WTF | 12/22/2006, 12:20 pm EST

This contest is crap, Couple is one of the worst bands I’ve ever heard, they don’t deserve to be on this list.

Confused~! | 12/22/2006, 12:24 pm EST

Yeah huge letdown on this list….what were you thinking….the only band I found from this contest was archives of and you didn’t even pick the most obvious of the bunch! Don’t be suprised if people run to the phones today cancelling their subscriptions!

Wolvaire | 12/22/2006, 12:25 pm EST

We are better than anything on this list. Back to the lab…

WTF #2 | 12/22/2006, 12:26 pm EST

Thank you for helping me prove to all my friends that Rolling Stone is not worth the paper it’s printed on.

Justin | 12/22/2006, 12:28 pm EST

Well, what do you want, it’s myspace, crap like Couple will always prevail.

Hmm | 12/22/2006, 12:29 pm EST

Decent list but none of these bands sound like they have any potential to grow into anything. Not that that’s bad but the next big thing has nothing to do with this list.

KevBrock | 12/22/2006, 12:29 pm EST

Sorry Rollingstone, but this is the worst contest ever, I’m gonna have to agree with these guys.

So I ask the Rollingstone readers if they think my song “Evil Fred” is better than everyone on this list:

http://www.myspace.co m/kevbrock

You staff at Rollingstone like awful music, time to cancel my subscription.

Kev

WTF #3 | 12/22/2006, 12:30 pm EST

Remember the bands that RS writes about as “new bands to watch” every year??? …Neither do I. Because none of them ever go anywhere. Congratulations to all the winners!!

The Dude | 12/22/2006, 12:31 pm EST

Rollingstone gets my vote for top magazine that runs BS Contests where everyone disagrees with the results.

john | 12/22/2006, 12:33 pm EST

I like the list. Some good picks on it. Of course, you’ll never agree with everything.

The Grubby 1 | 12/22/2006, 12:34 pm EST

AHHAHAH. You guys are just jealous your not on the list!

warchant | 12/22/2006, 12:34 pm EST

couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS! couple SUCKS!

Mike | 12/22/2006, 12:34 pm EST

Quit whining.

dan | 12/22/2006, 12:35 pm EST

why does everything have a lo-fi sound? Probably three or four cool bands on here but the rest is take it or leave it.

moosepig | 12/22/2006, 12:36 pm EST

THIS IS THE BEST LIST OF GHEY SECKS EVAR!!!!!111!!@!@!!

Ohio | 12/22/2006, 12:36 pm EST

Score one for State of Ohio.

The Dude | 12/22/2006, 12:37 pm EST

Why would I be jealous, I’m not in any of the bands, the simple fact is the contest was to find the worst bands, not the best.

Jessie Lilley | 12/22/2006, 12:39 pm EST

Ongratulations to all the winners. Well done! We’ll get you NEXT time.

Jessie Lilley | 12/22/2006, 12:40 pm EST

hmmmm….. that shoulda read

Congratulations!

WTF#234546 | 12/22/2006, 12:41 pm EST

Thankyou Rollingstone for reinforcing the fact that you know nothing about good music.

Hey | 12/22/2006, 12:42 pm EST

Hey WTF, what band are you in. I’ll go check em out.

The Grubby 1 | 12/22/2006, 12:42 pm EST

Actually…it is in a particular order….alphabetical…

Sour Grapes | 12/22/2006, 12:43 pm EST

Hooray for sour grapes!!

KevBrock1 | 12/22/2006, 12:43 pm EST

Um, I’m not jealous, all these songs are just Rollingstone magazines opinions and they just rushed through the contest, it was a big rush, they didn’t take their time to listen to the songs and I’m willing to bet they listened to each song submitted only once.

Knowing how Rollingstone write album reviews in the magazine, we know how they like crappy music. All they look for is pop music, nothing real.

Kev

WTF#234546 | 12/22/2006, 12:45 pm EST

sorry, I’m not in any of the bands

This contest was a huge letdown, thanks for ruining Christmas, Rollingstone.

Joseph Fletcher | 12/22/2006, 12:49 pm EST

mike | 12/22/2006, 12:49 pm EST

had this contest been up to the fans, we would have completely different results, but instead we let it up to sh*t interns and janitors of Rollingstone.

Wrong Reasons | 12/22/2006, 12:50 pm EST

LET’S HEAR IT PEOPLE!www.myspace.com/ thewrongreasons

Higgo | 12/22/2006, 12:52 pm EST

You all know that the only people who are even looking at this are nominees and freinds of people in the bands SO stop being such haters. If you hate the rolling stone so much why would you enter your band in the contest? slash why would you even check this list/

Hey | 12/22/2006, 12:53 pm EST

Are you saying that shit interns and janitors are incapable of knowing anything about music?

straightfatelover | 12/22/2006, 12:53 pm EST

Cough, Adam Bricks, Cough Cough

Ashley Wool | 12/22/2006, 12:54 pm EST

Hey, everyone below me! I have four words for you.

Quit.
Your.
Damn.
W hining.

And to Y-O-U, the most fabulous band on this list in my not-so-humble opinion, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! :-D

TAG | 12/22/2006, 12:56 pm EST

Yeah, I have to agree that you guys picked really lame bands, who all sound the same, use the same chord progressions, and just copy off of the mainstream bands of today. It was nice that you guys had the contest, though. It’s the thought that counts.

joe | 12/22/2006, 12:59 pm EST

top 25 shitiest bands on mysoace we should have known

Someone Who Matters | 12/22/2006, 1:02 pm EST

I just checked out Kev Brock’s music and it sucks. Someone who sucks that much should have no say as to who is good or bad, because Kev is deaf to good. But whatelse would you expect from a musician who pimps out his myspace page with banners of the new “Rocky Balboa” movie. Lame.

that guy | 12/22/2006, 1:05 pm EST

there are some great choices on this list. some i’m not so sure about, but it is definitely a matter of taste/preference and not quality. congratulations to Night Driving in Small Towns. i thought they were a sure thing from the beginning.

John- Vancouver | 12/22/2006, 1:10 pm EST

Best choice on your list without doubt is Shannon Hurley. Her voice and music is what music is suppose to be like, not the crap alot of “so called bands” play today. The people with good taste in music have made our choice heard loud and clear.

Matt | 12/22/2006, 1:10 pm EST

I agree with TAG and many other people on this board. It would be nice to have chosen different bands with different styles. It’s honestly all paint by lame number and predictable. Some folks need to realize that it’s ok to play a guitar solo (if they know how to) and really rock. Ok, rant over. Check please.

isabelle corey | 12/22/2006, 1:12 pm EST

This is awesome. Night Driving is one of the BEST!

just curious | 12/22/2006, 1:13 pm EST

considering the contest winners were just posted 50 minutes ago (12:13pm), how can people talk shit and say they’ve listened to all 25 songs in the span of:

Confused~! | 12/22/2006, 12:24 pm EST

Yeah huge letdown on this list….what were you thinking….the only band I found from this contest was archives of and you didn’t even pick the most obvious of the bunch! Don’t be suprised if people run to the phones today cancelling their subscriptions!

that’s 11 minutes! for 25 songs! did you even listen to the music, or are you just bitter fans? the latter, probably. listen to all music before you pass judgement.

oh, and black affair rocks.

Hey | 12/22/2006, 1:13 pm EST

I think it was also up to the variety of the submissions themselves. I’m just glad to see that Art of Chaos didn’t make it. We don’t need anymore retards dressed up in tight pants, wearing eyeliner and acting like they’re king shit of fuck mountain.

Tally | 12/22/2006, 1:14 pm EST

Is it just me or did everyone who had an original sound/talent lose?

This band should have won

For Tally: | 12/22/2006, 1:16 pm EST

Did you listen to all of the artists? Can you say personally that there was a wide variety of talent on display?

Danford | 12/22/2006, 1:16 pm EST

Ya know what this world needs? Some less hate’n and more love’n. Check out Band Marino, best unsigned Florida band around! Love you guys!

KevBrock2 | 12/22/2006, 1:18 pm EST

Anyone else care to comment and give me feedback on my “Evil Fred” song in a more polite and kind manner?

http://www.myspace. com/kevbrock

Does anyone else think that my song “Evil Fred” deserves to be on this list?

Kev

They're joking...right? | 12/22/2006, 1:19 pm EST

Ryan Marks Productions – “High Tide”—-sounds like a spoof of some other “real” artist..maybe?

mike | 12/22/2006, 1:21 pm EST

I’m just glad to see that bands with totally average people won. Most of the bands on the list are just some people trying to make some good music. Not the usual pile of egomaniacs.

DOTMIG | 12/22/2006, 1:22 pm EST

As an artist I feel let down. Rolling Stone as the critics, you cannot see what is in front of your eyes. It’s the story of our lives as working musicians. But when the going get’s tough, the tough get’s going. It could of, would of, should of, but it did’nt happen. DOTMIG released an arsenal not only a rock classic, but an icon image you can clearly see in the “Dive Bar” video & song of mainstream commercial Pop. It will be very hard for Rolling Stone not to notice DOTMIG, but I will be “back with a vengeance” but no offense towards the judges. That is the way I play my music.

UNC DROSTE | 12/22/2006, 1:22 pm EST

Where the hell is FIVESPEED! FIVESPEED! FIVESPEED! FIVESPEED!
FIVESPEED! FIVESPEED! FIVESPEED!, etc., etc, freakin’ etc!

Pookie | 12/22/2006, 1:23 pm EST

Congratulations to the winners,
but Jerzy Jung really should have been in there.

lovah | 12/22/2006, 1:24 pm EST

the best 25? ive never heard of any of them. check out close to home http://www.myspace.com/cth

yeah... | 12/22/2006, 1:24 pm EST

Just as I thought … “the best” had nothing to do with fanbase or all around appeal. It’s just their opinion so they can get more ‘weird people music’ out there like everything on this list. This contest was a let down

music lover | 12/22/2006, 1:29 pm EST

you made a huge mistake leaving out bryan scary. I’m shocked!

Evil Fred Sucks | 12/22/2006, 1:30 pm EST

Yeah, Evil Fred Sucks!

Blake | 12/22/2006, 1:31 pm EST

RollingStone.com isn’t worth the paper it’s not printed on.

Was it unpaid interns who put this list together?

happy | 12/22/2006, 1:33 pm EST

I actually just found out about locksley a few weeks ago and was surprised to see them on the list. i really like them and i’m glad they made it. oh and everyone needs to stop their bitching about how their band didn’t make the list. get over it. it’s just a casual contest. its not like any of them actually won anything.

Aries73 | 12/22/2006, 1:34 pm EST

I heard ESPN will do something similar:

Top 25 Single-A League Baseball Players.

WhynotEvilFred? | 12/22/2006, 1:35 pm EST

Kev Brock’s “Evil Fred” should have been on that list:

http://www. myspa ce.co m/kevbrock

Anyone else thinks “Evil Fred” should be on here?

YES | 12/22/2006, 1:35 pm EST

State of Ohio and Couple rule. Did anyone notice the connection that the album of the day is Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain and that there are a lot of sloppier/lo-fi bands on the list?

SexynLean | 12/22/2006, 1:37 pm EST

I say let the musicians be the judge’s for the Top 25. Put your own score card together, do not add any band that did not make the list. Give your POP or FLOP anyway you want. Leave it on my comments http://www.myspace.com/sexynlean so everyone can view. I will be the score keeper. SexynLean always does a great job, ask DOTMIG. He has kicked ass & is not going to judge any book by it’s cover until we all listen closely. We will act like Stone without acting like a Stone. This is not about why we did not make it. It is about being professional, but say & feel what you want, curse if you have to…but not too vulgar please. I am SexynLean you know what I mean. Let’s go boys & ladies, let’s kick some ass & start our own magazine & maybe we will call it SexynLean.

Derek | 12/22/2006, 1:38 pm EST

Where the hell is Frankie Castle?!?! Oh, here he is: http://www.myspace.com/frankiecastle

GREAT list | 12/22/2006, 1:39 pm EST

all these people spreading bad vibes are just jealous that their bands or friends bands didnt make the list… it doesnt mean that the ones that didnt make it arent good – give these bands a fair listen… i found a bunch of them to be pretty talented like ferns and y.o.u – i really dug watercolors by bill – lots of innovative musicianship going on there – cool harmonies

good luck to all everyone

pfft | 12/22/2006, 1:40 pm EST

or not

joe millionaire | 12/22/2006, 1:41 pm EST

good list…everyone that didn’t make the list, too bad. for everyone that keeps bitching: i wonder why you don’t get paid to have an opinion…oh, probably cos your opinion blows.

JoeBlow | 12/22/2006, 1:41 pm EST

I’m never disappointed in the Rolling Stone’s taste in music….. because I’m ALWAYS disappointed in the Rolling Stone’s taste in music. Of all the great indie bands on Myspace THIS is what you’ve come up with? I think you just went through and picked the ones with “sweet” names. Gimme a break guys.

John | 12/22/2006, 1:45 pm EST

Great Contest! It’s good to see another Atlanta band on the move. “Astro Junkie”, watch these guys, they are on the move.

Valhalla- | 12/22/2006, 1:53 pm EST

karmasutra for losers | 12/22/2006, 1:55 pm EST

it’s obviously that not many people nowaday listen to indie… always with the emo crap.. and hardcore bul*shit… couple sing very well… and congratzs to them.. after a long of hard work… there’s some ray of light after all… congratz…!!!

michael b | 12/22/2006, 1:56 pm EST

Where is Bryan Scary? I hope you guys at least made extra advertising money with all of the additionals hits. The music listed here is mediocre. blah blah. Once again RS has proved its irrelevance in the new non-corporate music world.

Tina | 12/22/2006, 1:57 pm EST

woah… lay off the xmas haterade people! if you’re not part of the solution… you’re part of the problem. these bands rock. if you don’t think so… pick up a guitar or mpc and try to do something better… which you probably wont

Sloaney | 12/22/2006, 1:57 pm EST

Quit your biatching!
The list includes some great songs and some crap songs. Just like radio.
I happen to like some ‘weird people music’ so maybe I’m a little biased.
Nonethless, yer all acting like babies.

Wicked | 12/22/2006, 2:02 pm EST

I just listened to 10 of the artist from the bottom up. Let me tell you there was only 1.5 that made the cut out of 10. If you think my friends & I would listen to that shit or buy that shit, you guys will be out of a job soon. All you did was get publicity & ruin your reputation. How long did it take you to get RSM to get a myspace site. Stick to the magazine & wait for people that are proven.

Jim | 12/22/2006, 2:03 pm EST

I agree that Kev Brock “Evil Fred” should have been that list.

http://www.myspa ce.co m/kevbrock

Why don’t you all try writing a song about a serial killer on the loose? Plus, Kev’s guitar playing is very impressive.

Mel | 12/22/2006, 2:09 pm EST

Bedtime for Toys song is killer! Thanks for the discovery

Boom Charin | 12/22/2006, 2:12 pm EST

Wow, this is like the rejects from X-Factor gone beserk, whats the big deal? Everyone thinks their great and has a king-kong sized monkey on their back when they don’t immediately get on the cover of Rolling Stone. You should be gratefull of the chance in myspace’s vat of crap.

http://www.myspace.com/boomcharin

RS is officially irrelevant | 12/22/2006, 2:13 pm EST

Rolling Stone has become officially irrelevant.

The very idea of rating myspace artists and that Rolling Stone is the one to do it is the antithesis of current music trends which is about free expression of variety outside mainstream pop.

I mean, what has RS most known for now? Following celebrity gossip and mocking music.

weird people music | 12/22/2006, 2:15 pm EST

Yeah, weird people music… people that couldn’t “make it” with their own band, so they decided to work for Rolling Stone. Now they live in Lofts and Studio Apartments and still dress like rock stars. Blazer jackets, sweat head bands, and aviator sunglasses, and always with their ipod. Their band didn’t make it because it was music nobody wanted to listen to, but that’s their taste in music so that’s what Rolling Stone puts out now.

claytowne | 12/22/2006, 2:16 pm EST

Don’t forget about the renaissance of grown folks music at claytownmuzic.com via myspace. Bring back the soul music!

NJBlondeMoments | 12/22/2006, 2:20 pm EST

Maybe if someone was smart in the music business they would listen to a few of these songs and see the potential in them like we do. After all, aren’t we the ones buying the CD’s and merchandise.

Congrats to all the bands in the top25!!! Especially b.o.s.c.h. You’re amazing!

k! | 12/22/2006, 2:21 pm EST

hmm well..i listend to all of these bands. All of them are a kind of special and that is good as it is. They doin their music. Don`t even care about music industries -just being artists- If you like it or not. All these Bands are excellent Artists. If i am a producer i would bring out an compilation with all of them , because it have to be done.
k! go on guys…you are not alone

Boom Charin | 12/22/2006, 2:22 pm EST

Why wouldn’t Rolling Stone do this? It seemed like a good idea when people wanted to be put up on the flimsy pedestal, now its all Rolling Stones fault and the worlds gone rotten? Boo-who! Write some more tunes, play more shows, thats your own reward.

er…

CHUCKY | 12/22/2006, 2:25 pm EST

Very happy to see KOLJA en COSMOBROWN in this selection!
They really deserve it!

Lovely Linda | 12/22/2006, 2:29 pm EST

Bedtime For Toys makes me smile.

Ohio | 12/22/2006, 2:30 pm EST

We challenge thee to a ROCK OFF!

Can I please ASK?? | 12/22/2006, 2:31 pm EST

RS, What made you pick these bands as the best? What was the criteria? I’d love some insight. Clearly, it wasn’t who had the most fans, or who has the most commercial viability, so what was it? I’m really not bitching just genuinely curious. Thanks,

Kaitlyn

Howard | 12/22/2006, 2:35 pm EST

Uh, maybe the criteria was who were the BEST BANDS. commercial viability and amount of fans do not determine an artist’s talent of quality of work. look at nickelback, creed, bon jovi. they all suck yet they sell millions of records and have undying legions of devoted fans.

jungleland | 12/22/2006, 2:38 pm EST

Y.O.U. !!!! What a great band from Atlanta! Good choice

dear howard | 12/22/2006, 2:39 pm EST

listen to what you just said

Where is Easy Silence?? Where is Chelsea Williams? Strange list indeed…

Glenn Case | 12/22/2006, 2:41 pm EST

I may not have made the top 25, and it was slightly disappointing to see that none of the artists I was rooting for made it either, but you guys really generated some excitement with this Best of Myspace contest.

So, Thank you.

ROCK!

DOTMIG | 12/22/2006, 2:49 pm EST

The Observer | 12/22/2006, 2:51 pm EST

MySpace listeners arent stupid. This contest was fun but really means nothing. That’s why bands like Five Times August get more hits than Rolling Stone. It’s actually Rolling Stone that’s looking for attention- not the bands. Keep your eyes on the prize- the fans.

k! | 12/22/2006, 2:57 pm EST

Howard i totally agree with you !
You are in music , for shure.
k!

Eric C. | 12/22/2006, 2:59 pm EST

Congratulations to the winners! But I’m a bit disappointed that my favorite myspace artist Matt Williams didn’t make the list. He got a lot of support on here. Check him out if you’re after some mellow rock with meaningful lyrics.

http://www.myspace.com/mat twilliamsonline

DOTMIG | 12/22/2006, 3:05 pm EST

RSM if you could not hear “Dive Bar” from down the street & see the video. What did u think of the rest of the album? The other 9 songs I have for you to listen to. I want to go toe 2 toe with the top 25 u picked. You must have missed something here. “Back with a vengeance” will challenge AC/DC’s “Back in black” anytime u want. My track “SexynLean” could not get any sexier & faster than an airforce jet. I call myself the Mig Fighter this track is the diamond in the rough. “333 River Street” if u can’t find that address I’ll give u a map. The song is kickin like Pele. 2007 will be fun I hold no grudges until I am done.

k! | 12/22/2006, 3:06 pm EST

what i really want to know..who of you intolerant people bought the Rolling Stone Magazine last Month ?
i bet one hand is enough for counting. I did, i will do because they are in music ! I read lots of magazines because -my mind- is open.
k!

k! | 12/22/2006, 3:11 pm EST

i also agree with -The Observer-

john | 12/22/2006, 3:12 pm EST

Fixer should have been on the list…myspace.com/fixer

Phillip | 12/22/2006, 3:12 pm EST

I like some of the bands on here, but my favorite is Miniature Tigers!!

Okay, if your mind is open I am the 2nd finger that read the magazine. DOTMIGS genres range from techno, dance, urban, pop rock & a slab of hard rock. Why don’t u just check it out for yourself. http://www.dotmig.com & http://www.myspace.com/dotmig & don’t forget his video “Dive Bar”, he has a remix of “Miami” that is in the vault & style that fits the image of something big waiting to happen. You can write back, we will be right here.

Thank you- Wicked

riiiiiight... | 12/22/2006, 3:20 pm EST

I like how a lot of you who are Pro Rolling Stone rely on the magazine for what’s “in” with music. But did you ever notice how much of the magazine is actually music related vs. how many paid advertisements take up the magazine? I counted 52 full page ads in an issue that was 104 pages. That’s NOT including the side bar ads either. For a magazine that knows a lot about music they sure know a lot about corporate sponsors too! Money can buy popular opinions, so don’t believe everything you read.

We’ve played some shows with this guy, and he’s amazing. Nice guy too. We found out not long ago that he used to be in the Polyphonic Spree. Seeing as how that link will break anyway, he calls his project Sweet Lee Morrow. I should have nominated him; he would have been on the list I bet.

Congradultions to Rolling Stone for finally taking on this challenge for myspace bands. They as usual regognize this is the future. As RS follower for years, thanks. I found several really up and coming bands. “Astro Junkie” was my favorite. Astro Junkie is a new, catchy band. Congradulations to them.

this contest was a major let down. i blame 2 things for the death of rock and roll; one is aerosmith teaming up with run dmc to bring shithop to a wider audience and the second is your magazine for selling out by advocating such shitty music over the last 30 years!!!! viva 1973!!!

Yawning | 12/22/2006, 8:25 pm EST

Holy crap. I listened to each band and… well… wow. What a dirge of mediocrity.
Well done Rolling Stone. You have proven what I already expected… you are a sold out, overblown corporate magazine with as much credability as George Dubya when it comes to knowing what good music is.

Jeri | 12/23/2006, 12:10 am EST

Oh yes. Pitchfork are the gods of music critics. Anything they say is absolute. Whatever indie prick. I don’t agree with everything on this list either but there are some good calls on it. RS isn’t always right but they’re not retards.

mike | 12/23/2006, 12:24 am EST

so it’s obvious some of you feel that there are certain bands that didnt make the top25 who you thought deserved to be on this list. there were alot of great bands who entered, and i’m sure there were more than just these 25 who were worthy to have the title as one of the best bands on myspace, but that doesn’t mean the bands who did make the list don’t deserve it, they are all great too or they wouldn’t be there. i know it was a competiton, but that competition is over now… so where is the camaraderie amongst the artists and music lovers? i like the idea of independant artists working together, helping and supporting each other, rather than tearing each other down with the ignorant self righteous banter i’ve been seeing. just give congratulations to all the winners and those recognized in the rounds, show your appreciation to rolling stone for taking the time to listen and give all of the bands who entered a chance, and that’s all. if you disagree with their decisions that’s fine, but hurting other bands is not the best way to support the band you like.

mike | 12/23/2006, 12:30 am EST

and congratulations Night Driving in Small Towns, you had my vote

mike | 12/23/2006, 12:57 am EST

one last thing… you shout mediocrity with the intention of hurting these bands and rolling stone, but who are you really hurting? if you support an indie band then you support indie music on a general basis, as a movement or whatever you want to call it. by undermining any facet of the promotion of indie music to the masses you are not only hurting these bands, but your band or the band you support.

URG | 12/23/2006, 12:57 am EST

The Truth | 12/23/2006, 2:56 am EST

Let’s keep this in perspective, everybody. If Rolling Stone were really good at discovering new talent, then they would be called “Rolling Stone Records” and be run by Clive Davis or Jason Flom or somebody like that. Although some of the bands chosen were very good (no doubt a shear stroke of luck on RS’s part), that’s not what they do. Rolling Stone is just a magazine; nothing more than glorified ambulance chasers, looking for the next bandwagon to jump on (in this case “MySpace” which gets far more eyeballs than RS’s magazine and website combined) or hardworking celebrities to exploit for their own gain by selling ad space online or in their magazine to corporate sponsors (none of which I can recall from following this contest- so apparently they’ve failed at that, too); a hippy-era publication that has been behind the curve of “what’s hip” for almost 30 years that targets aging baby-boomers that want to feel cool and hang on to their 1960’s & 70’s youth- the “MTV” of music magazine’s, if you will (and we all know how “cool” MTV is these days). Rolling Stone should give up on being some unofficial “A&R” department because they prove every year that they’re highly unqualified, too old, or too out-of-touch for the job. All they’ve managed to do is cause a lot of bickering between musicians and bands that are part of a community that is otherwise supportive of each other. My suggestion to Rolling Stone is that they stick to what they do best: being the “National Enquirer” of popular music and pop culture; keep selling over-priced ads that no one reads to corporate sponsors that think that RS is still really “cool” in the eyes of today’s youth; and continue to be the Tyrannosaurus Rex of a dinosaur print media culture that will, in a few short years, become extinct and be run over by the MySpaces, YouTubes, Googles and Yahoos of today- the very ambulances that they chase.

Bedtime for Toys | 12/23/2006, 2:57 am EST

WTC PWNED | 12/23/2006, 3:08 am EST

I really think they could have come up with a better list if they just picked names out of a hat. I agree with Steve: “Everything sounded to overproduced and fake.”

Are these the 25 best or the 25 blandest? Stick to printing ads and writin stories about Justin Timberlake. We can figure out what is the best.

JC | 12/23/2006, 5:02 am EST

oh oh, so much violence in some comments… well, if this contest gives a bigger audience to these bands, even those who lost (i’ve listen to sthem), it is ok to me. Would you prefer to see your demo in an A&R bin? We recorded and produced Kolja with almost no money, and if it gives pleasure to more people xith this contest, thanks RS. And even if i support Kolja, i also must say that Miniature Tigers are very very good!
Thanks for giving us such abig audience, it will help!

I have read the comments. To all of you that feel RS is an unimportant player in this newer electronic age, then why are yo boyhering to post all this BS on their site? It’s because they are a giant in the industry and always be because they as well, understand wher the market is and will dominate with their name and money. So if you don’t think their worthy take your comments back to your non listened to myspace site. My vote is “ASTRO JUNKIE”!!!!. It’s good to see a new, original and bold rock band with good musicians!!!

It is stupid to argue with yourself! All of YOU who are making negative comments about Rolling Stone are stupid. You should be excited that they are finally recognizing US (us), just as all the retail stores, etc. are. We all have our favorite bands. The groups selected in the Top 25 are not as important as Rolling Stone making the effort. Most of US want Rolling Stone to thrive and it is about time they got on the bandwagon of the rest of the world. Time Magazine just devoted its cover of the Man (person) of the Year to YOU and YOU are all of US. The real question is DOES ROLLING STONE have the Guts and intelligence to devote its cover to this contest? They need our business and we need their exposure.

mike jewell | 12/23/2006, 11:07 am EST

this contest definately did NOT cover the best of myspace… you left out ‘the outside world’… just because no one knows about them does mean they’re not the best!! just because they’re independent and don’t play the game doesn’t mean you can list the best myspace bands and leave them off… i’ll even prove it,… if you don’t think they’re the best band ever, they’ll quit! true story… take the challenge…

I love Bedtime for Toys! Great Pick!

Butch | 12/23/2006, 12:09 pm EST

There were some great bands in this contest and I don’t have a horse in this race. However, I was looking for a group that could make it passed your local gigs to the big time. I found a couple but the one that caught my interest most was the group “ASTRO JUNKIE” and here is why. The music is great, obviously professional musicians but it is their message that is most interesting. They are boldly singing about their anger with the things that happen to us everyday. As example, we all can relate to how it feels to have your girl dump you but their message is what I would really like to tell her. They are transforming the word anger into “positive realism” with some humor. Someone big will pick them up.

Come on Butch | 12/23/2006, 12:22 pm EST

I just gave Astro Junkie a listen at Butch’s recommendation. Not so good. Butch when you say you don’t have a horse in the race that doesn’t just mean your not in the band, it also means your brother can’t be in the band. Can’t really imagine how else you’d call a whiny song about breaking up with a girl “bold.” You should call up the radio a bunch of times and request their song…but with a different voice each time so they don’t know it’s you Butch. That would be original, just like your song.

me | 12/23/2006, 1:05 pm EST

i actually just gave an honest listen to the top 25. i won’t lie, most of the bands do have talent and entered a pretty catchy song. but the biggest joke on this top 25 is definitely ryan marks productions. which one of the judges knows that no talent ass clown? cause that’s the only reason i can come up with as to why he is on the list.

my ears hurt.. | 12/23/2006, 3:03 pm EST

this is sad… i listened to about half of these bands and i cant take another song.. and seriously, butch, wtf are you saying about astro junkie??? they have a great sound but all that crap about the deeper meaning of the song you said is so gay. their lyrics are lame and really overused. and the ryan marks song really sucks. this whole contest is like going to an abstract art gallery and looking at blobs of paint on a sheet of paper and calling it a million bucks. this music isnt worth what rolling stone is giving it, and honestly rolling stone isnt worth a pos these days either. theyd be better off spending their time on a top 25 britney spears songs and a statue of the black eye peas. seriously, myspace is for pop artists, and unsigned artists, and unsigned music is a beautiful thing. dont let rolling stone rub it in some S*** like they are.

I remember the Rolling Stone ‘Top 100 Guitarists of All Time’… when Ike Turner beat out Eddie Van Halen by 11 spots…. and Chet Atkins didn’t even make the list.

All Rolling Stone lists are totally nonsense… and this one is no exception.

As a matter of fact tell me the criteria and i’ll put together a list that will lay waste to this thing. No disrespect to the bands on the list. Many of them are very good. It’s just that they’re not the best bands on MySpace by a longshot. I’m disappointed with you guys…..(shaking my head)

Buck | 12/23/2006, 11:22 pm EST

Somebody for the love of god listen to Still Motion on Myspace. These kids are from Drexel Hill PA and the only reason theyre not on this list is because they didnt enter the contest. These guys are like 15 or 16 and they sound like theyve been playing together for years. The singer sounds at least 20, he’s got a very distinctive voice, and they two guitar-bass-drum setup busts out the classic rock/funk jams, often with rippling Beach Boy harmonies layered over some seriously tight instrumental work. If you only listen to one band from southeastern Pennsylvania this year, make it this one.

Butch | 12/23/2006, 11:52 pm EST

Answer to Comeon Butch. I deal with bands everyday and radio stations, just because you are earing impaired, don’t take it out on me. You obviously are intitled to your opinion their like assholes, everybody has one. I have no connection to ASTRO JUNKIE but they have some real promise. I base my opinion on a career of finding talent. What do you base yours on? I normally respond to real critics but you definetly arn’t one. You jerk.

e.m | 12/24/2006, 12:18 am EST

Thanks for picking Couple :)

Allison | 12/24/2006, 12:48 am EST

I agree with Butch. I live in L.A. and I am so tired of listening to the same old pre packaged bands and music. I checked out Asrto Junkie. Great rock band with a catcy hook. They are worth a listen Check them out yourself

Allison | 12/24/2006, 1:25 am EST

I can’t believe this site problem. It is adding spaces, deleting characters, etc. I am not doing this for Astro Junkie, it is now the principle of this damn site. If this works, type our comments in Word, copy and import it so you won’t look like an idiot. Again (last try) Astro Junkie link is http://www.myspace.com/astrojunkieatl .

Chris | 12/24/2006, 10:25 am EST

If a song’s quality is measured by whether it brings a smile to your face and feeling of “Yeah, dammit!” then Airborne Toxic Event’s “Wishing Well”, Band Marino’s “Every Time,” The Fancy Claps’ “Holly” and Y.O.U.’s “Break” are future classics in their right. Good choices all around, RS. I ain’t crazy about all of them, but radio stations across the country must be to not play most of these songs.

Lauren | 12/24/2006, 10:30 am EST

Wow,

I can’t believe how amazing the airborne toxic event is. Thanks for introducing us to such a talented group!

Wicked | 12/24/2006, 12:29 pm EST

Does Engineering play a factor in the contest? Almost all of the bands had poor engineering & producing… There are things flying around in these songs & drum tracks that where off beat. As an engineer I know what it takes to win a Grammy. You have to be on time percisely!!!

SexynLean | 12/24/2006, 12:38 pm EST

Hey Rolling Stone Magazine,

Do you think you can have a TOP 50 LIST, so we can give these cry babies another shot. The magazine has a TOP 50 list right?

DOTMIG is back again | 12/24/2006, 12:43 pm EST

Who is with me? Yaaaahhhhhhhhhhh

david h. chung | 12/24/2006, 1:03 pm EST

hate to say i told you so, but Ultra Sonic Edukators made the list and after listening to all the bands, they are clearly the best. bye for now.

Huh? | 12/24/2006, 1:11 pm EST

Dear Rolling Stone,
Did it occur to you to post the myspace links for all the bands listed here so people can check em out easily? Pretty logical methinks…

Jenna E. | 12/24/2006, 1:38 pm EST

Dear RS,
First of all, this list needs to be ten times longer. There are a gazillion great bands on MySpace.
Secondly, um yeah what were you thinking not putting the actual MySpace links up with the songs?
Lastly, if you liked Band Marino you should check out some other north-central Florida bands. Along with Band Marino, The Heathens (myspace.com/weareheathens) and Morningbell (myspace.com/morningbell) are my favorites.

SAC | 12/24/2006, 1:52 pm EST

This list is worthless….where is the diversity in music. There isn’t any, no folk, no shredding guitars, no experimental bands, no soul. I could put at least half the bands in the same category/genre….the music choice needs to be DIVERSE. To much whining and not enough feeling. Has rolling stone forgotten what music style they came from, and what music got them where they are today…..I think so.

DOTMIG | 12/24/2006, 2:07 pm EST

I am with you SAC. You know where you can get diversity, screaming guitars, Felix Cabrera on harmonica, Mateus formerly from Millionaires boys club on drums, Guido Diaz rippin the shit out of the guitar & DOTMIG putting his heart & soul into every track, which he wrote & produced with SexynLean & background vocals from SexynLean & Erica Diaz. With seven different genres, from folk, pop rock, dance, techno, urban even some hard rock. Please check my tracks out http://www.dotmig.com
http://www.myspace.co m/dotmig
I was told to stick to one genre & I told them to stick it up there ass.

DOTMIG is a Mig Fighter

Mikey A | 12/24/2006, 2:31 pm EST

Jesus christ you people are annoying. Here, I just stopped by with a nice big brick of cheese to go with your whine. Enjoy. I am disappointed that Matt Williams did not make the cut, but I have listened to a few of the winners so far and they seem to be pretty good, so rock on everyone and all you bands that are bitching should just be happy to have another outlet for exposure.

Peppur | 12/24/2006, 2:35 pm EST

Yeah for Airborne Toxic Event!

No, seriously though... | 12/24/2006, 3:25 pm EST

Does anyone who has listened to the Ryan Marks submission actually like it, a lot? Would you listen to it again? Would you listen to the whole song even once? Just curious since it got in the top 25 and Ryan was described as “child prodigy” material by RS in the intro blurb. Someone must like it, right? Anyone…please stand up and be counted. Sorry, Ryan….don’t take this personally.

Wicked | 12/24/2006, 3:33 pm EST

Hey Mickey Mouse,

DUH!!!! DUH!!!! WHAT DO U THINK WE R DOING WE ARE SUCKING UP EXPOSURE FROM THE MAGAZINE THAT HAS THE MOST CLOUT AS A LABEL. We are not whining were designing & we will be cracking the Chrys while the bitches are sittin on our shit.
Ok Mickey Mouse…nobody is hurting nobody here, if they are they’re unprofessional. U just came in through the back door, your not heading to the front of the check out line until u earn it. While a decent idea, the concept of limiting this list to 25 is ridiculous. You should simply have compiled the 1,700 submitted, and laid them all out in a two page spread in the magazine. If your point is about undiscovered talent, and music is subjective, don’t give us your opinion. Do a spread about how MANY bands are on myspace, and what a forum it is. Just an opinion. Oh, and um … hire some decent writers again, for God’s sake, and start talk about bands that nobody knows about. After all, why should someone buy a music magazine? To DISCOVER music, not read about gossip and bands that everybody is sick of already. Look to the future, and stop trying to sell us all out. With Love, Merry Christmas.

Band Marino Rules the world with an Iron Banjo. No but really. If you don’t dance, you will after going to a live show! Good choices. You guys are by far, the best to nominate a band that is well worth listening to. Keep up the good work.

rachel weisman | 12/24/2006, 10:31 pm EST

all i can say is that Ultra Sonic Edukators are seriously the best band on the list. and i agree that this list thing is kinda gay. Pitchfork would be a better list.

Mbear | 12/24/2006, 10:59 pm EST

I feel kinda sorry for all the haters, typing furiously on their keyboards, feeling dissed cuz their bands didn’t win. Brush it off, guys.

Although I don’t always agree w/ Rolling Stone, I have much respect for the mag. Nice to see them checking out what’s happening on myspace.

Overall, I’m impressed by the list. Everyone’s got their own taste, but my favs are Los Super Elegantes and Bedtime for Toys.

umm.. Five Times August? | 12/24/2006, 11:41 pm EST

If this contest was relative at all they would have noticed that the most traffic this contest had was from Five Times August fans. FTA has been in the Top 20 Unsigned Artists on myspace for like a year and I can’t say that for any of the other bands. But then again, I guess having a fanbase, talent, and actual myspace success wouldn’t have much to do with a contest like this…. ??

Holly | 12/25/2006, 12:09 am EST

Yes, I love the Ryan Marks song. and if you look at the Round Three page you’ll see many others did as well. the negative comments you’re seeing here are simply embittered fans of loser bands that are taking it out on Marks because he’s a 16-year-old genius.

SensiGuy | 12/25/2006, 12:25 am EST

A Myspace band contest and no emo bands? Wow. It’s like a band contest in Seattle in the early 90s with no grunge bands.

BTW, the Miniature Tigers song is pretty fun.

Yeah that contest sucks ballsack nuts f that armin van buuren is the best is the world end of story

jmac | 12/25/2006, 1:36 am EST

without getting into who should and should not be on the list, i want to say that, i am not sure weather these bands were judged by just one song, or the overall (which would warrant the title best band as opposed to best song). with that said, i respect many of these choices in so far as the songs on display are catchy and well written overall, completely pop as to be expected, not straying from the formula that makes a trl hit….real musicians(at least this is how i feel) appreciate a bit more than the run of the mill same old sound. for my part if it sounds like the “hipsters” would embrace it with arms wide open and it would be played in an abercrombie store while im looking for a tshirt, then it is usually a boring piece of crap….at the same time, it does require a polished sound to meet that requirement which probably appeals to the RS writer who wants to feel safe in his/her shell. again i think a lot of these songs are actually better than a lot of crap i hear on myspace, BUT i dont know if these are the best 25 bands based on that

jmac | 12/25/2006, 1:46 am EST

ps

Laila | 12/25/2006, 10:28 am EST

Oh, cool. The list got White Shoes & The Couples Company. They’re an indie band from Indonesia who carries out amazingly clean, attractive retro sound, which gives the listeners a good reminiscent of Indonesia’s music back in the 60’s, perhaps.

Here in Indo, indie bands only get wee supports from the industry and the majority of people. Therefore, having WS&TCC in the list means quite a lot for the indie scene here. Reading the comments, a lot of ppl think the list is crappy. But hell with it. Having WS&TCC in the list would at least make some ppl curious and therefore try to listen to them. So anyway, as a WS&TCC fan, thanks, RS for giving them a shot.

HA HA | 12/25/2006, 2:06 pm EST

Yeah…Band Marino is defitnetly the best band on the list.

Astro Junkie | 12/25/2006, 5:05 pm EST

Lay off folks, of everybody. At risk of offending half of you, which I really don’t care anyway:

Play me your music, I’ll probably hate it, tell you how out of time and key it is, and that you need to go back and practice with a metronome.

Everyone has different tastes. Get over it.

I don’t like folk music, but I’m not gonna go on a RS page and comment that Bob Dylan sucks. Cause he doesn’t. Just not my bag.

Do I expect all of you to like our music???? NO. Do you expect me to like all of you? NO. Do I like all the bands here NO. Do I like some of them YES. Instead of pulling your C%cks out of your pants and having a pissing contest, why don’t you just shut the F#ck up, and quit arguing about who sucks and who “Rocks”. Say your peace and get on with your day people. I don’t care what you say about Astro Junkie. If I did, I wouldn’t post this. But leave Ryan Marks, couple, and everyone else ALONE. They worked hard, now let them have a moment.

BTW, RS could only picked bands that entered.

You can find us on myspace if you would like to converse. I’m done with this “meeting of the minds”

jBaum | 12/25/2006, 5:44 pm EST

Congratulations to all of the winners. I would also like to thank Rolling Stone Magazine for comprising this list. I will admit I may have been a little harsh on you guys in my previous comments and I want to apologize. I know your heart was in the right place when you made this list and i’m sure the people working for you have a credib;e music knowledge that far surpasses my own. However I still stand by my words that this is by no means the best list. Alot of great acts are featured and maybe a few of them belong to be up there I just felt it could of been much more solid.I also understand that you could only pick acts that entered. I am really looking forward to your reality show on MTV about the up and coming writers competing for a position on the magazine. A good friend of mine played a major role in creating that show and I think it’s going to be really good. So I know I was being an ass earlier but no hard feelings ok RS..lol

This list is horrible. This is from the same magazine that declared that the chick band “KLIK” from Tampa, FL was the best unsigned act of the year. Go over and listen to their shit and you’ll understand what I am talking about. This yuppie elitist (irony, since none of these musicians seem to know how to play anything exciting and new) magazine needs to be shut down for spreading this CRAP!! I’m so sick of this crappy music getting recognized…WHY???

these bands are over rated. i am sick of insider bands like the airborne toxic event getting play just because their lead singer is a music critic. god, can’t a real band get a chance nowadays?

For those who say these bands “play nowhere”:

An Pierlé & White Velvet are playing in the following months in
MÜNCHEN, NÜRNBERG,FRANKFURT, STUTTGART,KOLN,BERLIN,HAMBURG, BRUGES, PARIS… I wouldn’t exactly call this “nowhere” for a Belgian band.

Ryan Marks is just a big target because he was specifically mentioned, and everyone else seems pretty bitter about that. His song stands out from most of the other stuff on the list that is pretty bland and unremarkable. Listen to it, it’s catchy. Although it must be hard when your working your ass off without any real payoff and a kid in high school with slim reason to work at music beats you.

Shannon Hurley | 12/28/2006, 11:15 pm EST

As one of the top 25 artists on your list, I am starting to discover the other artists here. One that really stands out is Miniature Tigers. The new kid on the indie rock block..fantastic.

Ya know, everyone at this magazine really needs to just kill themselves. I have not read one good article from you in probably 5 years. You guys are on hour high horses and pull bands out of your ass that are garbage but you do it to feel like you’re an elitist in the music scene. Honestly, my 3 year old nephew has better taste in music then EVERYONE at rolling stone put together.

The Best Albums of 2006 That You May Have Overlooked
We here at Earvolution have decided that the Best Albums of 2006 idea has probably run its course. Let’s be honest, you don’t need us to tell you that Bob Dylan, The Raconteurs and Pearl Jam put out great albums; that The Hold Steady, Cold War Kids and Wolfmother had breakout years and Gnarls Barkley put out the Song of 2006.

What we can do for you is list, in no particular order, a handful of albums that though worthy, many not have received the attention they deserved.

U-Melt: The I’s Mind

U-Melt spent 2006 establishing themselves as one of the hardest-working bands on the jamband touring scene. Shortening the solos, U-Melt successfully brought the fun and intensity of their live shows into the studio. Zac Lasher talked to Earvolution about the new album and more here.

Tea Leaf Green: Rock ‘N’ Roll Band

A companion to the identically titled DVD, Tea Leaf Green’s live album gave long time fans a high-quality audio version of the San Francisco rockers’ best songs and offered new listeners a perfect introduction to their sound. More on the DVD/CD releases here and our exclusive “embedded” weekend interview with TLG from the Dave Matthews Randalls Island Getaway is here.

Block: The Last Single Guy

The star-crossed love child of Beck and Lou Reed, the New York singer-songwriter poetically captures the fading beauty of the Big Apple, ruing the day that Avenue A turned into a “punk theme park.” Read our full album review here.

Willy Porter: Available Light

Born of loss, Porter celebrates life on Available Light. Containing a nice dose of Porter’s inimitable guitar, it’s his songwriting, especially on the post September 11 elegy “One More September,” that stands out. Check out our full album review here.

Carolina Chocolate Drops: Dona Got A Ramblin’ Mind

The sounds of the Carolina foothills as channeled through a trio of twenty-somethings that know the era only through history books . . . and their mentor, legendary fiddler Joe Thompson.

More on the album here.

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals: Nothing But The Water

How can you not love a girl who demands her J.J. Cale records back from her ex? And, who looks better in an Earvolution t-shirt? Technically a 2005 release, this album got the remastering and rereleasing treatment for 2006. Anchored by a transcendent title track, Potter & The Nocturnals get bluesy, funky and little gospel on their debut disc. More on the band here.

Foundry Fields Recordings: prompts/miscues

Bleak musings on a post-apocalyptic future never sounded so enjoyable. Front man Billy Schuh’s airy voice gives even the direst of visions an optimistic slant.

More on the album here.

Radio Birdman: Zeno Beach

Australia’s version of The Ramones wakes from a lengthy slumber and comes up with one of the freshest albums of the year. The veteran rockers crisp, in-your-face songs prove that hard driving rock isn’t solely the province of the young.

More on the album here.

Vernon Reid & Masque: Other True Self

Exploring jazz, funk and avant-garde, Reid brings the rock instrumental album out of the doldrums. With Leon Gruenbaum alongside, Masque interprets Depeche Mode and Radiohead and give life to Reid’s excellent originals. Vernon Reid spoke to Earvolution about the album and much more here.

Top Albums of 2006: 10-1
Published by vassego December 26th, 2006 in Lists.

Cover of Dosh’s The Lost Take

10. Dosh – The Lost Take

One of my favorite Minneapolis musicians showcases his strength’s on this, his third full-length. The laundry list of guests including Andrew Bird, Erik Appelwick, Jeremy Ylvisaker and others further increase the intricate textures of Dosh’s genre-blending style. I often find myself getting lost in the warm textures of his melodies and frequently forget that I’m not listening to a pop record.

Cover of Mogwai’s Mr. Beast

09. Mogwai – Mr. Beast

Mogwai’s 5th studio record brings a significant stylistic change to the band. Mogwai has built their career on being an intelligent metal band that doesn’t need to be obnoxious to prove they mean serious business. The band’s trademark has been songs that eb-and-flo for nearly 10 minutes or more. This record however shows a band with more focus, keeping their longest song, closer “We’re No Here” to a measly 5:39. Even though this record has removed a lot of the building crescendos of their previous efforts, the songs seem to maintain their power. When I first heard this record, I couldn’t believe it was the same old Mogwai that I’ve loved for the last five years; however, upon repeated listening, I find myself returning to Mr. Beast frequently. I hope that future Mogwai efforts will return some of their ostensibly less-structured songs, while maintaining the power showcased here.

Cover of Cat Power’s The Greatest

08. Cat Power – The Greatest

Cat Power’s haunting voice would probably make me love her, nearly regardless of the songs she writes. Fortunately, I don’t have to put my money where my mouth (fingers) is (are) yet as Chan’s created some lovely tales on this record. While the songs are less intimate, they still remain personal, and even more approachable. The arrangements with the Memphis Rhythm Band have been done incredibly well. Although the instrumentation on The Greatest occasionally borders on overshadowing Chan’s voice, it gets just close enough to the border to not cross that thin line. The smoke of the arrangements may glide over the line at times, but the winds from Chan’s soulful singing often guide them back to where they belong. Her songwriting is certainly changing, and while some claim it’s maturity, it’s difficult to say whether it’s because of the aim of creating an homage to her childhood music of Tennessee, or whether she really will be changing. I side more with the former than the latter. Nonetheless, the tales Chan weaves are gorgeous and intelligent. The few playful tunes are a welcome change, showing a healthier soul.

Cover of The Hold Steady’s Boys and Girls in America

07. The Hold Steady – Boys & Girls In America

There’s not much I can say about The Hold Steady. I like all of their records a lot, but the ballads on Boys & Girls make this my favorite bar-rock record of the year. With all the lyrical references to the Twin Cities, a place I still love, it would be hard for me to not like these guys. Sure, the music may not be mind-numbingly unique, it may not take the listener to another world, far away from that in which we live, but that’s what I love about it. It brings me back to a familiar place that I love.

Cover of Ellen Allien and Apparat’s Orchestra of Bubbles

06. Ellen Allien & Apparat – Orchestra of Bubbles

The mixing of the two diverse styles of Ellen Allien & Apparat here on Orchestra proves a benefit for the listeners and fans of either style of electronic music. I have to admit that I’m not wholly familiar with either musicians solo work. However, when I first heard this record, it’s easy to see that there are some very different backgrounds at work. Allien’s pounding, rough style truly benefits from Apparat’s attention to the minute beats. While Allien drives the beats home, Apparat comes from behind to fill the void with complex layers and still, somehow leaving space enough to not overflow the cup of collaborative genius. The champagne that produced these bubbles most certainly must have been a vintage Duval Leroy Cuvee Femme 1990 or another equally well-aged champagne.

Cover of My Morning Jacket’s Okonokos

05. Morning Jacket – Okonokos

I recognize I’m probably bending the rules a bit with including a live disc in my top records of 2006, but Okonokos is too accurate a depiction of My Morning Jacket to exclude from this list. As I mentioned in my earlier brief of MMJ live, with their organic sound, these guys really need the freedom of a live setting to showcase their talent, and this two-disc (or four LP) set does this incredibly well.

Cover of Wilderness’ Vessel States

05. Wilderness – Vessel States

Baltimore’s Wilderness have shown themselves to create records that are appropriate representations of their name. The expansiveness of Vessel States drifts in space pulling one away from their surroundings. Their sound is consistent, some would say boring, but I love the way they use sparse note placement to their advantage. The lyrics are as distant as the instrumentation is spacious, maintaining this well-balanced formula.

Cover of Jeff Tweedy’s DVD, Sunken Treasure04. Jeff Tweedy – Sunken Treasure

While I recognize including Sunken Treasure is another stretching the rules of “Top Album,” it’s inclusion was necessary given how often I listen to it. The songs featured on this recording showcase Jeff in his most intimate and innocent. Thankfully, he has included a incredible broad swipe of his previous songwriting experience, including music from Loose Fur, Uncle Tupelo and Wilco. Many of the older songs have been rearranged as well, bringing new life to them. I specifically enjoy the technical melodies of “Satan Your Kingdom Must Come Come Down,” which showcases Jeff’s talent on the guitar. It’s a pleasure to hear such stripped-down versions of many of my favorite songs.

Cover of the Appleseed Cast’s, Peregrine03. The Appleseed Cast – Peregrine

I was really anxious for this record. Two Conversations was an enormous disappointment for me, as it seemed to be showing a band in limbo. It seemed the band didn’t know if they should move back toward Mare Vitalis-style melodies and away from the abstract style of Low Level Owl towards a more accessible, poppier sound or maintain their more heavily electronic-influenced emo. Thankfully, Peregrine showed that prog rock was the avenue they should take, and I couldn’t agree more. It brought the heavy, dark & brooding sound to The Cast’s repertoire, and it arrived with honesty. It’s not forced as one might assume given their past discography. I look forward to The Appleseed Cast expanding their horizons with the broad base they’ve built.

Cover of M. Ward’s record, Post War02. M. Ward – Post-War

When I saw M. Ward live earlier this year at the Birchmere, I was quite sure that I had lost my eyeballs. When he emerged playing “Duet for Guitars #3″ from The Transfiguration of Vincent,” I was sure my eyes had popped so far from my head that I wouldn’t be able to retrieve them. His git-fiddle playing is masterful and his songwriting is terribly beautiful. It’s nice to hear someone of Matt’s eclectic talent, write such folk-inspired songs. His tales are smart, honest, and catchy; a perfect mix. M. Ward comes off nearly apathetic at times; however, it’s the laid-back style that draws you into his tales seeming to originate from a by-gone era.

Cover of Midlake’s record, The Trials of Van Occupanther01. Midlake – The Trials of Van Occupanther

This record’s velvety melodies struck with such a forceful impact the first time I heard it, I knew it was going to be near the top of my list this year. It’s stuck with me and catapulted to the top of my top albums at last.fm. The warm, soothing melodies on Van Occupanther combined with Tim Smith’s subtle vibrato make Van Occupanther’s troubles hardly seem problematic. With lyrics this warm and melodies this soft & lush, I find myself returning to this record, time and time again.

CONSIDER YOURSELF... | 1/31/2007, 2:10 pm EST

…the butt of a joke if your on this list. I think Rolling Stone made this list tongue and cheek. Just listen to any of the bands on here, it’s like making fun of the freaks that show up on American Idol.

Emily RE: Airborne Toxic Event | 1/31/2007, 6:26 pm EST

As a long time friend of mine, Mikel has been writing and playing music since he was 18 years old. He stopped writing music reviews two years ago, and started this new band with a refreshed outlook on life after facing several battles in his own personal life. So to the haters, and disillusioned, just thought I would set the record straight so there was no more confusion on your end.

Just play music…that’s what this is all about anyway, right?

ok so i dont know anything about any of these bands, except that band marino. being a local to the towns they play, I have been very blessed to have gotten to see them. GREAT BAND! BAND MARINO, if you dont like them, yeh well…you pretty much suck.

Anonymous | 2/5/2007, 7:05 am EST

All of the bands on here seem to have a very similar sound… and all very “indie.” Nothing against indie – I like some indie music – but “rock” as a genre includes much more than just this really unusual stuff. And unusual does not necessarily mean better. I listened to the first 7 or 8 of these and couldn’t find one I could listen to more than 30 seconds of. There was just nothing really exciting about them – nothing that grabs you. These are certainly not the 25 best bands on MySpace by any stretch of the imagination. From all the options I’m sure you had to choose from, I am very disappointed in this list. I could name 25 unsigned MySpace bands that are more listenable, probably off the top of my head.

Anonymous | 2/5/2007, 7:28 am EST

” The groups selected in the Top 25 are not as important as Rolling Stone making the effort. ”

Actually, I have to disagree. It does matter. People who are unfamilliar with MySpace as it relates to finding new music (yes, those sorts of people do still exist), may look at this list to see what sorts of music people offer. If the list is not particularly good, which in my opinion it is, overall, not, then these people may not realize the potential MySpace has for turning them on to music they may like better.

Anonymous | 2/5/2007, 8:03 am EST

A few details to take note of

I just checked MySpaces for these bands. Of the list of 25 bands, only three had more than 10,000 “friends” on MySpace. Of these three, one had 10,000some, one had 11,000some, and only one had over 20,000. Of those under 10,000, most were also under 5,000 and probably half of the bands on the list had only a few hundred. Clearly popularity on the site in question has absolutely nothing to do with finding the best bands on the site. If these were truely the best bands, wouldn’t people actually be LISTENING to them?

There is nothing that really makes these bands stand out. Where are the catchy hooks? Oh, I’m sorry, I guess writing songs that get stuck in people’s minds is now uncool or something?

There are so many sub-genres of “rock” that are not represented in this list at all. Where is the hard rock, the alternative, the pop-punk, the dancey-pop-rock, the metal… with few exceptions, everything seems to be either “indie” or “easy listening” sounding.

The recording quality / production of most of these tracks is… uh… well, not great to say the least.

I’m pretty sure anyone who uses the site regularly to look for new music could give a better list (or at least 10-15 better bands) right now.

Sure, I found this site because I knew of a band that had been nominated and I was curious to see if they won. However, I really don’t care that they didn’t win. It would have been nice, but I would have been just as happy to find a list of 25 great new bands I had not heard of to check out. What I found was this disappointing list. Not that they are particularly bad… they are all fine. Not horrible to listen to… but not particularly attention grabbing either. The best on MySpace? Certainly not.

Truly, this list comes off as pretentious garbage to me. Not only have I never heard of a single band on here, but I doubt that any one of them are destined for big things. They all sound the same and are lacking in anything, make that everything, that would make them worthwhile listening material. Next time you decide to post a list like this think for awhile about what makes these bands ‘the best’ as opposed to trying to be oh so original and snobbish.

I saw David j. on musicnation.com and he is currently in 1st place in the rock category. He seems to be a favorite amongst the artist and the fans.

“High Voltage an AC/DC Tribute – Let There Be Rock

http://www.myspace .com/highvoltagenc

I am not in the band just a fan

The Review

Surprised, amazed and rocked is how I walked away after seeing High Voltage’s performance at Scooters in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, July 21, 2007.

This band is comprised of five veteran performers and players who really nail their parts. I saw AC/DC back in the early 80’s and was impressed by their showmanship, especially given the energy Angus Young displayed. I’d be lying if I went beyond that and said I was a big fan of the band. I am familiar with and like some of their music, but, there’s defenately no “fan” status to be given here. That being said, if nothing else, these boys gave me a greater appreciation for the music and the performers they emulate.

High Voltage is fronted by:
Rick Daniels, vocals; Jeff Young, lead guitar; Alan Towers, rhythm guitar; Pepper Sheppard, bass and Mark Ritchie, drums.

Together they bring forth much of the music which put the Australian band on the map with frontman Bon Scott. The most impressive features are the vocals that Daniels gives up in his performance and the energy and playing capabilites of Young on guitar. Young’s authentic school boy outfit also helps make the grade. Teamed together, with a great backing effort, they make the show a must see, much like Bon Scott and Angus Young did with the upstart of AC/DC.

High Voltage came to fruition nearly a year ago when the two frontmen got together on Daniels’ idea. Before long, they found the rest of their formation and set to work at rehearsal. Four months ago, they broke out from the basement and brought it to the people of Raleigh. The response, thus far, has been grand. Last night they rocked the crowd and brought down the house with their combined energies and raw talents. Once they raised the sound level of Young’s guitar, after the first song, it was smooth sailing.

They opened the early evening outdoor gig with “Live Wire” and closed out the show with “Let There Be Rock.” The highlights which accompanied the setting sun and the rising moon were their explosive offering of “TNT,” the strip tease of Young which was done to the tune of “Bad Boy Boogie,” and the crowd’s response during “Dirty Deeds.”

When they are not working hard on their dynamic performance, they are working things out in the studio. A demo is forth coming as are many other great surprises. Looking ahead to the future, the band is working out some of the more modern riffs of AC/DC, the works that came with Brian Johnson’s fronting. Currently the only offering from that present formation is “Thunderstruck,” which truly pleased the crowd last night. As time evolves, High Voltage fans will also be able to enjoy other tunes from the Johnson era, including “Flick of the Switch,” “Stiff Upper Lip” and “Hell’s Bells,” to name a few.

If you are looking to be rocked, this band is a must see. With more than 30 songs added to their set list, they offer one hell of a show for all rock music fans to appreciate. To find out more you can check out their myspace page:

I can’t believe whats become of the musicianship of new bands. As I listened, song after dreary lame song it got me wondering. Who in the hell picked these bands? Rolling Stone has been meaningless for years. This is a prime example of why.

Wow everyone is talking about how that group, the Rockets leaked information about the show and them being finalist and where they were going to stay during the taping. I guess they wanted people to recognize them before so they could win but that’s cheating, now its no suprise at all. Why would these bimbos leak information like that? I could not believe it until I read it on the first page of Rolling Stone under Americas Next Great Band. Aren’t there rules to the competition? Im pretty sure they knew that before telling, that was stupid. Anyway I love AMERICAN IDOL and one group is not going to spoil it 4 me, hopefully…

Boom Chica Wow wow | 10/9/2007, 3:00 pm EST

Yeah, I think the group is the Rockets or something, I heard about that, It was one person from that group that leaked information Roxie “Vanessa Guzman” about her goup being a Finalist and where the Bands were going to stay, before the show airs (dummy), they probaly wont be able to be on the show because Fox and American Idol is strict about contestants abiding there rules, thats a digrace, its always a bad apple in the bunch
