And now for your very favorite blog item of the week . . . CHART ROUND-UP! As per usual, things have fallen off a bit in the week after the retail bonanza that was the Xmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa push. Nonetheless, albums were, in fact, sold. Some interesting tidbits:
- The Dreamgirls soundtrack landed at Number Three on the charts, selling 104,366 units this week. Not amazing. BUT if you look closely at the charts (as we’re sure you all do), you’ll notice that a “Collector’s Edition” version of the very same album is listed separately, residing comfortably at Number Sixty. Add the sales of both albums together and you come up with 130,204 units sold — a number that exceeds Omarian’s Number One album, 21, by more than ten thousand units. Tricky tricky. See, that’s why they pay us the big bucks!
- Our pals at Coolfer point out that the Top Ten is dominated by hip hop artists (Akon, Nas, Young Jeezy), which just goes to show that even if George Bush doesn’t care about black people, he’s in the minority.
- Cute quasi-Christian surfer dudes Switchfoot make a decent debut at Number Eighteen (slow week, people!). A formidable 16% of sales were digital, which we guess means their fans know how to use computers. Shocking.
