To kick off our week of Covers We Didn’t Do in 2006, we’re giving Mr. Claus his moment in the spotlight. Who else should have gotten the Rolling Stone cover this year…Jay-Z? Metallica? Dick Cheney? Send in your votes…we’ll debut a new one every day this week.

Jory | 12/25/2006, 3:09 am EST
I think there should have been a tribute issue for Syd Barrett. He was a genius, and deserved more than a page to commemorate his life.
Supersonic | 12/25/2006, 3:42 am EST
How about Noel Gallagher from Oasis? The band released its first ever “greatest hits” album, Stop the Clocks, although they called it a retrospective of what they (Noel, really) since their debut in 1994. The album is actually good considering that it’s not all singles or even top hits, but B-Sides as well that are considered fan favorites in live gigs. I think it’s worth giving them some spotlight in America. It’s not mentioned in mainstream media outlets, but their attendances are very good when they tour here in the States and the following remains strong despite what critics say. If you haven’t heard the whole greatest hits album, give it a shot. A lot of people who only heard Wonderwall or Champagne Supernova may learn why this band is gigantic around the world.
Blinked | 12/25/2006, 3:45 am EST
Maybe not a cover, but a long depth article on the break-up of Blink-182. It’s an interesting rock story. I know Rolling Stone has run some interviews and articles on the dilemma, but something more involving for the fans and readers. A lot of the story is now out, but I feel that Rolling Stone could help shed even more light if any left. Both +44 & AVA are doing their thing, but I bet sometime in 2008 we’ll see a new Blink record once they (or Tom) get over everything.
Bolt Fan | 12/25/2006, 3:53 am EST
I know Rolling Stone hasn’t jumped full swing into sports coverage, but since the mag has expanded over in its history from music and movies to politics, why not a cover story on the great LaDainian Tomlinson of the Chargers and his positive impact on modern athletes or even society? The guy has done great things off the field in charity work and is a very humble athlete with a strong work ethic. I good example for everyone, but for kids the most.
Anonymous | 12/25/2006, 4:33 am EST
A Tool cover would have been nice. And even a NIN one.
Sheena | 12/25/2006, 7:30 am EST
How about CBGB? We all know the great music and people that came out of here. Television, The Ramones, Blondie, The Talking Heads to name a few. Without them does U2 even exist.
Anonymous | 12/25/2006, 8:07 am EST
I completely agree with Jory-Syd Barrett cover and tribute issue. What a shame it didn’t happen!
midevil | 12/25/2006, 8:08 am EST
Whooops, that anonymous was from me.
Peter Walsh | 12/25/2006, 8:21 am EST
How about a Prison Break cover, maybe with the brothers on the cover??
Peter Walsh | 12/25/2006, 8:22 am EST
I have another one, the hottest girl out there, Jenn Sterger, get her on your cover, she is smoking.
B-Rett | 12/25/2006, 9:36 am EST
Syd B.
J | 12/25/2006, 9:47 am EST
Brian Eno.
Will G. | 12/25/2006, 9:54 am EST
Tenacious D made a glorious comeback, and proved that they are funnier then most of the comedians out there, and make better music than a lot of bands out now. Where is there cover?!
Alex | 12/25/2006, 10:03 am EST
I think Tool again defied expectations, they deserved a cover. But…it probably would be really hard to get them for an interview..so whatever.

Beck, Thom Yorke. Both had albums this year — good ones.

abandonedstation | 12/25/2006, 12:18 pm EST
although hindsight’s still 20/20, it would have been nice to see the godfather of soul make the cover.
-Heey! I don’t feel good! Nanananana…
-Dy-ing in Ah-mer-i-ca!
-Say it loud, I dead and I’m proud!
The best one (that I admit I didn’t come up with): Papa’s got a brand new body bag
RedSG | 12/25/2006, 12:34 pm EST
How bout all the legends who’ve passed this year? Syd Barrett, Billy Preston, and of course, the latest, James Brown. R.I.P. all of them, they were all so great, so much better than anything that has come out the last few years.
bloodzilla | 12/25/2006, 1:30 pm EST
tv on the radio and the yeah yeah yeahs both deserved covers. oh, well. at least they got spin covers.

Axl Rose and the new GNR had a pretty good year
Craig | 12/25/2006, 2:30 pm EST
AXL and NEW GNR had a pretty big year! Suprised by the amount of good reviews they got I went to see them and had to go back again they were so good!A cover for Axl would have been well deserved. Maybe next march with the release of the cd…maybe.
helvetian2003 | 12/25/2006, 2:49 pm EST

john frustiante
Donald Gibson | 12/25/2006, 3:18 pm EST
Tom Waits…2006 saw the release of Orphans, a stellar box set, and a rare tour. This was, most likely, Tom Waits’ most accessible year of his career.
Ale | 12/25/2006, 3:44 pm EST
syd barrett,definitely!
martino | 12/25/2006, 4:01 pm EST
Dean and Gene Ween
Justin | 12/25/2006, 4:04 pm EST
Definitely Oasis.
It would’ve been better in 2005, though, when Don’t Believe the Truth came out and was their biggest success since Be Here Now.
I gotta agree with Supersonic down there, though.
tim | 12/25/2006, 4:38 pm EST
axl rose
Slashed from the Roses | 12/25/2006, 4:52 pm EST
I don’t get why people want Axl Rose on the cover. Does he deserve his spot in rock history, of course, but let’s all be honest, with the new album coming out or not, will it truly be the same? I’ve heard the live shows are good if not great, but I have a problem with Slash not in the line-up. Could you imagine if Keith Richards was not in the Rolling Stones, or Joe Perry not in Aerosmith, or God forbid it if they were still around, Paul McCartney or John Lennon not in the Beatles? It’s just not the same. But to be fair, if Chinese Democracy does see the light of day, I’ll give it a shot.
roseonathorn | 12/25/2006, 5:20 pm EST
Either Syd Barret or Death Cab for Cutie. Probably, Death Cab for Cutie, they’ve had such a huge year coming into the critical spotlight
Space Pen | 12/25/2006, 5:30 pm EST
the killers deserve their own cover for once!!!!!!
ken vail jr. | 12/25/2006, 5:34 pm EST
it has to be JAMES BROWN next issue..he’s one of the most influential artists ever….even if he was a bit of a flake in recent years.
Qjam | 12/25/2006, 6:00 pm EST
It’s gotta be the greats that have passed….Syd,Billy,James….b ut also, let’s not forget the likes of Ahmet that helped alot of the greats get there.
Dan | 12/25/2006, 6:46 pm EST
again, I think it has to be axl and the new gnr because it is so controversial…because he is taking a household name and changing it…for better or worse, love or hate, put them on the cover and let’s get that new album on march 6th
me | 12/25/2006, 8:08 pm EST
wow. that cover with santa on it is the epitome of gay.
Better America Now | 12/25/2006, 8:12 pm EST
How about Barack Obama? For a politician he seems to be a decent human being (although they tend to get uglier as the times go by). For all we know, he could make a good run for the White House in 2008 if he can get past Hilary Clinton (difficult, but possible). His book feels honest and he comes across as someone who is willing to address and fix the issues that continue to plague America like crime, health care, corruption, and discrimination. Let’s hope to a better America sooner than later though.
john | 12/25/2006, 9:00 pm EST
AXL ROSE….im talking 1992 in depth interview style…..
Ragman | 12/25/2006, 10:22 pm EST
Tool definitely should have been on a RS cover. They released their first album in 5 years and it lived up to the hype!
Mike27 | 12/25/2006, 10:23 pm EST
yes Metallica
Bring Chinese Democracy | 12/25/2006, 10:33 pm EST
Axl Rose on the cover of Rolling Stone? Been there, done that. But please, bring this record now! Fans have waited too long for it, and it will go down as the most hyped album of all-time along with Oasis’ Be Here Now and Metallica’s St. Anger.
Tooled | 12/25/2006, 10:35 pm EST
I thought Tool was one of those bands that didn’t like to be in the public eyes, but preferred that their music be the main focus? That’s probably why they won’t be on the cover of Rolling Stone, it’s too mainstream for them.
PeteHagen | 12/25/2006, 10:38 pm EST
Ghostface Killah put out the two best hip hop albums this year. He’s the most consistent cat out of all the Wu Tang Clan. Put him on the cover and stop blowing Britney and Lindsey and Paris and all these coochie flappers!
schockyourself | 12/25/2006, 11:05 pm EST
Britney’s sausage wallet.
schockyourself | 12/25/2006, 11:07 pm EST

WE WANT AXL!!!!
george | 12/25/2006, 11:51 pm EST
axl + chinese democracy = saving popular music hopefully
so id say a cover would be cool
Guns N ?'s | 12/26/2006, 1:14 am EST
To George,
The real equation is axl-slash=no more Guns N Roses, divided by Chinese Democracy=doesn’t live up to the hype.
Mike27 | 12/26/2006, 1:59 am EST
To Guns N ?’s
The real equation is
Chinese Democracy = better than most of the shit you listen to.
john | 12/26/2006, 3:15 am EST
Axl Rose hands down…I already know that next year you will have at least 10 covers of people who arent half as deserving as Axl, so you might as well put Axl on the cover at least once…
Dan | 12/26/2006, 3:40 am EST
Jerry Lee Lewis put out what is probably his best record in 40+ yrs, and he has to have enough stories to fill two cover stories, so I think that boat was missed.
-And as a side note, I don’t think Tool has any desire to be on the cover of Rolling Stone, or any other major mainstream magazine for that matter.
nameless | 12/26/2006, 3:45 am EST
axl rose he’s done so much he toured in europe, he tourin in the U.S. as we speak, he got in a fight with tommy hilghfiger, and he’s played some stuff from the chinese democracy
album.

The Dixie Chicks. They have had an amazing year, with their album, the tour (which didn’t go as well as planned, but was still a success), and the movie “Shut Up and Sing”. I was really hoping I’d see them on the cover this year.
August | 12/27/2006, 8:50 am EST
Oasis deserve it, or at least an interview from Noel. He is one of the greatest interviews in rock. Just read or listen to some of his stuff. Everything out of his mouth either gets him into trouble, or makes people laugh. Plus, he’s been around long enough to see what has come and gone. Plus Oasis last album DBTT sold very well, with a sold out American tour at venues such as Madison Square Garden, Red Rocks and the Hollywood Bowl. What else do they have to do to get a cover.

Raconteurs?
Queens of the Stone Age?
Black Keys? Kings of Leon? Wolfmother?
Minus the Chili’s and Eddie Vedder, I can’t recall anything that was less than 20 years old showing up on your cover. How about any form of modern rock?
By the way, expect coal next year (the fat man knows)
Tyson | 12/29/2006, 5:17 pm EST
Axl will definitley be on the cover when Chinese Democracy is about to be released. I for one, can’t fucking wait!!

rsreader | 12/30/2006, 11:33 am EST
Beth Hart on the cover…
Mili | 1/2/2007, 7:54 am EST
Excuse me,but would you tell me why Mr.Rose is on the cover of Rolling Stone with so ugly face?!I don’t belive, that a person, who had a face and a body like this – http://image.blog.livedoor.jp/ scotty_jungle999/imgs/5/4/5472 8b9b.jpg – could looks like Axl on the cover now!
And about Guns…well,I think, that Guns N ?’s is right – Axl can’t do a real music without Slash, and Slash also needs Axl for his projects! But on the other side,I really want to hear the “Democracy”,because I’ve heard some of the songs and they weren’t so bad!I like “The Blues”,”I.R.S.” and “Better” – one of my favourite!…
So,in conclusion,I hope we will enjoy “Chinese Democracy” this year!I hope so!…
Mili | 1/2/2007, 7:55 am EST

RS should put a characiture of Britney Spears,Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton with the headline:
Panty-Hoes! On a more serious note, just put Gwen Stefani on the cover again or Ciara or maybe Chris Brown or Ludacris…I was also thinking the 2006 Dreamgirls.
Shel | 1/2/2007, 7:33 pm EST
3 Doors Down or Def Leppard

Why weren’t The Midnight Renewal on the cover? Or Mr. Lif?
jenny | 1/8/2007, 8:45 pm EST
