Lunchtime Poll: Who Rocks Your Crystal Ball?

1/8/07, 12:05 pm EST

Black Lips Heather

You have rock ESP. You are therefore the secret weapon of every major record label in America (the U.K. has its own medium). You already know which shitty band is going to be big this year (not that you can tell us) but for once you want to use your powers for good. When you’re not fast-tracking Hinder, you enjoy listening to genuinely awesome music, and this year you plan on telling your biggest clients to bet the house on a smallish artist that you love, but who will likely never secure that whole chart-topping TRL fame thing. Who do you name? (We suggest the Black Lips).

Giant Drag…if drummer hasn’t really left that is. Annie Hardy is still WAY badass, but crippled without that goddamn drummer. Giant Drag rules!

Any band that:

a) isn’t emo
b) isn’t comprised of boys that wear girls jeans
c) hasn’t been discovered by a celebrity
b) doesn’t break out via Mazda commercial

MR. JONES | 1/8/2007, 1:58 pm EST

I would bet that either the Format will have a late breaktrhough with last year’s great “Dog Problems,” or that Youth Group will become the next Death Cab based on their next cd (if it’s as good as their last one).

i second that vote for the fratellis.

Johnny Hardcock | 1/9/2007, 2:02 am EST

Johnny Hardcock and the Throbs are the best group probably ever. Read the acclaim (it’s acclaiming):

“Shut that shit up, or I’ll call the cops!”–Buzz “Buzzkill” Peters, Neighbor.

“I’ll kill Buzzkill,” Joey “I’m Gonna Kill Our Neighbor, Buzzkill” Thorton, Bass Guitar.

“Those gentlemen [Johnny Hardcock and the Throbs] should stop playing with the church organ.” –Deacon Fred Rogers.

“I wish I could be Johnny Hardcock cool.” –Iggy Pop
’s brother, Billy Pop.

“Sometimes, when I’m really drunk, I’ll felate Johnny. But only when he pays me, and only for the challenge; it’s shaped like a J, you see–no shit.” –Your Mom (she’s a Gypsy.)

I think that someone should stick a plug in the mouth and the ass of that dude who keeps demending that Rolling Stone fire Elizabath Goodman. Ha Ha

or Johnny Hardcock and the Throbs, i’ve read some really acclaiming acclaim on them.

The Shins

I know they’re kinda famous and are already signed to SubPop, but seriously, these guys should have multi-platinum records.

ri | 1/9/2007, 7:14 pm EST

i agree with the shins and i think the sex pistols didnt get the credit they diserved even though sid was a total crazy person but they still made awsome music and did somthing for music

B-Mac | 1/9/2007, 8:25 pm EST

Brand New…and for all of you “emo” haters, they do not sound like the same band of 5 years ago. Deja Entendu and The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me are two of the greatest most under appreciated albums of the last couple years

the buynak | 1/10/2007, 12:53 pm EST

my rock-and-roll esp is registering with high intensity. this dude by the name of Trevor Hall will take over the world in a few years. mark my words. you heard it from the buynak first, so don’t go lying to your friends saying you listened to this guy way back before he was famous.

Martin | 1/11/2007, 2:11 pm EST

Weta: Awesome Kiwi band. Too bad they broke-up in 2001.
