Weekend Rock List: Songs Best Suited to Awkward Slow Dancing

1/5/07, 6:13 pm EST

Rock ListYou’re back in middle school. You have braces, uncomfortably long limbs, are either extremely short or tall and don’t even know how much worse it’s going to get in high school. However, you are still naive enough to get psyched about school dances. Here are the five definitive songs to play while slow dancing with a boy much shorter than us. What other songs make for good stiff-armed slow dancing?

  • “Take My Breath Away,” Berlin
  • “Don’t Speak,” No Doubt
  • “Stairway to Heaven,” Led Zeppelin
  • “Fade Into You,” Mazzy Star
  • “Crazy for You,” Madonna

Just seeing these song titles makes me think back to those days, and I’m overwhelmed by a sense of nausea and grief. Can we please go back to talking about Saddam hanging songs?

RedSG | 1/5/2007, 8:42 pm EST

If you were in middle school or high school from about 1994-1999, then you’d probably have the following as your #1… or at least in your top 7…

Boyz II Men
-On Bended Knee
-I’ll Make Love to You
-Water Runs Dry

You know when those songs came on things got slow and awkward

Toni | 1/6/2007, 1:32 am EST

Duran Duran – Ordinary World.

7th grade memories. Ahh.

linds | 1/6/2007, 1:52 am EST

The horrible theme song from the Titanic.
At least that’s what was playing during my first slow dance in the 6th grade.

abandonedstation | 1/6/2007, 2:48 am EST

unchained melody – the righteous brothers
freshman – the verve pipe (no, it’s not very good, but it’s what we danced to in grade 6/7)
without you – harry nilsson
angie – the stones
nobody does it better – carly simon

MsMash | 1/6/2007, 3:15 am EST

“It must have been love” – Roxette – from the Pretty Woman movie. Ah, those were the (awful and bepimpled) times…

Outlaw_Biker | 1/6/2007, 7:06 am EST

I guess RS forgot the era where sawdust was on gymnasium floors, Elvis was a new name and songs were no more than 3 minutes long.

The 50-60’s era of rock had the best slow, ass-grabbing songs there ever was.
Damn..sure is a bitch being old (60 here) Seems everyone forgets the roots of music.

Jymn | 1/6/2007, 9:23 am EST

“When A Man Loves A Woman” – Percy Sledge

destroy all hamsters | 1/6/2007, 9:50 am EST

Purple Rain – Prince

Champ Burgundy | 1/6/2007, 10:49 am EST

“I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” was always a great one for this, because it’s long and for fast in the middle.

J | 1/6/2007, 11:03 am EST

“Search and Destroy”

Rory | 1/6/2007, 11:57 am EST

I remember “All My Life” by KC and Jojo was all the rage when I was in middle school. Sad….

krose | 1/6/2007, 12:02 pm EST

I will never get over dancing with my first crush to Cinderella’s “Don’t know what you got till it’s gone”.

likroper.com | 1/6/2007, 12:02 pm EST

in the 7th and 8th grade we used to DEMAND to hear led zeppelin black dog during DJ dances, even though the DJ said it was too herky jerky and undanceable(we usually had bands at dances but sometimes had DJ w/records)

iwannarock | 1/6/2007, 12:09 pm EST

“stairway to heaven” was the theme to the junior prom in my high school back in 1998…akward.

“Mama, I’m coming home” and “November Rain” were on the ballots, too.

Chris | 1/6/2007, 1:28 pm EST

9th grade – “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica. Nice holding on to someone while Kirk wails away on that solo

Rick | 1/6/2007, 1:58 pm EST

Billy Joel — “This Night” from his 1983 album “An Innocent Man”. The best 60s song not written in the 60s. Billy Joel is a genius.

Brian | 1/6/2007, 2:13 pm EST

Mudvayne “Dig”….it was a very weird dance

november rain- guns n roses

Greg | 1/6/2007, 4:49 pm EST

I occasionally hear indoor locations described as having sawdust on the floor, such as seedy bars, bad restaurants, and now (re: Outlaw Biker’s post) high school gyms. Is this sawdust put down intentionally or does it arise from people doing woodwork in proximity to other people eathing, drinking and dancing? Why have I never seen sawdust on the floor of anything except a workshop or a house under construction?

Beck – Debra. “I wanna get with you, and your sister…”

Chuck | 1/6/2007, 7:04 pm EST

Celine Dion singing
“it’s all coming back to me now” is murder. I remember dodging this cow back in 9th grade for the whole dance, and she finally caught up to me with this song…it’s what, 20 minutes long? Damnit to hell it ruined my life.

andrew | 1/6/2007, 7:55 pm EST

8th grade dance playlist:

all my life – k-ci & jojo

Cyndie Lauper – Time After Time
Aerosmith – I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing
James Blunt – You’re Beautiful

I don’t know how a list of middle school slow songs could be this long and not include Savage Garden’s “Truly Madly Deeply.” It was the ultimate at mine. You could count on it playing 2-3 times a dance.

Brighter Than Sunshine – Aqualung I only really like it cause it me and my GF’s song

slow dancing? Anything by Slayer.

Mm Hm | 1/8/2007, 11:49 am EST

Shut up, Elizabeth Goodman. Yeah OK, the breakdown in “stairway to heaven” for slow dancing? More like head banging, you twit. Of all the slow songs you could have chosen, you go with Bonham’s thunderous drums and Page’s fast spiraling guitar. Are you on crack? “Fade into You” is more like it.

bonnie | 1/8/2007, 12:30 pm EST

Forever Young (original slow version)- Alphaville

Lost In Your Eyes – Debbie Gibson

Sign Your Name – Terrence Trent D’Arby

MR. JONES | 1/8/2007, 1:48 pm EST

MOS DEF dissed Bono in a song for not showing up in the Catrina debacle, and it’s obvious why. Because there were too many other celebrities there. they would’ve taken all the attention away from mr. i’m a fucking publicity hound!

BODI | 1/8/2007, 3:23 pm EST

There ya go RockGod!! “I won’t be told anymore……….”

Anonymous | 1/8/2007, 3:28 pm EST

NOVEMBER RAIN-GNR. Trying to slow dance during the end would be funny.

Timo | 1/8/2007, 4:14 pm EST

Candlebox- “Far Behind”… I had never heard it and really wanted to dance with my date… yeah, it awkwardly turns into a post-hairmetal maelstrom of guitar solo suck.

For the record- anyone who bags on U2 should just go away and forget how to breathe.

ginger breadman | 1/8/2007, 5:32 pm EST

edwin mcain- ill be

cause theres no way you dont get laid after listening to that one

btw- U2 is lame and all of this hype about James brown is a waste, you couldnt understand what that cracked out sorry excuse for a “musician” had to say. really…try to listen to anything he did and if your even semi intellignet youll wish for 5 minutes of your life back

tim | 1/8/2007, 8:35 pm EST

stairway was terribly akward…having to shield your 8th grade boner for 7 minutes, yikes!

likroper.com | 1/9/2007, 1:47 pm EST

i had various secret crushes on various secret girls when i was younger, and i probably would’ve had a nasty secret crush on curler girl as well…

(but! none of these secret love agents actually knew about these crushes, unless i accidentally told one of their friends and got laughed at from across the schoolyard, that is)

Brian | 1/15/2007, 5:27 pm EST

“Everything I do, I do it for you”

-Brian Adams

They used to put it three times during 1 school dance. It was in 1991…
