In Brief: Mos Def Album Not Actually Out, Jolie Cool With Madonna, Cohen Reissues on the Way

  • Just in case you thought record labels finally had their shit together: Geffen has recalled Mos Def’s True Magic, which was originally released on December 29th, during a notoriously dead time of year for record-buying. True Magic has only sold 11,000 copies and, apparently, Mos Def and the label decided they could really do much better with a fresh start. So: the already-released True Magic — which was rushed out because of an early December leak — is actually a “limited edition pre-release” and the real True Magic will be out, with new tracklist, this spring. [Thanks Pitchfork.]
  • Angelina Jolie says she’s actually cool with Madonna, even though AJ was quoted as saying, “I would never take a child away from a place where adoption is illegal” earlier this week, in re Madonna’s adoption of a Malawi boy. “The article included many falsehoods,” Jolie said in a statement. “I said many positive things that were omitted.
  • The UK’s Rough Trade Records has signed a deal to get US distribution of their albums. This means you’ll soon be able to get your hands on Jarvis Cocker’s without paying import fees on Amazon.com.
  • Columbia/Legacy will release Leonard Cohen’s first three albums in late March with restored sound and bonus tracks. Nice!
  • Gig news: The Shins will play a midnight show at New York’s Virign Records on January 22nd, and Wolfmother have announced a smattering of North American tour dates.
  • Just in time for your first paycheck of the year: A bunch of Johnny Cash’s personal effects will be auctioned off in Arizona later this month. The items include gold records, handwritten lyrics to “Don’t Slam the Door,” and a to-do list with items like “Not Smoke” and “Kiss June.”

It’s about time that someone from the Organic/Soul Rap Trio With Delayed Albums Since 1999(Mos,Q-Tip,and Pharoche Monch)decided to finally stepped up to the plate(even though he came out with “The New Danger” in ‘03 or ‘04,it got some bad flak).I’ll be the first to cop it.By the way,I saw “Brown Sugar” for the first time last Christmas,FANTASTIC movie!
