James Brown’s Last Gig. PLUS: Plans for the Biopic

12/28/06, 11:01 am EST

James Brown, Apollo

Thousands of people have begun to flock to the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, to pay their final respects to James Brown.

While just about everyone in the world, from presidents to celebrities, has eulogies for the singer of "Sex Machine," both Usher and Fergie are very publicly vying for roles in the upcoming Spike Lee–directed biopic of James Brown, that was announced the day after he passed away.

The biggest endorsement Usher could have ever gotten came when he performed with the "Godfather of Soul" at the 2005 Grammy Awards, where Brown anointed the "Confessions" singer the "Godson of Soul."

Meanwhile, we’ll refer to Fergie as the "Goddaughter of sweaty crotches."

And here we go with at least two or three years of bullshit about how James Brown was the Greatest American Musician Ever! Fine with me, at least now we won’t be obliged to pretend to love that miserable fucking Johnny Cash anymore.

I’m waiting for the biopic of Limp Bizkit…

And I heard they’re doing one for Bob Dylan. But I doubt it’s gonna work cause he’s not dead yet. Shame.

What’s Fergie gonna do in the biopic? Please don’t let it be acting. Please Please Please!

lobsters,

i’m guessing that you mama didn’t give you enough love as a child.

either that, or you stuck a screwdriver in your dickhole this morning.

MastaSlapaHo | 12/28/2006, 12:32 pm EST

Lobsters…your moma musta been a crackheaded whore. Someone shoulda finished the job and stepped on your head when you were shat out of your moma’s womb. Eat a dick.

Cosignior | 12/28/2006, 12:44 pm EST

Yeah…I’m tired of hearing about Johnny Cash’s sad access!

St. Robinson | 12/28/2006, 1:42 pm EST

Lobsters does have a point, everyone seems to get way better after they die. It’s sad, but true. We all know that James was unbelievable (hell I saw him at Bonnaroo in ‘03 WHEN HE WAS 70 and it kicked righteous ass) but hyperbole is still hyperbole. I like Johnny Cash too, but once again, I admit Lobsters has a point….no one in the general public gave much of a shit about him or Ray Charles until they died, sad but true. I’m sure all you “real music fans” are going to jump on me and say how you always LOVED James and Johnny and Ray (not to mention Warren) but I’m gonna go ahead and say no, you probably didn’t. I think if anyone that’s died recently deserves to be over-hyped it’s Ahmet, a man who truly helped to invent rock’n'roll. (To anyone that posts after me saying Ahmet doesn’t deserve it, or even worse asks who he was, let me now gently suggest fucking yourself)

I WOULD NOT WAIT HOURS OR EVEN MINUTES TO SEE HIS BLOATED CORPSE!

HE WAS OK BUT HE WAS NO ELVIS!

THE END!

Melaninamama | 12/28/2006, 3:12 pm EST

Who are thse psychotic pathetiques for whom Mr. Brown was so legendary that they scutter around vainly reaching for a pacity of available vocabulary to express their own lack of positive self esteem.? They are the un-James; so be it..Selah

Shelly | 12/28/2006, 3:13 pm EST

Fergie is an untallented person that i think had a boob job, well anyway she sucks! lol

Love Never Dies | 12/28/2006, 10:47 pm EST

St. Robinson I have loved James Brown since I was a little and yes, LOVED! I tried to meet him but, without success. Some claim to be fans and some were just sight seeing, as for myself, I don’t claim to have loved him, it’s a fact. Lobster he was one of the greatest and a true legend. I won’t disrespect his memory by cussing you out…but you know what you can do for us both. As for DAKOTA FANNING IS YUMMY! He won’t give a _ _ _ _, your ass will be the same way one day and for sure NO ONE will line up to see you.

May his soul rests in peace.

charliemapleton | 12/29/2006, 3:10 pm EST

James Brown-brought flair and finesse onstage and off, gracefully touched everything that turned to gold and platinum(not to say he was the only one),overall helped r&b and soul become a strong, stable genre within the globe, and some of y’all act like he was a tick on y’all’s shoulder? That’s very disrespectful.

James Brown is the most sampled person in hip hop and he started the funk and all of the people like Parliament Funkadelic came after him and ALL of the funk bands..James is the king not Elvis

MY PERSONAL FAVORITES

From The Man that made them:

“Make It Funky”
“Superbad,Pts. 1&2″
“The Payback”
“Get Up Offa That Thang”
And most importantly…”SAY IT LOUD(I’M BLACK AND I’M PROUD)”!!!!!

And the people that praised him:

Clipse feat. Pharrell,Ab-Liva,and Roscoe P. Coldchain-”Hot Damn”

Beyonce feat. Jay Z-”Crazy In Love”,”Deja Vu”(regardless if the two of those tracks are/are not sampled vice versa,it’s still pretty worthy and similar of and to James Brown formula)

Terrence Trent D’Arby-”Dance Little Sister”,”Wishing Well”

Salt ‘N’ Pepa-”Do You Really Want Me”,”Whatta Man”(feat. EnVogue)(not that I feel that way about Mr. James because I don’t roll like that, but of course overall that is the jam)

Tony!Toni!Tone!-”Tell Me Mama”

Mystical-”Shake It Fast”(obviously-Pharell adding a little bit of that Curtis Mayfield formula didn’t hurt either)

EnVogue-”Give It Up,Turn It Loose”

Beck-”The New Pollution”(who can forget that unforgettable dance routine-a la Soul Brother #1-at the ‘97 MTV VMA’s?real smooth)

Keep on steppin’ up in heaven,Mr. Brown!
