Jewel Brings Our Attention To Pressing Industry Questions

Jewel

Jewel thinks records cost too much. The sultry country star who is currently in between labels, has decided to take on the bloated record industry by recording a video for $5,000. (That’ll teach them). “I’m going to continue my career by trying to make records that are affordable,” the singer said. “I think records cost too much and have such a big burden that you can’t make it back as an artist or as a label. I just made a video for $5,000 and filmed it on Super 8 on my ranch.” If we understand Jewel language (and we think we do) she’s saying that money has ruined the record industry. Perhaps going totally label-less and Super 8-ing it on one’s ranch is a little extreme, but is there something to be said for the argument that artists should go back to basics?

i think what she’s really saying is ‘please pay attention to me, because my career has gone in the crapper.’ didn’t sarah mclachlan do the same thing a year ago? guess jewel’ll be releasing A NIGHT WITHOUT TINSEL: MY CHRISTMAS WISHES come november.

Why doesn’t Jewel take the money from the “bloated record industry” make her dippy little home-movie video for only 5,000 bucks and then give the rest to a homeless shelter?

I’m just thinking out loud here…

In the days of my youth there used to be a number of “bootleg” or copies of 8-track cassettes, if someone had an 8 track recorder they sold “copies” for a couple of $. The strangest thing I ever saw was a Rolling Stones “bootleg” album pressed illegally apparently and sold illegally, some of the profits maybe went to supplying a new sailboat for the cadets! I like Jewel in 1980 I worked in Skagway, Alaska in archaeology and her songs remind me sometimes of the western plains covered in ash, and the home of “the cruel north wind”.

In a somewhat related topic. What I am currently listening to is Sonic Youth. I cannot get enough of them. Although I am 38, And a sworn alternative rocker since the Sex Pistols and the Clash. I have never been turned on to them. Rs. did an article on them and I have heard their names, so I jumped on-line to grab some of their highest “hits” On RS recommendation I grabbed “Incinerate”…WOW.. I grabbed all I could of their music. I recently went to their web site and Bought 5 Tee shirts knowing they would receive much of the revenue. I truly would like the artist that produce music that not only grabs my attention but I cannot live with out, to do well financially. I still would not do something as crazy as going out and buying their CD’s to get all the hogwash B’ sides I did not get from the top of the list.

perhaps the future lies within self-starter artists who create more from the human heart than from the corporate heart…

She’s Right! Music generally sucks and there seems to be a lack of talent and too much advertising. We do need to get back to basics.

hmm. i dont think i’d call jewel a “country star” considering the last crap pop album that she put out.
