Socrates of Shred Revealed on “Colbert”

12/21/06, 12:20 pm EST

Last night, viewers watched rock history being made as Stephen Colbert went head to head in a “shred-down” with Decemberists lead guitarist Chris Funk. “Guitarmageddon” settled once and for all the age-old question of whether or not Colbert rules at everything, including axe-wailing. Morley Safer, Henry Kissinger and Apples in Stereo singer Robert Schneider looked on as the competish got underway. After some impressive riffage from Funk, Colbert — rocking a five-neck guitar and Village People-style vest — stormed onstage and promptly injured his hand, thus rendering himself unable to compete. Luckily, Peter Frampton was on hand to step in. The all-star panel of judges, which included Rolling Stone scribe Anthony DeCurtis (holler!) and New York governor elect Eliot Spitzer, weighed in. But in the spirit of democracy, it was the American public that declared the winner.

Have beef with the winner? Let us know.

This was freakin’ hilarious! I’m so torn over the Colbert Report. I’m glad Steven is finally getting the kind of recognition he deserves, but the show can sometimes be inconsistent/uneven from one episode to the next. If only “The Daily Show” was 45 minutes per episode. Then they could rejoin forces, with enough airtime for everyone!

The only thing funny Colbert ever did was lampoon Prez Shrub The Second at a televised live White House Press event. He wasn’t funny before and hasn’t been funny since!

I thought Colbert himself was insulting, but everything surrounding the challenge was fantastic. He needs to spend more time representing the “truthiness” of the American Right-wing, which itself is so ridiculous that Colbert’s satire is eerily accurate. His representation (and its believability) of the far-right’s agenda merits him a place on either Fox–just as a friend! Nevertheless, the performance highlights how utterly ignorant, racist, homophobic, brash and crass many Americans really are.
