Weekend Rock List: Best Karaoke Songs

12/22/06, 3:16 pm EST

KaraokeThe holidays mean a profusion of cheesy sweaters, iced sugar cookies, “It’s a Wonderful Life” played in a constant loop on every major television network, and that time-honored tradition, the Holiday Party. For good or for bad, recent years have seen a glut of karaoke-themed holiday fetes and chances are that if you go to even a fraction of the shindigs you’re invited to, at least a couple will feature friends, family, co-workers and total strangers singing Top Forty hits in various stages of inebriation. There’s a fine art to selecting the song that best showcases your vocal talent (or disguising your dearth of said talent). Here’s our definitive list of the all-time best karaoke songs. Share your horror and/or glory stories — and remember to sing from the diaphragm.

  • “Don’t Stop Believing,” Journey
  • “Since U Been Gone,” Kelly Clarkson
  • “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Bon Jovi
  • “Sweet Child O Mine,” Guns N’ Roses
  • “Like a Virgin,” Madonna

Hallowed be thy Name….duh

Joey | 6/16/2009, 3:18 am EST

also, stones, killers, beatles, kinks, Bowie is kind of personal for me.

Rappers Delight is even longer than Bohemian Rhapsody. Paranoid Andorid is absurdly long. Is anyone else completely bored with Hotel California?

Joey | 6/16/2009, 3:10 am EST

The *ahem” best karaoke songs Rolling Stone provides are in fact merely the most popular. We always seem to confuse what’s popular and what is great.

The following songs should be dead and buried.

1. Picture
2. Paradise by the Dashboard Light
3. Sweet Caroline
4. Before He Cheats
5. Redneck Woman
6. Here for the Party

Now if you have the ability to crank out some Phil Collins, Heart, or Fleetwood Mac you will have the audience on your side. Moving songs are really the most entertaining.
Some people like to hear what they haven’t before in awhile. A lot of people (from small towns mostly) go to karaoke and think nothing of hearing the same 50 songs done over and over as a sort of ritual.

Stairway to heaven - led zepplin if you can sing this song on stage and do it wrll, youll be the talk of the night, trust me!

Deanna | 5/30/2009, 4:35 pm EST

I like to do Blue by LeAnn Rimes. I’m pretty good at it though. It depends on how I’m feeling too - if I feel like people think I’m showing off I won’t do it.

graysngr | 5/14/2009, 6:05 pm EST

Walkin in Memphis by Mark Cohn. I’ve done it in a house full of young people that prefer rap and hip-hop and they went nuts.

; - ) | 4/22/2009, 10:16 am EST

i fail to see how these are the best Karaoke songs, yes the majority oar classics… but in my book what makes a great karaoke song is the combination of difficulty as well as fan appreciation…

i always get impressed by those who can to the really fast paced songs or the songs with a huge disparity with high notes and low notes…

my personal favorites that can i “NAIL” (thx Teri Chicken and Beef Stew)
Sold - John Michael Montgomery
Black - Pearl Jam
The Proclaimers - I’m Gonna Be (1,000 miles)
Roxanne - Police
anything by Three Days Grace, Nickelback and Puddle of Mud.
not to mention the occasional Neil Diamond…

jrksun | 4/18/2009, 11:17 pm EST

Oh yeah….. if you want to be the MAN that the ladies want to take home… I heavily heavily suggest “Most Beautiful Girl” by Flight of the Cochords.

jrksun | 4/18/2009, 11:14 pm EST

Badfish by Sublime. Get’s the ladies dancing, it’s the easiest song ever and it’s short!

However, if you want short easy and more energizing… any Ramone’s song will do and “I wanna be sedated” is the song that is perhaps the most fun. Ba ba ba ba b-ba ba ba ba… I wanna be sedated!!!

danny idol | 4/11/2009, 9:56 pm EST

Gregg- there is a karaoke bar in Brussels one block away from the Radisson SAS hotel (near La Grand Place), there is guy there who sings unchain my heart even better than joe cocker… cheers to you and to joe cocker..

danny idol | 4/10/2009, 7:51 pm EST

Buster Poindexter - Hot Hot Hot!!

Gregg | 4/10/2009, 12:06 pm EST

Here are three that I have not seen elsewhere:

“Unchain My Heart” by Joe Cocker
“Move It On Over” by George Thorogood and the Destroyers
“Pink Cadillac” by Bruce Springsteen

Teri Chicken and Beef Stew | 3/21/2009, 2:10 pm EST

I love to go to bars and do karaoke. I don’t seem like I would be able to sing so when I get up and NAIL Jack and Dianne people start paying attention.
I love to follow that up with a little Mambo #5 to get the girls dancing, then I’ll do Heaven by Los Lonely Boys. Depending on the crowd and the mood I might do a little Walking in Memphis or The Way You Do the Things You Do by UB-40. If it’s an older crowd I might do Light My Fire and if it’s a counrty crowd I might do Thunder Rolls. I just recently found a place that has Crazy by Seal. I will admit I kinda messed that one up but, give me some time and I’ll NAIL that one too. Crazy Bitch usually gets any crowd going too….Smooth by Rob Thomas is a good get up and dance song. I’ll also sing She’s Like the Wind by Patrick Swayze but one of my favorites is I’ll Be by Edwin McCaine. I also like to sing Cherry Bomb by John Mellencamp. Bob Marely’s Stir it up is always a crowd pleaser or No Woman No Cry….
All I can say is people that get up and sing, no matter how bad you sound, unless like one person said before, unless your just piss ass drunk and slurring, I give you all credit because it’s not an easy task getting up in front of strangers and singing.
Props to all karaoke singers.

jacked up | 3/11/2009, 3:55 am EST

zz-top Sharp dressed Man
Bon Jovi Dead or Alive
That country song about the beagle Red

Jonny | 3/5/2009, 4:27 pm EST

I gotta say the fruits always work it for me-

George Michael- Faith, Freedom ‘90, Everything She Wants

Prince- Darling Nikki, Lil red corvette, kiss

and of course the Jewish Elvis-
Neil Diamond- Cracklin’ Rose, Coming to America

Some other aces in the hole-
Supertramp- The Logical Song
The Darkness- I believe in a thing called love

KATE | 2/26/2009, 2:21 am EST

“It’s Oh so Quiet”- Bjork is the most fun Karaoke song to do, do not attempt it if you aren’t willing to commit to it. Know your audience as well, if it isn’t a lively place people wonder why you are screaming indoors.

mike tv | 2/23/2009, 11:51 pm EST

at a medium pace - adam sandler

danny idol | 2/8/2009, 4:35 pm EST

Du Hast!
My Way- sex pistols version…

J | 1/30/2009, 9:25 am EST

I sing karaoke every Thursday night at a local bar. I’m a girl but I sing just about anything. I’m pretty good and I get requests for a few songs in particular. They are:

Edge of Seventeen and Gold Dust Woman - Stevie Nicks (these are songs that the KJ always wants me to do)
I’m The Only One and If I Wanted To - Melissa Etheridge
Give Me One Reason - Tracy Chapman
Human Touch, Tunnel Of Love, Glory Days, Born To Run - Springsteen
American Girl and Even The Losers - Tom Petty
Anything by Bonnie Raitt
I also do a lot of old soul and blues which the crowd really likes, stuff like Mustang Sally, Dancing In The Street, etc.
And then there’s always classic rock, The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, etc.
I try to stay away from what I call ‘over-done’ songs. I try to pick things that I’ve never heard anyone else do. And the crowd likes that too.

good ones | 1/23/2009, 10:15 am EST

I need a Hero - Bonnie Tyler
and Zoot Suit Riot - cherry poppin’ daddies always gets the crowd involved

Steve | 12/20/2008, 11:30 pm EST

3 Doors Down - Here Without You….seems to be song that goes over very well with the crowd for me. Most of the Stones stuff too is always a crowd pleaser.

britany johnson | 12/7/2008, 5:54 pm EST

Stevie Wonder is the best he sing so go.

Janet | 12/7/2008, 11:24 am EST

This is a good list - I hadn’t thought about some of these before. I did notice a complete lack of Dolly - 9to5 always is a hit. Also, for the ambitious, We Built this City. For a group of ladies, Respect or I Will Survive are always good choices!

gspa | 12/4/2008, 12:08 am EST

Just about anything by Dr. Hook
Freakin at the freakers ball - classic fun
Cover of the Rolling Stone

danny idol | 10/17/2008, 7:08 pm EST

you can leave your hat on!!!! (need some sort of joe cocker voice, though)

Bowlem over | 10/10/2008, 1:39 pm EST

I just did my “first” song… it was:
James Otto - “Just got started lovin’ you” The women loved it! I guess I sang it ok…. it’s harder than it looks!

melissa | 10/4/2008, 3:04 pm EST

The first song I ever sang was “criminal” by Fiona Apple. After I realized how boring I was(I have no talent) I switched music. Now I sing the Following:

1) camel toe by Fannypack(always gets a laugh
2) Rehab by Amy whinehouse
3) one week by barenaked ladies
I find that the more fun you are to watch, the less it matters if you suck!

Jan | 10/1/2008, 8:49 pm EST

My first nite at karaoke i did Springsteen’s Glory Days. The crowd LOVED it!

snowmaster5000 | 9/22/2008, 12:46 pm EST

My first time into a Karaoke bar the KJ handed me a microphone and pushed me on stage. I thought it was the custom or something when entering a karaoke bar so I just went along with it. Next thing I know I was singing Frosty the Snowman… in October.

I like…
Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffet
Easy - Lionel Richie
New York - Frank Sinatra
Let Her Cry - Hootie & the Blowfish
Tiny Dancer - Elton John
Cemetery Gates - Pantera
Fuel - Metallica
Anything by Bowie or Kermit the Frog

emo songs (rarely)
All By Myself - Eric Carmen
Without You - Harry Nilsson

Johnny Rowe | 9/9/2008, 4:22 am EST

Wham! - Club Tropicana
Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love

My boyfriend is an excellent singer and rips up:

Black Betty - Spiderbait
Take it Easy - The Eagles (though this is a song practically any vocal talent could do)
Tribute - Tenacious D (he does do this with his best mate though)
Bad Moon Rising - CCR
Amazed - Lonestar
Hanging by a Moment - Lifehouse
Better - The Screaming Jets
Better Man - Robbie Williams.

For the less confident:
Smooth - Santana and Rob Thomas

Wonderwall - Oasis
Throw Your Arms Around Me - Hunters & Collectors

For the Girls
Black Velvet - Alannah Myles
I Wanna Dance With Somebody - Whitney Houston
I Touch Myself - The Divinyls
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes (cliche, I know, but definitely a winner)
Total Eclipse of the Heart - Bonnie Tyler

Steph | 3/6/2008, 11:15 am EST

Ladies, please don’t sing Evanescence, Alanis Morrisette, Sarah McLaughlin, Jewel, Dido, or any other boring girly crap. It’s mind-numbing, no one will pay attention and it won’t even be fun for you.

Pick something interesting, upbeat. Try to have some fun…

4 Non Blonds- What’s Going On
Gretchen Wilson- All Jacked Up
Alanah Miles- Black Velvet
Carrie Underwood-Before He Cheat
Letters To Cleo- Cruel To Be Kind
Janis Joplin- Bobby McGee

Genghis | 3/5/2008, 2:02 pm EST

I personally think Love Shack, Bohemian Rhapsody, Paradise by the Dashboard Light, and anything from Grease should forever be banned from karaoke. They are butchered 9 times in 10.

A few good ones that haven’t been mentioned (depending on your voice):

Dave Matthews Band - Ants Marching
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush
Evanescence - Bring me to Life
Cab Calloway - Minnie the Moocher
Green Day - Holiday

megan&kim | 2/12/2008, 8:38 pm EST

mmm bop.
duh.

Jennie | 2/6/2008, 3:29 am EST

I work at a bar as security in Shreveport, Louisiana and I have a hilarious karaoke story. Year before last around Christmas we were all at the bar on karaoke night and there was probably a hand full of folks there. As I was walking out Andy Dick and his 2 assistants walked in. I had to turn around and walk back in. By the time I got back in, he was on the mic and started wailing to “Life in the Fast Lane” by the Eagles. He was adlibbing the crap out of the song and for some ODD reason NO ONE had a cell phone with a camera on them! Anyways, we ended up throwing him out for grabbing dude’s crotches and stuff.

BPPUPQCHFHAMELB | 1/31/2008, 10:33 am EST

I think that recognizability is essential in karaoke songs. You measure a singer on three things: talent, song choice, and presentation. You only need two of the three to be a karaoke all-star.

“Runaround” Blues Traveler
“Harder to Breath” Maroon 5
“Hard to Handle” The Black Crowes
“Mr. Jones” Counting Crows
“What’s Going On” Four Non-Blondes
“Living on a Prayer” Bon Jovi

jassui | 1/31/2008, 4:57 am EST

queen - “don’t stop me now” is by far my all-time favorite.

the beatles - “hey jude” is fun too.

Sarah | 12/30/2007, 1:07 pm EST

These aren’t the most popular ones but if you like singing give them a try, they’re super fun:

Bowie - Life on Mars, Ziggy Stardust, Modern Love, Fashion — all soooo fun

Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody

Abba - Fernando, Thank You for The Music

Tiffany - I Think We’re Alone Now

Janis Joplin - Bobby Mcgee

MC Hammer - 2 Legit 2 Quit

All songs everyone knows but forgets about until you sing them and blow their minds.

I am a girl and I pulled off Bohemian Rhapsody well enough to have a bunch of lovely men come up to me with compliments…or was it the bikini I was wearing, heh, jus’ kidding.

karaoke snob | 10/18/2007, 4:48 pm EST

I’m a karaoke regular and here are my biggest pet peeves:
-Bohemian Rhapsody (no matter what circumstances, it does NOT sound good)
- Picture (sheryl crow and kidrock)
- “group” karaoke. It sounds like nothing but chaos amplified by a couple of microphones. It’s irritating for anyone who isn’t up there with you.
- any rap if you aren’t absolutely fucking positive you can keep up
- any song longer than five minutes is no fun at karaoke

Karaoke isn’t funny when someone is wasted and slurring. Ever.

ADVICE | 10/15/2007, 9:59 pm EST

UGH - PLEASE *DO NOT* SING BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY — IT’S 10 FUCKING MINUTES LONG AND BEYOND PLAYED OUT. NO ONE CAN SING LIKE FREDDIE MERCURY AND PEOPLE JUST SHOULDN’T TRY IT. TEDIOUS!

KJSheDevil | 9/13/2007, 5:21 pm EST

I Host A Karaoke Show In Elk Grove, California And I See A Lot Of Hilarious Things. My Favorite Song To Sing Is:
I Touch Myself - The Divinyls. (always gets the crowd going)

Here Are A Few NOT To Sing:
Any Shania Twain Song!
All I Wanna Do - Sheryl Crow
Picture - Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow
Any Rap Song If You Don’t Know The Words! Trust Me, You Can’t Read Fast Enough And We Don’t Want To Hear It.

danny idol | 1/2/2007, 12:58 am EST

Boh rhaps is the “ideal” one but it is hard… No one has mentioned pour some sugar on me… So for a guy this should be the ideal list:
Boh rhaps
Sweet child o mine
Pour some sugar on me
You shook me all night long
Living on a prayer

These 1-have high tempo (imp for karaoke) 2-everyb knows these songs and guys 3-pour some sugar gets the ladies my friends

Other good candidates:
Rebel yell
Rapper’s delight
Erotic city
Walk this way

Maybes:
Old time rock n roll
You give love a bad name
Creep
Anythin anything

Hope this helps
DI

kisekileia | 1/1/2007, 7:05 am EST

Like everyone else, I’m wondering why Bohemian Rhapsody isn’t on the list.

“Baby Got Back” was pretty hilarious when a friend of mine was convinced to do it at his 30th birthday party, and would’ve been better if he’d been drunk enough to be willing to sing all the lyrics.

bob | 12/26/2006, 4:29 pm EST

if you want to throw people into a frenzy, especially at a bar, it’s got to be “Friends In Low Places.” Yes, I know, but it is.

Bruce R. | 12/26/2006, 3:24 pm EST

Mr. Roboto

This song has everything you need to give a great performance.

turn it up | 12/26/2006, 2:08 pm EST

Last time a friend & I did Meatloaf’s “Anything for Love” and brought the place down with crazy Morrissey-like microphone whipping and running in place during the instrumental breaks. An overlooked gem - U2’s Elevation: if the crowd handles the “wooohoo”, you’re golden.

matt | 12/26/2006, 10:38 am EST

make yourself the star of any karaoke joint by singing

Elbo Room in Peoria, IL is the way to go. Karaoke 7 nights a week. I sing there everynight…from Vanilla Ice, Snow (yes I know the words to Informer, Jimmy Eat World, Bowling for Soup, and Cheap Trick. It is great. Come and see us.

Johnny Hardcock | 12/23/2006, 9:07 pm EST

I once slayed with a drunken barroom rendition of “Time Warp”, followed, of course with “Sweet Transvestite.” I sang all the parts and fucked up my guitar.

Needless Productions | 12/23/2006, 6:40 pm EST

I’ve had the mic taken away from me by the bar owner for Bohemian Rhapsody.

The best kareoke song is either Asshole by Denis Leary (especially if someone knows the speech about the baby seals), anything by Meatloaf or What’s Up by 4 non-blondes.
Whats up is also the best campfire song.

I once sang “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen at a bar and brought the place down. I’m 5′8″ and weigh 115 pounds so it was pretty funny.

40oz to freedom - Sublime! who doesnt like singing about drinking while drinking?exactly

Jess B. | 12/22/2006, 11:25 pm EST

“Bohemian Rhapsody” is prime sing-along material. Who doesn’t love to sing the opera parts at the top of their lungs? Also fun: The Eagles’ “Hotel California,” The Police’s “Roxanne,” and pretty much anything by Jimmy Buffett.

Tenacious D’s “Tribute” is a good one, too. Especially, “NAY! WE ARE BUT MEN!”

mcache | 12/22/2006, 11:04 pm EST

Nice list - could these songs suck any more? How about the a song off the new Gewn Stefani collection?

MrTambourineman | 12/22/2006, 9:25 pm EST

a boy named sue - johnny cash
hard as nails and fun

BonJovi | 12/22/2006, 8:49 pm EST

Mr. Brightside by the Killers. Even funnier if the singer is totally wasted and didn’t even know all the words when they’re sober.

Christopher Palumbo | 12/22/2006, 7:19 pm EST

Sorry, my personal favorite AC/DC - You shook me all night long. There’s a song that gets everyone going.

Anonymous | 12/22/2006, 6:16 pm EST

Sweet Caroline, anyone?

r.e.m. - end of the world

CGEffect | 12/22/2006, 4:58 pm EST

“Love Shack”-The B-52s

If you want to show your range, sing this alone but I recommend you’re grouped to do this. Any song by Queen will do as well.

Alfred | 12/22/2006, 4:29 pm EST

I was also kicked out of a bar in Montana after my friend and I made “Margaritaville” our own. We did a rap version and I was the hype man. “Where the fucking salt shaka!?” The guy running the karakoe machine didn’t go for the “blue” language and had us removed.

Alfred | 12/22/2006, 4:26 pm EST

I have a few karaoke war stories. A few years ago during my birthday I got a bit too drunk and did a particularly heroic rendition of “Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi. I started throwing articles of clothing into the audience and kicked off my shoes into crowd. One of my Birkenstocks connected with my bosses right eye and he dropped like a sack of potatos. I ended up giving him a huge black eye. Luckily he has a good sense of humor.

rustyshackleford | 12/22/2006, 4:24 pm EST

Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

especially if you have a big group.
