Shins + Gyllenhaal = Crushed Out Nation, Fred Durst Won’t Go Away, US To Take The Russians Down

12/21/06, 9:12 am EST

shins

  • Are the Shins secretly famous? We know lots of people love them, but LOTS of people must REALLY love them as they’ve apparently secured a spot playing SNL in January with Jake Gyllenhaal as the host. Will indie-rock loving, Donnie Darko obsessed teenage minds be able to sleep at night between now and January 13th? Not likely.
  • Somebody out there feels we haven’t already suffered enough with Fred Durst’s various intrusions into our otherwise peaceful and Durst-free lives. He’s reportedly been (type) cast as somebody’s henchman in a dark comedy called Play Dead co-starring Chris Klein.
  • Word is that a collection of major US record labels are joining the bandwagon of super-pissed off companies suing Mediaservices, aka the guys who run That Crazy Russian Downloading Site Where Everything Costs a Penny. Get your dollar records from Allofmp3.com and allTunes.com now, before it’s too late.
  • These really cool live Ryan Adams tracks are for those who A.) Don’t believe Ryan Adams is ever very good live. Or B.) Can’t remember a time when he wasn’t just a Star Wars obsessed platform wearing rapper.
  • Eddie Murphy is the father of Mel B’s baby. NO REALLY HE IS. The former Spice Girl has hired some hot shit rock-star-loving attorney (he’s reportedly represented Meatloaf, Cher, and Fleetwood Mac among others) to help her prove it.

Donnie Darko obsessed ‘teen minds’ aren’t the only ones who are going to have a hard time sleeping until Jan 13th. I haven’t seen my own ‘teen years’ in (a few) decades and have never obsessed over any celebrity in my life… But Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the hottest, talented, gorgeous (yet adorable) actors and celebrities in the world and I’m going to be glued (figuratively) to my TV set to watch SNL on Jan 13th. (That is if I can stay awake — after all these sleepless nights ‘tween now and then….)

Orion- I live for the un-enlightened drivel from the likes of you! You must be a Fred Durst fan too.

Another positive post by GrammarPolice - go back in the hole you came from loser!

Indie music now is just reheated mush left off of 80’s hit recordings.

Jab | 12/21/2006, 11:15 pm EST

what a boring saturday night live…….why the hell is indie rock so damn folky………wheres the loud distorted guitars of the pixies that used to be the staple of indie music?

readytorock | 12/21/2006, 10:43 pm EST

Shins+Jake= Overrated crapfest.

DrJ | 12/21/2006, 5:50 pm EST

JAKE Gyllenhal?! Man, you got me all excited with the headline, thinking his talented sister Maggie was gonna be hosting. Don’t do that.

Oddjob loves Fred Durst

Folks,
Isn’t the lambasting of Elizabeth Goodman getting a bit excessive? If her writing style is immature and indulgent, the haters should simply avoid it.
As far as Fricke being “brilliant,” that’s a little questionable. H.L Mencken and George Orwell are “brilliant,” not people who just creatively muse about rock music. Fricke’s good but he’s not ready for the pantheon.

major record labels are pissed off for good reason…i’m gonna miss tower records…

The Shins make very good pop records, but they are the most uninspiring live band I have ever seen…and I’ve seen Chuck Berry in his ’70’s and The Grateful Dead over 50 times!

Oddjob | 12/21/2006, 11:58 am EST

A wanker??? Who said that, is that you, Noel Gallagher?

tara | 12/21/2006, 11:58 am EST

I’m not going to begrudge The Shins fifteen minutes of fame. Lighten up people! They’re just making music for dinner parties.

I think SNL has a history of choosing a few odd choices for musical guests, anyway.

And with Jakey-boy as the host? I’ll definitely be checking him the show out.

I enjoy Shins music, but Shins fans got this crazy idea in their heads that their better than everyone else because they’ve heard of a band no one else has. Prime example is Zach Braff. Sorry guys, we saw Garden State too.

oddjob | 12/21/2006, 10:56 am EST

Oddjob is a wanker and wrong on both accounts.

How can Rolling Stone employ such brilliant writers as David Fricke as well as people who use the word “crush” in every single posting? It baffles me. I will forever read Rolling Stone magazine but this blog is rapidly turning into People.com.

Oddjob | 12/21/2006, 10:18 am EST

Like most posters on this blog, I am about to get very negative:

Lots of people love the Shins, but millions more don’t care whether they live or die. Their music serves no function in life other than subtley pleasant background noise.

And “Donnie Darko” is about the worst movie I have ever seen. Millions of people love that film too, but they are mistaken. Bad acting, a retarded story, and an incredible misrepresentation of Einstein’s theories combine to make one of the biggest wastes of time you will ever encounter. There is no way to like that film- even the slightest bit- if you have spent any time actually thinking about it.
