Is Weird Al — the guy that brought you “Eat It” and made sure the melody from that Chamillionaire song was stuck in your head for a month longer than it would have been — worthy of induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? A great many of his fans think so, and some of them have organized a grassroots’ campaign to get Al elected to the Hall — complete with a downloadable petition and requests for “field operatives” to go around collecting signatures. While we admire the spirit behind a good grass-roots initiative, we can’t quite get behind this one. Granted, homeboy is the most famous parody artist of all time and also managed to make a two-decades-plus career of it. He’s made us laugh several times. But he’s also pop music’s answer to “Mad Magazine” — a guy whose entire creative process involves simply rejiggering the lyrics to huge pop hits for parodies that really ain’t all that clever. For some perspective, check out this classic fake article from the Onion, “’Weird Al Yankovic Nears Completion of ‘Livin La Vida Mocha’.”

i’m not so sure, how do greg kihn and coolio feel about this issue?…
drn | 1/9/2007, 4:46 pm EST
im white and nerdy
Rowr | 1/9/2007, 4:50 pm EST
Weird Al sure would make a better inductee than a lot of the crap they let in.
At least his exhibit would be fun…
R&RGirl | 1/9/2007, 4:53 pm EST
maybe honorary?
WallZ | 1/9/2007, 4:57 pm EST
I totally disagree; I’m no fan but the man does have talent. He is able to mirror almost anything; also he has made some funny originals as well.
Hell, maybe I am a fan….
Tom | 1/9/2007, 4:58 pm EST
I actually think Al should get in at some point, but look at who is NOT in yet, Rush, Yes, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Heart, Roxy Music, The Cars, The Cure, Dire Straits, The Raspberries, Grand Funk Railroad, The Guess Who, Mott The Hoople, The J. Geils Band, Joe Walsh, ( as a solo act), Lou Reed, The moody Blues, Pat Benatar, Steve Miller, Thin Lizzy, Three Dog Night, Todd Rundgren, Warren Zevon, X, I really think all the acts I mentioned should be in there, you may argue some, The Raspberries, and Thin Lizzy, Todd Rundgren, for sheer influence, same with Rush, and X too. They all deserve to be there, and all have met the 25 year requirement.
likroper.com | 1/9/2007, 5:05 pm EST
that raspberries song ‘go all the way’ has really heavy guitar on it (for it’s time) and the drums are all overloaded and stuff, then it goes clean tone…very cool…it’s very similar in structure to ’sing me away’ by nightranger…
FG | 1/9/2007, 5:11 pm EST
I wonder what will happen twenty years from now and we have to decide if a hip-hop artist gets into the rock hall of fame? A typical hip-hop artist rips off other artists and rewrite it with mostly new lyrics. Does Kanye or Eminem or Jay-Z get in?
taint | 1/9/2007, 5:15 pm EST
hey dipshits at rs…al writes his own material too.
a couple examples: happy birthday, stuck in a closet with vanna white, dare to be stupid, etc.
jau | 1/9/2007, 5:32 pm EST
who cares about the rock n roll hall of fame to begin with?
rockstarsbaby678 | 1/9/2007, 5:34 pm EST
ok…
jau…what the hell?
…and weird al rocks.
CheckTheFacts | 1/9/2007, 5:42 pm EST
In case Rolling Stone would like to actually post factual articles, then they may want to do their research. Weird Al does compose original songs on a regular basis. You may even want to note that one of his best songs, “Dare To Be Stupid,” is a Weird Al original. It is so good, in fact, that the lead singer of Devo hates Weird Al for composing the masterpiece in the genre that they (Devo) were trying to perfect. Try not to be so stupid next time you post something Rolling Stone.
Max Creek | 1/9/2007, 5:48 pm EST
The guy’s creative process also includes hilarious spot-on video parodies, not just rewritten lyrics. Smells Like Nirvan? His Bob Dylan “Don’t Look Back” video? Jesus Christ, if they’re gonna let cowbell cretins like Grand Funk in, Weird Al should definitely be elected to the Hall.
boo boo | 1/9/2007, 6:05 pm EST
i have to say even though he’s a geek,he has had staying power and has become an icon weither we admit it or not, and still is the only one successful at what we does!
right said fred | 1/9/2007, 6:12 pm EST
Doesn’t what you just described also pertain to rap music?
ken vail jr. | 1/9/2007, 8:10 pm EST
i like what Tom had to say…i forgot about the raspberries, one of the greatest power-pop bands ever….and the genius known as Todd Rundgren.
w0nderwall | 1/9/2007, 8:20 pm EST
I respect Weird Al for his career, he had a good one. But he doesn’t deserve getting into any Hall of Fame just like Mark McGuire doesn’t deserve it for the Baseball Hall of Fame either. I will tell who does deserve it though, Oasis. Their first two records are what classic rock records are all about and they continue to release timeless classic hits like Lyla and Songbird.
Doug | 1/9/2007, 8:38 pm EST
It’s beyond a joke that Rush still doesn’t get nominated. They were dominating and cutting edge when REM were playing roller skating rinks. Thirty years together, 23 albums, 10 in Billboard’s Top Ten, still blow the doors off of any live band today, influencing loads of bands like Tool, Primus and Metallica, and most importantly, never, ever let their fans down.
paul | 1/9/2007, 8:39 pm EST
Al is not hall of fame material,he just redoes other peoples music, trying to be funny. I can’t stand him!! Next they will be letting rap and hiphop in,they are not rock n’ roll!!
paul | 1/9/2007, 8:45 pm EST
Prism,Survivor or 707 should be inthe hall of fame. Not comedy crap which isn’t even original!! Rolling Stone is not a RnR magazine anymore. Now it has at it’s core C”rap” ,hip hop neither of which are rock n’ roll much less music!
Lobsters | 1/9/2007, 9:16 pm EST
Al doesn’t need that Hall Of Fame shit – He’s FUNNY! And he’s been funny for YEARS. How long did he Golden Age Of Jack Black last – Three years?
Scott | 1/9/2007, 10:11 pm EST
The rock and roll hall of fame is pointless and a waste of time. who are a few suits to say what’s “Rock and Roll” and what isnt? i say listen to your favorite artist (whatever that may be) and just ignore the idiots who tell you what to listen to
sonic youth | 1/9/2007, 11:52 pm EST
sonic youth rock n roll hall of fame class of ‘07!
john | 1/10/2007, 1:33 am EST
AL is definatley hall material…if the Sex Pistols and Grandmaster Flash made it(both 1 hit or 1 album wonders) than anyone can get in…..
fishsticks | 1/10/2007, 2:37 am EST
Half the songs on each of Al’s albums are original compositions. You’d think ROLLING FUCKING STONE could do some research.
kev | 1/10/2007, 9:12 am EST
Remember folks you have to have been recording for 25 years to get nominated. So any band that was at least recording from 1982 and before.
Weirder Al | 1/10/2007, 9:18 am EST
Unless William Shatner is in, they should just tear the place down.
whitney | 1/10/2007, 9:53 am EST
Although I do believe that weird al is entertaining, I dont think he’s exactly rock. If great bands like Rush and Yes arn’t in yet, then he shouldn’t be either. Yes, the man has talent. Musically he has no limits. He can sing a ballad decently and then go from that to rapping. He definatly has skill. But that skill, to me, is not enough to get him in to the rock and roll hall of fame, especially since thats not what his main genre is.
Steve | 1/10/2007, 10:01 am EST
I like the idea.
MarkArrow | 1/10/2007, 10:22 am EST
The Sex Pistols took our money and laughed at us. Al receives our money willingly and makes us laugh. I ask you, I today’s Dr. Phil feel good culture what is more important? Why being stolen from and abused of course! If we merely felt good all the time, what would we have to complain about? Why, without anything to complain about, how would million of American’s find their true identity? We are a nation of complainers who have everything and yet, deep inside, we want people to steal from us so we put them on a pedestal.
No, AL should not make it. He is a Xerox machine in need of a service call.
What the HOF should do is create a Junior Varsity squad for Al and several others such as Rush, the Cars, Kajagogo and Moby Grape. they could all meet in the back room of a Stuckeys or IHOP.
jungleland | 1/10/2007, 10:26 am EST
I say no to Al, he is not Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Material.
Missing:
Cheap Trick
Kiss
Alice Cooper
ELO / Jeff Lynne (as a producer)
Dire Straits
Rush
The Cars
Big Star
then it’s time to get out of the 1970’s for good.
The Replacements should be up soon, right??
travis.watkins002 @ YIM | 1/10/2007, 10:26 am EST
Hmmm… who gives a s88t about the Hall any way? this is pointless to even think about…
edward | 1/10/2007, 11:26 am EST
!? ^_^-_-
trackfreak | 1/10/2007, 11:53 am EST
what the hell? Oasis? what’s the matter w/ you? first of all they haven’t even reached 25 years yet. second there are other bands out there alot more deserving than them, and i would say Wierd Al deserves it more than Oasis does. not to mention there’s Rush, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Grand Funk, Steve Miller, Pat Benatar, Thin Lizzy, Three Dog Night, Heart, and Dire Straits that haven’t been voted in, and no offense on Weird Al but i think most of them deserve it before Al does. but none the less i would vote for him.
ERik | 1/10/2007, 12:06 pm EST
He should get in based solely on his song “Genius In France”
-Hail Zappa!
Del Mcronde | 1/10/2007, 2:20 pm EST
Blue Oyster Cult-Major Early Metal/Punk Influence and massive hit Don’t Fear the Reaper!
Rush-Just Amazing Enough Said!
Kiss-Extremely Huge Band, Very overrated but definitely should be in!
The Cars-New Wave Pop Heroes!
Other that should be in!
Iron Maiden
Def Lepp
Thin Lizzy
Genesis
Cheap Trick
Yes
Jethro Freakin Tull!! Holy smoke I would think they would be a hall of fame voters wet dream!
baconballs | 1/10/2007, 2:29 pm EST
Weird Al in the HOF? Why not? The guy is still a household name, right? I don’t listen to his stuff, but why not? They let Madden and Steve Young in the Pro Football HOF, so this is no more or less egregious.
And yeah, why the Hell isn’t Rush in there yet? And REM – Please talk Bill into going on tour and making one last record before you quit…please.. that 3 legged dog is NOT the one going into the hall.
ken vail jr. | 1/10/2007, 3:08 pm EST
the best part every year is seeing that ceremony on vh1, which is always entertaining-no matter who gets in you know?
Alice Stubbs | 1/10/2007, 3:19 pm EST
The Beetles should make it they had alot of hits in the sixties and seventies. BEach Boys are in it I wonder when The Beetles will be?

Stevie Ray Vaughn is a great piano player and singer! He is blind too, you never see that! He will be in for sure I bet!

What’s happening to Rock and Roll?????
dumb_n00b | 1/10/2007, 5:31 pm EST
Dude, I’m not going to tell you your article sucks, which it doesn’t, but the fact is that Weird Al is not some high school kid on a drunken karaoke night singing more explicit/silly lyrics to pop songs.
He is an artist who has written better original songs than a lot of so-called “serious” artists.
His replication of the style of greats and losers alike, whether in parodies, pastiches or polkas, is far more deserving than those who rip off one artist, don’t tell anyone, and stick with it.
Jospeh | 1/10/2007, 5:37 pm EST
I am not satisfied until Joyce makes it in
Halo Razorhead | 1/10/2007, 6:26 pm EST
You greatly underestimate Weird Al’s influence. What the hell does Rolling Stone know, anyway? I interned there once in NYC — I wasn’t allowed to wear JEANS, for chrissakes!
AJ | 1/14/2007, 10:55 pm EST
PLEASE do some research before blindly writing about Weird Al.
Al is multi-talented and has not only parodied music– he has improved it.
Puhleeze do the research. I woulda thought Rolling Stone would have at least done that but surprise! they didn’t!
ray | 1/23/2007, 9:15 pm EST
thin lizzy!
jake | 3/25/2007, 3:58 am EST
without rush or yes the hall has a giant hole in it.
Anise | 7/21/2007, 10:14 am EST
I won’t list of bunch of bands who deserve to be part of the “American” RR Hall of Fame.-Get it, It does not belong to certain editors. Some of you have done a really good job of listing slighted Bands. And why not the Moody Blues you ask, Well some people feel that their music is too intelligent and thie music is too packed with lyrical content. Oh pardon me they do not repeat the same catchy phrase over and over again. Despite what people say to denegrate them I think they are very original in their musicianship (oh that is the term for people who can actually play their instuments.) Maybe their fans are too intelligent for Rolling Stone and the Hall.
Schram | 9/27/2007, 10:48 pm EST
I saw until Chicago gets in, Weird Al can shove the microphone up his ass. Espcially with people like Love not in.
—Tom
Holden | 9/28/2007, 10:33 am EST
Wow, Chicago is STILL not in the Hall of Fame? That’s just plain silly. And Rush, too? What is the Hall thinking? Isn’t Wenner on the Hall’s board? Oh hell, what am I thinking, Wenner sold his soul to the devil long ago. Rock n roll and Rolling Stone have turned into parodies of themselves. Sad, really. Rock is dead.
john | 9/28/2007, 8:16 pm EST
The beastie boys are being slected to be in the hall of fame but not Rush, just stop and think about that for a minute or two. They are one of the top bands ever,we can say maybe next year but we already know the answer to that!Rush is in the top 10 this year in concert sales, what are the beastie boys doing these days?

Nice to see the DC5 and Ventures on the board. But Madonna – what the hell is that about? And yes, the time has come for Rush to be in the R&R HOF. Long overdur.
Chris | 9/28/2007, 10:52 pm EST
Beastie Boys..Afrika Bambaata.. Madonna…
Question, not attacking other’s not listed above, BUT ! where are the artistic impression of playing music.. ya know acually playing an instrument? NOT “pushing” a button and “sing” to a drum machine. I mean, Afrika’s music is all Kraftwerk’s music. Cool as it is.. it dosen’t, and shouldn’t be a red carpet ride into the RARHOF. RAP is NOT rock in roll ! DISCO at the least used musicians. Thats why I have no problem with Donna Summer. Killer voice.
I don’t know who you people are that vote in inductees, but, you all need some help looking at bands that have been around before the MTV audience. Who’s next guys? huh Wall of Voodoo? another classic 1 hit wonder? hmm? How about Red Rider? Sound good? Idiots!
Chris | 9/28/2007, 10:56 pm EST
RUSH!!! Best influence of learning and knowing how to do it!
3 guys and a wall of sound that sounds perfectly like the 19 albums they have put out over 34 years.
A C | 9/30/2007, 2:06 am EST
It’s amazing that everyone else except Genesis, Rush, Yes & King Crimson aren’t in, let alone even got one nomination. You know what, those bands are too good to be in. Screw the RRHOF.
A C | 9/30/2007, 2:06 am EST

Randy | 10/1/2007, 12:21 am EST
Like these nominees or not, this is not just about our favorite Rock band or who Rocks the hardest. Its about the Giants of the Rock & Roll Era! Musician that define not just POPULAR Music but an entire ERA & Generation. Very few artist can define an Era. Also, remember the Rock & Roll Era has had many genres over its 5 decades.
If there was a “Mount Rushmore” Of musical Giants of the Rock & Roll Era, these faces would be chiseled in the rock!
50’s Elvis / Little Richard / Chuck Berry
60’s Beatles / Aretha Franklin/ Rolling Stones
70’s Elton John / Donna Summer / Led Zeppelin
80’s Bruce Springsteen / Madonna
90’s Nirvana / Alanis Morrisette
These Superstars and a few others define their Era. I don’t love them all, but they are History .. enough Said
Kate | 10/1/2007, 2:26 am EST
Who the hell are these people who come up with the nominations? Far too many well deserved artists are being passed over for the likes of Madonna and the Beastie Boys, who in my opinion have no talent what so ever.
Total idiots!!!
Steve | 10/5/2007, 1:33 am EST
Neil Diamond should be in by now. He wrote some great rock and roll songs. Madonna has nothing to do with rock or rock and roll. She didn’t write any of her songs either.
Dan | 10/8/2007, 12:28 am EST
If I could nominate some deserving Hall of Famers, I’d suggest Genesis, Golden Earring, Jethro Tull, Yes, Cheap Trick, Moody Blues, The Zombies & Big Star.
General Overture | 12/13/2007, 9:05 am EST
Nazi prog rock does not need to be in the hall of fame. You can do some celtic folk crap with lyrics about Stonehenge (thanks Spinal Tap for showing how ridiculous it is) and be considered rock and roll. But god forbid you inject some american soul back into popular music, and white power advocates want to whine like babies about how its not rock. Get over yourselves!
kittyhawk | 12/15/2007, 9:50 pm EST
Madonna gets into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before KISS, Blue Oyster Cult, Mott the Hoople, Mick Ronson and innumerable more deserving performers?!?!?!? She shouldn’t be in it at all, let alone ahead of all these people!!!
DonDonB | 12/18/2007, 2:16 pm EST
Madonna gets in before Hall and Oates – the biggest selling rock duo of all time?? What’s up with that??
Shamanwise | 12/18/2007, 2:53 pm EST
Why are Hall & Oates not in the Hall of fame????
They’ve outsold the Everly Brothers and the Righteous Brothers and are the biggest selling duo of all time.
Please come to your senses, Powers That Be.
Mike H | 1/2/2008, 10:02 pm EST
Jann Wenner, you should fire yourself from the Rock Hall Committee.
You have turned what should have been a place that honors rock and roll and turned it into a private popularity contest.
You have created a place where only you, your friends and like minded individuals can play.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has truly become a Hall of Shame. And for that reason, I will never buy Rolling Stone magazine again. I encourage everyone to do the same.
Tony | 1/4/2008, 4:45 pm EST
Madonna before Rush?
Something is very wrong.
Al fan | 2/20/2008, 7:54 am EST
Al has outlasted most of the acts he parodies. He covers every genre and writes MOSTLY original songs. Of course he deserves to go in
Louise Hunter | 10/9/2009, 11:23 am EST
Weird Al TOTALLY belongs in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!
You said
“a guy whose entire creative process involves simply rejiggering the lyrics to huge pop hits for parodies that really ain’t all that clever. ”
No! 50% of his work is ORIGINAL MUSIC as well as original lyrics. Check out CNR, Craigslist, Skipper Dan, Ringtone from the recent Internet Leaks.
Also HALF of ALL the songs on his 12 albums likewise are original music and lyrics
Not all that clever? YOU try writing a song that is completely comprised of palindromes (”Bob”)
or one talking knowledgeably about human biology and anatomy (”Pancreas” and the stellar “Al’s Brain Song”)
Also another point you are missing… Al actually contributes to people’s sense of wellbeing in as far as laughter really is the best medicine.
Countless people have told me stories of how Al’s humour has helped them through illness and bereavement, depression and disadvantage. You are missing the point that Al is not just a national, but a global treasure of unique creativity, and positive energy and its about time you people realised it and wised up that you dont have to be some strange tortured poet or painted ghoul to rock the world
