” and buy into it like a bunch of damn sheep. But people who truly enjoy art and the concept of saying something know its a load of crap.

Its quite ridiculous really. No, Bob wouldnt win an American Idol competion. Neither would Johnny Cash in his prime… its doubtful Mick Jagger would. Willie Nelson…No. Neil Young…Not a chance in hell. Iggy Pop…probably not. Anthony Kiedes, Eddie Vedder… might make it a round or two, but they wouldnt win.

Whether you like these artist or not is not the point. These are all people that dont have the greatest set of pipes (as far as the vocally trained ear would be concerned) but have contributed to the fabric of popular music in recent years using there own talent and unique delivery to enrich the world of music. I only hope we dont wake to a world of manufactured “idols” one day.

Taste is the enemy of art.

Screw you Simon Cowbell.

Diego | 1/10/2007, 8:36 pm EST

Simon is a nobody in music history, Bob changed the course of music, and is one of the most important singers of the 20th century, the difference between Dyaln and Simon, is that Bob does it because he loves music, he doesn´t care if people talk about him or if someone (such as Cowell or any critic) approves it, and Cowell does it for the money, i don´t think Dylan will put any atention to this matter.

Ramblin' man | 1/10/2007, 8:46 pm EST

I doubt Dylan cares. In fact, Dylan’s never cared. I didn’t see him cryin’ at Newport, or for that matter, looking for validation. That’s what makes Dylan special; he does what he needs to do, not what some one else wants him to do.

Simon Cowell is interested in having a hokey, yes devastatingly popular, but nonetheless, hokey hit show.

Good for both Dylan and Cowell. I doubt people will remember Simon down the line. Everyone will remember Dylan, not just because of his music, but because of Woody Guthrie and Jack Elliott and the times he helped to revolutionize. Simon has a juke box show and that’s cool. Everyone loves karioke!

hahaha as I wear my Dylan long sleeved T ( you know the one with the horses riding off in the background and the No. 1 printed on top) i can’t help but laugh and wonder how this guy from American freakin’ idol ever got in the same class to think he can say he’s bored to tears by Dylan.
Maybe i ahve never watched American Idol, but you would have 30 million viewers a night no matter what as long as you attract fake, teens, and old singer wanna be’s and promise them that their vote counts for a new winner. haha what a joke. Long live Bob Dylan!!

PS | 1/10/2007, 10:19 pm EST

And the best part is that Bob Dylab doesn’t give a rat’s ass about what Simon Cowell thinks about him. Dylan has plenty of people who attend his concerts every year. He has a loyal following. Cowell is just a pansy who wears the same gray muscle shirt every day.

Look I like Dylan too and I know Rolling Stone is trying to hold onto their scraps of “classic rock” cred by constantly telling us how great Dylan and the Stones are (as if we needed reminding from silly yuppie magazine writers), but Simon Cowell is pop critic; of course he doesn’t like Dylan. And also, he’s right: an American Idol season with Bob Dylan would be bizarre and unsuitable and probably not very good from the perspective of most Idol watchers. So stop staging these silly hyperactive defenses of rock stars; we know your whole game.
Thank you

Personally I think both sides are just as bad as each other. Bob Dylan may be an influential figure in music, but that doesn’t mean everybody has to like him (I’m not as extreme about it as Mr. Cowell but I’m not a bob dylan fan either). At the same time, nothing good has come out of American Idol. So I think everybody should just shut up.

Mark | 1/11/2007, 12:00 am EST

I met Dylan in 1975 at The Troubadour in L.A., up in the office after he came off stage. I had ten of his albums at the time. I shook hands with him, and he was so full of smack that his hand was chilly cold to the wrist, in a very hot room. He was wearing that heavy Neru jacket too. His face was ash gray. He was wearing shades so thick, I think they were ski glasses. He’d just gotten off stage with his “Rolling Thunder Review” gang. They were all so messed up, they couldn’t get through one number in the twenty minutes or so they tried.

I really regretted that he’d crashed Roger Miller’s set. So was Roger, Chris Kristopherson, and wife (at the time) Rita Coolidge (sp?) Most of the audience left.

He’s a living legend, but not always living it. I hope he’s not still smacking, now these thirty years later.

Grafton | 1/11/2007, 12:04 am EST

Who are YOU catering to Rolling Stone? You know the problem is not what Simon Cowell says – it’s that you give him space in your magazine and web site. “We used to respect Simon as a savvy social scientist—someone who gets the most out of the lowest common denominator within our culture. But we though he actually KNEW what good music was…”

Are you serious? Does Rolling Stone really believe that or is it just something you’re doing to try to fit in with the popular kids in class? Give me a fucking break. Maybe your website should stop being a blog of useless trendy shit and should get back to some substance.

Who gives a fuck what this clown says?

auramac | 1/11/2007, 12:14 am EST

Apparently the only talent Simon has is critiquing- to compare Kelly Clarkson or anyone in his flaccid-fake operatic Monkee group to Dylan is just plain bizarre. Dylan may not be his idea of show biz, or even music, but sometimes it really is good to keep your mouth shut. So long, credibility. The losers on Idol now have more than he does.

Roger | 1/11/2007, 12:33 am EST

Bob Dylan is horrible and boring as hell, Simon is once again right and a pure genius.

Maureen | 1/11/2007, 12:38 am EST

Whatever would make you think that Simon appreciated good music?? You thought Simon was a savy, social scientist? Pulease!!

Dylan is one of our most gifted, unique artists and he should be totally revered for all of his contributions. Simon disses Dylan and shows his ignorance yet again!

The only real talent that ever came off Idol is Clay Aiken and Simon was too stupid to see Clay’s talent also.

So you see, Simon is clueless and yes you were wrong and now you can hate him.

Robert | 1/11/2007, 12:40 am EST

Someone needs to impletment the Clay Aiken “hand over mouth” move on Simon Cowell.

Jason | 1/11/2007, 12:54 am EST

Simon Cowell & Bob Dylan should never be mentioned in the same sentence. Simon Cowell is an egomaniac with horrible taste in music and has done more to hurt popular music than just about anybody. Bob Dylan is an innovator, a legend, and true musician. Rolling Stone should get its head out of its ass and stop even mentioning “American Idol” on its website and in its pages.

Gofrito | 1/11/2007, 12:56 am EST

Bob Dylan is the man, but Cowell is right. A season of talentless singers covering Dylan tunes would suck. they’d be trying to add crazy vocal runs and high notes to ballad of a thin man, and i’d cry.

You're Killing Me Smalls! | 1/11/2007, 12:58 am EST

Dylan is the greatest lyrical poet of all time. Easily. However, I’ve seen Dylan twice and both shows were mediocre at best. Dylans words can change the world but his voice can make many turn away. I always found Dylan to be an atrocious singer and bands such as Pearl Jam, The Secret Machines, Dave Matthews Band, The Byrds, Jimi Hendrix etc, always did much better versions of the songs because of the musicianship and vocals. However when Bobby had The Band with him he was on top of his game musically, however, his voice still poured out a lack of talent. Dylans remarkable with words. I just wish sometimes you could understand them when he voices them.

Dave | 1/11/2007, 1:04 am EST

Dylan = art and real music.
Simon and American Idol = Commerce and bland mass market entertainment.
Both are good at what they do and I wouldn’t expect either to be familiar with the opposite realm.

Hoyle | 1/11/2007, 1:06 am EST

At the end of the day, Simon is a washed up reality show host and Bob Dylan is, well…Bob Dylan. Only the greatest songwriter of all time. Simon Cowell needs to stick to bubble-gummy, no talent, sell-out pop music.

Annie | 1/11/2007, 1:10 am EST

Simon cowell should be burned at the stake for what he said. Is he really serious! The only thing that he has done is to take American music down one more notch which isn’t even an accomplishment. Did he ever stop to think that maybe it is a bad thing that a season inspired by Dylan wouldn’t hold an audience! Although I’m sure all of the people who buy Kelly clarkson records are budding intellectuals! Thanks a lot Simon for once and for all confirming what an egomaniacal tone deaf idiot you are. The fact that you have created Kelly, Rubin, Clay etc. and are proud of the music that they produce really speaks volumes.

Jack | 1/11/2007, 1:22 am EST

He is looking out for his show when he says that. 10 “Dylanesque” finalists would bore most of America to tears. You have to remember, “Who really is watching American Idol?” But the fact that he says he doesn’t own one Dylan record, I guess he wouldn’t know good music if it came up and took a dump on his head. If I saw one contestant actually play guitar while they performed, I would immediately give them the kudos the deserve by giving more than 2 shits and treating it like a glorified karaoke contest. All it would take is one contestant to do that, and they would have soooo many people in their corner a la Dylan lovers.

Crafton | 1/11/2007, 1:31 am EST

Wow..you actually removed my posting?? Is it because it had curse words or because you were embarrased? I can’t believe it. Well, in case it was the profanity – I’ll post again..

The problem with Rolling Stone is that you’re giving Simon Cowell space in your magazine and web site? “We used to respect Simon as a savvy social scientist—someone who gets the most out of the lowest common denominator within our culture. But we though he actually KNEW what good music was…even if it wasn’t what he was selling.”

REALLY? Rolling Stone really thought this? Give me a break!! Did you really think Simon Cowell has any cred at all? Who gives a S$%t what Simon Cowell says? Stop giving people like him space on this web site and start getting some substance here. Enough useless trendy blog cr*p. The fact that you’re even posing such a question is the problem here.

vizwork | 1/11/2007, 1:54 am EST

40 years ago, Bob Dylan was changing the world with his music. 40 years from now his music and lagacy will live on as vibrantly as it does today. Simon is a blip on the cultural meter. DYlan need not be worried.

Laurens from Indonesia | 1/11/2007, 1:58 am EST

Admit it: Simon has a point. I wonder what he has to say about Axl Rose and Chinese Democracy if and when it comes out.

F American Idol | 1/11/2007, 2:23 am EST

Actually, dipsh*t has a point. If Dylan or 10 people as talented as him were on that crap show then no one would watch. Most people would not comprehend the type of message that is being conveyed to them and obviously Mr. Cowell has joined the millions of morons who subscribe to this type of junk music. He might as well, he is making money off of it. As for the rest of them, they have no such excuse. Ignorance doesn’t count in my book.

daniel | 1/11/2007, 2:48 am EST

simon’s got a great point. dylan is a good musician, but he’s not the end all, be all of music. it takes a specific mood to listen to him, and although his lyrics are great, his singing voice is subpar compared to the great vocalists from any generation. and having to watch 10 dylans a week would absolutely “bore me to tears.”

mr. kenny | 1/11/2007, 2:52 am EST

Dylan sings vocal gymnastics, lesser singers would shy away from.he said once that he’d like to sound like Gordon Lightfoot but he just doesn’t.listen closely to the way Dylan phrases a line and puts it right into the feel of the song.the first two cuts of “Modern Times” are prime examples of why i listen to Dylan and pass on the smooth predictability of mainstream pop songs

mike daigle | 1/11/2007, 3:38 am EST

I don’t like Bob Dylan, and I especially don’t like the cult that surrounds him.

It’s not sacriledge to say he sucks. He sings like he’s got a mouth full of marbles. As for songwriting, I prefer witty songwriters to self-righteous ones.

Platypus66 | 1/11/2007, 5:30 am EST

Simon’s basically right. Lyrics are Dylan’s thing, have always been, and musically he’s never been very interesting. (How many Dylan covers, beside Hendrix’s version of All Along the Watchtower, do you recall?) And since he’s the best interpreter of his own poems/lyrics, why bother? Mind you, also Leonard Cohen and Neil Young, both brilliant writers, have always been set their wonderful words to campfire-level guitar strumming. Why they’re not satisfied with just being excellent writers has always baffled me – why confuse the sharpness of words with mediocre music? Oh well…

I think its funny that so many people are taking this shit personally. Who cares what he has to say? Opinions are like assholes, everyones got one and most of them stink…. I doubt Bob is worried, its like telling Da Vinci or someone that his paintings suck and that a monkey in a cage can paint better with its fingers.. so what? Bob just keeps moving on…

Frutt | 1/11/2007, 7:27 am EST

I know what Cowell means when he says that 10 Dylans would not have attracted 30m viewers. Of course not. The majority of the viewers are thick as pigshit. And Cowell’s business is to make blandness sparkle. He’s a publisist, not an expert on music, and so we can pretty much ignore anything he has to say about it.
Dylan, in his prime, was a great writer and performer, although I think Wayne Coyne hit the nail right on the head when he compared Dylan’s current live work to a pizza delivery boy who brings you dog food and says that’s HIS version of a pizza.
But, having said that, I am a HUGE fan of large chunks of Dylan’s work. He certainly deserves all the credit he’s given. And to Platypus66 , who claims that he never wrote any good music to his lyrics(!) and can’t name any Dylan covers. Where the fuck have you been hiding your ears? Mr Tambourine Man (Byrds), It Ain’t Me Babe (Cash), Knocking on Heaven’s Door (GnR), Like a Rolling Stone (Stones), Quinn the Eskimo (Manfred Mann) just to mention a handful of the more famous ones. They’re not all great, but you can not claim that there are no memorable Dylan covers out there and expect to be taken seriously.

dwayne smith | 1/11/2007, 7:55 am EST

who are these folks going on about how subpar dylans melodies are and how his voice is not listenable to?

His lyrics are by far better than any other songwriter as a whole- that’s granted. But his songs wouldn’t mean absolutly anything if there wasn’t great tunes that they were set to. folks hear the music first regardless of the lyrics and if they like the music- will further investigate. his sense of rythm is fantastic. he has absorbed the whole wide spectrum of american root music, invested time in it and creatively stretched and added to it.
as for his voice- it may be now getting to the point where it is not something you want to hear all the time- but in his prime- I’ll say he had an excellent voice- striking, approachable, filled with wonder, enthusiasm, wisdom, wildness and america.

….because American Idol is not about real artists and musicians…it’s about creating a marketable celebrity. The Bob Dylans of the world aren’t seeking that…and that show isn’t looking for artists of that importance.

For those of you who are interested in Dylan, you may like to download for free a folk song that I just wrote and recorded a week ago called Looking For Bob Dylan

Apples and oranges. Both fruits but obviously not the same. Dylan an artist. Kelly Clarkson a puppet. Idol is discrimitive on age and appearance. That is depressing to me. I respect the artist who pays their dues!

R&RGirl | 1/11/2007, 9:12 am EST

Dylan would not work on AI because he is a songwriter. That is the extent of my appreciation for him. I’m sorry, but he cannot sing. That being said, Simon is always right about what mainstream America wants to hear, which is not necessarily, unfortunately the Bob Dylans of the world. Personally, I love Simon and think that his opinion is valuable, when it’s on a subject he is an expert in. Like say, what mainstream America wants.

CARMEN you suck! | 1/11/2007, 9:27 am EST

Awful song!

Whalespoon | 1/11/2007, 9:32 am EST

Simon said this because Dylan and his art are simply beyond his comprehension and frame of reference. Tis a pity. “Don’t criticize what you can’t understand,” Simon.

T Kapp | 1/11/2007, 9:45 am EST

I’d like to see Cowell find ten Bob Dylans. In fact, I’d like to see him find two.
Simon Cowells are a dime a dozen. Bob Dylan will always be a legend. We’ve all made peace with pop culture, but it shouldn’t consider it’s opinions to be of any value.

Jason Croke | 1/11/2007, 9:50 am EST

He’s got a point….. The draw to see barely legal girls hold vocal notes for a minuite at a time is where the cash is. Dylan has nothing on Kelly Clarkson’s ASS!

jimmy | 1/11/2007, 9:50 am EST

simon c. doesnt know what good music is. sure he knows what mainstream america wants, and that oddly enough, is not good music. he probably doesnt own a neil young record and doesnt even know who nick drake is. in fact im glad he hates dylan. it means i can take pride in my record collection and so can the rest of us. if simon cowell dies in a car crash and the investigators find his ipod they will scroll through and see kelly clarkson right above ill divo on MOST PLAYED TRACKS. then they will rule his death a “suicide by bad music.”

Penny | 1/11/2007, 10:03 am EST

why are people so worked up about this?
Simon is only known because he is, for the most part, brutally honest. He tells awful singers that they are awful, oh my Jesus the talent it takes to do that! Fuck off Cowell. Quit while your ahead no one is going to know about you in 10 years anyway.

Bob on the other hand is talented, Incredible songwritter & musician. All the respect goes to him. Unfortunately, I have none left for RS after this post.

I personally dont think its fair to Miss. Clarkson that she is being compared to Dylan, only makes us realize how fuckin terrible she really is.

BG | 1/11/2007, 10:04 am EST

It’s misinformed, narrowminded opinions like Cowell’s that further the decay of mainstream music and the industry…..Oh, and didn’t Bob Dylan’s last album go to #1? Not bad for a boring old singing poet. I wonder if any american idol will be on top of their game 40 years for now?……I think not.

Good ole’ rocknroll: http://www.myspace.com/barisalguns

Dustin | 1/11/2007, 10:11 am EST

well i’m probably the only one on Simon’s side. What American Idol is selling is Pop music in the vein of Brittney Spears and Possibly nickelback type music. Bob Dylan’s music is not right for that show. Regardless of what he personally thinks about Dylan’s music, he’s right that it would not work for American Idol.

lasgames | 1/11/2007, 10:14 am EST

Simon sits next to Paula Abdul??Duh?
WTF?? Why is this news?? He’s a idiot!

justin | 1/11/2007, 10:18 am EST

not many covers of bob dylan’s songs? is that a joke? he is covered all the time.

Del Mcronde | 1/11/2007, 10:25 am EST

Dylan’s type of music isn’t right for American Idol. However Bob Dylan is a Legend!!…And shouldn’t be bad talked in any way possible!! The world of music benefits alot more from Bob Dylan than it does ridiculous Simon Bonerwell and American Idol!

I put about as much stock in this idiot’s opinion as I do in the current administration’s ability to charm Islam into submission. Of course his opinion sucks, that’s why he’s doing that stupid tv show instead of producing music. Kelly Clarkson? What? Any speck of credibility he ever had flew out the window with that assinine comment. I hope Dylan kicks his ass.

josh | 1/11/2007, 10:51 am EST

i always thought it would make a great snl sketch to have dylan audition for idol

Sherry | 1/11/2007, 10:52 am EST

I watch American Idol, but it has NOTHING to do with MUSIC!! Dylan is a genius – in a completely different class. Why even bring it up, Simon??

dont worship false idols | 1/11/2007, 11:12 am EST

commerce versus creativity – surely that’s all it comes down to? cowell wants to shift product & has no interest in its longevity as long as it pays him handsomely. dylan, on the other hand, would not seem to care less whether his next release makes him a million dollars or not. all this does is give cowell attention & that’s the last thing anyone should be giving him – if we all ignore him will he go away?

Rolling Stone before but this one drew me out. I say we all petition that Rolling Stone find this guy’s home phone number and address so the thousands of us can give the guy a little shout out. I hope one of his TV execs is a huge Dylan fan. Oh, and that WOULD be an awsome skit on SNL to see Dylan audition with Blowing in the Wind for Idol, and then have them totally diss him and say his singing really blows. That would have me laughing for hours.

Tomcat | 1/11/2007, 11:25 am EST

likroper.com | 1/11/2007, 11:26 am EST

everybody knows that bob dylan was never about pipes and that goes without saying, he was all about the power of creative language and electrifying folk music…folkies HATED bob dylan for electrifying their music, but that was probably the most groundbreaking thing that ever happened to it…

and you know; in the end it doesn’t really matter what WE all think, it only matters what the artist thinks of him or herself, and bob dylan clearly feels that he owns the sixties…and he does in a sense if you think about the impact his words had upon the biggest band in the world, the beatles…

Foolmeister | 1/11/2007, 11:27 am EST

What do Jesus Christ, Albert Einstein and Bob Dylan have in common?…

Andrew | 1/11/2007, 11:34 am EST

American idol is a horrible show in the first place. to have dylan on the show is only degrading dylan himself. A show that brought us clay aiken and kelly clarkson shouldn’t even have the chance to have bob dylan in their presence. They don’t pick the winners because they are good musicians they pick them because of their voice. Anyone with a great voice could win the show. that doesn’t make them a great musician. Simon sucks

Frank Key | 1/11/2007, 12:21 pm EST

American Idol is all about pretending Dylan never existed – it’s an attempt to put pop music back under the control of management, with artists being told what they can sing and play. Dylan destroyed Tin Pan Alley and took pop lyrics light years beyond “I love you, I miss you, you broke my heart” swill. His simple chord structures are based on old time country and trad ballads and provided a viable, roots-left-dangling alternative to the tired old sentiments expressed by the Perry Comos and American Idols of this and that time. The show is called “American Idol”, not “American songwriter” or “American music pioneer”, after all. Dylan is a Musician and a singer (and you should ask his fellow musicians (and I don’t mean Wayne Coyne and his silly vaseline) if they think he can sing). You wanna hear some fame-lusting idiot hitting all the right notes just like the teacher showed them, enjoy the show. You want to experience the most important and groundbreaking musical artist of the last half-century, it’s Bob.

Raph | 1/11/2007, 12:32 pm EST

And where in this galaxy are you going to find 10 Dylans ???? The whole music industryhas been looking for a secod one for 40 years and so far all we have are Bruce, Jakob and a couple of other pale wannabe imitations.

Bob only knows.

I posted a comment 3 hours ago and Rolling Stone deleted it. So I sent it to Fox News.
We have tolerated his one sided opinions on American Music in the past but this is uncalled for. Unfortunately with his celebrity status he can voice his opinion to the morons that buy Idol records. It is his job to sell poop to middle class mamas that still spin REO Speedwagon and Styx. People like Simon Cowell and any other idiot that clap their hands with the kick drum instead of the snare deserve Clay Aiken. If they see Genius in Ruben Studdard and not Blood on The Tracks than we all know that they just didn’t have a wide array of music in their lives growing up. I understand that the show is American Idol and not American Icon! But Cowell’s way too influential of a person to be so limited with his addiction to bubblegum music. Dylan is an Icon…and Cowell sells Fecal matter music. Dylan hand delivers prime rib and Cowell sells fart stained fast food.

Bob Dylan is the truth the man has over 30 albums and at the age of 65 made one of the best albums of 2006 oh ya and has been touring the world not just the US. sence the early 80s and shows no sign of stoping. And the really great thing is he doesn’t give a fuck if you buy his albums or not he feels his true fans are the ones who go to see him play live thats where he reaches you Simon need ratings not truth Simon is blip in the histry of pop music some day people will not even rember him but on reruns maybe Bob has corces just on his song wrighting in schools all over the world BOB DYLAN is proof that god loves us

All comments aside, isn’t this is simple evidence that the current artistic music situation in our country and the world is completely cheap and plastic. Let Simeon life in his gumball world. He does not know between what is real and what is true.

John | 1/11/2007, 1:29 pm EST

Simon is about publicity. he will say the outrageous if it gets his name in print. He will die one day and not even be a footnote in history. As george harrison said about Dylan, “his name will be talked about 500 years from now”.

Martin | 1/11/2007, 1:38 pm EST

A small, well-placed nuclear device would make Idol (and it’s numerous international clones) A Better Show.

Simon’s comment smells of desperation: Idol is in it’s Death Throes and he’s flogging the corpse. He’d bad-mouth Miss Piggie if the publicity kept Idol (and his lucrative contract) going for just one more season.

barefootservant | 1/11/2007, 1:45 pm EST

dylan rocks, simon sucks ass. He woudn’t know good music if it hit him in the face. somebody should. maybe he should ask randy jackson about bob dylan. at least randy knows what good music is. Dylan’s music is still big in 2006 lets see if we know who rueben studdard is in 2050 think not simon you ass

pdy60 | 1/11/2007, 2:23 pm EST

Reading your article – and your editorial comments on Simon – just shows me that once again, music journalism seems to be the playground of the I-like-THIS-artist-therefore-I -am-brilliant crowd. My friends gaze at my 3000-CD collection and joke, “So much music; so little taste!” Musical taste is no different than a preference for blondes, for rare steaks, or for chocolate ice cream. It’s completely individual, and says nothing about a person’s intelligence or character. I was born in 1960, and I personally think that Dylan is unlistenable – I can think of perhaps 3 of his tunes that I can tolerate, and I raise my brows at those who think he should be deified. But I don’t call them idiots. On the other hand, I think 95% of what is on current radio is a big steaming pile of shit as well, yet apparently it has a large appreciative audience. American Idol has shown that it can draw fans – whether to the train-wreck auditions or to AI’s particular type of finale singing. I agree with Simon – a Dylan-guested AI would be a complete oxymoron. I don’t think Dylan fans are fools; I just don’t share their taste. I don’t think AI fans are fools; I share SOME of their tastes, but not all. We’re all free to like what we find pleasing to the ear, and it would benefit us all if RS and other music mags would review music and artists on their talents and the quality of their current project, rather than inferring that being a fan of a particular “legend” can confer some magical cachet. To claim that Simon or I – or anyone else who doesn’t share your particular view on Dylan – am a fool is simply ridiculous. Forgive me for not “appreciating his genius.”

Will | 1/11/2007, 3:29 pm EST

What makes Dylan so great is how he is still creating and surprising. I wish the same was true for Rolling Stone. You’ve been kissing Dylan’s ass for 40 years. This “article” is as superficial and predictable than American Idol itself. Simon tries to stir things up and attract attention for the start of his show and Rolling Stone plays along. I wouldn’t expect anything else from AI but it’d be nice if RS’s views were a bit more authentic.

Bob Dylan has inspired many musicians and his songs have been covered by everyone.

He is a legend.

Having said that. I hate his music, I think the artists he’s inspired have gone on to do better things than he. I think every cover of his song is better than his version

I also think he’s a jerk after reading his RS interview. Which is fine, this guy is so praised in N.America that he probably sees himself as the messiah.

Any how, he thinks everything in the last 20 years is worthless. I’m not even going to bother explain how big of a joke that is.

Is this really even a question? I thought it was assumed that everyone knew that Bob Dylan has no musical talent or ability. I don’t believe there is a single person that could even understand his lyrics in “We are the world”. Kelly Clarkson is FAR superior in every way!! I have to give Bob Dylan credit because apparently he put himself in the right place in the right time and found a way to promote himself with absolutely no musical talent…. I would have loved to hear the comments from the judges these days if he tried out on American Idol…….

BOB B | 1/11/2007, 10:34 pm EST

There are artists, and then there are entertainers!! Dylan is an artists!! The plastic artifical crap you see on American idile is well, what some would call entertainment (not me)!! So if that ass clown simon wants to comment on the mindless dribble on his show that one thing!! Leave the darogatory statments about true artists to some who knows what the fuck they are talking about!! Thank God the rumor wasn’t true that Dylan was going to be on that SHIT PROGRAM!! Simon is the reason that todays music blows!! It lacks anykind of organic soul!! So go fuck yourself!

DylanPureAndUnreachableGenius | 1/11/2007, 10:53 pm EST

Simon Cowell criticizing Bob Dylan is like Barry Manillow criticizing Pink Floyd…or Paris Hilton criticizing Rembrandt’s paintings…or Britney Spears criticizing Shakespeare…
Dylan’s legacy to universal culure will live an impact as long as the world lives; whereas as soon as American Idol is over and Simon’s muscle black t-shirt is auctioned for 300 bucks, his name will be immediately forgotten. He will be burried beneath the dust of his nothingness.

Darkeyez | 1/11/2007, 11:46 pm EST

Even if I wasn’t a huge Dylan fan, being over 30 years old there comes certain things I must accept…one being that there will be no social security by the time I retire….and two, you ask anyone who has any talent who their influences were and Bob’s name will come up OR someone they name will have been directly influenced by Dylan. Every time that man shows up somewhere he gets a standing ovation, no matter WHO is in the audience, no matter HOW terrible the song he just sang sounded. People just KNOW…Bob Dylan. Highest cultural award in France to be bestowed upon a foreigner…Nobel Prize nominations, Lifetime achievment awards out the wazoo, Honorary Doctorates at several Universities, Grammy Awards (His first being for BEST MALE VOCAL). He’s been openly admired by everyone from Presidents, The Beatles, the Queen of England, Scholars, Poets & writers. They all must know something Simon doesnt…that Bob Dylan is the man, whether you like his voice or not. But let’s face it, if David Hassel-dork can be a “Judge” on a prime-time talent show then Simon is no doubt not worth the chair his stupid ass is sitting on.

Darkeyez | 1/12/2007, 12:08 am EST

Do i even have to humor this asshole and tell him to read the title of the magazine? Idiot.

Music These Days... | 1/12/2007, 3:00 am EST

Who is Simon Cowell anyways? Some talentless ass who just sits around sipping his Coke while criticizing anyone he possibly can. Wow, what a job boy!

Whenever people say that they dislike Dylan, they always bring up the same exact thing,i’ve heard this statement 1001 times:
“If Dylan tried out for American Idol today, he wouldn’t even make it past the first round, They’d laugh in his face.”
Well maybe it’s true, but that’s pretty much what’s wrong with popular music today. It’s about the image and same voice over and over again. Forget substance, forget uniqueness, and forgot anything that matter. Wow, That’s sad and fucked up man!

Whatever- I know i won’t be watching American idol next season-oh wait, i don’t anyways. It’s get a little old by the second season, same old thing, same old jokes:
“Do you have a singing coach? Well, sue her.”
There’s only so many of those you can take!
So 10 Dylan’s might be boring, but not his repetitive gags and his c-cup boobs, Ryan Seacrest, Mariah Carey cover songs, and contestants getting kicked off because of some stupid past mistake?

ok….

Simon doesn’t have to like Dylan-but if he doesn’t have the sense in respecting a legend and realizing what he’s dealing with when doing so: then he better expect to get blasted!

Here really isn’t aware of Bob Dylan one bit- he doesn’t understand that Dylan fans are the shit and when it comes to him- you do NOT mess with the MAN!

BTW, WTF is with II Divo? He would consider that “good” and “music”?

Music These Days... | 1/12/2007, 3:06 am EST

BTW RS: Keep on kissing his ass and worshipping him like the rest of us with good taste!

Even though you’re more commercial and realize that a lot of people who buy your mag probably only hear of him in your issues, you still have the balls to do the right thing! Rock on!

Simon Cowell is such an arsehole, making such comments. I wish everyone would boycot American IDOL such crap. Thats the problem with music today, they should kick his arse back to England with Simon Fuller. Those arseholes are responsible for such crap as the Spice Girls. Remember Cowell was a nobody until he came to the US. He should show some more respect to this country

Taylor Hicks | 1/12/2007, 10:18 am EST

Taylor Hicks is right and so is Kelly Clarkson, I don’t blame them at all not wanting to be assoicated with that SHIT show American IDOL. Simon is pathetic he knocked Clarkson for not letting him use her music for the show saying she needs to thank the fans but at the same time Cowell needs to kissing the American public’s arse and thanking us the American public for making him rich
He’s a greedy fucker always in the take and never gives anything back to America in return

Kiki | 1/12/2007, 10:30 am EST

sinatra_fan_nyc | 1/12/2007, 10:32 am EST

ehmmm…

who’s simon cowell and what’s “american idol”??

s_f

Zoom Zoom Zoom... | 1/12/2007, 12:28 pm EST

Picture this…the lights go out and the crowd grows hush…did the American Idol set lose it’s electricity?? No….a lone white spotlight hits the stage, into it walks a short wirey figure with an acoustic guitar and a large cowboy hat. He strums the A-chord and starts singing, in his wartorn scraglly voice “Early one mornin’ the sun was shinin’ and he was layin’ in bed…” Absolute quiet from the audience as they listen to every word like it’s the first time they’ve heard it…ending on a lopping harmonica solo the lone figure steps back from the mic, spotlight diligently trying to follow, and squints….what does he see? As the lights go back up he sees a sea of people STANDING and clapping. Some are more ecstatic than others but they are ALL standing and clapping.

See, this happens wherever the man goes. You may not like him, you may not be able to stand his vocals, but whenever he performs or appears on a stage ANYWHERE outside of his usual concerts he gets a standing ovation….you watch next time you see him on TV and I bet they stand at the end…out of sheer respect. There is no other cultural figure still alive that holds such a legacy nor do I believe will there ever will be again.

The interesting part about the above story is that even if I wasn’t the biggest Dylan fan this side of the Mississippi it would all still be true!

Simon obviously has a strong opinion about Bob and I respect everyones EDUCATED opinion, but when you haven’t heard ALL of his 45+ albums or have seen him in more than one of his numerous “versions of himself” you couldn’t possibly make any hypothesis on the talent of Bob Dylan. I view Simon’s opinion as merely one of someone that has had a limited exposure to Bob and doesn’t care to go further simply because his ignorance won’t let him get past that scraggly voice.

DC | 1/12/2007, 12:33 pm EST

Mitch Miller, who was then head of A&R at Columbia Records, says Hammond brought Dylan in to play at the office. “I will admit, I didn’t see the greatness of him, “ Miller says. At the time, Columbia’s big stars were singers such as Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett. “But when somebody like John Hammond is so confident of somebody’s talent, you have to respect that, if for no other reason than his track record,” Miller says.

It’s ‘thought’ not though.

Dylan’s poetry transcends music,he wrote and rhymed what we were screaming, get out of war in any form.He was able to have a generation know they, not corporate America owned their future. He spoke of peace and hardships of common man.Hollis Brown was far more real to us than the so called “bubble gum” music on am radio.Seeger and Guthrie wrote anti war poems but Dylan had the magic to reach millions with this sincereity and message.

Who writes of the fears and carnage todays soldiers live in? Dave Matthews maybe. You might argue John Fogerty could not sing but like Dylan he had a message, how many of you had to actually RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE BECAUSE THE DEVIL’S ON THE LOOSE,DON’T LOOK BACK.

You can’t know much less understand Dylan’s mystique unless you were there.Berkley,Kent State,Woodstock, NY, Monterey CA,where Eric Burdon sang his poem about religion being born.Atlanta raceway where a quarter of a million people gathered to celebrate freedom, hear poetry being sung, and make the statement the old way is over.My generation went from a black tie crewcut school boy, to individualism not seen since before World War 1.

Now it has changed from our plastic world we detested and tried to change, to a shrink wrap get it in fifteen colors now even if it is utterly useless mentality. So those who are berating a visionary poet you get the simon sez world you ask for.
-
You that have never heard a Dylan or CC Revival poem in your mind while cowering in a jungle in the rain far far from home,or been wrongly imprisoned, or know someone who has just don’t get it.Those who stand and applaud Dylan, well they do.
-
Mr Tambourine Man, we thank you…..

As a musician, I honestly think that Dylan is EXTREMELY overrated. I won’t deny that he was arguably the greatest poet in the second half of the 20th century. But there have been tons and tons of better singers and guitarists than him, over the years, and a decent amount of bands/musicians that have accumulated a more impressive collection of music over the years.

Mercedes McGinley | 1/17/2007, 4:14 pm EST

Bob Dylan is the best singer out there besides Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, and other people thatdo music in that genre. Kelly Clarkson is just another wanna-be singer on A.I. She isn’t that great of a singer. Simon is a complete idiot anyway and has no idea what music is if he think Bob Dylan is a terrible “put me to sleep poet” singer. He’s so inspirational to many people. Evertime I’m feeling upset or not in that great of a mood, I’ll put his music in the player and he makes me happy. Simon, get a grip and please dont say Kelly Clarkson is better than Bob Dylan, it makes yourself look worse, (than what you really are). Bob Dylan, his music is so good, rich, well put together, exciting, and helpfull in many ways….he can actually sing too. Kelly can not sing worth crao and the only thing she does is sing about absolutley nothing…Bob Dylan, his music had meaning behind it ALL…..Kelly’s doesn’t. :)

Jonathan D | 1/18/2007, 12:56 am EST

I agree with RS in that I felt though Simon is a bloodsucking monger, he had some idea as to what music was about. So now we come to find he eats his own vomit, and like the crap he churns out, he will be remembered for not only helping assassinate good music in the early 00’s, but also for creating worthless television that would spawn countless duplicates of equal or lesser quality. The fact that he would even compare Bob Dylan to Kelly Clarkson shows his inability to distinguish a Moet & Chandon from 2-Buck-Chuck, respectively.

zach | 1/18/2007, 6:53 am EST

I seriously doubt that Dylan or any Dylan fan really cares what Simon Cowell thinks of him or his music. Dylan makes music that he wants to make. Sometimes people like it and sometimes they don’t.

Lizzy | 1/19/2007, 9:35 pm EST

Bob Dylan was one of the greatest musicians of all time, he defined a generation, and he was the first person to give the Beatles the green,Simon Cowell is just hanging on in quiet desperation – it’s the English way.

JMark | 1/21/2007, 2:21 pm EST

I love Dylan, though he is somewhat inconsistent. When he soars, he has no peers. But that’s just my opinion. My guess is that in a hundred years people will still recognize the name Bob Dylan. If one were to mention Simon Cowell, they’d hear “Simon who?” And if, by chance they watched a century old episode of American Idol, well..there’s no telling what they’d say, but dollars to donuts it wouldn’t be positive. JMark

Frank McLaughlin | 1/22/2007, 4:30 pm EST

Some moron calls the RS writer an idiot, announces that he has studied music and “saw Dylan in the beginning,” but he spells Dylan’s name…Dillon. It’s what makes these blogs so hard to read.

Dylan has a few masterpieces…Blood on the Tracks; Highway 61 Revisited…but his last ten albums are repetitive, the same simple chords, plodding, hookless music that is difficult to listen to. Very few write good rock and roll after 35.

DeportSimonCowell | 1/22/2007, 9:02 pm EST

Why should anyone care what Cowell say’s he’s a pathetic moron who gets a kick insulting people. (who childish and simple minded, very 8th grade). I know most of the people on AI cannot sing but to give people a kicking about their looks is a bit ’sad’. Prehaps we should play the same below the belt
jokes back to Cowell and joke about the dealth of his father wouldn’t that be funny………..
(that’s his level)

matt | 1/23/2007, 12:10 am EST

british people just don’t get bob dylan.

teagandeath | 1/27/2007, 2:58 am EST

i guess that guy doesn’t get that “singing” is about the soul and about passion and the mastery of words…

John B | 1/30/2007, 8:22 pm EST

Lets see Cowell has $250 million dollars $100 millon in properties in LA, London, Spain and the UAE (Dubai) and $5 million on cars, he insults and shit talks disadvantage people and special needs people on AI and thinks thats funny, he loves money and hasn’t contributed or donated a single cent to any charity at all
thats the arrogant bastard you are dealing with!

Mercedes M. | 2/6/2007, 8:32 am EST

Okay…..Matt…um yeah British people don’t understand Dylan what so ever.(I give you props on that one.) Simon is an idiot an is wierd, he really has no idea what he is talking about half of the time. Dylan has a different kind of voice. Either you like it or you don’t…..some people like it and I do….Simone is a cow….so w/e!!!

simonhater | 2/8/2007, 1:57 am EST

it’s truly pathetic that simon cowell would even consider talking up the name bob dylan.
for someone who managed the ’spice girls’ wow he must really have a spot for talent ; )
for people who want to listen to emotionless pop gimicly induced pop r’n'b songs with a boring backbeat and repitive lyrics about trying to be pathetic thin and taking about how their boyfriend might leave them vice versa go ahead and watch american idol, just don’t even have the frickin nerve to judge bob dylans music on the frekking way.
who wnats to watch a show that has three judges who can’t say a word without mutter the work dawg and a boozy faded out pop-ster and a english COW-well that doesn’t even know what a protest song is.

i honestly think it’s sad that american idol and a huge repetitiveness to it’s stupid pop culture, it’s all whitney/mariah wanabes, i’m really getting sick of them, same song after song, you honestly call this entertainment?
same on you if you do.

simon cowell is just looking for attention because he’s not getting any attention for his attemp to get paul boozy after he slipped ‘coke’ into her COKE.

i do not consider mediocre teenagers ‘with a dream’ entertaining, i wanna hear music, i want to hear the strumming of a damn guitar!! i want to see a contestant sit down a write their own song and play the piano, i want to see that the song actually has real emtion not them singing about a boyfriend who’s cheating on them because they’re fat and ugly or vice versa.

my version of simons comment:
“bores me to beers”-thats how depressing the music simon produces makes me wanna become an alcoholic.

i don’t care what music you like just don’t neglish REAL music along the way.

FrankThreeKings | 2/9/2007, 2:04 pm EST

Simon’s eaten a lot of boy creampies, so his comments on the Shakespeare of our time simply can’t be taken seriously.

a murphy | 2/11/2007, 1:49 pm EST

yeah i agree simon cowell is an attention seeking talentless nobody but to say that British people don’t get Dylan is unfair. he still has the industry by the balls this side of the atlantic.

julie | 2/12/2007, 10:51 am EST

Dylan is too good for AI. I think Simon recognizes that, and understands that the audience for AI would not understand or appreciate a Dylan theme like they would mindless Kelly Clarkson type of entertainment.

Julian | 2/12/2007, 11:51 pm EST

When they release a new history book about rock n’ roll, you’ll never see Simon Cow…. what ever his name is. He brings nothing to the world of music or rock n’ roll but more one hit blunders. Dylan…..well, where do you start, the man has written more songs than anyone, and more quality songs. He re-invents the wheel everytime he puts out an album, “Simon, your mom won’t even miss you!”

Big al | 2/28/2007, 4:52 pm EST

Hey MO .. you are right dylan is totally over rated less wineing please bob he stinks !! now neil young thats a legend

Alobar | 3/2/2007, 9:06 am EST

I totally agree with Simon.See, AI sucks large donkey dicks, and Bob is the Man. The Man should not lower himself to the sucking of donkey dicks.

Josh Cagle | 3/6/2007, 2:26 pm EST

This just goes to show how the American public no longer respects good music. The factory that is the pop music industry turns out a new star every week in which the average career of one of these so called artists lasts no more than a year. How long has Bob Dylan held a place in our hearts. Need I say more.
Cheers to Dylan.

Richard | 3/8/2007, 10:18 pm EST

What’s this England doesn’t get Dylan. Lots of American artists end up in Europe, look at all the jazz masters who came to Paris, the Beat writers, underground comic artists. Er actually strickly speaking that’s France but you get my point. Dylan has some important French award cos there is respect for him which he never got in the States. Londoners tripped out to Blonde on Blonde not Iron Butterfly

shock and awe | 3/9/2007, 11:09 am EST

I simply cannot believe this! I mean ok this Simon guy criticizes people for sucking at music but C’mon i would think that he would get how important Bob Dylan is to music. I may be only a 21 year old guy but god damn if I wouldn’t say that Dylan is one of the all time greatest people to ever release a record. Yea I know he wouldn’t draw 30 million people but I’d rather listen to Dylan on his worst day than to one of theese AI people on their finest days. Dylan’s music is why we have AI. does he have the voice of some of theese people on the show? No but if we just cared about the accuracy of the notes that someone played then we would never have made dylan into the legend he is. His music transcended the the bounds of music and it just puts this junk today to shame. Name one band or singer who doesnt list dylan as an inspiration and I’ll show you a liar! c’mon its common knowledge that Dylan is better than theese AI people, so why even have a debate? It just gives this simon guy credibility. He can say see people are debating what I said I must be relevant. But hes not!

willy D | 3/21/2007, 1:25 am EST

bob dylan has more talent in his left nut than simon dilldoe will ever dream of having. Fucking wanker.

"Freddy or not here I come" | 3/21/2007, 11:27 pm EST

True or False?

Rolling Stone magazine had rated 12 Dylan songs within the top 500 of all time with “Like a Rolling Stone” @ the #1 spot.

True or False?

In a Rolling Stones interview of Dylan, (which, because of the intrinsic humble spirit he has) was his first public interview in 20+ years, he was questioned about “OTHER’s” views on him being a Prophet or Messiah, he quickly shunned those theories and put himself in a more down to earth calling saying that Elvis, maybe I could be Elvis but a Prophet? No!

Besides that mister simon, we sympathize with you ’cause us insiders know that YOU CAN’T OPEN UP YOUR MIND TO EVERY CONCEIVABLE POINT OF VIEW.

Dylan seeks no refuge or Shelter from the Storm of AI or RS.

DYLAN was born like us all and will perish from the earth as we all must, so will simon,(the man gets no capitol letters here) what is left behind by both?
Maybe in fifty years they will have simon 101 @ Harvard University
and he can be scrutinized and disected to find how his Words of Wisdom and his cultural introspective has inherently changed every song writer that has come after him.
Dylan gave his kudos to his predecessors ’cause he knows that “AS GREAT AS YOU ARE MAN YOU’LL NEVER BE GREATER THAN YOURSELF…
AND THEN TURN AND SAY HE DIDN’T REALLY CARE”.

He is not out to be great.
Not in his debut March of 1962 nor in the here and now.

What he has given us is “ANTEDILUVIAN”.
simon says look it up!

The kicker is that Mr. Robert Zimmerman didn’t create the Master Plan. He only gave us insight to THE MASTERS of WAR.

Besides that, little simon man,
all Dylan really wanted to do is baby be friends with you.

Hunter S. Thompson | 3/29/2007, 10:01 am EST

Bobby and I go way back. Three months ago we were sitting in Vegas drinking a russian slut when all of a sudden out pops Simon from around the corner. Simon came up to Bobby and gave him a big hug and Bobby broke his glass on the bar and stabbed Cowell in the back. So, you see here folks, there is a reason Simon holds a grudge. What can you expect when a guy gets stabbed in the back by a russian slut?

monkeefever | 3/30/2007, 9:06 pm EST

If Simon actually listened to
Bob Dylan’s songs he might have a
slight chance at understanding
how rediculous his comments about
Mr. Dylan are.
Makes ya wonder who this star~finder will diss next.
Tom Waits or Mark Knopfler perhaps? Hmmm!!

Ben | 4/13/2007, 8:19 pm EST

Dylan is G O D. no questions or contradictions. whoever wants to refute me can try, go ahead. prove me wrong I dare you. As for simon, he entitled to his opinion but honestly, how much do you put into a guy whos on American Idiot?

Sarah | 4/14/2007, 6:27 am EST

This is what happens when you put Idiots in charge. They shoot their mouths off, but sooner or later they shoot themselves in the feet.

blue-eyed soul man | 4/20/2007, 1:07 pm EST

Dylan is undeniably one of the most influential poet/conposer/performers of music history–You can not even place Simon Cowell in the same discussion. He is just another name on the endless list of financially successful music industry executives who have helped create the state of “Pop” music today. It was always about the songs–the words, the rhythms and the melodies–Do you think Cowell ever played a gig for free drinks and tips? He definitely needs a weather vane to know which way the wind blows…

There’s a herbie hancock concert tonight and I thought I just see-saw one of his band walk by state police headquarters. Why don’t you do some good? And Desire? that was one of the stupidest records I ever heard. Like Jersey Road is in Sydney. Hornsby way.
Anne loved that. Knew it was all about her. Gave “it” away to me for over a year. Then what?

vu | 5/8/2007, 7:27 pm EST

Simon Cow was just saying his taste for music. He did not deny Bob Dylan is a genius, simply his music does not appeal to his ears. That is fair enough.
I suppose you guys are all in love with Bob and in hatred with Cow so you miscommented Cow’s statement.
Cow just simply opinioned that Bob’s music is not catchy or temporary (in this Idol’s time. Oops Cow mismentioned it in Bob’s time) therefore he wouldnt vote for Bob to be an AI.
I dont think all the AIs deserve your hatred because of Cow’s own opinion.
It is easy to dishonestly deny all the AIs’ talents or vocal ranges.
You never watch AI, thats your entitled rejection. But why don’t you give it a try for some tracks by Cow’s best AI cows such as Fantasia Barrino, Melinda Dolittle, Jordan Spark, Clay Aiken ..before denying them. It might turn our your don’t like their musics and styles but it’s sure that you can honestly acknowledge their vocal talents, sparks and fire in performing.

apparently there are many stupid motherfuckers in this world. If you really listen to dylan’s music and lyrics, you WILL respect him. whats up with these 14 year olds on here saying dylan sucks, just because they heard 15 seconds of one of his songs and decided its boring. as for simon saying he prefers kelly clarkstons music over dylans, it shows how much he knows about good music

Greeting. Like anyone else, there are days I feel beautiful and days I don’t, and when I don’t, I do something about it.
I am from Hungary and also am speaking English, please tell me right I wrote the following sentence: “Upward, during the hard people and angry lyrics, minimal skinheads, men, topics and subculture punkabilly in the uk articulated the villain of both the lift and ‘flyout.”

Thank you very much ;-) . Susan.
