Rock & Roll Hall of Fame: Class of ‘07

1/8/07, 11:25 am EST

This year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been announced and what a group it is: Patti Smith, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, R.E.M, the Ronettes and Van Halen (including both Diamond Dave and Sammy Hagar). All we can say is . . . oy. Considering the historical beef amongst the various members of VH, we think the producers ought to abandon the romantic notion of an all-member rendition of “Jump” and go straight for a steel-cage fight. It’ll be the best of both worlds — classic rock nostalgia meets macho WWE-style posturing and (hopefully) some blood. Reunions can be so touching, especially when the touching involves blunt trauma.

The potential smackdown is scheduled for March 12th at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City, and we are S-T-O-K-E-D. With all the warring versions of VH on display, we were kind of wondering which lineup you think is the true Hall of Fame unit. Let us know.

Rock and Roll?? | 4/27/2009, 1:10 am EST

I find it incredible that The Cure have not been inducted as of yet.

They not only have been making music for nearly thirty years, they are STILL selling out large venues when they tour!

They are also one of the bands most cited by other bands as being an influence on them(the new bands).

Certainly seems like more than enough to warrant induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!

TLM1762 | 8/17/2008, 5:52 pm EST

I’m very glad to see Van Halen at their post. Would like to see alot more “rockers” in the hall. After all it’s what the name implies. Now would like to see other notables there such as Alice Cooper & the late Jim Croce.

How About Queen ?

woodman | 2/5/2008, 10:46 am EST

If Grandmaster Flash and other hip-hop er, I mean rap er, I mean urban music acts get in, then I can’t wait for the day when Metallica and Kiss receive their BET lifetime achievment awards. Bring your guns boys!!!!!!

Roy | 1/5/2008, 7:57 am EST

I believe that all the charting musicians from the 1950s and early 1960s should be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, no matter who they are or how good they were or how many hits they had. They should all be inducted just because they were a part of the foundation of Rock & Roll.

INDUCT NOW!!

The Big Bopper
Chubby Checker
Harry Belafonte
The Kingston Trio
Peter, Paul & Mary
Joan Baez
Judy Collins
Jan and Dean
The Monkees

2008 DEPECHE MODE HALL OF FAMERS!!!!

Stuart R. Downey | 9/30/2007, 10:29 pm EST

How can you possibly once again leave off one of the most influential, prolific, and talented musicians rock has ever been privileged enough to have seen? Of course, I am talking about none other than the one and only, LEON RUSSELL. Is this someones idea of a sick joke? How can the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ever be taken seriously when it snubs Leon?

grjonca | 9/28/2007, 9:47 pm EST

where is alice cooper? are you kidding me? he is left off again?

William | 6/19/2007, 12:51 am EST

Why aren’t THE MIRACLES in the RRHOF? They were the beginning of the ENTIRE MOTOWN PHENOMONON !!! They were the FIRST Motown group, had MOTOWN’S first million seller, over 50 chart hits, and are BY FAR the label’s most influential act, their songs having covered by everyone from THE BEATLES,to the STONES,MICHAEL JACKSON,THE WHO,KIM CARNES ,ARETHA FRANKLIN,JOHNNY RIVERS and literally DOZENS of other artists (see “The Miracles” in Wikipedia). How can Jann Wenner put them in his listing of “THE IMMORTALS: THE 50 GREATEST ARTISTS OF ALL TIME,and yet, at the same time, exclude them from ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME INDUCTION? Does that make sense to you? Most of the songs credited to their lead singer , SMOKEY ROBINSON,(who was inducted alone) were actually GROUP compositions ! So, why haven’t they all been inducted ? On the other hand, other Motown groups ,(SUPREMES, TEMPTATIONS, VANDELLAS,ETC), not to mention many other non- Motown artists, who NEVER WROTE A SINGLE LYRIC OF MUSIC,are inducted year after year. Not to mention artists that have had NOWHERE NEAR THE NUMBER OF HITS!!! And now RAP and HIP-HOP ARTISTS, many of which WEREN’T EVEN BORN when The Miracles’ hits ruled the airwaves (2007 is the 50th anniversary of The Miracles’ recording debut). It is a travesty that the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME has inducted EVERY MAJOR MOTOWN GROUP except the ONE MOTOWN GROUP THAT STARTED IT ALL !!!

Four Seasons Fan | 1/22/2007, 11:31 pm EST

Despite his extensive contributions to The Four Seasons, Joe Long remains the only member of the group’s “definitive line up” not inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Martin | 1/21/2007, 3:50 am EST

Look just because your not rock 7 roll it doesnt mean you dont deserve to be there. heaps of artist have been put in the rock hall 7 they aint rock.

RushFan | 1/20/2007, 4:08 pm EST

As long as Jan Wenner is in charge of Rolling Stone, and therefore in charge of the RRHOF, Rush will never see entry. He hates all things ProgRock and will not allow a band such as Rush in.

Mind you: Rush has had the same lineup for 30+ years, has 23 gold records and 14 platinum (3 multi-platinum) records, making them one of the best-selling rock bands in history, and are top 5 for the most consecutive gold and platinum albums by a rock band. Less we forget the bands influenced by them…but again, as long as Wenner is in charge, there’s no chance.

Zack | 1/15/2007, 1:14 pm EST

I agree with Ke Vail Jr. way down at the bottom…ish. Todd Rundgren truly deserves his place in the hall. He was a pop music visionary. Yes I realzie pop dpes not = rock and roll. But he put outa lot of records that would be brilliant by todays rock standards still. (and I know who he is, and I’m only 16) and also, they’ve avoided it long enough, I really think Alice Cooper deserves a place too. WHile some people can argue hes all show, hes surely not. He produces, (adn still to this day) great records with a very unique quality and subject matter, he deserves a huge chance. Also I cannot believe the stooges were left out, they were a massive predecessor to punk rock. Finally, other bands who deserve a chance as well, Kiss, definitely, Cheap Trick and most definitely Rush.

hey ishmael; there are some in this world who actually benefit from racial tensions, so don’t help them out…united we stand ~ divided we fall…

charliemapleton | 1/10/2007, 12:50 pm EST

That’s right, spread the gospel Anonymous! How’s that for hip hop history, racist tricks(y’all know who you are)?

Ishmael | 1/9/2007, 5:29 pm EST

Sorry, that last post was me.

Anonymous | 1/9/2007, 5:28 pm EST

So, let me get this straight, Del Mcronde, hip-hop artists should only be allowed entry into your whites-only music club if they’re funny shuckin’ & jivin’ negros, but not if they’re intelligent black men and women with something to say? Is this 2007 or 1957? Have you even heard Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five before? (And this is also adressed to Hallze, Ken Vail Jr., and YOU killed rock music). I have listened to Grand Master Flash & the Furious Five for years, and their music has nothing to do with “I-SHOOT-MY-MOMS SLAP-THEM-HOES-UP LOOK-AT-MY-PRETTY-SHOES” or “smok(ing) blunts and put(ting) big stupid rims on their cars” (or malt liquor or drive-bys or any other racist stereotype you can add to the list). Their music was actually a reaction against that kind of mentality. But you wouldn’t know that, because you’ve obviously never heard their music. Just because you’ve heard the kind of crap like 50 Cent that the record industry shoves down your throat, that doesn’t mean that you know the first thing about rap/hip-hop as a whole. Could you tell the difference between N.W.A. and Public Enemy? Didn’t think so. “Monkey music?” You know, that’s the same kind of outlandishly racist comment that people used 50 years ago to describe your beloved rock and roll, until groundbreaking groups like Led Zeppelin stole riffs (a lot like sampling, when you think about it) from black blues musicians and called it their own. I agree that a lot of good bands have been left out (basically almost all prog, metal and glam bands; the Hall’s about as narrow minded as you, apparently), but I have a hard time arguing with anyone who got in this year. In the meantime, why don’t you go post on some Aryan Nation or KKK blog and quit making us read all of your B.S.?

Daz the Manc | 1/9/2007, 4:55 pm EST

Van Halen? I think you need to listen to proper music by iconic artists not some hair metal one hit wonders.I am not to sure who has already been inducted into the American hof but if its like the Uk hof then the rubbish gets in and the real quality has to wait. The artist that deserve hof are in my opinion are
Joy Division/New order
Depeche Mode
The clash
The Jam
hendrix
The Smiths
Led Zep
Pixies
Public Enemy
The Buzzcocks
The Cure
The Beach Boys
The Kinks

Tommy Lee & Nikki Sixx's LoVeR | 1/9/2007, 3:44 pm EST

RAP BLOWS! It’s short for CRAP! The only cool thing about RAP is The Fatboys and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Because they were funny atleast!

Aries73 | 1/9/2007, 1:59 pm EST

Sounds like a lot of Aryan Nation wannabe’s are upset that their chokehold on music culture has been slipping for the last 20 years.

I like rock as much as anyone who grew up in the 80’s, but my generation was exposed to far more than that and forced the music industry to acknowledge other genres. I’d have it no other way.

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five being inducted in the Hall of Fame was long overdue as they were one of the pioneers of hip-hop.

Whether any of you music segregationists like it or not, the Hall will not cater exclusively to white suburbanites like you. To do so at all would be a distortion of music history.

Axl Van Sixx | 1/9/2007, 1:55 pm EST

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame blows chunks. Because Jan Wenner owns a big part of it, the inductees you see there will be exactly the same as Rolling Stone’s “50 Greatest Artists EVER!” or “500 Greatest Albums of ALL TIME!” Van Halen should have been in there long ago, but obviously you’d have a hard time convincing the metal-hating critics that make up HOF voters. I still see no Judas Priest or Iron Maiden there and don’t expect to anytime soon, even though they’re two of the most influential bands of the past 30 years.

Blues, rock, reggae, and rap are still universal genres(to this day),but I just needed to tell the real deal.Sorry if I offended any of y’all peoples.

charliemapleton | 1/9/2007, 12:18 pm EST

Without country/folk and blues/reggae there would be no rock or rap?!?!Angel please! For one thing, rock and rap did not stem from country and folk.Second of all, there was an original, powerful evolution that started with blues, rock, reggae and then rap…AKA BLACK MUSIC(since you want to play the race card)! You don’t have to pay me for getting your facts straight mainman(smirks).

YOU killed rock music | 1/9/2007, 12:08 pm EST

To the retarded idiot that said “f$#% genres”… maybe you should take a look at the title… ROCK AND ROLL hall of fame…

not “SHIT-SOUNDING, I-OVERUSE-ELECTRONICS-IN-MY-MU SIC, I-SHOOT-MY-MOMS SLAP-THEM-HOES-UP LOOK-AT-MY-PRETTY-SHOES RAP/HIP HOP MONKEY-MUSIC hall of fame…

GRAND MASTER FLASH,,.,, GET OUT.

Has any of the recruiters for this hall of fame ever seen a live rap show? Its a bunch of people jumping around out of sync making noises that dont jell because they have no clue how to perform, mainly because they have producers mix and make electronic beats and mess with their voices while they sit back and smoke blunts and put big stupid rims on their cars.

MOST OF ALL… ITS NOT ROCK AND ROLL

P.S. U2 BLOWS, NICE J-LO GLASSES BONO

charliemapleton | 1/9/2007, 12:03 pm EST

For the record:

“1984″,”5150″,and “For Unlawful Canal Knowledge”

Classics!

YOU killed rock music | 1/9/2007, 11:46 am EST

Wow… quite the crack squad we got here this year. What a meaningless honor this hall of fame has become. Grandmaster Flash??? Man you can really tell they’re struggling to fill their ethnical quota. Van Halen is alright, but I can think of about 247 other bands that are more deserving. I’m depressed, guess its time to go fire up some Zeppelin LP’s to remind me what real hall-of-famers sound like.

WHY IS EVERYONE KILLING ROCK AND ROLL. STOP IT FOR CHRIST’S SAKE.

Hank SF | 1/9/2007, 10:26 am EST

ALL HAIL PATTI SMITH!!

Even if she had recorded nothing else, the 1975 album “Horses” alone would have earned her this spot in the Hall. Saw her at the Fillmore in San Francisco in 2005 - she is still one of the most powerful and most influential rock artists around!

Next year: The New York Dolls!

ken vail jr. | 1/9/2007, 10:19 am EST

I WILL SAY THIS MUCH….it is a diverse group this year…but it’s insulting to certain bands that have had long, seminal careers….the stooges should certainly be in-considering they have a new album out this year it would be very fitting…but i guess we gotta wait till next year.

STRATCAT | 1/9/2007, 9:34 am EST

Let’s see…they voted for Van Halen yet again skipped over the godfathers of punk The Stooges???!!!
This Hall of fame is a pile of doo
doo and to quote Tony Montana as a loving message to the hall:
“You people are a bunch of cockaroches!!!!”
Cheers!
Str atcat

Grant Lee Huffalump | 1/9/2007, 9:29 am EST

Since they are inducting Grandmaster Flash in the R&R HOF, can Aerosmith and Anthrax go into the Rap/Hip-Hop HOF?

CORNER DESK | 1/9/2007, 9:20 am EST

WHY DOES IT TAKE ROCK BANDS LIKE AEROSMITH,QUEEN, AND VH TWO OR THREE SHOTS TO GET IN THE HALL.WHEN THE PRETENDERS AND OTHER NOVELTY BANDS GO IN THE FIRST TIME OUT. WERE THESE BANDS TOO SUCCESSFUL. BETWEEN AREOSMITH, QUEEN AND VH WHAT DID THEY SELL 200 MILLION RECORDS, AND HELPED DEFINE LIVE MUSIC. LETS REMEMBER IT’S THE ROCK HALL OF FAME, NOT JUST THE HALL FOR OBSCURE BANDS THAT THE CRITICS LIKE.

nurserock1 | 1/9/2007, 12:46 am EST

After thinking about it..
The sad reality is that Sammy may be the only VH lead singer that can still sing/front a major band….Cherone notwithstanding.
Whatever we may think, say, or debate regarding Sammy’s relevance to VH’s greatness….by all accounts Dave’s voice is gone, his hair is gone, and his sense of coolness was lost about 1987….
In short, his performance is likely to be as embarassing as his VMA appearance with the band….downright cringeworthy.

matt | 1/9/2007, 12:18 am EST

That is a great class of musicians, and all of them are good choices. Don’t all the artists perform together at the end of the show? It’s going to be pretty far out seeing R.E.M, Van Halen and Grand Master Flash all on the same stage together.

dersh | 1/8/2007, 11:56 pm EST

im soooo happy R.E.M. was inducted. and van halen too

but i can wait till next year when metallica is eligible

or 2014 when nirvana is eligible

what about iron maiden… they should get inducted soon

mohr5150 | 1/8/2007, 11:45 pm EST

What a great day to be a VH fan!! How in the hell they’re going to pull this off with the band split as badly as they are is beyond my understanding. I’m guessing a two-part show, with the first having Eddie, Alex, Dave, and Wolfgang playing an oldie, then bringing out Sammy and Mike to play some new; that is, if Sammy and Mike show up. Anyone who says they weren’t infuential in rock and roll completely missed the 80’s rock scene. Every guitarist in an 80’s hard rock band imulated Eddie and the sound of VH. Congratulations, guys. Now try to work something out so you can all be there to enjoy the night.
As for a favorite? That’s a really tough question. I have to lean just a bit to Sammy just because I grew up more with him, but I love the old stuff. It depends on the day and the mood, but any VH song gets me pumped!!

likroper.com | 1/8/2007, 11:29 pm EST

a) since ted templeman and don landee based the first VH record around the ultimate party-rockin’ ‘montrose’ record they both had a hand in producing, and b) since sammy hagar was once considered to be VH’s singer for a minute right before VH ‘got big’, and c) since sammy eventually did later become the singer of VH for a string of great recordings and kick-ass concert tours, and d) since sammy doesn’t lose his voice like dave used to all the time, and e) since the name ’sammy hagar’ is so fuckin’ cool, sammy should be included as well as dave at the RNR hall of fame ceremony…

but as far as the actual VH touring band goes, i think it is probably dave’s turn to give it a go once again…

Bryan G | 1/8/2007, 11:20 pm EST

How is Def Leppard not in? It’s been 25 years since their first album, they are so much more talented and influential than Van Halen, and — I think this is important — they are still a viable band. I love VH, but they haven’t mattered for a decade.

Tod | 1/8/2007, 10:45 pm EST

Sammy Hagar deserves to be in the R&RHoF only as much as Journey does . . . he’s owes Dave big time for this

cathy p. | 1/8/2007, 10:41 pm EST

2009 class:

Bread
Bay City Rollers
Shaun Cassidy
The Partridge Family (with the original drummer ONLY)
The Osmonds
The DeFranco Family-(ONLY with Tony Defranco)
Tony Orlando and Dawn
Haicut 100
Rick Springfield

The Dynamic Rob | 1/8/2007, 10:34 pm EST

Well, well. Sammy Hagar hopes there will be civility at the induction ceremony, and that Eddie and Alex will take the high road. But David Lee Roth could very well pull another self-promoting stunt to screw the whole thing up and attempt to prop up his current horrific state of affairs. That would be his solo career. The last I heard of Roth was at a fair down here in Mobile. He has no voice left. Do we really have to watch Elvis Lee Roth bring down an otherwise great ceremony? I mean, Hagar’s pushin 60 years old and at least he can still sing…..maybe Roth can twirl something onstage instead while Hagar sings……
As for the progressive rock bands who haven’t got in - only Yes and Rush belong. They have continued uninterrupted for over thirty years, and have far more memorable songs than say, “Invsible Touch.” Right, Phil Collins/Genesis????

KEM | 1/8/2007, 10:13 pm EST

so…the greatest american rock band ever will be inducted into r&r hof…the anguish of aprica, bingo hand job, twisted kites…sorry…they sometimes go by REM. Berry, Buck, Mills, Stipe…thank you. To all of the DIY bands past present future…it is possible. Vision is everything. Should also recognize Bertis Downs.

Bill C. | 1/8/2007, 10:00 pm EST

Congratulations to all, from a very big R.E.M. fan! I am certain Bill Berry will play with them, he has at other functions recently. I hope the rest of their current band plays too, becuase they are still a very good live band. Who will induct them - Bono, Patty Smith? Should be fun, wish I could be there…

Hello Arthur Corningwaddle?

I hope you really aren’t as stupid as that name - and that you are actually kidding with your comments.

“Thank God, REM ‘finally got in”?

REM got in on their FIRST year of eligibility. There is no ‘finally’ about it.

Cheap Trick? Does NOT belong.

Stooges - Finalist for a few years. An inevitability.Deserve to be inducted and will be.

Kiss - See Cheap Trick.

Public Enemy - Not eligible until 2012.

Pixies - Not eligible until 2012.

I seriously hope you’re pulling our legs with some of your suggestions and comments.

25 years AFTER their debut recording - is the rule.

Just in case you were really that stupid.

For those of you complaining about the lack of such bands as the Stooges/Alice Cooper/etc., think of it this way. This same thing inevitably happens every 2 or 3 years when a sports HOF elects someone who everyone has beat the drum about. The problem here is that the Rock Hall is being dominated by a higher elite that wish not to see acts like these go in… just yet. The simple fact is that under the guidelines for the Hall we are leaving behind the baby-boom dominated era of rock and moving into the area occupied by what was once known(sadly) as Generation X. Both Def Leppard and Motley Crue are also eligible for induction if you go by the 25 year standard, but these bands are the 180 degree opposite of what the Rock Hall really wants to enshrine. Despite the fact that you & I know VH should be there the idea of it actually probably bothers some of the voters. VH is the best choice option they have here. These other bands may be being held back on purposeas to have a sort of comfort zone of nominees to elect in later years (just imagine the reaction of the voters to some of the acts that are coming up that really do deserve enshrinement).

rick james | 1/8/2007, 7:30 pm EST

When will Fugazi be eligable?

Arthur Corningwaddle | 1/8/2007, 7:28 pm EST

Thank God R.E.M finally got in, but where is Cheap Trick?!?!?! Iggy Pop and the Stooges?!?!?!KISS?!?! Public Enemy!?!?! The Pixies(they might be in, I’m not sure)?!?!?!? Come on Cleveland, get these guys in!

mk | 1/8/2007, 7:06 pm EST

what about the fact that sammy hagar sucks? i feel like that should be part of the consideration here.

St. Robinson | 1/8/2007, 6:57 pm EST

Even though they should get in, for R.E.M. to get it in their first year of eligibility, while Sabbath had to wait nearly ten years and other great bands (we’ve all heard The Stooges mentioned here) still have not….I mean, come on. Glad R.E.M. got in though, they do deserve it.

cterryr2 | 1/8/2007, 6:43 pm EST

RUSH - Until then, I spit on this thing. Picking favorites is stupid anyway. Oh, my band is better than yours..how childish. RRHAF is commercial crap! Even with RUSH I would spit on it. Free our freedom!

Go VH!!!!! We miss Eddie/DLR!

James | 1/8/2007, 6:39 pm EST

I think the Sex Pistols had it right. I think Ozzy had it right for a long time. I’m personally disgusted with the fact that Grandmaster Flash is getting in the ROCK N ROLL Hall of Fame. This isn’t the POP Hall of Fame or the RAP Hall of Fame, I was able to accept the fact that Michael Jackson was inducted. He worked with Rock N Roll (specifically Eddie Van Halen). But GMF shouldn’t be in. If this leads to Eminem being inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, I may never pop culture the same way again. And for the record since I’m on my soapbox, if anyone thinks that GMF deserves to be in, then you are nothing more than an ignorant spoon-fed sheep that doesn’t know shit about rock n roll.

The Hall of Fame is officially a joke. And I agree, The Stooges need to be in. Where’s Alice Cooper? How about KISS? There are more acts that changed the face of rock n roll that deserve to be in the Hall of Fame but aren’t. Truth be told, the only way I’ll watch the HOF ceremony this year is if David Lee Roth performs with Van Halen. I mean c’mon, when else are you going to see a Jerry Springer styled fight on VH1?

nurserock1 | 1/8/2007, 6:19 pm EST

It doesn’t matter the sales peak of your career, creative peak…etc..
You are not eligible for entry into the R/R HOF until your first released recording is 25 years old. Therefore, Sammy SHOULD have to wait until 2010, the 25th anniversary of 5150. I am aware that the rule currently states that the inductees include whatever group members the hall wishes to invite. Yes, they could technically invite Cherone. This becomes such a domestic mess in the next few years (bands like VH, Guns N Roses..etc) so ugly that some precedent must be set. Bad Blood is too thick in some of these situations. It will wind up ruining the “music”. By separating the eras they can have induction ceremonies that celebrate these bands without people disgracing the honor by refusing to show up or demonstrating other inappropriate ego-triplike behaviors. This way the fans don’t get screwed out of seeing a cool reunion performance…and the artist gets recognized appropriately as he or she deserves.

Uh-huh | 1/8/2007, 5:59 pm EST

Jason,

I think Madonna will qualify in 2008, but I doubt she will be nominated. Her music is viewed as style over substance (as if you could divorce the two) and thus “not as real” as the oeuvre of someone like Patti Smith. This is unfortunate, for I like both Patti and Madonna and regard both their careers with high esteem.

M. Komar | 1/8/2007, 5:53 pm EST

Where are the Stooges?
That’s my question. They managed to induct the Velvet Underground in the 90’s and now Patti Smith is in, artists who were never really successful in their own time, but made great records.
The Stooges, their first record came out nearly 40 years ago, give ‘em a break.
Let’s hope that’s next year they get inducted for the hard work they did.

lovedog | 1/8/2007, 5:36 pm EST

what!!where’s alice cooper???

NeverNever Girl | 1/8/2007, 5:35 pm EST

Holy cow! I should’ve known that making any sort of comment about Van Halen that wasn’t totally positive would get me into trouble. . .Guys, I LOVE Van Halen! I fully recognize that Eddie Van Halen is certainly one of the greatest guitar players in rock history! I’m just saying: explain to me how Van Halen were *original*. I think the Hall should honor *artistic* impact before *cultural* impact.

And it’s not nice to call me a dumbass. That hurt my feelings. I would cry if I weren’t at work.

lovedog | 1/8/2007, 5:34 pm EST

Are you tellin me alice cooper is not in the hall of fame?.You know he went the extra mile to put on a rock and roll show..the people running this are losing cred…

Aaron | 1/8/2007, 5:22 pm EST

The Stooges
The End

Bone | 1/8/2007, 5:20 pm EST

VH was a no brainer. Gods of the Arena Rock World. It got no better than DLR VH! When will we see some more Prog Rock bands start to get some nods?
Hasn’t YES been making music for 35 + years?

duckdealer | 1/8/2007, 4:57 pm EST

The Sex Pistols were right.

Angel | 1/8/2007, 4:56 pm EST

Just a question: why is everyone flipping out about hip-hop or funk being in the rock & roll hall of fame? Are we so stuck on bullshit genre-defining that we can’t see that every form of music we listen to today basically comes from TWO sources: country/folk, and blues/reggae. Without those, there is no rock, or rap, or whatever crap genre you wanna hype on. Get your facts straight, assholes. Barring hip-hop or rap from the HOF is a little too close to WHITES ONLY signs, if you ask me. Fuck your genres.

Satania | 1/8/2007, 4:52 pm EST

As long as the Stooges and Alice Cooper are left out, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a fucking joke. R.E.M.? Van Halen? Eat my shit.

Dave | 1/8/2007, 4:49 pm EST

Well let’s see….you already had Disco with the Stones and the Bee Gees, why not Rap?

And as far as VH, a stunt guitarist fronted by either a guy that sounded like a singing comedian or a guy who’s every song sounded like a beer commercial.

Bayliss | 1/8/2007, 4:40 pm EST

VH needs to be in the Hall. They sold too many records, packed arenas
all over the world, got everyone laid in the early 80’s and the songs have stood the test of time.
Congrats! now pull your heads out of your fat asses and re-invent rock.

ken vail jr. | 1/8/2007, 4:31 pm EST

Todd Rundgren should be inducted too, even if only as a producer-though a lot of you kids may not know who he is.

Richard | 1/8/2007, 4:30 pm EST

It doesn’t matter if we agree with the way the Rock Hall inducts a band or whether ot not you prefer Hagar over Roth or even Cherone over both.

There’s nothing you can do about ANY of it - so why bitch?

Enjoy the circus or just play the old records if you choose not to.

Life goes on.

Get over it.

ken vail jr. | 1/8/2007, 4:25 pm EST

I THINK VAN HALEN DESERVE TO BE IN THE HALL-THEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST ENTERTAINING BANDS EVER…I SAW THEM A FEW YEARS AGO W/ HAGAR AND I LOVED IT-IT WAS ONE OF THE 10 BEST SHOWS I EVER SAW EASILY.

mbuttich77 | 1/8/2007, 4:24 pm EST

I think there should be two inductions one for Van Halen with David Lee Roth and one for Van Hagar. Everyone on here bitching that Hagar had more #1 singles or albums with Van Halen must realize if it werent for Diamond Dave Sammy Hagar would still be driving 55. I personally wouldnt invite Cherone either. And i dont wanna hear that crap about when the Yardbirds got in Paige, Beck and Clapton were there. Do you realize the power of those names Paige, Beck and Clapton. You dont even need to mention their first names. If someone said the word Cherone and RocknRoll and youd get people asking if it was that song from “The Knack”

Rowr | 1/8/2007, 4:20 pm EST

Grant Lee,

Whether yr being serious or not, yr obviously retarded. Are you sure you’re allowed to be on the computer without parental supervision?

ken vail jr. | 1/8/2007, 4:06 pm EST

grandmaster flash is a horrible fucking choice, when truly amazing and legendary bands like KISS, CHEAP TRICK, RUSH, BLUE OYSTER CULT AND THE JAM aren’t in there….it’s not that they aren’t influencial or whatever, but it really makes no sense to me. CHEAP TRICK are the greatest live band I have ever seen and i hope they get their due respect before they retire….

Jason | 1/8/2007, 3:46 pm EST

We can toss the Ronettes and put the Stooges in…maybe next year. I like the Sammy days better than the DLR version of Halen. I bet REM plays with Bill Berry. They are all still very friendly.

Grant Lee Huffalump | 1/8/2007, 3:46 pm EST

Asking for it…

YOU were the one saying they were worth a spit, and that they don’t take themselves seriously. But you are WRONG. THEY DO TAKE THEMSELVES WAAAAY TOO SERIOUSLY.

NO they don’t belong in the HOF.

And my post was CLEARLY sarcastic.

Let me post again, but s-l-o-w-l-y so everyone can understand.

Eddie believes the hype. He thinks VH is the best band ever, and he is the end-all, be-all guitar player. Lead singers be damned.

Hallzee | 1/8/2007, 3:32 pm EST

Grandmaster Flash?

I thought it was the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?

JJJ | 1/8/2007, 3:27 pm EST

Sammy sucks. Diamond Dave rules!!

More interesting, will Bill Berry play with R.E.M.?

King Bee | 1/8/2007, 3:08 pm EST

Diamond Dave needs to thank Jim Dandy. Without Jim Dandy, there’d be no Van Halen.

jill hives | 1/8/2007, 3:05 pm EST

induction = old(uncool)/old

john | 1/8/2007, 2:59 pm EST

haha you think this is bad? wait until 2012 when the hall has to sort out the mess that is Guns N Roses…..until then however. Van Halen was at its best with DLR…i mean i guess we all enjoyed the power ballad years of Hagar, but the majority of their best songs were with DLR…

boo boo | 1/8/2007, 2:58 pm EST

dude cherone is probably blowing goats by now!

Del Mcronde | 1/8/2007, 2:57 pm EST

Even though IMO Hagar wasn’t the frontman Roth was, and Van-Halen had better material with Roth. Hagar definitely deserves to be inducted as well!! Without any doubt at all! Hagar was the best replacement possible!

Richard | 1/8/2007, 2:53 pm EST

The artist is inducted on the basis of their recording debut as a band.

The band “Van Halen” debuted in 1978 and continued recording for Warner Bros until 2004.

During that span, VH had three singers (Roth, Hagar, Cherone). Technically, Cherone could show up and ask for an award, but obviously he won’t and the Hall probably didn’t include him.

EX: Fleetwood Mac was inducted in 1998.

If the Hall was strictly considering the “Rumours”lineup for induction, they wouldn’t have been eligible until 2000.

The Hall was recognizing that Fleetwood Mac actually debuted in 1967, with a self titled album by the band fronted by Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. Thus, making the band Hall eligible since 1992.

The BAND Fleetwood Mac was being inducted for their ENTIRE CAREER - not just one specific period.

Technically, the Hall could induct Cherone if they choose. But it’s at their discretion as to who they officially invite and recognize.

Black Sabbath was inducted last year, but only w. Ozzy and not the other dozen singers they had afterward. I believe Dio was invited, but he declined. Cherone (having made even less of an impact than Dio)likely would pass as well.

Hope this clears up some confusion.

C'mon now....... | 1/8/2007, 2:41 pm EST

Eddie is the cat’s meow….. and that band makes you want to smile—- fighting or not— the tunes are a triumphantly good time….

Richard | 1/8/2007, 2:38 pm EST

Sean - Because Sammy Hagar was THEIR SINGER!!!! He wasn’t up their playing the triangle for pete’s sake!

He was in the band LONGER than David Lee Roth was!!! Their success level (no.1 records, records sold, tours) was HIGHER with Hagar than DLR.

Yes, he wasn’t the original singer - but his contribution (like it or not) was a HUGE part of what kept Van Halen ticking since 1984.

There are PLENTY of cases where former singers or former members ALL get inducted to the Hall of Fame.

Mick Taylor, Ron Wood, and Brian Jones ALL got inducted with the Stones.

Brian Johnson AND Bon Scott got in w. AC/DC.

Clapton, Page AND Beck all got in together with the Yardbirds - and yet, they were NOT al in the band at the same time.

Peter Green was inducted w. Fleetwood Mac - NOT just the “Rumours” lineup of the band.

There are more examples obviously, but Hagar being a part of the induction should come as no surprise.

He earned it and I’m happy to see Van Halen as a whole, be inducted into the HOF.

Induction night should be one helluvanight.

sean | 1/8/2007, 2:25 pm EST

i don’t get the sammy hagar in the hall thing either, becoz of the 25 year rule for all inductees…and as i remember, when bruce springsteen went in, the e street band didn’t, unless i remember incorrectly…how did sammy get included?

Del Mcronde | 1/8/2007, 2:24 pm EST

Van Halen’s Cool material ratio per singer!

Diamond Dave-69%
Sammy Hagar-23%
Gary Cherone-Negative 8%

nurserock1 | 1/8/2007, 2:23 pm EST

I’m with the notion that Sammy isn’t eligible until 2010….when 5150 turns 25 years old as a recording…after all they should have pulled a RATM/Audioslave and changed their name at that point. As for anyone that says VH with Dave is a joke……maybe they’re a punchline now due to their behavior…but take away the behavior and WHAT A BAND

Ouroboros | 1/8/2007, 2:20 pm EST

OBVIOUSLY the classic: Eddie, Dave, Alex and Michael. Even though it may no longer exist and possibly never will…

jungleland | 1/8/2007, 2:16 pm EST

They will have to have three tables over there at the dinner. One for Ed and Alex, one for Sammy and Mike, and one for Dave and his strippers and midgets.

I have a feeling that Sammy will decide not to go to the event. That would be very cool of him to do this that way.

Honestly what a Joke | 1/8/2007, 2:01 pm EST

R.E.M is great, but Van Halen come on! A group who can’t even stand to be in the same room with each other, and haven’t made a decent song since the USA won gold medals at basketball. How about honoring The Cure or The Stooges, or somebody who actually impacted music in a positive and recognizable way. At least we’ll get to see Dave’s leather skin

Asking for it.. | 1/8/2007, 1:54 pm EST

Grant Lee…
I didn’t want to get into a back and forth, but let’s be real here. EVH may be a gifted guitarist, but he is hardly any kind of groundbreaker a la Hendrix or even a Jeff Beck. VH the band was just another derivative rock act. You don’t really believe they belong enshrined alongside people like Zeppelin and the Who…do you?

NY Nate | 1/8/2007, 1:51 pm EST

NeverNever Girl,

Do you really have 27 chromosomes or was your post below serious?!? Van Halen was responsible for the paradigm shift in rock music in the eighties! Everyone wanted to be Eddie Van Halen if they played guitar and everyone wanted to be David Lee Roth if they were a male! Yeah, Stooges were neat along with The Ramones, Sex Pistols, Bad Brains (buddies of mine so I’m not on some “anti-Punk” theme here), but VH did it all from the recording to the performing to the partying. They were the omni-essence of an entire decade and millions of people idolized them!

Grant Lee Huffalump | 1/8/2007, 1:48 pm EST

“didn’t take themselves seriously”

Umm, have you ever heard an interview with Eddie Van Halen?
“didn’t take themselves seriously.”

Did you know when they meet fans, you cannot even look at Eddie’s hands?
“didn’t take themselves seriously.”

Did you know Eddie used to turn his back to the crowd so fans wouldn’t learn his technique?

Yeah, VH “didn’t take themselves seriously”.

Donovan | 1/8/2007, 1:45 pm EST

van halen is awful. just awful. stooges need in.

AnnieNum21 | 1/8/2007, 1:44 pm EST

um, bryan adams??? - where the hell is he???

Asking for it.. | 1/8/2007, 1:44 pm EST

Do they not have any ‘quality’ metric for the Hall? REM, PSmith are groundbreaking artists…VH is just total crap. The beauty of VH (to me) was always that they knew they were crap and didn’t take themselves seriously.

But the Hall of Fame? C’mon.

roberto | 1/8/2007, 1:37 pm EST

.i have a technical question regarding the inductees to this years rock n roll hall of fame.when i read that sammy hagar was on the bill with van halen a question appeared.to be eligible you have to have recorded an album 25 years ago.but wait a minute as a solo artist sammy hagar is eligible because he released albums before 1981 but as a member of van halen his first album was 5150 released in 1985.therefore he would only be eligible as a vh member by the year 2010.anybody has an answer to that?

MojoPin | 1/8/2007, 1:18 pm EST

Ditto John B. re: VH’s influence vs. the Stooges…Completely agree with his take

yep | 1/8/2007, 1:18 pm EST

Never Never girl, you should NEVER post another dumbass comment on here, you obviously dont even know what a guitar is let alone how rock and roll has evolved

Rowr | 1/8/2007, 1:11 pm EST

F Patty Smith.

Where’s Ig? Stooges Rule OK!

John B | 1/8/2007, 1:10 pm EST

Hey Never Never Girl- Van Halen didn’t bring about a change? Did you miss “Eruption”? Ever see the Eddie and Dave wanna be’s that covered the rock world? The Stooges were great, but Van Halen was in a class all it’s own. It’s about time they were honored. Ditto Deep Purple. Talk about a cage match- Blackmore and Gillan-especially after Blackmore’s image was removed from the “Machine Head” t-shirts. Ouch!

charliemapleton | 1/8/2007, 1:01 pm EST

Hopefully next year’s inductees:

Chuck Brown
The Gap Band
Teena Marie
Hall & Oates

Del Mcronde | 1/8/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Blue Oyster Cult, Rush, Deep Purple, Cheep Trick, and The Cars are being robbed so far when it comes to the hall of fame. I’ll bet if there was an artist that farted in a bowl and recorded it in the 70’s that would be different and artsy enough for them to make it.

Eddie Vedder's beard | 1/8/2007, 12:48 pm EST

Kiss

Kiss

Kiss

Kiss

Oh yeah…

KISS!

Larry | 1/8/2007, 12:47 pm EST

John Mellencamp should get a life-time ban from the Rock Hall of Fame for that lame song, “This is our Country” that plays on Chevy commercials and is on television at least 17,990 times per day.

Killa | 1/8/2007, 12:45 pm EST

5150 is a dope album but Diamond Dave is certainly superior to Hagar.

NeverNever Girl | 1/8/2007, 12:45 pm EST

What happened to the Stooges? As awesome as Van Halen are, and as much as I love the David Lee Roth-fronted version, it’s not like they were a completely original force of nature that changed rock and roll forever. Whereas the Stooges. . .well, they were, and they did. It would be nice to see the Hall honor historical significance instead of number of records sold.

Jason | 1/8/2007, 12:42 pm EST

Doesn’t Madonna qualify now to be considered?

jrcash | 1/8/2007, 12:26 pm EST

Doubly interesting since apparently Michael Anthony is now in the Sammy camp and is not going back out on the reunion tour with the other three.

The Ronettes hadn’t made it before???

Thank God they got Patti Smith right. And REM.

Can’t wait for next year… Metallica?? John Mellencamp?? Run DMC?? (eligible?)

gentledental | 1/8/2007, 12:16 pm EST

No Stooges, that is interesting considering that none of those other acts are even worthy enough to carry around iggy’s nutsack.

charliemapleton | 1/8/2007, 12:15 pm EST

It’s gonna be fire seeing Flash display his synchronized turntable skills once again.VH -with both Dave and Sammy-this should be a combustible experiment(and I mean that in a good way).

MojoPin | 1/8/2007, 12:11 pm EST

quite honestly, if it weren’t for the Dave version of VH, there is no way Sammy would’ve succeeded with VH. Dave laid the groundwork and the first 6 VH albums are seminal works in the history of rock and roll. Dave’s version of VH is one of only a handful of bands that has 2 albums that have sold more than 10 million copies. Sammy can’t claim one.

MojoPin | 1/8/2007, 12:08 pm EST

is this a rhetorical question? Diamond Dave’s version of VH smokes Sammy’s.

cleverock.com | 1/8/2007, 12:03 pm EST

Since when was a joke about a cage fight a support for war and violence? Let’s see a performance with Diamond Dave at the induction ceremony followed by a 2007 summer tour.

likroper.com | 1/8/2007, 11:37 am EST

on one hand; RS opposes war and/or violence, but on the other hand RS supports war and/or violence…what is up with that?…

Davey Ray | 1/8/2007, 11:32 am EST

No Gary Cherone?
