Will Dave Matthews House Call Rate A Spot On The Guest Rock Star Hall of Fame?

1/8/07, 5:34 pm EST

house dave matthews

It’ll take more than a guest spot on House to redeem Dave Matthews from years spent turning perfectly nice AC/DC-blasting teens into simpering, jam-loving, khaki-short-wearin’ pain-in-the-ass frat boys, but we respect the fact that everybody has to start somewhere. House is the best medicine for an epidemic of crap reality TV. (Besides a public execution of Aaron Carter.) And the news that Matthews will be playing a piano prodigy with seizures on the next episode is intriguing. We know we will enjoy watching Hugh Laurie mocking Matthews. (Even if it IS make believe.) Still, we’re going to hold off on the negative reviews of Matthews’ performance. The rumor is that he’s a decent actor. Also rumored? Khaki shorts can cause impotence. Do what you want with that information frat boys!
Anyway, we thought it would be fun to stack Matthews up against other musicians with TV guest appearances. We’re not talking about that time Conor Oberst played his protest song on Leno. We’re limiting the list to instances in which actual rock-types ACTED on dramas or sitcoms. Here are our favorites…what are yours?

  • Johnny Cash in Columbo; he plays a murdering (but charming) country star.
  • Sebastian Bach on the Gilmore Girls; he plays the aging guitarist in Lane Kim’s band.
  • Adam Ant on Northern Exposure; he plays Brad Bonner, a rock singer who mistakes Cicely, Alaska for Sicily, Italy.

Is there any way you could find an excuse to post a picture of Hugh Laurie in glowering House-mode every day?

And in response to the question. . .Does Roger Daltrey’s gig hosting “Extreme History With Roger Daltrey” count? He just played himself, but he broke a $5000 bow made out of bone, farted on camera, discussed his wanking arm, and talked about using handcuffs with the wife all during the show’s 6-episode run. It was awesome. And if that doesn’t count, I nominate Roger’s recent CSi episode where he played a master-of-disguise multiple murderer with a penchant for slasher flick aliases.

Janie Jones | 1/8/2007, 5:44 pm EST

PS Alice Cooper playing Dungeons & Dragons with Booger from “Revenge of the Nerds” on “That ’70s Show” was also pretty cool.

Janie Jones | 1/8/2007, 5:45 pm EST

PPS Do Simpsons guest appearances count? I think U2 has to win that one.

Janie Jones | 1/8/2007, 5:45 pm EST

PPPS Now I’m just trying to be annoying.

likroper.com | 1/8/2007, 5:49 pm EST

the drummer in dave matthews is incredible, and what’s even more incredible is that they are able to play such a sort of musician oriented, free-form, almost 70s fusion-ish style of music and still be as hugely popular as they are…if you ask me; they are absolutely some of the hottest musicians to play in such huge places…you know; they can sell out shoreline amphitheatre two days in a row…incredible…

stafford | 1/8/2007, 10:16 pm EST

Leonard Cohen’s appearance on Miami Vice. Say no more.

Ellen or Igby | 1/8/2007, 10:30 pm EST

Wow, it looks like Rolling Stone is all about censorship. Thanks for deleting my comments. Rock n’ roll dudes.

Dave(NY) | 1/8/2007, 10:44 pm EST

Whats with the bashing of Dave obviously you don’t know that Dave Matthews Band is the most talented group out there now.

jhupp | 1/9/2007, 12:30 am EST

I’m pretty sure there was an episode of Matlock where Geraldo Rivera played a sleazy talk show host who had written a book about the women he had slept with and got murdered by one of them. The only real question is whether he has enough awareness of reality to recognize that he was parodying himself. I say no.

genia | 1/9/2007, 2:30 am EST

This “frat boy” stuff is old, get over it, move on. Dave Matthews Band are a good band …period. Don’t like the music, then fine,,but fans of the band range from 17 to 60, the “frat boys” who are fans have moved on, married with kids and jobs.. and yet, still there’s these moron columnists who cling to past. Try listening to their music.

Brandie | 1/9/2007, 5:40 am EST

And to think..Rolling Stone is supposed to know music?
Well, obviously the half-wit writer doing this article must never have heard Dave Matthews Band play..or seen Dave act before??? Perhaps you should sit down and listen to the band from one of many of their live albums?
I happen to be a 52 year old woman, far from being a “frat boy” and I’ve seen the band live many, many times.
Oh…and about that impotent comment? Dave and the Band all have kids too…not to mention they also are the most giving band aroud…most all of their money goes to charities…better check that part out…in case you find yourself jobless from other ridiculous articles such as this one and may need a helping hand from Dave…

Janie Jones | 1/9/2007, 9:15 am EST

Leonard Cohen was on Miami Vice?! Holy Pete! I’m going to Netflix the entire series now!

EGGMAN | 1/9/2007, 9:24 am EST

lets not forget Rick Springfield on General Hospital. man, that was awesome :) just kidding, of course.

Mike | 1/9/2007, 9:40 am EST

Dave Matthews Band is a pretty generic band. They have two songs: fast and slow. I’ve tried to like these guys, I really have, but they just don’t do it for me. Not sure what people see in these guys.

And on the topic, I’ll say Anthony Kiedis and Flea in “The Chase”. Those crazy guys. Look it up.

No Name | 1/9/2007, 10:49 am EST

Whoever wrote this item proves that you don’t have to know music to work at RS. It’s ok not to like DMB, but to dismiss them as a “jam” band shows this dude doesn’t have a clue.
As for the question, Sting did a pretty good job in a guest appearance on the old Ally McBeal show
cheers

mysterri | 1/9/2007, 2:40 pm EST

Let’s not forget LL Cool J’s excellent performance on “House” (and yes, please do post a pic of Hugh Laurie every day) and Ice-T’s equally incredible ongoing role in Law & Order: SVU.

Lobsters | 1/9/2007, 9:42 pm EST

Ace Frehley is in “Children Of Men”.

Janet W | 1/10/2007, 9:22 am EST

Just a note to let you know that I am not a frat boy but a 53 year old woman with a Masters Degree and a family. I did not start listening to DMB until I was 50. Why do I love the band: music, politics, intensity, quiet philanthropy, and Dave puts his emotions on the line if you bother to hear his voice and listen to his lyrics.

L | 1/10/2007, 11:16 pm EST

Looks like someone got their a** kicked by people in khakis. Oh and by the way, DMB is the best. What do you like, Justin Timberlake? Sissy.

rsjunky | 1/11/2007, 12:55 pm EST

Sucks they don’t have someone proof reading these articles, it seems kind of dangerous from a business standpoint doesn’t it?

C | 1/11/2007, 9:31 pm EST

Congradulations writer, you managed to make yourself look like a complete dumbass in front of however many hundreds or thousands of Dave Matthews Band fans that may read this.

TerriG | 1/13/2007, 8:51 am EST

Well, to each their own as far as which music touches you most. I’m and old broad and I love DMB, as well as other bands (diverse taste even). I’m a huge House fan as well. I’m soooo looking forward to seeing the episode!!! Perhaps people shouldn’t be so pissy :)

Kim | 1/13/2007, 10:04 am EST

I just wanted to say I’m thrilled my favorite guy is going to be on my favorite show. Knowing how funny Dave is, seeing him in convulsions might make me laugh instead of taking it seriously. But who knows, his acting abilities are very good. He might have me convinced. Can’t wait to see it.

Doug | 1/13/2007, 12:38 pm EST

Just chalk this column up in the list of reasons why I have no second thoughts of not renewing my subscription. This magazine has gone 100% downhill in the last several years. From a journalists stand-point the writing is crap (see the Justin Timberlake cover article where the point of it is to show how much weed the writer smokes with Timberlake).

A | 1/13/2007, 12:49 pm EST

Uhhh, whoever wrote this article basically made a fool out of themselves without even trying. A lot of DMB fans will be reading this and so don’t expect them to like any of YOUR writing anymore, and trust me, that’s a lot of people, including me. Dave Matthews Band is great and Dave Matthews is a great actor. Hello? Because of Winn-Dixie, great movie, great actor. I just can’t believe that you would say he’s a bad actor/singer or whatever, he’s my favorite singer ever and if you think differently, you obviously haven’t listened to them, so I would suggest you do so you dumbass.

dmatthewscutieuf | 1/14/2007, 1:03 am EST

YES..I agree with everyones comments basically..
You may be a great writer, but talking smack about Dave is wrong since he is a very good actor. I may be Bias, but it really is true.I would like to see him in more movies or tv shows. He has a movie coming out again I know.
Please get your facts straight before you start bashing artists:-) I don’t watch HOUSE but I will be checking this out:-)

Carrie | 1/14/2007, 1:47 am EST

I’m thinking if you’re going to bash the talent and impact of a well-known, well-liked artist like Dave Matthews–not to mention the bashing you’re giving his fans– you should probably be really advanced in your profession. And since your little article begins with the run-on-sentence from hell, I’m thinking you’re not so advanced. Work on your grammar and research and maybe next time you’ll get a by-line.

Coldfire | 1/14/2007, 7:04 pm EST

the writer of this article should never publish another article ever again, in fact you should just kill yourself. Dave is a great artist AC/DC couldnt even hold a candle to Dave by himself, lets not even talk about if the rest of the band were to come into play, “Rolling Stone” should be called “Rolling Peice of Shit” you guys have truely managed to be complete idiots, maybe you should stop worrying about that horrible TV show you have and worry about acutally employing writers with an I.Q. above “41″

Dee-MB | 1/15/2007, 9:21 am EST

I will agree with a previous comment… No more continuing subcriptions of RS in the future for me!!!! What a joke – Here’s a mag that is “supposed” to know music. The first 1 or 3 times they slammed DMB.. fine – I’m now completely convinced their pick of staff come from another planet. I’m a DMB fan yes, but also owning albums/cd’s and seeing live; Metalica, Sting, Rod Stewart, The Eagles, Billy Joel, Bel Biv Devoe, Maroon 5, The Beach Boys, Bob Segar, Tim McGraw, Green Day, U2, Snoop Dogg & Dr. Dre, Gwen Stefani, Neil Diamond.. Need I say more (I could)… Diversity – A term unknown to ROLLING STONE – Go figure… Bravo!!
My money spent on RS, I will now use on a 3rd DMB show this summer – Thanks RS!

tara | 1/16/2007, 8:09 am EST

I agree wholeheartedly with many of the comments. I too, don’t fit the khaki loving frat boy image. I’m a 33 professional married female, with a almost teenage daughter. I sadly wasn’t introduced to DMB until about 5 years ago. I was hooked from the start. Their incredible emotion behind their lyrics and music adds a sense of realness that is lacking in this world. They acknowledge anger, frustration with the lack of apathy in this day in age, love and with their charitable donations, they try to leave this world a little better then they found it. We drove cross country to experience them at the Gorge ampitheater and my only regret is I can’t do it every year. My daughter, niece and nephew received MP3 players for Christmas with songs like Everday, Gravedigger, Sing Along, Work it Out and Ants Marching. They love the upbeat sound. Talk about diversity, the ability of Dave and the band to play they way they do with many very different artists just works. Because of Winn Dixie was a long awaited film that doesn’t have the sugar coated Disney feeling of “everything is okay in the end”, it’s a far cry from the surreal Disney reality. Matthews character was suberb. All people make mistakes, so why pretend we’re perfect, though this writer seems to be teetering close to the edge of falling off his pedastel. I’d like to be the one to knock him off. Perhaps DMB and other bands that they view as lame (despite their very evident success) would like to give a review of RS. I hope DMB remains timeless, which is not what I can say of Rolling Stone.

Detroiter | 1/16/2007, 9:20 am EST

I don’t care much for rap or the Top 40 music, but I can appreciate a talented musician despite the sound. A writer for a supposedly musically adept magazine spewing this trash is a clear indication what a crap magazine Rolling Stone has become. Every point he makes about “Frat Boys” and “Khakies” is the same rederic haters have been saying since day one. Come up with an original though or valid point about why DMB sucks and maybe I’ll read it. Why am I wasting my keystrokes on a crap writer that probably has Britney Spears jaming in his Ipod. Goodbye Rolling Stone, I’ve just cancelled my subscription after more than 6 years. Cheers

RO041 | 1/16/2007, 9:53 am EST

This type of review trashes Dave Matthews and DMB in a manner only reserved for the likes of Britney Spears! It’s good to see tons of DMB fans posting comments these guys about how angry you are. As my witness, I will NEVER purchase Rolling Stone EVER again after such crap has been written. I could see if they just don’t like DMB style of music, but to spew such comments is like saying I don’t like classical music; therefore Mozart and Bach are horrible musicians. How could the editors allow such an illogical argument be proposed in such a manner. I don’t want to sound like the ruler in Iran or Syria where all opposition is wrong but come on! Tell me that DMB sucks becuase Carter Beauford has no rhythm, that LeRoi Moore only knows how to play one instrument, or that Dave Matthews lyrics about life, love, carpe diem, loss etc are as shallow as rapping about a pair of Nike Air Force Ones, blunts, bitches, and 50 inch spinning rims. That because they craft their origininal sound with instruments instead of remaking/sampling 70’s music with electronic drum machines and voice syntheziers that mask the lack of talent in these plastic surgery enhanced Ken and Barbie dolls selling more lunch pails then records do. Look at the test of time, how many one hit wonders or 1 album wonders flame out. Who is left standing after 14 years. Who sells out dozens of shows year after year all across the world. I’ve been to over 40 concerts, and I have seen all walks of life from 10 years old to 50, dancing and shouting the lyrics for 3 straight hours: Baby Boomers, Gen X, Gen Y, and every other group imaginable. Why don’ you crawl out from your whatever whole you have been living in and attend a show. Critique the music, the performance, have something meaninful to say.

drew | 1/16/2007, 9:26 pm EST

I agree with the fellow posters here. RS is always dogging on DMB. They’re just being haters. DMB is on top of the music world and will be for a long time! I notice that RS doesn’t have a problem with putting DMB on their cover because they know that will sell the magazine. I don’t subscribe to RS nor will I ever. I will only buy the mag when it covers DMB (see above comment) because I know it will be worth the purchase. Man up RS and admit that DMB is the best damn band around whether you like it or not. Stay strong fellow DMB fans! Keep standing up for the band!

Matt | 1/17/2007, 10:39 am EST

After reading this article I lost my respect for Rolling Stone. I canceled my FREE subscription today. This article is complete bull shit. Get someone to write who doesn’t have negative shit to say. Please, Rolling Stone… go watch “Before the Music Dies” and if you did, watch it again; you might learn something. Its sad that a magazine like RS has become such a poor magazine, company… and writers. Rolling Stone is falling off the deep end like MTV did years back (selling out). DMB has hundreds of thousands of supporters; many who read your magazine. Stupid article, stupid mistake. YOU LOST MY VOTE.

Matt | 1/18/2007, 4:50 am EST

I’ve always tried to be fair when reading articles about bands. Sometimes it’s hard to not take a side just because they’re getting down on your favorite band or artist. But to the author of this post – you made it too easy for everyone. This is one of the worst postings I’ve seen. You’ve started a chain reaction of people that are cancelling their subscriptions to Rolling Stone because you posted this degrading DMB information. You made yourself look like such a fool! One would think that you have to posses decent writing ability to work and post for Rolling Stone. However, you’ve proven this to be untrue. You should learn to not over generalize the fans and readers. For instance, only the minority of DMB fans even fit into this “khaki wearing pain in the ass frat boys” category you created. It’s just uncalled for you to write that rumor has it Dave is a decent actor, then write that also rumored is that khakis cause impotence? You are truly way too biased to write this article. A true writer discusses opposing viewpoints to show the strength of their argument. Yours is obviously a very weak one. If you had any true journalist in you, you would have tried to rent movies that have Dave Matthews in them. (”Where The Red Fern Grows” and “Because of Winn-Dixie”). I’m cancelling my subscription as well, I hope you’re happy with yourself.

Monish Patel | 1/18/2007, 2:36 pm EST

Having been a huge dave fan I can say this article is a bit underwhleming…

Though dont we all remember RS’s scathing review of Crash?

Remember fans we are always above the pettiness that surrounds us…

“I will go in this way and find my own way out…”

Sean | 2/5/2007, 11:47 am EST

Hey DIPSHIT…those Khaki shorts wearing frat boys and girls put over $60 million dollars into the DMB pockets. Forbes put the band at #10 for lastyears tours. Maybe your father should have worn khakis…than I wouldnt have to read crap like this.

CROWNROCKS | 2/5/2007, 12:01 pm EST

I’m cancelling my subscription – thanks for the article.

MyAntsRMarching | 2/5/2007, 2:02 pm EST

I agree with what Pappy said.
“I take what RS says with a grain of salt. Remember this is the magazine that dissed early Zepplin and Layla.” RS is also off a lot especially after tour season on top grossing bands… congrats RS on pissing your readers off and I can be very glad to say I will not renew.

MyAntsRMarching | 2/5/2007, 2:04 pm EST

Also forgot to add this, but who wrote this… one of the kids for “I’m with Rolling Stone”?

michelle thomas | 2/5/2007, 2:08 pm EST

I’m cancelling my subscription – thanks for the article. way to report an unbiased point of view

CompCarp | 2/5/2007, 2:18 pm EST

I’m not a DMB fan, but I am a House fan. A buddy directed me to this article, and I have to wonder what the writer was thinking.

This should have been a simple article about a musician appearing on a Network show. Maybe throw in some color and background of DMB’s recent tour. But bashing DMB and their FANS?

Again, I’m not a DMB fan, but this is uncalled for in the scope of what this article should have been. It strayed from being news into being a rant for the writer’s personal fog of hatred for all things DMB.

Rolling Stone’s editor should have seen this for what it is, and either given the writer better direction or killed the article.

DreamingTreeML | 2/5/2007, 2:25 pm EST

I’m cancelling my subscription too, then I’m going to use this/current/former issue(s) to line my neighbor’s bird cage. Oh yea, then I’m going to contact MusicToday and ask them to stop offering Rolling Stone magazine to me everytime I buy merchandise.

RS | 2/5/2007, 2:55 pm EST

What did one of those interns from the stupid new reality tv RS show write this? How could a professional writer write something like this? Theres no logical reasoning in this article.

Kevin | 2/5/2007, 3:08 pm EST

What I don’t understand is that it seems as though the article was suppose to be about Dave Matthews appearing on “House”, and what it turned out to be was a complete bashing of a respected band. Yes, I am a fan of Dave Matthews Band as are most of the people that have posted, so of course I’m a little offended. Next time you decide to critique a band’s music you might want to make sure the article is suppose to be about the band’s music not a guest appearance a musician has on a hit T.V. show.

I find it interesting that I recieved a free supscription to Rolling Stone by purchasing over $20 worth of Dave Matthews Band C.D’s. Well now I know not to renew it. Wow you guys are losing a lot of business today aren’t you! Too bad! Looks like I’m going to have more money to go to 4 more DMB concerts this summer. I guess thanks for that!

DMB Fan | 2/5/2007, 3:21 pm EST

Funny, my husband and I are both out of college, were never in frats, generally don’t wear khakis, and are both professionals in our field. And yet we love DMB.

RS is a joke, and has been for a long time.

Cor | 2/5/2007, 3:46 pm EST

Wow. I agree wholeheartedly with all of the above. Those khaki shorts frat boys who are too drunk by the time they get to a show to remember it are what ruin it for true fans. I’m 34 years old and have been following the band since 1993-like most of the people who have replied above, I don’t fit the “stereotype,” nor do any of the 100+ people I camp with every summer at The Gorge. I’m not going to waste my time by canceling my FREE subscription. Instead, I’m going to use it to light my wood stove.

chr35919 | 2/5/2007, 4:03 pm EST

dmb is a kick ass band.

that being said, dave needs to stop acting and write some decent new songs.

Jim | 2/5/2007, 4:04 pm EST

That was a totally unprofessional article and the writer should be fired. Becuase the point of the article is to let the masses know about daves HOUSE guest spot, not to state your biased opinion on the band.

How come DMB is the only band that people make sure they go out of their way to bash? There is no inbetween with dmb. People either like them or completely totally hate them and make sure that you know it. Its down the middle.

I was at a party a few years ago and someone was playing the guitar taking requests, someone yelled “play dave!”. HALF the room was like YES! YAH! YAH PLAY DAVE! The other half was in complete uproar and disgust and just totally laid into dmb about how much they suck and this and that and made sure everyone knew they were above them.

There is no other band i can think of that people go completely out of thier way to hate more than dmb. why is that??

chr35919 | 2/5/2007, 4:05 pm EST

oh and this writer is obviously a khaki wearing, douche bag licking college reject.

JillianK | 2/5/2007, 4:10 pm EST

Not only is this a rediculous, poorly written article, the author has absolutely no background information pertaining to a single “fact” he described. “We’re going to hold off on the negative reviews of Matthews’ performance?”

Sounds like this guy has had his opinion formed from the start, which makes this article a garbage opinion piece.

Rolling Stone is a disgrace to journalism.

Antsman41 | 2/5/2007, 4:17 pm EST

fuk rolling stone… they use dmb to give out subscriptions other wise they would have no readers haha

EHBEO | 2/5/2007, 4:19 pm EST

Wow! Just Wow! An completely infactual piece of #$%* article bashing the greatest band around. I was contemplating renewing my subscription, thanks for making it an easy decision. The sad thing is that I’m canceling a FREE renewal.

Derek Denman | 2/5/2007, 4:24 pm EST

1 ticket to a DMB concert=$50

12 issues of Rolling Stone = alot of toilet paper

Derek Denman | 2/5/2007, 4:25 pm EST

DMB = all good reviews

This article = all bad reviews

Mary | 2/5/2007, 4:32 pm EST

Regardless of whether you like the Dave Matthews Band or not, that was a poorly written article.

You sound like every other anti-dmb whiner complaining about the “jam-band scene” and “frat boys.” Well let me give you a little heads up. DMB is not a jam band. They have solos between the band members, yes but they are not a jam band.

Also, you can’t generalize as a journalist. So you hate Dave Matthews because you hate his “fans” (or at least according to you)? And you insulted his “fans,” many of whom are readers and subscribers of this magazine. What? How does that give you any credibility.

Calm down and stop insulting a whole fanbase you do not even know. How about you write about you critique something substantial– like an actual performance.

Ted | 2/5/2007, 5:21 pm EST

This article was extremely unprofessional, and I will be canceling my subscription to Rolling Stone. I hope that the writer of this will be fired, and such poor quality of writing will not be tolerated any further.

JBiiJB | 2/5/2007, 5:24 pm EST

and this is why I subscribe to Paste Magazine.

Derek Denman | 2/5/2007, 5:30 pm EST

What are some worth while subscriptions to look into? Rolling Stone obviously dosn’t want my buisness.

Frat Boy | 2/5/2007, 5:31 pm EST

Wow.. you just learned quickly how fast word spreads througout the DMB community. And that DMB fans… thousands of them whom subscribe to your publication… take their favorite band pretty seriously.

Oops!!!

Oh and regardless of the viewpoint.. it was a very poorly written article. I am impressed that you get paid to write.

Rolling Stone, give me a call! I can unneccessarly bash performers and bands as well!!

Just cancelled my subscription too and contacted the DMB fansite to remove Rolling Stone as a promotional offer.

Are Frat Boys really the only ones who wear khakis?

Rich Frat boy 2 | 2/5/2007, 5:56 pm EST

A cancelled FREE subscription recieved by spending money at the online DMB store. Bash bands that give your poorly written magazine away for free, thats how to do it!
By the way, why dont you just paste a MTV logo on the front cover already, RS?

Aidan | 2/5/2007, 6:38 pm EST

Well, good job RS
you just lost another costumer
hope this guy gets fired

catdance | 2/5/2007, 6:47 pm EST

I was not amused with this so called writers thoughts on Dave Matthews showing his acting chops on the near future House show. Were did you find this so called writer anyways in high school math class. I think Dave will show this guy what he can do besides sing and play the guitar.

AA | 2/5/2007, 6:52 pm EST

Thanks RS, Just Cancelled!!!

HippieFratBoy | 2/5/2007, 7:32 pm EST

Yes a very well cited and maturely written Rolling Stone article. I swear with this magazine its either their way or the highway. Always good to alienate your readers by stereotyping an entire fanbase.

HST | 2/5/2007, 8:40 pm EST

Sweet Creeping Jesus. Just when I thought you couldn’t get any worse.

You low rent hacks. The slime on your hands is a lot worse than blood. You have much to answer for Jann. See you soon.
Best,
H

Anthony Mogg | 2/5/2007, 8:45 pm EST

I would expect that a magazine such as this, couldn’t raise its standards enough to even try and understand either ‘house’ or ‘dave matthews band’. Maybe you should just keep pushing the MTV shallow and disposable way of life…. Maybe this is why RS have stopped promoting real music…. It appears that if they get it wrong it’s a very big MISTAKE!

peace to all

Chris | 2/5/2007, 9:28 pm EST

Another Rolling Stone subscription canceled. Not because of this article, but it definitely was icing on the cake.

This magazine has become a haven for biased, “whatever sells” articles. I don’t honestly remember the last time I read an article in this magazine that was well written or well informed.

Also, I love the fact that there are still people getting paid to write for a so called music magazine that bring up the stereotype frat boy Dave Matthews Band fan. Are you going to bring up the bus incident on the Chicago river too? Can you write a more cliche article? I am a Dave Matthews Band fan, and I am not in a fraternity nor do I plan on ever being in one.

It’s amazing that a magazine such as Rolling Stone isn’t praising Dave Matthews Band’s every move for writing such unique and powerful music. This is an age where the music takes a back seat to money, and Rolling Stone has become the poster child for that. Praise the big upcoming artists that are here today, gone tomorrow, yet bash the few Hall of Fame bands that still carry out the idea of music first.

Whatever makes a quick buck I suppose. It’s a shame this magazine has sold itself out to the MTV crowd and not the music lover crowd. I’m spending my money on well written, unbiased music magazines from now on, thank you.

ErnieAnn | 2/5/2007, 10:36 pm EST

Wow. My favorite part is the heading at the top that says, “Your non-stop music source.” Source of what? Biased rehashed slams against a respected music group who has graced your cover numerous times? It amazes me how you don’t mind using Dave and the boys to sell some magazines, and then you say something riduculous and speculative about his upcoming role on a television show. Let’s see…. I’ll bet I can predict that the next issue of RS will suck, too! And I’ve been a subscriber for 15 straight years, never wear khaki shorts, teach at a high school, and go to as many DMB concerts as I can. So much for your stereotyped demographics,eh? Perhaps you could find a slightly wider paintbrush to use to describe his fans.

B Gilbert | 2/5/2007, 10:38 pm EST

I’ve never had to cancel a free subscription before, it’s kinda weird.

Proudestmunkee | 2/5/2007, 10:39 pm EST

RS is a prepubescent punk mag piece of garbage. I just ordered a subscription so I could cancel it.

Go back to refridgerator college.

breck | 2/5/2007, 10:46 pm EST

Yeah, I just did the research and it turns out that before Dave Matthews there actually were no Frat Guys. and Dave actually invented kakhi shorts even though he has probably never worn a pair in his life.

pissed off frat boy | 2/5/2007, 10:59 pm EST

actually no one wears khaki’s anymore we wear jeans

i think what is scary here is a magazine of this caliber has someone this ignorant to write a oppinionated, biased preview to a tv show. Who cares if this is about DMB, if you wrote this about anyone short of kevin federline people would be shocked. So i think the conclusion to this is the caliber of your magazine is a joke, a notion backed up by many who take music seriously.

Zorro | 2/5/2007, 11:00 pm EST

wow..reading these comments was a great fun super happy time. Reading that article was just a waste of time in general.

Bothered Reader | 2/5/2007, 11:11 pm EST

A few comments on this article and the heated responses from DMB fans. I understand the desire to shout from the rooftops you’ve cancelled your subscription. However, if you think that these posts or 100 angry fans canceling FREE subscriptions is in anything more than a joke to the RS staff who may be reading this, you are completely delusional. Many of the angry posts hear only feed in to the negative stereotype held not only by this writer, but thousands of people across the country.

While I don’t exactly agree with the tone of these posts I do agree with the viewpoint. This article reads more like an adolescent rant on why the other kids at school are dorks and he’s the only cool one. Rolling Stone has often been hailed as the premier magazine for all things musical. I share my fellow posters disappointment that RS has become a group of people with biased views on what bands and artists are “good”. It seems few of the journalists left on the writing staff even have and understanding of music and can truly appreciate the talent instead of the hype.

All things being equal – the fact that this particular writer dislikes DMB and it’s fan base means very little. Opinions are fine and we all have them. It’s the decision by the editors to run this poorly written article that has so many fans outraged. Take out the personal attack on the fans and on Dave Matthews himself and your 200ish word article turns in to this.

Dave Matthews is guesting on House. I have not seen it, but some say he’s a decent actor. Here are some other musicians who have acted.

Hardly very news worthy or intriguing.

DaveHead41 | 2/5/2007, 11:38 pm EST

I have never liked RS, and now I actually have a reason. I had tried to read it in the past and always found it snobbish about what good music is, not taking into account actual talent and relevance to the world around us. My thoughts were confirmed after reading this article-I am a 27 year old WOMAN (so that eliminates the frat-boy theory) who wouldn’t have joined a sorority if they paid ME, and last time I checked I don’t even own any khakis…You are a complete idiot and should take into account the power of the DMB community before you write a piece of trash like this again. I hope you get fired from RS as a result of all the cancelled subscriptions. DMB even gave away free subscriptions during xmas with merchandise orders-I think I will be cancelling mine before I even get an issue…you just lost a customer for life.

chucktowntouchdown | 2/6/2007, 12:03 am EST

Come on Rolling Stone! This is not journalism. This isn’t anything short of crap. I am a DMB fan, but above all I am a journalist. This really makes me question your staff. And before I read this article, I always thought you had a pretty good writing staff—prestigous actuall–but now that is in major question. I will now read your articles with a whole new eye.

ACDC? come on…

just an observer | 2/6/2007, 2:11 am EST

it seems that whenever someone attacks the Dave Matthews Band, they attack his fans rather than his music. why is this? Is it just that you can’t understand the music? perhaps you are too afraid to enjoy anything without power chords or a techno beat…

EX RS Subscriber | 2/6/2007, 2:25 am EST

My name says it all……you have crappy mag any way that why I wipe my ass with it

Tony | 2/6/2007, 9:50 am EST

I just cancelled by subscription. What a terrible article

Matt D. | 2/6/2007, 9:50 am EST

Cancelled my RS – if they are smart they will fire this jackhole. Opinions are like buttholes – everyone’s got one… this guy’s stinks.

In need of new clothes | 2/6/2007, 9:56 am EST

Funny, I normally wear jeans, a Zep T-shirt, a chain wallet, and Converse All-stars, yet DMB is still my favorite band. I guess I have to start looking for khaki’s and a polo to be a fan. I think a cancelled subscription would help too.

Kevin (Denton, TX) | 2/6/2007, 10:36 am EST

Wow…Isn’t this the same magazine that labeled Dave Matthews as the greatest rock star in the world a couple years back. I’m sure the writer of this article rocks out to the Paris Hilton CD. The sad thing is that people who don’t give a crap about DMB have came on here and responded to the article as bullcrap. Don’t mess with DMB fans. I know people who don’t like DMB and they are astounded that you would write something like this. The writer’s whole college frat boy comparison shows that he knows nothing about the band and writes based on stereotypes instead of pure knowledge. Dude i dare you to write about DMB again and see what kind of response you get. Oh wait you won’t have another article because…YOU’RE FIRED.

Cancel mine too | 2/6/2007, 10:58 am EST

I’m cancelling mine as well. The ego is too thick, and this is a dipshit biased article anyway. Some journalism. Why has RS managed to fuck with my two favorite bands (the other being the Eagles)? Goodbye.

Sam | 2/6/2007, 11:10 am EST

“jam-loving, khaki-short-wearin’ pain-in-the-ass frat boys”
Wow … way to insult not only the frat boys but the other 99.9% of DMB fans.

Mike | 2/6/2007, 2:44 pm EST

Can anyone tell me how to cancel my susbcription? Can I do it online or do I need to call a number or something?

Matt | 2/6/2007, 2:55 pm EST

I am disgusted, yet not surprised. RS needs more well rounded authors who can appreciate good musicians. Sad, sad, sad…but yeah, subscription cancelled. Thanks for that.

shocked | 2/6/2007, 3:26 pm EST

WOW, what an idiot. That’s just insulting. I hope he’s fired. Nevertheless, I’m never buying an issue again.

wow unbelieveable. thought there was this thing called an editor that made sure the writer did his research and had something to say. i thought it was a honor to be a writer for RS, i always thought it was a big deal to make it on the cover of RS. I’ve never accept a free subscript, cuz I can get the issue I want at a used book store for 50cents just to get a picture of dave when there is one. other wise it has nothing I want to know.
hilarous writer…or he doesnt deserve the title! how about, contributor or critic.

L | 2/8/2007, 8:24 pm EST

Well, wasn’t that enlightening? Your biased, uninformed, and poor writing disgusts me. It amazes me that people like you, with your sadly incorrect and incorrect stereotyped writing, can make a living sharing your “gift” with the rest of us. Congrats RS, your excellent journalism, if it ever was, is no longer.

L | 2/8/2007, 8:27 pm EST

I should add that my “incorrect” before stereotyped should not be there. I thought I should clear that up since I scolded our journalistic hero for poor writing.

Gaucho | 2/8/2007, 11:34 pm EST

Argentina stands by Dave Matthews and the band.

Oh yeah.

Y al carajo con vos RS.

Subscription canceled .. Thanks for your bs opinion.. and thanks RS for employing such a moron.. I can’t even say it’s been fun.. You’ve been going down hill for a long time.. You are not much more to me now than the Enquirer..

DMB fan | 2/10/2007, 1:53 pm EST

This guy better get fired, RS lost the entire DMB fan community, anyone realize how many people that really is?

Good job on letting this one get posted, FIRE THIS MAN

Arodoll | 2/11/2007, 2:19 pm EST

Frat boys in khaki shorts??? Sounds like about 75% of RS readers. I guess if talent is undisputed the only thing you can attack is a ridiculous stereotype. With all the crap music featured in RS like Paris Hilton, Justin Timberlake and Ashlee Simpson, this guy has a problem with a group who tours every year and doesn’t jack up ticket prices to their fans.
How many bands have fans that travel across the world and have seen them over 100 times live in concert?
I don’t need an idiot writer to tell me what music I should be listening to. Maybe you should write less and listen more.
Your opinion reminds me how truly bad rolling stone has become.
Free subscription cancelled.

K dub | 2/12/2007, 1:23 am EST

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion but this guy needs to get the facts straight.

ThisGuyisStupida | 2/13/2007, 12:10 am EST

This guy needs to realize that real music is not what trl tells us to listen to or whoever looks best in a bikini….and maybe he should get his facts straight and p.s. i thought good journalists had the ability to write with an unbias opinion.

HAHAHA | 2/13/2007, 8:29 am EST

the responses are great keep it up guys

CompCarp | 2/13/2007, 8:34 am EST

Has this writer been fired yet?

Ricky | 2/14/2007, 1:17 am EST

typical, its easy to tslk, why dont you get up on stage and lets see how you compare to DMB
if you lose then you can quit

Doug | 2/14/2007, 7:33 pm EST

I consider myself a huge DMB fan, but just because someone bashes DMB doesn’t mean I’m gonna go get my panties in a twist. Yes I think the guy is an idiot, but if he doesn’t like DMB then fine with me, he doesn’t have to.

He’s just one (idiot of a) man. I’m just gonna brush it off and wait for my copy of the new Live Trax I just pre-ordered. (Ya check the DMB website to get yours!)

But I mean I’m not expecting too much from Dave as an actor. Don’t get me wrong he’s an AMAZING musician, along with every other person in his band, but if you have ever seen “Because of Winn Dixie” (or whatever it’s called/spelled) I think that strictly looking at acting Dave wasn’t that stellar. In fact I think it’s pretty funny.

dmbkc | 2/14/2007, 10:53 pm EST

Everyone has the right to their own opinion. In this case your opinion sucks.

Go back to writing in bathroom stalls, bro!

Typical... | 2/16/2007, 3:34 am EST

I wish I could say that I’m surprised about this article, but I’m really not. Rolling Stone is bullshit and has been for a while. This is supposed to be a music-geared magazine, but I read more about politics here then I see on CNN. I mean, are you kidding me? I hope everyone here realizes that this is why Rolling Stone DOES exist, because it pisses people off. The whole music world is going in the shitter, at least the side that people see. The Dixie Chicks!??? Are you SERIOUS!? Did you hear John Mayer’s cd? People need to start realizing that real music the way it was meant to be is coming from bands like Widespread Panic, Umphrey’s McGee, DMB, and other bands that actually tour and have a working relationship with their fans…and a good one at that. Fuck this magazine.

sweet | 2/20/2007, 8:36 pm EST

dude. I have been a DMB fan since before the beginning when I recieved a tape of a fraternity house concert. And I gotta say, all these comments (with the exception of the well meaning yet completely moronic) make me proud to part of the worlds greatest fan base (besides St. Louis Cardinals fans). But hey, this writer doesnt suck. He is a puppet who is being strung along just like the millions of people who agree that the dixie chixs deserved best album…My god. Like the other guy said, DID YOU HEAR JOHN MAYERS ALBUM!!! That man can play dude.

Rob S | 2/21/2007, 1:26 pm EST

If I knew how to cancel my subscription I would do it.

Observer | 3/9/2007, 11:17 pm EST

This guy clearly has a thing against DMB. Anyone who truley listens to the span of music this band plays is utterly ridiculous to say they are anything but absolutely ASTONISHING

Carney | 3/26/2007, 2:40 pm EST

I am a frat boy and a dmb fan (16 shows, 4 states, and soon to be 2 countries… pretty decent record, but by no means whatsoever the most hardcore)… pretty much it blows my mind how close-minded some people can be. Dave’s performance was pretty good, however the piano double kinda annoyed me, but then again he has butch taylor to take care of the keys… so i’ll give it to him.
