Fall Out Boy’s Super Indie Venue for Debuting Fan Cover Art

12/27/06, 12:37 pm EST

Those kooky kids in Fall Out Boy have been holding all sorts of interactive contests to promote their already highly anticipated upcoming album, Infinity On High .

First they asked fans to design the cover. They received more than 3,000 submissions, from piss-poor doodles to overdone artwork by graphic-design majors. The winning image, pictured below, is some aqua-erotica subliminal mind-trip fantasy.

Fall Out Boy

If fans want this cover instead of the Gwen Stefani–inspired LAMB cover, they have to buy the album as a digital download from some tiny, hard-to-find indie shop named Wal-Mart.

The band responsible for such snappy titled tracks as “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” and “I Slept With Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me” asked fans to name a yet-to-be recorded song that will become a B-side. The winning entry chosen by the band is titled “It’s Hard To Say ‘I Do’ When I Don’t.”

Now if only their music was as clever as their song titles.

THIS BAND SUCKS! WHAT RS GAY OWNER JANN WANNA SUCK THESE LOSERS?

Steven Tyler | 12/27/2006, 1:22 pm EST

i agree w/ R here’s a clever song title, “Fall Out Boy Will Fade Away Someday If Not Today”, they are so desperate to keep thier fans through gimics because they’re music sucks, it’s pre school punk, a gateway to better things that they could never be. They only good thing about fall out boy is that while annoying, they at least manage to take attention off Britteny Spears and the Backstreet Boys.

baba o riley | 12/27/2006, 1:38 pm EST

where’s elizabeth?

Scream | 12/27/2006, 2:19 pm EST

Does anybody know a band worse than FOB? *silence* I didn’t think so.

... | 12/27/2006, 3:49 pm EST

Actually Scream, panic at the disco, is right up there. Gah these bands suck real bad, I seriously hope that RS does not jump onto the emo band-wagon and starts supporting these “bands”

JB | 12/27/2006, 5:44 pm EST

Many unnecessary words do not a clever song title make.

I’m so annoyed with these “Look how clever and thoughtful we are!” bands. If you’re really clever and thoughtful, your music will speak for itself — you won’t have to constantly remind us by other means.

Jen | 12/27/2006, 6:30 pm EST

They are awesome. THAT COVER SUCKS!

Drew | 12/27/2006, 7:59 pm EST

Don’t you miss the days when a song name actually had something to do with the song? I sure do :-(

STRATCAT | 12/27/2006, 10:14 pm EST

This band represents one of the aspects of the downfall of culture in america.
To proclaim this horrible pathetic group of no talent losers as if they have anything valuable to offer just shows how the big wigs can sell off garbage as gold and the people buy because they don’t know any better.
People teach yourself instead and buy some Velvet Underground or Stones or Bowie or something of substance.
Shame on Rolling Stone for putting Britney Spears on their cover, for promoting this no talent pack of garbage, and for the other countless sell out acts that rolling stone has done.

You know what’s worse than long song titles? Musical elitists who hate that musical tastes change from generation to generation. You people aren’t any different than the people who told you your music was garbage. I guess the music of today’s youth isn’t made to appeal to these so called purists.

You guys see gimmicks instead of a band that cares about its fan base and doesn’t act inaccessable. I’m twenty five and I listen to Bowie and the Velvet Underground and all of that stuff, I may not be a Fall Out Boy fan but I dig how they do their thing…you close minded elitist d-bags need to take the little chip off your shoulders and stop wasting your time making snobby @$$ comments on the RS message board and go get yourself off to a Decemberist album or something.

STRATCAT | 12/28/2006, 11:08 am EST

Comments about finding real art instead of buying what they sell off to people as something of substance is called thinking for yourself and nothing more.
It’s called being able to tell the difference between what i consider waste and novelty as opposed to monumental groundbreaking works that everyone should enrich their lives and their cultre with.
Yes i listen to some bands today as some have something to offer but this band is to me today’s Good Charlotte.
Here today and gone tomorrow.
Cheers!

Yeah, Fall Out Boy isn’t great, but it’s stupid to mock their efforts to be more in touch with their fans. They’re ridiculously popular and the fact that they’re letting fans be a part of creating their songs/record is something to be applauded rather than twisted into a new way to say the same overused quip about their song titles.

kyle | 12/28/2006, 2:23 pm EST

First of all to the kid who said they’re here today gone tomorrow, theyve been around since 2000. They’ve all been in bands for way longer and been involved in the scene for way longer than these 6 almost 7 years. The fact that they do this shows that they give a shit about their fans and the fact that they’re playing a tour in venues that really aren’t that big is a great thing by them.

blah blah blah | 12/28/2006, 2:55 pm EST

Most bands don’t try as hard as they do to make their fans feel like they are a part of something. It’s unfair to compare them to any other band that’s out there or to any “scene” they may or may not even be a part of willingly. The truth is, we’re fans of this band because they are like us. They’re the same nerds they’ve always been, they can just afford better clothes. I say, back off. If all you have to do with your time is sit around and criticize everything “new”, then you’re just missing the point all together. We don’t love this band because they’re “The Best Band Ever!!!!11″, we love them because they’re our band and remind us of it all the time. We love them because they are LIKE us.

weesnaw | 12/28/2006, 3:38 pm EST

what an ass.
Fall Out Boy deserve a little more respect.
at least Fall Out Boy have their fans in mind.
most bands don’t even give a shit.

Naden | 12/28/2006, 4:04 pm EST

Stop being an asshole! Fall Out Boy is a great band and they’re trying their best. At least they care about their fans and allow them to collaborate with the making of the album. You need to pull that stick out of your butt, because they need a bit more respect. Thanks.

cheesecrop | 12/28/2006, 7:44 pm EST

I am not a big fan of this group at all, but at least they are making some attempt to connect w/fans. By the way, despite all the back and forth yelling here, no one has mentioned how interesting the artwork is.

Angelicca | 12/29/2006, 1:47 am EST

I am a big fan of Fall out Boy, i promote them to the world as a fanscape rep and its my job to promote not just them but other bands to, like panic at the disco, AFI, My chemical Romance and so much more, i think that having a ‘design our cover’ contest is a great way to share the success with the fans and allowing them to express there emotion in there design and in doing so coming up with some fantastic designs. The winning design i think is the most wonderful it looks difficult but yet could be simple, it really fools with your mind which i really like. People may not like Fall Out Boy but you know every person has a different taste in music and well some just don’t have the Fall Out Boy limelight like some. So to all memebers of the band, keep doing what your doing and i’ll keeop doing what im doing in order to give you even more fans than you can handle.
:)

Virginia | 12/30/2006, 8:25 pm EST
