Why would you do this?

nick | 12/27/2006, 4:39 pm EST

err: why didn’t you do this?

buckfutter | 12/27/2006, 4:42 pm EST

its sad when the fake covers are better than the actual covers that were put out

CK | 12/27/2006, 4:50 pm EST

Arthur Lee

infected mouth | 12/27/2006, 4:53 pm EST

sigh…rollingstone! you should have done this cover!!!

Zach Hansen | 12/27/2006, 4:55 pm EST

I can’t believe this didn’t make it! Just shows you that RollingStone means nothing! Its fake, just like the “musicians” it chooses to do its pieces on… Sad, truly sad, now we can understand why Rock and Roll is dead and who was responsible for the death of Rock and Roll….

dustin | 12/27/2006, 4:58 pm EST

you messed up!

Dinkus | 12/27/2006, 5:04 pm EST

I think eminem should have been on the cover.

Dinkus | 12/27/2006, 5:08 pm EST

Eminem should have been on every cover, he is the only relavent artist in music today.

boo boo | 12/27/2006, 5:36 pm EST

what the hell!
they should have done this,i really dig pink floyd but after seeing the early days with syd they could have never became what they had with out him!!

ben | 12/27/2006, 5:38 pm EST

rock is dead because too many pussies listen to good charlotte and panic at the disco. metallica is the last heartbeat of rock, and even that is fading fast.

Anonymous | 12/27/2006, 5:42 pm EST

Trent Reznor. Mounted a year-long tour to sold out arenas, and released the best album of 2005-2006, ‘With Teeth’. Now sober, Reznor may be reaching his creative peak. More to come it appears

DrJ | 12/27/2006, 5:47 pm EST

Why didn’t RS run this cover? No doubt because what Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera were up to was simply TOO culturally important not to give them the cover.

h | 12/27/2006, 5:47 pm EST

this cover that was not is the best rolling stone cover i’ve seen in a long damn time…..what’s up rs….where are your music lovers when it’s time to select a cover!??!!

Steve | 12/27/2006, 6:02 pm EST

Should have done this cover! I was never a huge early Floyd fan or Syd Barrett. There is no doubt that Barrett was a founding member of most of the most best bands of all time. I also understand Barrett released a pretty good solo album too. One can see the influence of PF in Radiohead and most of the ambient music we see today.

hendrix19 | 12/27/2006, 6:13 pm EST

you should put a legend like Barret on the cover. RS get in touch with your roots. None of this because the music is popular bullshit. Like Timberlake or Fergie. That’s not even music. Timberlake’s album was so synthesized it was revolting. Put a legend and someone who actually changed the face of music not just added to it.

Gretchin | 12/27/2006, 6:14 pm EST

Pink Floyd is a founding father of rock and roll, it seems as though Rolling Stones has fallen to the teenage pop icon industry. Let me guess Paris Hilton is your favorite or Britney Spears because they are true musicians???? They bring in the money and that is all you care about, bringing in the money and not the music. So Sad!!

Space Pen | 12/27/2006, 6:31 pm EST

killerssssss

Joe | 12/27/2006, 6:35 pm EST

the Ipod it’s definetly changing the music industry as we speak!

Anonymous | 12/27/2006, 6:43 pm EST

I would like to think that the reason this cover wasn’t put out was due to it not being that good, maybe I’m missed the weak humour in this but it’s pretty lame.

To me RS is like a wobbly tooth, it’s still just about annoying enough to keep coming back for, but if you guys had more balls you could come up with much better covers than this and the ones released.

Jeff Journey | 12/27/2006, 7:02 pm EST

The Rick Ray Band should be on the cover, their music is beyond anything in the category of music…if you’re unaware of that fact than consider yourself ignorant!
Jeff

jared t | 12/27/2006, 7:08 pm EST

tool needs on the cover of rolling stone, the mars volta too, would have like to seen audioslave too

ken vail jr. | 12/27/2006, 7:29 pm EST

arthur lee-i like that choice but the casual music fan has no clue who he is.

Mike27 | 12/27/2006, 7:46 pm EST

Metallica!

but you prob wont do a cover of them, since you have no balls.

JASON | 12/27/2006, 8:00 pm EST

Why not put one of the best bands on the planet on your cover? The Mars Volta

JASON | 12/27/2006, 8:01 pm EST

God dammit, just fucking put The Mars Volta on the cover.

Boo | 12/27/2006, 8:07 pm EST

I want to be on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, because, in June 2005 someone drugged me unconscious for 2 days. Thereafter a crazy thing bunch of stuff happened every day.
Including Michael Jackson’s lawyers showed up at the Library; as shown on TV and “moslems” in veils, harassed me sometimes 5 times a day, every day, even when I went to London. They drugged me for 2 days and got me to go to London. met a movie star too, from the Dave Bowie Man who Fell to earth movie. Jann, that movie may have been about the same set of events the did to me 1973 when without my knowledge or consent they drugged out for 2 days opposite South Tower Street. The guy who did it, incidentally shoudl be on teh cover of rolling stone too since the believe pop songs were about him, even John Lennon. His surname was Forewood. How can we go forward when we don’t know which way we’re facing. Why would he do that to me, do you think?
so, buy the speil at
http://www.heatherjeane.com
Happ y New Year, and read about a coincidence that happened to gerry Ford when an associate of Forewood’s visited CA to ‘get some dope.’ Code named Kremlin.
Sorry to be so personal. But imagine you’re Jim Morrison, f Jimmy hendicks or even Elvis, and someone does that to you but you don’t wake up?

B-Rett | 12/27/2006, 8:18 pm EST

There ya go.
Ignore these other comments not even giving any suggestions.
I already suggested Syd, but, yeah, CHEAP TRICK made the best album of the year that no one has noticed.

james | 12/27/2006, 8:19 pm EST

rush!!!!!

old man | 12/27/2006, 8:19 pm EST

artist who can play & sing (without mixing) rather than just look pretty.

Pete | 12/27/2006, 8:19 pm EST

Thom Yorke!

Shaune | 12/27/2006, 8:20 pm EST

I agree..thom yorke should’ve been on the cover

even tho his album wasnt half as good as an album by radiohead

syd | 12/27/2006, 8:30 pm EST

the should have put this cover when syd died. he and pink floyd were one of the greatest band in the history and they had a great inbfluence in radiohead and today rock.
shine on you crazy diamond…
…………wish u were here

hendrix19 | 12/27/2006, 8:30 pm EST

K doin a cover of metallica would of been smart like i danno over 10 years ago when the black album came out or before… But St.Anger was a horrible album. Just cause their returning to the studio doesn’t mean shit.. Like they hired a band shrink to help them.. That’s real rock n roll right there.

Macross | 12/27/2006, 8:30 pm EST

W. Axl Rose

mrs. pickles | 12/27/2006, 8:32 pm EST

Robert Pollard.

Rolling Stone has YET to give him his due. One of the most prolific soundwriters of our time! Any guy who says, “I can write five masterpieces while I’m on the toilet.” has to be RS worthy!

CellPhone | 12/27/2006, 8:39 pm EST

Stewie Griffin. LOL

hendrix19 | 12/27/2006, 8:40 pm EST

k ya robert pollard is a great songwriter with over 900 songs registered to his name. But he was in Guided By Voices and he’s just not edgy or cool. Yea sure the man can write a catchy song but he doesn’t have the attitude or prowess.

ICO | 12/27/2006, 9:13 pm EST

Not a big fan but MCR put out the best album of the year so in my opinion they deserved it.

mrs. pickles | 12/27/2006, 9:41 pm EST

Pollard doesn’t have attitude? You’re obviously not much of a fan. That guy talks shit about EVERYONE (including all 1,000 ex bandmates) and puts on one of the best shows (okay, drunken) in rock.

Any guy that can point at his bass player live on stage and scream “This guy used to fuck Kim Deal!” Has more attitude than Axl’s corn rows.

teenage FBI | 12/27/2006, 9:44 pm EST

Right on! Robert Pollard!

Sparty | 12/27/2006, 10:01 pm EST

Definitely Thom Yorke. Great album. One of the best of the year.

Note to all those who come on to trash RS. We get it, you don’t like RS and you think they’ve gone downhill. Fine. Why do you waste your time? (why am I wasting mine?)

moe | 12/27/2006, 10:05 pm EST

thom yorke!

chad | 12/27/2006, 10:06 pm EST

Jack White

Chase | 12/27/2006, 10:08 pm EST

R.I.P. Dimebag Darrell

Lorenzo | 12/27/2006, 10:38 pm EST

Shoulda made the cover? TOOL
1.2 million albums sold this year and a sold out metal tour! What else do you need?

Elizabeth | 12/27/2006, 10:55 pm EST

Asides from Syd Barrett, The Decemberists.

thewufs | 12/27/2006, 10:55 pm EST

For the love of God, please put James Brown on the cover of the next Rolling Stone. A true giant of popular music deserves a big farewell, and for all of your Beatles covers you owe at least one to the Godfather (he may have been on an RS cover or covers before for all I know, but I’m sure he’s nowhere the Fab Four’s total, which is a shame really). I’m not going to get into comparative influence here, and heck, I’m not even a huge JB fan, but in the popular consciousness he really hasn’t gotten his due. Not when Ray Charles and Johnny Cash have had their postmortem biopics and subsequent hit records, not when we get a new bestselling Beatles comp every year, not when thousands of Elvis impersonators were raking in the dough even before “30 #1 Hits” became a worldwide smash. It doesn’t take a genius to note that our popular culture dotes heavily on white rock stars while legendary black entertainers are forgotten. But if death can give such a major career boost to historical popular musicians outside the Anglocentric rock pantheon, RS should do its bit to assure Soul Brother Number One gets the royal treatment he deserves even if he’s no longer with us.

ben swof | 12/27/2006, 11:11 pm EST

the snoop dogg cover was hillarious, but jesus that article made me lose any respect for him that i had ever had. He has some cool songs, but none of them are recent or anything. Put someone who matters on there. I love the Artic Monkeys, Wolfmother – any of these new guys making the music industry a little more worth while. Or just put Colbert on there again. :D

The Grubby 1 | 12/27/2006, 11:15 pm EST

I would be very happy to see Syd on the cover. He has influenced so many and he hasn’t really released that much. I wouldn’t be unhappy if some new groovy band like The Arctic Monkeys or TV on the Radio got on the front.

I’m with the Pollard posters. That dude never gets the press he deserves. Don’t let it get to the point where he’s only given props when he’s dead (of alcohol poisoning most likely)

Your_Final_Answer | 12/27/2006, 11:43 pm EST

After seeing Guns N’ Roses last week in L.A., there is no question it’s Axl Rose – especially considering he will be the biggest name in rock in 2007. This one is a complete no-brainer.

driveitintohershehasalongback | 12/27/2006, 11:50 pm EST

syd barrett is cool but if you wanna put a band on who are gonna become one of the best.. kings of leon all the way!! cool bastards

cups and cakes | 12/27/2006, 11:56 pm EST

GBV! Bobby Pollard could 1) drink Axl under the table 2) Rock his corn-rowed ass off 3) Has written 100 songs better than ANYTHING off of A.F.D.

paul | 12/28/2006, 12:04 am EST

axl should have a cover in early 2007 becuse the most anticpated album in years is supposed to be comming out in march

Your_Final_Answer | 12/28/2006, 12:05 am EST

Bobby Pollard??? After last week’s GNR concert, the only frontman in history who could possibly upstage Axl Rose might be Jim Morrison. Other than that, there’s simply no contenders.

PeteHagen | 12/28/2006, 12:05 am EST

STAN LEE.
The guy helped create friggin’ Spider-Man for God’s sake.

Lauren | 12/28/2006, 12:13 am EST

Kurt Cobain, yes he’s been dead for almost 13 years very sad I know but he deserves it he started grung and it’s not the same without him FEBRUARY 20 1967 THE DAY I LOVE,APRIL 6, 1994 THE DAY I HATE

FALL OUT BOY

cups and cakes | 12/28/2006, 12:20 am EST

I was at the same show. Universal. Axl looks like he ate young Axl and then had 4 turkeys on the side.

Lauren | 12/28/2006, 12:21 am EST

Oh yea and Nikki Sixx or Tommy Lee either way I don’t care

phi delta crap | 12/28/2006, 12:29 am EST

Yeah– Pollard I can see being a hilarious cover. Would have to be him downing a brew or three at once. Either him or Sleater-Kinney– at least to show some respect for their “passing”.

“Hot Freaks!”

Why waste my time? | 12/28/2006, 12:43 am EST

…Retards… all of you. Axl shouldn’t be on the cover. Guns ‘n’ Roses was mediocre 20 years ago; now they’re just sad. 44 years old with corn rows? And you want him on the cover? Guided By Voices, on the other hand, isn’t quite pathetic enough to stage a reunion (yet?), but Pollard hasn’t done anything noteworthy since they split. Personally, I think Rolling Stone should continue its longstanding tradition of putting flavors/floozies of the month on their covers, thereby preventing anyone with even a scrap of intelligence or taste from mistakenly purchasing the magazine, or reading the self-satisfied, masturbatory ramblings of the failed musicians/writers that write for it.

phi delta crap | 12/28/2006, 12:54 am EST

I agree about Axl. Completely done. Pollard did put out the great double album From A Compound Eye this year and the F-ing A Keane Brothers album (one of his man side projects. Come on RS! Put him on!

? | 12/28/2006, 12:58 am EST

I agree. Axl Rose, he completely deserves it. I doubt he’d do it though

jim | 12/28/2006, 1:24 am EST

axl rocks he should definatly get a cover

darthharvey | 12/28/2006, 1:26 am EST

Dwight from The Office

Reader | 12/28/2006, 1:29 am EST

John Mayer I Know it sounds trendy but seriously his albums are outstanding and the posser Justin Timberlake beat him out of it please.

joe | 12/28/2006, 1:35 am EST

Why would axl get on the cover? For argueing with EODM? If he got on the cover every time he had a hissy-fit then there would be nothing but axl covers.

matt | 12/28/2006, 2:26 am EST

Jack White, mainly because he rules

B Mo | 12/28/2006, 2:36 am EST

Hands down is goes to the one and only W. Axl Rose. Although it doesn’t really matter because he’ll be on the cover sometime in the next 3 months. I love the people who post comments doubting him, because it’s gonna make it that much better to tell them to fu$k off when Axl rises like a phoenix from the ashes on 3-06-07. As for Robert Pollard, the dude was a 4th grade teacher up until 10 years ago and he looks like a pedophile. Some people just don’t get it…

Amanda | 12/28/2006, 3:34 am EST

Ryan Adams

live 4 ever | 12/28/2006, 3:52 am EST

Liam Gallagher and Noel Gallagher of Oasis should each get their own cover and articles/ interviews. These guys continue to push for rock greatness, even after the height of their fame in the mid-90s. Now that they released their first ever greatest hits (retrospective as they call it), they’ll be back with even more great tunes. 2005’s Don’t Believe the Truth was unbelievable (the closest modern rock record to sound like The Beatles’ Revolver & Ruber Soul), and according to Noel, the next batch of songs they got are as good, perhaps better once everything is final. Rolling Stone has got to get them back on the cover. They were only on it once, and their influence in rock all over the world is second to none.

B Mo | 12/28/2006, 4:25 am EST

That pic of Syd Barrett looks enough like a Gallagher brother, isn’t that enough? Ha

live 4 ever | 12/28/2006, 6:04 am EST

I would agree with B Mo and say it was actually a funny comment, but the truth is that Oasis is billions of times bigger and more important than that dude Syd Barrett. Yeah, he died, so no need for cheap shots, but it’s no cheap shot to say Oasis are much more important than him as well as more influential. Virtually every band coming out of England and most of Europe claim to have been heavily influenced by Liam and Noel Gallagher and the whole Oasis culture. So, nice try B Mo. Come up with something a little more clever and I might get a little laugh out of it. Ha!

live 4 ever | 12/28/2006, 6:14 am EST

I know there is also a lot of Axl Rose supporters for him to be on the cover, but honestly, can anyone really say Guns N Roses are still around? I saw a picture of one of their live shows and the band is not Guns N Roses, but more like Axl N New Guys. Seriously, I would love a Guns N Roses that included the two members that mattered, Slash and Axl. But as far as the cover goes, no, he shouldn’t get it. We all know what’s coming with Chinese Democracy, nothing. Does it deserve the hype, sure, it’s labeled as a Guns N Roses record, but that’s all to it. Believe me, when this record hits the stores, people will buy it large masses, it’ll sell millions upon millions, even have a hit single, but when the dust settles and clears, we’re all going to have a bad taste in our mouth. The record may have some spots of greatness, but it won’t be the greatest rock record of all-time, and that’s what it has to be so that Axl Rose and this so called Guns N Roses line-up become truly relevant.

B Mo | 12/28/2006, 7:48 am EST

First off I just want to say that I’m a fan of Oasis. They have good songs and I like their attitude. But seriously people lets get real. They can’t hold a candle to what Axl Rose has and will bring to the table (baggage included). People are commenting about how it’s not the old band, which is the key to why what he’s doing is going to be so incredible. He’s rebuilding Guns N Roses from the ashes into GNR version 2.0. A version that is going to emerge as not only relevant, but groundbreaking. Just wait and see. Also Live 4 Ever(good song by the way)if chinese democracy has touches of greatness, sells millions upon millions, and has a hit single. Explain to me how that would not make them relevant?

David | 12/28/2006, 8:11 am EST

Axl doesn’t get on the cover until Chinese Democracy is on the store shelves. Maybe that will give him extra incentive. Yes I do believe C.D. will come out in March but history is not on Axl’s side.

nurserock1 | 12/28/2006, 8:51 am EST

You choose to put a fake “produced” piece of crap like Fergie on the cover but wont represent the true genius of Syd. Why didn’t you do this cover. The artists you represent today are jokes. You used to call record companies and their so called “talent” out on the carpet. Now you’re just another piece in the advertising game for their latest release. Its sad really…what happened to the magazine with true opinions? The panning of Led Zeppelin…the shunning of Clapton and Cream. Where are the guts?

KEM | 12/28/2006, 9:22 am EST

No offense to RS, but most of the mentioned people (GBV – Bob Pollard, Decemberists, Radiohead, Rick Ray Band, and Syd Barrett if he were alive) wouldn’t do the RS cover. RS, great mag, great history, but they are going to put people who sell magazines on the cover. I agree with the Dwight from The Office cover…

Felipe | 12/28/2006, 10:13 am EST

CSS – Cansei De Ser Sexy of course! They’re are fun, they are Cool, and fits very well in a RS Cover Magazine!

CANSEI DE SER SEXY NOW!!!

DEVO!!
They have been around for over 20 yrs, they still tour and are the most original band to come out ever!

Timroc | 12/28/2006, 10:35 am EST

I agree 10,000 percent with nurserock 1. Jann, you are all about advertizing and profit. It is a challenge to differentiate between Rolling Stone and US magazine. My gosh, you don’t even have enough balls to get those WONDERFUL CARTOON PICTURES THAT WERE ALWAYS LARGER THEN LIFE on the back page inside cover. 1967 was John Lennon (How I won the War). So tell me Jann and company..do you have enough guts to GET BACK to where you once belonged? Are you even reading this for constructive feedback?

Kliffee | 12/28/2006, 10:36 am EST

Please stop talking about Axl..he’s insignificant. No matter how good Chinese Democracy is if it ever is released is not a good record. How many years did it take for him to make it? Same pretentious, bloated crap that brought about great bands in the 70s like The NY Dolls, Sex Pistols & The Ramones.

Kliffee | 12/28/2006, 10:37 am EST

THE NEW YORK DOLLS & THE SEX PISTOLS!!! The 2 most screwed rock bands in history who saved rock & roll from pretentious, bloated arena rock in the 70s and influenced several generations.

I Agree! CANSEI DE SER SEXY DESERVE IT!

ryan adams, please he has deserved it for quite awhile now. entertaining and talented, what more do you want?

EvilMulder666 | 12/28/2006, 11:42 am EST

Yeah, sorry Jann & Co., but this rag has fallen mighty far from grace. I mean, if I remember correctly, you did a cover/feature piece a few years back on a little outfit called “Crazytown” who had that suck-ass “Butterfly” single. You greenlighted that cover and story on the strength of that horrid song & a few tales of drunken So-Cal backyard brawling? By virtue of that logic, half the garage bands in the nation have the right to be on your cover. It’s a far cry from the days of Thompson, O’Rourke (in his heyday) and Crowe, that is for sure. In light of that observation, indeed you dropped the fucking ball not including Sydon a cover. His music may not be on mainstream radio, but the band he created is of historical rock importance. It is a slap in his face and in the face of the remaining members of PF who probably don’t give a shit about this magazine anyway.

EvilMulder666 | 12/28/2006, 11:49 am EST

Oh yeah, and Live 4 Ever? There wouldn’t BE an Oasis w/o the influence of Syd Barrett/PF and for you to say something like, “Oasis are much more important than him as well as more influential” merely demonstrates how little you know about rock and popular music in general. Nick Drake sold ass for records – ever see how many artists namedrop his ass almost daily? Same with Syd.

Kliffee | 12/28/2006, 11:59 am EST

The New York Dolls!!

jill hives | 12/28/2006, 12:07 pm EST

i agree with many here – bob pollard would be awesome. what RS should do is feature Pitchfork on the cover, so people know where they can find stories that do right by people like pollard, and mark e. smith for that matter.

And so now explain to us why this really didnt make it? For the real next one, I think you should put James Brown on the cover. But for the fake ones, Jack White, New York Dolls, Sonic Youth, or Beck.

vemrion | 12/28/2006, 1:33 pm EST

Iron Maiden and Queensryche both had awesome albums that RS ignored… Would be nice to see some “old” bands on the cover.

For everyone who wrote Thom Yorke and Radiohead, know your influences, Sid Barrett was a big one. This years covers were fine, and after all, who cares? But to have a go, I’d say Tool.

Nobody deserves to be on the cover more than Barrett–but then again, maybe he wouldn’t have wanted it that way. Floyd spent decades pining away for his soul–if he didn’t give it to them, why would he give it to a RS cover? It’s the best cover (albeit fake) RS has done in a while, but maybe it belongs here, in obscurity…

Cristhian | 12/28/2006, 2:43 pm EST

Devo deosn’t exist anymore. Put somebody like Nelly Furtado, or Bjork, or somebody with charisma. Not a bunch of ginormous headshots of Jack Nicholson, Bob Dylan, Neil DIamond, Johnny Depp with boring white backgrounds. BORING! The only exciting cover this year was Christina, because at least it had alittle bit of a theme. Also, don’t put a bunch of depressed tired rockers on the cover, we’re not in 1979 anymore.

nurserock1 | 12/28/2006, 4:02 pm EST

RS,
I’m looking at the cover of your “yearbook” issue for 2006. The concept of a magazine acting as a barometer for music, art, politics, and pop culture is noble. Its important to have and hold such documents. However as many of the other people mentioned on this board…we already have People Magazine or US magazine to do that for us. I have always counted on your magazine for something different. Tell me about today’s artists and the state of music. Get me into the head of those producing, writing, and creating today’s soundscapes. Turn us on to those who deserve recognition while fearlessly drubbing those that don’t belong. Meanwhile, continue documenting the pursuits and history of past artists.
It must be said, your present day sins (Fergie, American Idol, Christina Aguilera on the Cover) are still somehow forgiven in my mind by your great history. I’m not sure why. You have more recently tried to be part of the party (a friend) instead of documenting on it. While the rest of us sit and lament the sad state of music…you cheer (advertise) for the likes of Justin Timberlake (great SNL host), American Idols, and other Prefab pop stars! These are people and concepts that have no place on the cover of Rolling Stone. They smear its very name. Journalists of the past fought against and feared these very ideas! The death knell of music, the voice of the everyman, the common link between us all. Every song today is just basically a commercial…a product…I digress.
For some reason I still purchase your magazine hoping that you will prove yourself to me again. Journalistic Truth could still save music. We need a Lester Bangs…not writers afraid to call “popular” music today what it is…. plastic, fake, fabricated, unfeeling, millionaire garbage….they expect us to identify with it..but they can’t identify with us…Lester is rolling in his grave.

AXL F’ING ROSE. The return of the rock star. After over a decade of pussy ass wannabe’s who are either posing as party animals or comlaining about their parents. Axl Rose is almost officially back. Rollingstone’s in the business of selling mags and none would sell more than a front cover with Axl and the text CHINESE DEMOCRACRY IS FINALLY HERE!!!!

live 4 ever | 12/28/2006, 4:24 pm EST

To B Mo,

About my comments for the upcoming Guns N Roses record. Yes I said it could have a hit single, sell millions, hell, put Axl on the cover of Rolling Stone, but it wouldn’t be the first time a record sells well but ends up not being good. Latest example would be The Killers’ Sam’s Town, the first single was good, but the rest of the record is flat and the second single Bones is not good at all. Yet the record has had respectable sales. So my prediction for Chinese Democracy will be similar, it’ll have a radio hit, get tons of press (because it has the Guns N Roses name stamped on it, I truly feel the real Guns N Roses has to have Slash in it), it’ll be hyped up to an unreachable point, it’s just not going to happen. I’ll even take a hit as the Oasis fan boy here, when Be Here Now was released, the hype was incredible, and yes, there were some truly good if not great songs on it (D’You Know What I Mean?, Don’t Go Away, Stand By Me, I Hope I Think I Know, all great tracks), but at the end, the record was no where near as good as the hype suggested. So there, I’m even using Oasis as an example. I could be wrong, but this being the first “GNR” record in however long, I really don’t think the hype is going to be real.

Put The Who on the cover, for crying out loud. They’ve released their first new studio LP in 24 years, and it’s a winner. If The Stones waited 24 years to make a new studio LP, Rolling Stone would put them on the cover without thinking twice. Why treat The Who differently? Because The Who is a better band with a stronger back catalog? Oh yeah, The Who also is on its first WORLD TOUR since 1982. Come on, Rolling Stone. Wake up. Put Pete and Rog (and Zak, Pino, Simon and Rabbit) on the cover now, please ….

Prophet | 12/28/2006, 5:49 pm EST

Regardless of the Rolling Stone cover. I keep hearing a lot of people who doubt Axl and the “new” GNR’s potential. Rock music is in the shit’s just like it was in 1987, it’s almost 20 years later, 2007. Then it was hair metal, not it’s emo shit. Now, just like then, Axl Rose is gonna be the savior. Mark my words. The only person talented enough and ballsy enough to risk everything to follow his vision of GNR should be. 3-6-07. If you’re a true music fan that date xcites you!

Prophet | 12/28/2006, 5:53 pm EST

To clarify, I believe in the “new” GNR so much because I saw them live numerous times and the blew me away every time. Check out these two new demo GNR songs and honestly tell me you’re not impressed.

It is in all sober, serious, thoughtful concern that I strongly and wholeheartedly believe James Brown deserves the next Rolling Stone cover after the coming ‘My Chemical Romance’ cover, just in the same fashion as you did for George Harrison. If George Harrison got the cover of your magazine with only the Rolling Stone title at the top, after he died, I’m convinced that James Brown’s enormous stature in American Rock N’ Roll deserves the honor of the cover of Rolling Stone, without anything else but the Rolling Stone title at the top. Please Rolling Stone, I strongly, strongly, STRONGLY urge you to consider scrapping – or merely postponing – your plans for the next cover in favor of honoring James Brown for the towering music figure he is. If, after all of his accomplishments and his hard work, and his given place in the realm of Rock N’ Roll, he doesn’t get the cover of Rolling Stone to himself, what other Rock N’ Roll entertainer’s death would better warrant such rare Rolling Stone cover treatment? I beg of you, as one who means sincerely to push a vital, objective consensus and reasonably significant request to put him on the cover. This is not a petty, or trivial request. I’m not stepping on toes or arguing with the others who have contributed their thoughts. I don’t know how influential this one post will be, or could be, or who at Rolling Stone will consider this very post to be enough reason, but I can’t think of a reason not to give The Godfather Of Soul The Cover. I’m not even a fan! I just believe it’s the only thing to do for James Brown, and for the next cover of Rolling Stone. Please, no borders, no 1933-2006, nothing but the title of your magazine and a classic shot of The Man Himself. Please, it is with great concern for what is right and honorable for any entertainer of his stature that I make this request. That is all. God rest his soul.

The United Kingdom | 12/29/2006, 11:52 am EST

The Who, one of the Holy Trinity of Rock n Roll elite (alongside the Beatles and The Rolling Stones) should make the cover.

The band was formed in 1961, invented the rock opera in 1969, became the loudest band in history in 1976 (thats right man o war your 121 dec of sound fails to The Who’s 136.9!!! And The Who have a boat load of classics – Won’t Get Fooled Again, Baba O’Riley, Behind Blue Eyes, Magic Bus, Pinball Wizard, My Generation, Who Are You, I Can’t Explain, I Can See For Miles, See Me, Fee, Me, Love Reign O’Er Me, How Many Friends and a hell of a lot more. Most of these are on the North American most air-played songs in history.

A vote for The Who, who just released their 13th studio album, Endless Wire which hit # 7 in the US and # 9 in the UK.

The Who have sold more than 200 million albums in their storied history. The number one live act in rock n roll just keeps getting better.

I say | 12/29/2006, 12:59 pm EST

Garbage should have gotten a cover. They’ve been around forever, overcame obstacles to get the band back together after a huge hiatus, have a dedicated following and Shirley Manson rocks. I can’t see how Fiona Apple and Tori Amos can get press but Manson can’t in RS.

Everyone else has great choices too.

I’m not too ashamed to admit that I like listening to the Fergie cd. It is dumb, mindless bubblegum pop for long rides or workouts but giving her a cover? I don’t know if she deserved that when there are so many other, more talented people who could have graced the cover in a more meaningful way.

DETACHED OBSERVER | 12/29/2006, 2:11 pm EST

Even though it wasn’t that big of a story in terms of what Rolling Stone deems as important. The Trey Anastasio bust picture was true entertainment, sadly enough. Also, someone who deserved a cover in addition to Syd Barrett was Arthur Lee. He should have gotten a cover too.

The Who should get a Rolling Stone cover – Every other major magazine has featured them this year on the cover , like Mojo, guitar player, guitarist etc, but not Rolling Stone, bring credibility to your magazine and feature The Who. Forty million Who fans cant be wrong.

To the person that said they have 200 million albums sold, you are very close, and that number is just for the USA and the UK. Other countries added to the mix puts the number up around 300 million. Now if we just take the 200 million # that puts them behind the Beatles and maybe Elvis.

Nigel, I love the Who too but about those record sales…The Who have been certified for sales of 20 million albums in the U.S. That is good but there are over 100 acts ahead of them. The rock and roll heavyweights of record sales are the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, each with U.S. sales well in excess of 100 million albums and worldwide estimates of between 300 and 500 million for each of those enormous bands. As I said, I love the Who but their sales are not remotely in the leage of Led Zeppelin or The Beatles. Go to RIAA if you doubt me.

Syd Barret certainly deserves a cover. His influences in early Floyd alone should deserve such an honour, let alone it be pothumously.Syd fought his demons alone, maybe in death he deserves to have some help from those who enjoyed and frespected his work.Time to dump the girly shit and stuff that makes prepubescent little boys drool.pay homage to those that made you the mag you once were,,,cutting edge and balls to the wall.
